Avatar: The Legend of Aang

Book One: Fire

Disclaimer: I own nothing from The Last Airbender

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. My uncle told me stories of the old days - a time of peace - when the Avatar kept peace between the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But all of that changed when the Northern and Southern Water Tribes became united and attacked the world. Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only he could stop the savage Waterbenders. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.

A hundred years have passed and the United Water Tribe is nearing victory in the war. When the war came to the Fire Nation, many of our citizens fled to the Earth Kingdom, my family and myself included. During the chaos, my mother was not found. After settling into a large town, my father gathered as many soldiers as he could and went Fire Nation to help defend our home, leaving my brother and I to look after our town.

Some say the Avatar wasn't reborn an Airbender and thus, the cycle is broken, but I haven't given up hope. I know that the Avatar will somehow return to save the world.

Two young teenagers, a boy and a girl, were walking through the woods near their town. The boy had the scar of a burn on his face around his left eye while the girl had a special gold bracelet on her left wrist.

"I hope this is important, Azula. Uncle needs our help at the Jasmine Dragon." The boy said. "And why did you have me bring a bow and arrow?"

"Trust me, Zuko. This will be worth it." The girl said, carrying her own bow and quiver of arrows. "Learn to relax, big brother."

Zuko sighed as he and Azula came across a herd of fox antelope then he looked at her. "We'll need some help if we're going to catch a few of these for the town."

"We can handle them, Zuzu, but we can get help to carry back what we need from this herd." Azula smirked then set an arrow on the bowstring and pulled back.

Zuko rolled his eyes and readied his bow too. The prince and princess loosed several arrows, downing several of the herd. Unfortunately, the others became aware of the siblings and ran. They got some help from town with carrying their kill back to help feed the townsfolk.

When they were gone, Azula looked at an iceberg and waked to it, Zuko following her. When they arrived, Zuko looked at her. "What are you planning?" He asked.

"I wanna try something with my firebending." She said.

He sighed. "Make it quick."

Azula smirked then held up two fingers and focused on making a small blue fire above her fingers she tried to slice the iceberg with it, but the fire died out long before reaching the iceberg, causing Azula to groan in frustration.

Zuko chuckled. "And you and Dad say you're a prodigy." Zuko teased.

Azula glared at him. "I am a prodigy! Out of the two of us, I picked up the basics when we were kids while you struggled to do that!" She said, shooting off fire at the iceberg behind her, causing it to crack.

"Um, Azula..." Zuko started.

"I moved onto the more advanced sets while you were stuck learning the basics!" Azula said, shooting off more fire behind her.

"Azula..." Zuko tried again.

"Uncle even taught me to do this!" Azula said then charged up lightning and shot it at the iceberg without turning back to look at the iceberg as it began to crack more and more. "So I'm twice the Firebender you'll ever be!" She finished as the top half of the iceberg exploded, revealing a giant sphere and the royal siblings looked at it. Azula saw what looked like a large creature and a young person in the sphere.

"I think there's someone in there." Azula said then pulled Zuko's dual broadswords out.

"Azula, wait!" He said. "Do not hit that sphere!" He ordered but Azula already stabbed into the ice and it cracked then broke open, releasing a powerful blast of wind as a light shot from the dome.

On a United Water Tribe cutter ship, a boy who looked fifteen saw the light as well. He had two scars from a scratch over his right eye and blue regal looking clothes. His weapons included a traditional Water Tribe battle club, and a boomerang.

"Finally." He smirked then looked at the man with him. "Zarano. Do you know what this means?" He asked.

"I won't be able to finish my game?" The man asked as he sipped a cup of tea.

"My search is about to end." The boy said.

Zarano simply sighed.

"That light came from something powerful. It had to be him!" The boy said.

"Or it's the celestial lights. We've been over this many times, Prince Sokka. Don't get so worked up over nothing." Zarano said. "Why don't you join me for a cup of tea?"

"I don't need tea!" Sokka snapped. "I need the Avatar captured! Captain, head for that light!"

Zuko set an arrow to his bow and prepared to shoot at what looked like a twelve year old boy with an arrow tattooed on his forehead.

"Stay there!" He said but the boy slid to the bottom of the broken sphere. Azula caught him, however and looked at him.

Zuko prodded the boy with his bow a couple times.

"Cut it out, Zuko!" Azula snapped, swatting his bow back as the boy started to wake up. She looked at him. "Are you okay?"

"I think so." The boy said as he stood on his feet.

"How did you end up in the ice and remain unfrozen?" Zuko asked.

"Not sure."

A strange noise was heard then the boy ran to a giant sleeping creature and hugged its head. The creature had six total legs on it, a large tail, and horns on its head. The boy tried waking the beast and it soon did, licking his back in the process as it stood on its feet.

"What is that?"

"This is my flying bison, Appa."

"Right. And this is my flying sister, Azula."

"So...you guys live nearby?"

"Don't tell him anything, Azula. With that bolt of light, he must've been trying to signal the Water Armada."

"I'm sure he's a spy for the Water Armada. You can tell by the evil in his eye." Azula said sarcastically.

The boy arched a brow.

"This is Zuko, my paranoid older brother. What's your name?"

"Aang." The boy replied after a sneeze launched him several feet into the air.

Azula's eyes widened. "You're an Airbender!"

Aang smiled softly and nodded. "Yes, I am."

"Light beams, sky bison, Airbenders, I think I've been in the sun too long. I'm headed home." Zuko said then realized they had no way home.

"Appa and I can help you guys home."

"That'd be great, thanks!" Azula smiled.

"I am not getting on that thing." Zuko said.

"Have fun swimming home then, Zuzu."

Aang stifled a snicker. "'Zuzu'?"

Zuko sighed. "Fine." He said then the prince and princess got on Appa's saddle.

"Yip Yip!" Aang said to Appa, who then jumped up...only to splash into the water

"Impressive." Zuko said sarcastically.

"He's just tired. A little more time and he'll be back to flying in not time."

Azula noticed Aang smiling at him. "Something to smile about?" She asked curiously.

"I was smiling?" The Airbender asked, causing Zuko to let out a loud groan.
