As you might see, I changed Ashley's hair a bit on the cover, so the short hair she has on it now is what she looked like at the very beginning of the story. It will get longer as the series progress.
I didn't add it in the last chapter's Author's Note section, but I have a poll up on my profile concerning the Pokémon fanfic series. It's whether I should add Pokémon movies in the fanfic or not. I'd appreciate your answer, so I know how to develop the series in the future.
The chapter begins in Ashley's point of view.

Chapter 27: The Psychic Showdown
I was unconscious for a whole day after we stormed Silph Co. and stopped Team Rocket from getting the Master Ball and its data. When I woke up, I found myself in a hospital bed with Ash and Pikachu sleeping on a chair next to me. I shook them awake and Ash threw his arms around me in a bear hug. I was still a little sore, so I told him to take it easy.
Misty, Brock, and my Pokémon hurried to the hospital when they heard I had woken up. They filled me in of what I had missed while being unconscious. The police and Pokémon League managed to arrest a large amount of Team Rocket grunts, but they failed to get Giovanni. He managed to escape shortly after I fainted next to Firered.
I got very upset when I heard from Ash how Champion Lance appeared in the president's office after the battle. I had always wanted to meet him and get either a handshake or an autograph from him. Ash grinned when I said that with tears in my eyes before he held up my book about dragon Pokémon, written by the Champion himself. He opened the first page and revealed an autograph that wasn't there before. Ash told me Lance signed it after he heard I was a big fan of his.
That book was now my biggest treasure in life.
I was discharged from the hospital one day after I woke up, but I was still ordered by the doctor to take it easy. That was no problem because I wanted to get some rest. Besides, the Saffron City Gym was still closed because Sabrina had to help out with the city, which was a Gym Leader's responsibility, while the citizens were returning to their normal lives.
One thing I felt extremely uncomfortable with was the mayor of Saffron City held a large ceremony to thank me, my brother, our friends, and everyone else who participated on the mission to drive Team Rocket out of the city. While standing on stage with so many eyes on me, I could only look down on my feet. Ash knew how much I didn't like seeing so many people staring at me, so he held my hand until we received each a diploma for our heroic action.
I was getting a little concerned whether I could participate in the Pokémon League in the near future, but perhaps the Pokémon battles could help me get distracted and relax.
Firered was acting a little out of it for a while. He often sat alone whenever we were outside of the Pokémon Center and did nothing. Brock assumed it had something to do with Firered's pride after the battle we had with Giovanni, of how easily he got defeated by Nidoqueen and her Surf attack.
Hearing that made me determined to ignore doctor's orders and train my Pokémon even more so we could defeat Giovanni next time we encountered him. Firered got into a better mood by that as I practiced with Ash, Misty, and Brock.
If I wanted to become the best dragon tamer, I had to train my Pokémon as much as I could to help them reach their true potential.

A whole week later, words spread that the Saffron Gym was finally open for Trainers to challenge Sabrina. When Ash heard that, he got excited to finally earn his sixth badge, so as soon as we finished breakfast the next day, we headed to the Gym.
"I can't wait for this Gym battle!" Ash said excitedly. "This is the first time I'll ever battle against psychic-type Pokémon."
"Pikachu!" Pikachu smiled from Ash's shoulder.
"Psychic-type Pokémon are known to be one of the strongest types, so this might really be a challenge for you two", Brock pointed out.
"I know", I nodded softly. "The Gym battle with you, Misty, was really tough with your Staryu and Starmie."
"And that's why they are both my main Pokémon", Misty giggled before she got a depressed expression. "But Psyduck is a whole another story… He keeps giving me headaches of how useless he is!"
"Don't talk like that about your own Pokémon!" I retorted irritably, surprising Misty. "No Pokémon in the world is useless! It's up to its Trainer of how they train it to become better and stronger. If you take a little more time with Psyduck and really get to know him, you will see new sides of him!"
"Yeah, Ashley's right!" Ash nodded. "If you spend more time with Psyduck and train him patiently, you might get a Golduck in the future."
"A Golduck?!" Misty suddenly exclaimed excitedly before she looked like she was in a daydream. "Ah, I'd do anything to get a Golduck!"
"What was that about…?" I mumbled confusedly.
"Why am I not surprised about your reaction, Ashley?" Brock chuckled softly. "Golduck is known to be a handsome water-type Pokémon, and girls who are into water-type Pokémon often wants to get one for their team. And even though it knows psychic-type moves, it's only classified as pure water-type."
"Oh…! That explains Misty's reaction", I laughed sheepishly.
"Maybe Sabrina can teach us a thing or two about psychic-type Pokémon", Ash suggested. "Now, let's go to the Gym!"
"Pi pikachu!"

We encountered the same Gym Trainer we met last time we were in Saffron City by the front desk of the Gym. He recognized us and said Sabrina was expecting us. He escorted us to a large indoors battlefield. The field was flat with no boulders or other obstacles. There were stands on both sides of the large room, so Misty and Brock walked to them to get a seat.
"Lady Sabrina, the Ketchum twins have arrived!" the Gym Trainer called.
A door opened at the other side of the field before a black silhouette walked out. As soon as it stepped into the spotlight, it turned out to be Sabrina.
"Welcome to my Gym, Ash, Ashley", she greeted. "I'm sorry about the delay, but the restoration of Saffron City had to come first."
"We understand, Sabrina", I nodded.
Sabrina smiled softly before she flipped her hair over her shoulder. "So… Which one of you will challenge me first?"
Ash and I turned to each other for a quick talk. "Last time, at the Fuchsia Gym, you went first, Ash, so it's my turn to go first", I pointed out.
"Sounds fair and square!" Ash nodded.
I nodded in return and turned to the Gym Leader. "I'll go first."
"Very well", Sabrina nodded.
Ash and Pikachu went to the stands to sit down next to Misty and Brock while I took my place on the field. The Gym Trainer went to the referee spot as Sabrina and I prepared ourselves for the Gym battle.
"The Gym battle between Gym Leader Sabrina and challenger Ashley is about to begin!" the Gym Trainer announced. "The Trainers will use four Pokémon each! The battle is over when one Trainers' Pokémon have fainted! Only the challenger can switch Pokémon! Begin!"
"Volt, I choose you!" I shouted, throwing his Poké Ball.
"Jolteoon!"
"Abracadabra, Kadabra!" Sabrina shouted, using her psychic powers to throw her Poké Ball.
"Kadabra!"
"Kadabra, use Psybeam!" Sabrina commanded.
"Volt, dodge and use Bite!" I shouted.
Kadabra used its spoon to fire a colorful psychic beam at Volt. Volt dodged it with only centimeters before he ran towards the psychic-type Pokémon. His teeth started glowing before he jumped onto Kadabra and bit him repeatedly. Kadabra fell backwards onto the ground and struggled to get Volt off of him.
"Kadabra, use Psychic to get Jolteon off of you!" Sabrina shouted.
Kadabra grabbed its spoon it had dropped and made it glow in a blue aura. Seconds later, Volt was enveloped in the same aura before he was levitated to the air.
"Volt, use Thunderbolt!" I shouted.
Volt's body started crackling in electricity before he unleashed a Thunderbolt. Because Kadabra was busy levitating him, it didn't get a chance to reflect the electric-type move. It got hit by the Thunderbolt, which caused him to lose concentration on its Psychic move. Volt stopped glowing and fell down on the ground, but he was prepared and landed gracefully on his four paws. Kadabra, however, didn't raise up from the floor.
"Kadabra is unable to battle! Jolteon wins!" the Gym Trainer announced.
"Great job, Volt!" I praised him.
"Jolt olt!" Volt barked happily.
"Return, Kadabra!" Sabrina said as she called back her Pokémon. "Rest well, Kadabra." With that said, she switched Poké Balls. "Mr. Mime, it's your turn!"
"Mime mime mime!"
Ugh… Mr. Mime was one of my least favorite Pokémon in the whole Kanto region. I didn't know why, but I always found it to be really weird.
"Volt, can you continue?" I asked.
"Jolt!" Volt nodded.
"Okay, let's go with Bite again!" I shouted.
Volt dashed towards Mr. Mime and bit the weirdo, forcing a cry of pain out of its mouth.
"Psybeam!" Sabrina shouted.
Just as Volt jumped back after his attack, Mr. Mime put its hands out front, aiming at Volt's stomach, before firing a Psybeam. Volt shrieked in pain as he got thrown back and crashed on the battlefield.
"Volt, are you okay?!" I called worriedly.
Volt jumped up on his paws and growled at Mr. Mime. "Jolt jolt!"
I sighed in relief before concentrating on the battle again. "Volt, use Bite again!"
"Barrier, Mr. Mime!" Sabrina commanded.
Oh no! If Mr. Mime managed to use Barrier and raise its defense, Bite could barely do any damage!
"Quick Attack, Volt! And fast!" I shouted desperately.
Volt picked up the pace with Quick Attack as Mr. Mime lifted its arms to use Barrier. My Pokémon jumped up in the air while still using the speed of Quick Attack and crashed onto Mr. Mime before biting hard on its stomach.
"MIME!" Mr. Mime cried in pain.
Volt jumped back with a bark when he was done. Mr. Mime slowly pushed itself up with its hands, but his eyes rolled back before he collapsed again.
"Mr. Mime is unable to battle! Jolteon wins!" the Gym Trainer announced.
"Awesome, Volt!" I praised my partner. "You're amazing!"
"Jolt jolt!" Volt barked happily.
"That's the spirit, Ashley!" Ash yelled from the stands. "You can do it!"
"Pi pikachu!"
Sabrina had called back Mr. Mime while I was waving to my brother and our friends. "Your Jolteon sure is powerful, but the battle is far from over", the Gym Leader said while she levitated her third Poké Ball. "Go, Venomoth!"
"Moooth!"
"A Venomoth, huh…", I mumbled before grabbing Volt's Poké Ball. "Volt, let's rest now."
"Jolteon!" Volt nodded.
I returned him into his Poké Ball before switching Pokémon. "Bring out your inner flame, Firered!"
"Rawr!"
"Now that's troubling…", Sabrina mumbled while keeping a calm expression.
"Firered, use Flamethrower!" I shouted.
The flame on his tail grew bigger as he collected his energy and fired a large Flamethrower. It was bigger than usual, which was the result of all the training we had done for the last week. The Flamethrower swallowed Venomoth who didn't have a chance to dodge it. Venomoth shrieked in pain until Firered finished his attack. Sabrina's Pokémon coughed out a small ball of smoke from its mouth before it collapsed on the field with several burns on its body.
"Venomoth is unable to battle! Charizard wins!" the Gym Trainer announced.
"Awesome, Firered!" I smiled widely. "You took out Venomoth with just one Flamethrower!
"RAWR!" Firered roared as he breathed fire in victory.
"Return, Venomoth", Sabrina called back her Pokémon before switching to her last Poké Ball. "I'm counting on you, partner. Abracadabra, Alakazam!"
"Alakazam!"
"Alakazam…", I mumbled softly before grabbing Firered's Poké Ball. "Return, Firered."
Firered didn't resist as he was returned to his Poké Ball. I decided to keep him as my last resort Pokémon in case the others were defeated by Alakazam. It was known to be a very strong Pokémon.
"Wanda, I choose you!" I called, throwing her Poké Ball.
"Gyhaaa!"
"Alakazam, use Psychic!" Sabrina shouted.
Alakazam used both his eyes and spoons to activate Psychic. He lifted up Wanda in the air and squeezed her with his telekinesis powers. Wanda roared in pain before she was thrown down on the field, pushing up dust in the air.
"Wanda, are you okay?!" I yelled through the dust.
The dust cleared up to reveal Wanda was still standing up. "Ghyaa!"
"Okay, let's use Hydro Pump!" I shouted.
"Calm Mind!"
Wanda fired a Hydro Pump and it hit Alakazam, but he was still standing straight as he was enveloped in a pink and purple aura. If I remembered correctly, Calm Mind could raise both the Pokémon's special attack and special defense. That was going to be troublesome.
"Wanda, use Dragon Rage now!" I shouted.
Wanda breathed navy blue and yellow flames at Alakazam as soon as Calm Mind was over. Dragon Rage could inflict a certain amount of damage without being affected by status changes, so I had to rely on it.
"Psychic!" Sabrina shouted.
Alakazam's spoons glowed with his eyes, levitating Wanda up from the field and squeezed her again. Wanda shrieked in pain, which was a clear sign she was getting weak. Sabrina's Pokémon threw her down on the field again.
"Wanda, are you okay?!" I called worriedly.
"Gh-Ghyaa…", Wanda rumbled as she slowly raised up.
She was getting closer to her limits. I had to do one last thing with her before she could faint.
"Let's try Dragon Rage one more time!" I shouted. "Do as much damage as you can!"
Wanda breathed the dragon fire again at Alakazam. This time, the psychic-type Pokémon grunted in pain as his body started getting burns.
"C'mon, Wanda! You can do it!" Ash cheered.
"Pika pika!"
"Your Gyarados fought its best, but it's over", Sabrina said determinedly. "Alakazam, finish Gyarados with Psychic!"
"Alakazaaam!"
Wanda didn't get levitated this time, but her body glowed in blue colors due to the Psychic move. She shrieked in pain as she was squeezed. When the attack was over, she collapsed on the field. I couldn't help but worry about her.
The Gym Trainer did a double check on her before announcing the result. "Gyarados is unable to battle! Alakazam wins!"
For a second, I felt a little numb. It had been a long time since one of my Pokémon fainted during a Gym battle. Last time it happened was when I challenged the Cerulean Gym and battled Misty. I got so used to not losing any Pokémon during a Gym battle, but that was before.
Battling Sabrina as the sixth Gym Leader made me realize I had come so far on my journey and I was going to meet more and more powerful Trainers very soon.
"Return, Wanda!" I called back my Pokémon before looking at the Poké Ball with a small smile. "You did great, Wanda. You deserve a long rest."
"So, which Pokémon shall be Alakazam's next toy?" Sabrina questioned.
I put away Wanda's Poké Ball and switched to Volt. "Volt, it's your turn!"
"Jolteoon!"
"Volt, use Bite!" I shouted.
Volt ran forward and jumped up before diving down on Alakazam, biting hard on top of his head. "KAZAAM!" Alakazam cried in pain.
Volt jumped back when he was done and growled aggressively. Alakazam was down on one knee, which meant he was getting weaker.
"Alakazam, use Recover!" Sabrina shouted.
No, not Recover!
Alakazam closed his eyes before he was enveloped in a bright aura. His bruises and burns slowly vanished as he restored his health. I growled irritably, feeling I was back to square one.
"Volt, use Thunderbolt!"
"JooolteOOOON!" Volt roared as he unleashed a Thunderbolt.
Alakazam got hit by the move and cried in pain while he was getting electrocuted. I knew he had used Calm Mind before, but Volt did a large amount of damage.
"Alakazam, use Psychic!" Sabrina shouted.
Alakazam recovered from the Thunderbolt before using his powers to levitate Volt from the ground. He squeezed my partner with telekinesis, forcing a shriek out from Volt.
"JOOOOL!"
"Volt!" I called worriedly.
Alakazam swung his arm and threw Volt down to the ground. I flinched by the noise of the impact, fearing Volt might have broken a bone. Wanda's body was larger and thicker than his, so there was a chance for a bone fracture.
"Volt!" I called in fear when I saw his bruised body.
"J-Joolt…", he whimpered.
"Volt, are you okay?" I asked worriedly, feeling tears tickling my eyes. "I'll call you back-"
"JOLT!"
I flinched when I heard Volt bark. He slowly pushed himself up on all four paws. He was really struggling to stay on his paws by the way his body was shaking and how he panted deeply.
"Volt…", I mumbled softly.
"Your Jolteon is very persistent", Sabrina commented. "Just like your other Pokémon, he really wants to do his best for you."
I bit my lower lip to stop the sobs in my throat. I was so touched by my Pokémon's determination to do their best for me. I shook my head and quickly wiped the tears off my eyes before getting serious.
"Volt, just like you, I won't give up!" I called determinedly. "Let's end this battle!"
"Jolt!" Volt nodded.
"Thunderbolt, full power!" I screamed.
"JolteOOOOOON!"
Volt unleashed a bigger Thunderbolt than before that crackled so loud I had to cover my ears. The move was so strong it made a crack on the field as it approached Alakazam.
"Alakazam, Recover!" Sabrina shouted.
However, before Alakazam could restore his health, he got hit by the Thunderbolt. "ALAKAZAAAM!"
Volt kept using Thunderbolt until an explosion erupted from Alakazam. He panted deeply as he canceled his electricity and fell down on all four. He was still awake, but something told me he could faint any second now.
The smoke of the explosion cleared up to reveal Alakazam lying on the ground. "K-Kazam…", he mumbled weakly.
"Alakazam is unable to battle! Jolteon wins! The winner of the Gym battle is challenger Ashley!" the Gym Trainer announced.
"Alright! You did it, Ashley!" Ash yelled happily from the stands.
"Pikachu!" Pikachu cheered.
"That's the spirit, girl!" Misty called.
"One step closer to the Pokémon League!" Brock added.
I ran to Volt and got down on one knee next to him. "You did amazingly, Volt. Thank you."
"Jolt…", Volt barked tiredly.
I straightened up when I saw Sabrina walked over to me after she had called back her Alakazam. "This was an entertaining battle. You've trained your Pokémon well, Ashley."
"T-Thank you…", I blushed modestly and looked away while tucking my hair behind my ear.
Sabrina chuckled softly before she held out her hand with a badge. "I hereby bestow you the Marsh Badge, the proof that you've defeated the Saffron City Gym."
The Marsh Badge looked like a golden coin with another little coin in the middle.
"Thank you, Sabrina", I nodded before taking the badge. "Six badges down, two more to go."
"Jolteon…!" Volt barked happily.
Sabrina smiled before turning to Ash. "Ash, I'll have to go to the Pokémon Center first to heal my Pokémon, and then we can battle!"
"Sure, Sabrina!" Ash nodded. "And I'm gonna win my own Marsh Badge, just you wait!"

Ash's Gym battle with Sabrina was so thrilling. Pikachu defeated Kadabra in a flash while Charmeleon burned Mr. Mime into a crisp…not literally. Pidgeotto had an aerial battle with Venomoth, which he managed to win. Ash used Gengar as his fourth Pokémon against Alakazam. That battle felt like it took forever until Gengar got defeated. However, Pikachu avenged him by taking down Sabrina's ace Pokémon.
Now both Ash and I had six badges!

The day before we decided to leave Saffron City to head to Cinnabar Island to challenge the seventh Gym, Ash and I dropped by the Fighting Dojo to say hi to Master Koichi and his pupils. We even brought Bruce and Primeape along so they could hang out with the other fighting-type Pokémon.
"Ah, my two favorite pupils! Welcome back!" Koichi called when we entered the dojo.
"Hello, Master Koichi!" Ash bowed.
"It's been a while", I nodded before bowing.
"I saw you two and your friends at the ceremony the mayor held for you. To think not long ago, you two were little brats, but you've grown a lot since you visited my dojo", Koichi laughed heartedly.
"Chahahahan!" Hitmonchan laughed.
"Lelelele!" Hitmonlee laughed along.
"We weren't really any brats…", Ash sweat dropped with a sheepish laugh.
"But we're still children…", I mumbled softly.
We greeted the other pupils and called out Bruce and Primeape so they could play around and practice with the other Pokémon. Koichi served us green tea with rice crackers while we talked away. Well, Ash kept the conversation going. I just stayed quiet and enjoyed the treats, but inserted my own thoughts every now and then. I preferred watching the Pokémon while they punched sand bags and practiced martial art.
I snapped out of my trance when Koichi spoke about our Pokémon. "Your Primeapes are in great shape, but I can sense they are still hiding their true potential."
"Yeah, we're trying to train them the best we can, but it's really tough with fighting-type Pokémon", Ash confessed before rubbing the back of his head.
Koichi was quiet for a moment before he snapped his fingers. "I know! Would you mind if I took care of your Primeapes?"
"What?" I said confusedly.
"I have a proposal", Koichi corrected. "Since you two are going to participate in the Pokémon League, would you like to keep your Primeapes here until then? In return, I'll give you a Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee."
"You mean… We're trading Pokémon?" I felt very confused right now.
"Not exactly", Koichi shook his head. "I'll gladly give you Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee so you can still have a fighting-type Pokémon in your team while I polish your Primeapes' skills. What do you say?"
Ash and I looked at each other hesitantly. "What do you think, sis?"
"I think…we should talk to Bruce and Primeape first", I replied.
Bruce and Primeape hurried to us when they heard me mention their names. "Prime prime?" Bruce said.
"Primeape, Bruce…", Ash began. "Ashley and I are wondering if you two want to stay here in the dojo to train."
"Primeape?" Primeape tilted his body to the side, like when you tilted your head.
"Master Koichi wants to take you in and help you get even better than what you already are", Ash continued. "Ashley and I really want you to get stronger, but…"
"We're not as experienced as Master Koichi or any other veteran Trainers", I spoke up. "Ash and I can't really help you because we lack experience, so we want the best for you. We'll pick you up when it's time for the League."
"Yeah", Ash nodded. "So… What do you guys say?"
Bruce and Primeape looked at each other and walked to a corner to have a private discussion. Ash and I watched them silently as they talked back and forth. It looked like for a second that Primeape wanted to throw a fit, but Bruce punched him hard on top of the head to calm him down.
A few minutes later, Bruce and Primeape walked back to us and spoke calmly, although none of us understood what they said. "Primeape ape prime prime primeape", Bruce said.
"You want to stay here?" Ash asked.
"Primeape!" Primeape nodded before he punched his fists against each other.
"A wise decision", Koichi smiled. "I promise you, twins, I'll look after them and make them stronger before the League."
"Thank you, Master…", I nodded softly before giving Bruce a big hug. "I know you'll do well, Bruce…"
"Prime prime…", Bruce nodded against my body before wrapping his arms around me.
I couldn't help but get a little emotional. Bruce was the first Pokémon I caught on my first day of the journey. I was going to miss him so much, but I knew we were going to see each other again.
XXXXXXXXXX
Ash and I gave Master Koichi Bruce and Primeape's Poké Balls and received the Poké Balls of Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan before we left the dojo. Master Koichi, our Primeapes, and the other pupils and Pokémon waved good-bye to us. We waved back before hurrying to the Pokémon Center and tell Misty, Brock, and Pikachu the news.
Misty and Brock got surprised by our decision, but they supported it.
"It was a good choice", Brock nodded. "You two are doing your best to learn a lot, but you've just started your journey. Sometimes, it's perfectly fine to accept help from other people to train Pokémon."
"I'm sure Master Koichi will make Bruce and Primeapes much stronger before the League", Misty added.
"Pikachu…", Pikachu spoke sadly from Ash's shoulders.
"Yeah, but it's going to feel a little weird without Bruce", I said. "After all… He was the first Pokémon I caught."
"I know the feeling, sis", Ash nodded as he caressed Pikachu's cheek. "Pikachu was the first Pokémon I caught and if I had to leave him behind somewhere… I would feel a little empty."
"Pikachu."
"But Master Koichi was nice and gave us two Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee he has trained for long time", I told the others. "He said we should observe them to learn more about fighting-type Pokémon."
"He gave you those two?" Brock asked in surprise before smiling. "Wow, that was very generous of him."
"Which Hitmon-Pokémon did you two pick?" Misty wondered.
Ash and I smiled to each other before we grabbed the Himons' Poké Balls and called them out.
"Come out, Hitmonlee!"
"Join us, Chanchan!"
"Hitmonlee!"
"Hitmonchan!"
"I guess, by the nickname, you chose Hitmonchan, Ashley", Brock chuckled.
"Yes", I nodded before I gently placed a hand on Chanchan's shoulder. "I'll look forward training and traveling with you, Chanchan."
"Hitmonchan!" Chanchan nodded with a smile.
"Let's work together all the way to the League, Hitmonlee!" Ash said determinedly.
"Hitmonlee!" Hitmonlee nodded before kicking the air.

To tell you the truth, I accidently deleted Wanda's Bite move when she learned a new move. I was using the speed-up button of the emulator and didn't realize what I had done until I un-toggled the "cursed" button.
I have an important question to you guys; shall I make Misty's Psyduck evolve into a Golduck in the future or not?
