Rose isn't used to having nice things. She isn't used to having many things at all. (Living a life on the run doesn't allow for keeping much in the way of personal possessions.)
When Damon gives her a keychain with a cheap plastic rose-shaped charm dangling from it for no reason ("I saw this and thought of you"), she stares at it dumbly for a few long moments before saying, "I don't have any keys."
"Do you want a key to the house? I've got a spare I can give you," Damon offers immediately.
"I don't really need it. No one ever locks the door."
At that, he draws her into his arms and holds her tightly against him. She is baffled by his reaction. She's just stating facts. Why does he think she needs a hug?
"You live here. You should have a key," Damon says softly. "This is your home now."
