This is an alternate telling of the little mermaid 2 where i want to change a few things around e.g Melody's age and the pendant also giving her a tail when worn underwater. All characters belong to Disney.
Summary: Melody has kept the magic pendant with her name on it hidden ever since she found it. One day, after being embarrassed at her 16th birthday party, she runs away to the sea with the pendant and finds out it doesn't just show her Atlantica…it can also give her a mermaid's tail.
Melody never liked being so close yet so far away from the sea. She wanted to see it since she was four years old but her parents always warned her,
"It's dangerous in the sea, Melody. You are not allowed to go there."
"But I want to see it... Mom, dad, can't you come along with me?"
"This discussion is over, Melody. You are not going over the walls. You are to stay in the palace where it's always safe."
She couldn't say another word. Not that it would change anything.
And that's where it started.
If her parents wouldn't take her to the sea she would go there by herself. Whenever the time was right, she would go under the wall and spend some time swimming and collecting sea shells of different kinds. It grew to be her favorite pastime and thanks to her parents being too busy with their royal duties, they never found out.
One day she found a pendant with her name on it. Upon discovering it was magical and showed her Atlantica, it grew out to be her most prized possession and also her biggest kept secret. She wanted to ask her parents on multiple occasions why it had her name on it and where did the magic even come from but knew that it would reveal all her years of sneaking away to the sea to them. So, she kept it hidden in a place where no one would find it, although she promised herself that one day she would visit and explore Atlantica, no matter what.
As the years went by, Melody realised she had trouble fitting in. Most teenage girls her age were mostly interested in fashion, royal balls, princes and other different things. No one had quite shared the same interest and love she had for exploring the ocean. She found it difficult to make friends and also to express her thoughts and desires to her parents, who were already too busy and stressed with their royal duties and would never understand her anyways.
Revealing the necklace to her parents would mean that they would put her on constant watch which meant she couldn't sneak off to the sea ever again.
Her days passed dull and forlorn but she always tried to put on a smile and make herself believe she was happy and satisfied. After all, she lives the privileged life of a princess...who would complain about life if placed in her royal shoes?
The time for her sixteenth birthday party was drawing near. Her parents had planned a huge royal ball where royals and aristocrats from far and wide would be invited. Great. This was exactly what Melody's introverted self had wanted.
She absolutely dreaded having to attend the celebration. The thought that it was a party hosted at her name and that all eyes would be on her, possibly judging her, made it even worse.
Her hands were shaking as she placed the crown on her head and looked at herself in the mirror, ready to go down to the party.
"You look beautiful, Melody." Her mother assured her.
"Everything will go fine, dear." Her father assured her.
But it didn't.
Half an hour into the party she tripped while dancing and stepped into her own gown, ripping it accidentally. The crown from her head fell on the floor, messing up her hair. Even worse, her five foot tall birthday cake couldn't make it to the plates when the palace chef, Louis, spotted Sebastian nearby, automatically starting to chase him and knocked it off in the process.
It wasn't anything too bad, according to her parents. And it was certainly not their daughter's fault as well, they thought.
But the way all the guests had fallen into endless laughter made Melody not want to stay there for even a second.
She ran to her room in tears, locking the door.
Her parents waited outside for sometime for her to open the door so they could comfort their daughter but Melody just didn't want to see anyone for the rest of the night.
Or even for the rest of her life.
She knew she didn't belong here. She was the princess of disaster and she would not only continue to embarrass herself but also her parents.
Perhaps, it would be best if she would just run away. She didn't know where she'd go, if she'd even stay safe but she knew that it would be better than anything her disastrous life as a princess would have to offer.
Yes, running away...
To the sea...the one place where she believed she truly belonged. For good.
Sounded like a plan.
That night she packed a few things in a satchel, ready to depart. One of the things she had decided to take was her most prized possession, the magical necklace from Atlantica with her name on it. She put it on and made her final escape by going under the tall stone walls surrounding the palace.
To her luck, nobody was around her. Even Sebastian, who would guard her the whole time she'd go sneaking to the sea wasn't there. She was completely alone and free from anyone's watch.
She spotted a rowboat nearby and pushed it to the waters. She began to row.
This was it. She would not look back anymore. There was no coming back.
She had been rowing for quite some time now. The night had grown darker and colder. A wind started to blow, causing some stronger waves to sway her boat. She grabbed the oars tighter and began to row with some more force, to avoid being pushed by the wind.
The wind only started to get stronger. She lost one of the oars and it sunk. She was worried, there was no land nearby and she could not control the boat with all the strong tides tossing and turning it around on.
Before she could think of any possible ways to save herself from the winds, the boat capsized.
The water of the sea was cold as ice. Melody tried to stay afloat but the waves made it harder for her to keep her head over the water. After a few minutes of striuggling, she felt her limbs start to grow numb.
Melody felt herself began to drown...and that's when her necklace began to glow.
She looked at the necklace in shock as it opened on its own and began to envelope her in a golden bubble. Her legs began to move as a spiral of glowing current surrounded them and what happened next left her even more shocked than before.
A mermaid's tail.
Her legs were no longer there. They had been replaced with a mermaid's tail.
She couldn't believe her eyes.
She was a mermaid now.
A real mermaid.
The bubble around her broke and that's when she felt the sea water around her body for the first time as a mermaid. It no longer felt cold and she was no longer drowning, she could easily stay afloat. The underwater was no longer as dark and scary. She tried to move her tail and was shocked when she saw it respond to her brain.
She took it for a quick swim and noticed how fast it was.
She couldn't believe it. She was no longer a pathetic human girl but an actual mermaid.
She cried tears of joy as she kissed her necklace. It saved her life.
She would no longer have to go back.
As she relished the experience of her being truly happy in such a long time, someone interrupted, "What are you doing here?"
She froze and turned around to face the voice. It came from a young merman, who looked slightly older than her...perhaps seventeen. Even in the dark, her eyes could slightly make out a few of his features, he had sandy blonde hair that reached his neck and a green tail. Melody felt her breathing hitch when she saw his bare torso and muscular arms...it was a sight she had never seen before and she felt weak all over.
He swam closer to her, "You know we're not supposed to...oh," He paused to look at her, slightly stunned, "Have I seen you before?"
"Um, n-no! I...I mean, yes! I am a mermaid." She stuttered, chuckling nervously. "A real mermaid."
"Alright?" He raised an eyebrow, "Well, you shouldn't be here at this hour you know, it's not safe."
"Really?"
"Yes, this is considered a dangerous region as it's past Atlantica's borders. You should be at home." He then put a hand around his neck, feeling slightly embarrased. "I guess I could say the same for myself...we should both be at Atlantica right now."
Melody gasped, her blue eyes sparkling. "Y-You live in Atlantica?"
"Uh, yes?" He laughed. "All merpeople do."
"Merpeople...I knew it!" She whispered to herself, holding her necklace.
"I'm Alex." He extended his hand to her.
Melody blushed as she took it, she never felt this nervous around a boy before, "I'm...Mel...Mel..."
"Melmel?" He raised an eyebrow, smiling, "That's a pretty...unique name, I guess."
"Yeah!" She shrieked, almost too excitedly. "That's my name! I'm glad you like it!"
He laughed, this girl was definitely weird and he liked it. "So, Melmel, would you... like to swim back to Atlantica with me?"
Melody's eyes widened, "You would... take me there, really?"
"Um, yeah? That's where our home is, remember?"
"Right! Oh, right." She regained her senses, You're a mermaid now, Melody...act like one!
She took a deep breath, "Yes,of course, let's go, um, what was your name again, sorry?"
"Alex." He chuckled, holding out his hand.
"Alex," She placed her hand on his, her eyes dreamy as he led her deeper into the waters. She noticed how her new tail swam perfectly, just like his. She held the necklace securely, she knew that if it would get lost, she'd lose her tail as well...which is something she would never want now that she's going to the place she always dreamed about, Atlantica.
After a while, Alex spoke up, "Since we've never met before, I'd like us to be friends, Melmel."
The smile on Melody's face grew, "I'd love that, Alex."
