The area buzzed in excitement as Kaminari walked to school. He donned his jacket over his uniform to try and hide his status as a member of UA from the public, not wishing to be swarmed again.
He walked down where they were told to go for preparations for the festival. He saw the walkway was lined with street vendors selling food and assorted trinkets of heroes and other merchandise.
He shivered at the thought.
"Come on, you made some of the squid tentacles charred!" He didn't like when he had to cook for his community service. He still hadn't figured out how to control the intensity of Swampfire's blasts. So he might have charred a few pieces of food when trying to speed up the process of cooking.
Which reminded him to never eat alien food. Half the stuff he cooked was alive. Some of the squids used their suction cups and latched themselves onto him and he had to try and pull them off.
Luckily, Swampfire was strong enough to do so. But when he accidently turned into Upgrade, that wasn't fun.
He turned the corner to a small side building near the arena. Yesterday, Aizawa gave them the instructions on where to go when the festival was about to start. Three locker rooms for each class, where they would use them to prepare for events and hold their bags and such.
"Wait." Kaminari stopped as someone blocked him from the door. They had a clipboard on their side and what looked like an ear piece on them. Security he figured. He held out his hand towards Kaminari.
"U.A. ID please." Kaminari nodded and began to dig into his pockets for his id. He began to pat them quicker as he started to realize their emptiness. The guard looked at him annoyed as he was starting to waste time.
"Uh, you wouldn't happen to have some other way of identification right? Does my uniform count?" He opened his jacket to show his tie and grey coat underneath and the guard shook his head.
"No way of verifying you didn't steal it or make it yourself." He explained. Kaminari sighed at his response. This was going to be annoying.
"Well, do you have any other way to identify me? A teacher or something?" He asked. The guard pulled out his clipboard and flipped it over.
"Name?"
"Uh, Denki Kaminari." He responded. He browsed the list until he stopped and looked back at him for a second before briefly returning to his list.
"What's your quirk? Also include drawbacks as well." Kaminari blinked at that. Are they like trying to stop impersonators or something?
"Electrification. Shoot electricity, that sort of thing. And uh… I dumb out when I go over my watt limit." He mumbled that last part out of embarrassment. The guard nodded and looked down at his sheet.
"Remember what you got on your apprehension exam?" Kaminari blinked before it became clear to him. This must have been made by Aizawa to be specific enough for people to mess up.
"I got 16th overall." He said. He was happy he actually remembered it specifically, since a lot has happened since then. The guard nodded and he moved out of the way of Kaminari.
"You got around 40 minutes before the festival starts. You were already instructed on how to prepare, correct?"Kaminari nodded as he walked in. He trekked through the halls, noticing the difference in the sound. It was quiet.
He noticed the room his class was assigned and he made his way inside. He noticed a large portion of his class was already there. He noticed Midoriya, Jirou, Ashido and Bakugou were some of the people in gym clothing, but evident by the bags suggested there were others.
"So how are you guys?" Kaminari asked nervously.
"I'm good. Ready to crush the competition!" Ashido cheerfully said. Behind her, Bakugou scoffed.
"Yeah right Racoon eyes." Bakugou said without any hint of compassion. Ashido looked at him with shock written over his face as Midoriya nervously chuckled. Jirou was silent as she glanced at him.
'Tough crowd.' He decided as he dropped his bag at the locker he was assigned to yesterday. Grabbing the gym clothes inside, he made his way to the boys changing room. But before he went in, Todoroki walked past him. He bumped into his shoulder but he didn't even stop his stride.
'Well… I guess he gave me the cold shoulder.' Kaminari chuckled to himself at his joke as he walked into the room. He immediately saw Kirishima and Sero, who were talking to each other.
"Hey!" He waved to the two and they waved back. He walked up to them and dumped his gym clothes off.
"How's it going, chore man?" Sero chuckled. Kaminari's mood instantly got sour and he growled. Kirishima laughed.
"It's fine dude. You got some benefit out of it. Maybe…" He guessed with uncertainty. Kaminari sighed.
"Well, I hope I can finish soon." He grumbled. They nodded with him and they started to walk off. But Kirishima turned around and gave him a thumbs up.
"Good luck Kaminari." He nodded to them and gave them a thumbs up and a smirk.
"Good luck to you guys as well."
…
"WELCOME ALL TO THE FAMOUS UNITED ALLIANCE'S SPRING SPORTS FESTIVAL! WHERE YOU'LL SEE THE GREAT STUDENTS OF THE FUTURE BASH AND CLASH AGAINST EACH OTHER FOR A RUSH TO THE TOP!" Kaminari flinched under the sound of Present Mic's voice over the intercom of the arena. The crowd roared in anticipation which didn't help with the fact they're essentially with every class of their year.
A lot of eyes on him and his friends.
"Well, this is certainly a crowd." Sero pointed out, despite the obvious. Kirishima nodded as he looked around as well.
"Plus, there is everyone watching from home too." He informed them. Kaminari thought for a second about Undertown. He wondered if any of them would be watching them compete. Mura might.
"Well, to help my coworker better explain it, welcome to the Sports Festival hosted by U.A. High, where as he said and like the previous years, students compete to the top. As per usual, the festival will consist of 3 main events, with an intermission full of recreational games between the second and third events." Aizawa's voice came over the intercoms next as there were sounds of footsteps coming onto the platform in front of them. The group of students seemed to get a rowdy as they saw Midnight strut onto the platform above and crack her whip.
"It still amazes me she managed to get a job here with the title of R-Rated Hero." Sero mumbled with flushed cheeks. Kirishima nodded all the while also possessing the red cheeks.
"I'm all for it." Kaminari chuckled as he gave himself a small fist pump at the sight. The two sighed before they collectively facepalmed.
"We need to work on that." Sero grumbled.
"And to be the main proctor of the festivities, the pro hero Midnight will continue from here." Aizawa added before his mic cut out and Midnight cracked her whip which echoed throughout the stadium.
"Attention all! I will only explain this once! The overall rules of this activity are simple. No maiming for the sake of maiming. If you're not in the hero course, any use of permitted items is allowed." Kaminari mentally glossed over that fact with the Omnitrix. Luckily they allowed him to keep it since he explained it was "busted".
"No external help is permitted, however working together is allowed, just know that this is an elimination styled tournament so be careful with who you side with. Wouldn't want to ally with a backstabber…" Midnight licked her lips in what reminded Kaminari of Bateson's sadistic pleasure. He shivered at the thought of his teacher having that kind of personality.
"Before we continue, we will have the student who scored the highest on the entrance exam give the Sports Festival opening speech, please give a warm welcome to Katsuki Bakugou!" Kaminari's eyes widened in fear as the student in question made his way to the stage.
Here comes something even he knew would be a dumb move. His steps echoed as 1-A seemed the most tense and fearful of what would happen next. He approached a mic that Midnight left him and looked up at the crowd.
"My name's Bakugou. And I'm going to win."
And then the class and crowd exploded. Albeit for different reasons. The crowd erupted from the bold and brash nature of his proclamation. They were excited and were expecting a great show from someone who gave the greatest results for the impossible entrance exam.
And then the class did it because they were reasonably angered by his proclamation.
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?" The entire grade roared although Bakugou remained stoic as he walked down the stage. Kaminari looked around and could feel the animosity emanate from everyone towards them.
"Bakugou! Are you crazy!? Now everyone hates us more than before!" Ashido yelled over the crowd while she pointed her finger at him. He barely glanced over his shoulder as he looked at her.
"If you guys can't handle a bunch of nobodies, what can you do against a villain?" The class started to yell and shout insults at them as Kaminari looked at him like they didn't just all risk their lives a week prior at the USJ.
"I mean, he is kinda right but he could really tune down the remarks. I'll see if I can talk to him about it later." Kirishima whispered to them. The two looked at him.
"You can get through that nuclear bunker called his head?" Sero asked while casually mentioning the insult. Luckily, Bakugo didn't seem to hear him over the shouts of both the crowd and the angry mob around them.
"Yeah. When I'm not with you guys, I'm usually with him. He's fairly decent when you get to know him." Kirishima explained to the surprised duo.
"We sure we are talking about the same Bakugou? The same Bakugou that wanted to turn Midoriya into a scorch mark on the floor several times on the first day of classes?" Kaminari asked with a hint of concern in his voice.
"He's a lot better when he uh…" Kirishima trailed off as he tried to figure out how to continue.
"Won't react like a nuclear fallout?" Sero added with a chuckle. Kaminari giggled at that before they turned their attention back to Midnight. A screen on the side of the arena flared to life as she pointed her whip at it.
"Now, by turning your attention to the screen, the first event will be revealed!" Everyone watched the television as what looked like a lotto slot machine began to spin. Finally, it started to slow down and Kaminari gulped in anticipation.
"And it looks like our first event is… an Obstacle Course!" She yelled. The screen shifted into a basic map of a track that started and ended with the arena. Kaminari noticed there were three large and empty looking fields scattered periodically throughout the track so he assumed they were the obstacle portions of the race.
"The rules of this race are simple. Stay on the track and get to the finish line as fast as possible. It's a four kilometer dash to the end and before you ask… You are permitted to use your quirks in any way you see fit, as long as it isn't directly attacking other students." Midnight added that part in with a sense of sultriness that was making her less and less appealing to Kaminari by the second.
"Be warned, only the first forty two spots will continue onwards." She added with a tone of urgency as she pointed towards the edge of the green.
"There is your starting line. Line up and prepare to start." She cracked her whip as many students rushed to get a good spot at the starting line. Kaminari wasn't so lucky and didn't manage to get a good spot, having to settle for the middle of the crowd. Kirishima and Sero were mixed into the crowd and Kaminari couldn't really notice anyone he knew off the top of his head.
"NOW, IS EVERYONE READY TO GO? MAKE WAY FOR THE FIRST RACE TO START, EVERYONE… GO!" There was no blank as everyone burst forward at the end of Present Mic's countdown. Kaminari felt like he was in a stampede as they filed into the small exit of the arena.
"And they are introduced to the unofficial first obstacle. The door." Aizawa said nonchalantly. Kaminari understood what he meant when he had his shoulder shoved into his cheek from someone else.
He really should have thought ahead with the fact that around a hundred students all rushed through the door at the same time. He couldn't even see the entrance over the sea of students, all name calling each other and yelping in pain.
He needed an idea on how to get out. He didn't have the strength to push his way through and he definitely isn't going under.
Well, then he was going to try it. It would be like being Spidermonkey.
He grabbed the shoulders of the closest person to him and pulled himself up. They were packed tightly enough that the person didn't buckle enough before they hit the person in front of them.
So then began the weirdest crawl of his life. It was difficult for him to maintain a steady pace as people tried to throw him off or just move in general, but he managed to get towards the front before the hallway was enveloped in ice. Luckily, he was spared from getting frozen in place.
He looked up as more rumbles came from the front. He recognized several of his classmates had already started to make their way forward over a path of ice he assumed was caused by Todoroki.
He heard something muffled as he scooted his way onto the ice. He pushed himself on the ground, horribly regretting not trying to use the Omnitrix and to not just use Crashopper. He was distracted from his thoughts as he heard conflict as the ice path started to end. He looked up and his jaw dropped.
"That's… that's a lot of Zero-Pointers." Kaminari mumbled to himself in fear. He heard something approaching him and he turned to his side to see a Two-Pointer rushing him with raised arms. It brought it's arm down to crush him and Kaminari barely moved out of the way before it managed to do so. He threw his hand towards it as it was coated in electricity and the electricity traveled onto the bot, frying it and making it collapse to his side.
He looked onto the path. There was a zero pointer laying on the ground, coated in frost and broken. Several of his classmates already were starting to pass them and progressing onwards. He glanced at the icy bot and grumbled.
'For a guy who's quirk is basically a frost machine, he's somehow beating everyone and we have two members of our class who could have the power to fly and one with engines in his legs.' He groaned and started to run towards the Zero pointers. He remembered just the terror he felt when he had originally seen them but now they just lost most of that terror factor.
"You go Coop!" He glanced behind him at a fairly pretty pink haired girl and shook his head. Not now, just get to the finish line.
He sprinted towards the legs of the behemoths and weaved into the legs of the Zero pointer. The large group of students mained to have it's attention diverted from him so he had the ability to pass them without issue.
Looking ahead, it was clear only the hero class students were realistically going to win, as he noticed most were from his own class and the remaining few were from the other class, 1-B.
He grunted as he picked up his pace. He was really starting to wonder how Todoroki managed to be so fast. It just baffled him. Maybe the guy did those mile runs freaks took in the morning instead of sleeping in.
"This is your warning for participants reaching the second obstacle. Falling off will result in disqualification." Kaminari cranked his head towards a speaker by the edge of the track. He looked back before stopping himself to look at this second obstacle.
A giant chasm opened before him, with pillars all linked up by various cables. Glancing down, he noticed a net deep down. He looked back up and noticed several people were already making their way across.
"Ok, how can this school afford all this…" He mumbled as he got down on his knees and grabbed a close wire. He moved forward and instantly flipped upside down. His heart sank as he slowly moved forward.
'Please don't slip. Please don't slip. And no one get on this wire.' He started to feel sweat drip off his forehead as he kept on. He glanced up and reached one of the first pillars. He climbed up onto it and glanced back. More people had reached and were starting to climb the wires, but struggling to do so.
One thing that amazed him was the distance he cleared. It seemed so short. He turned and got back on another wire, flipping upside down again and began to make his way on it. Now he was aware of his actions, he realized it was a lot simpler than he originally thought. As he moved on, he felt less nervous and he started to move slightly faster.
When he reached one of the few pillars towards the end, he looked at his progress. Surprisingly, he managed to pass most of the people ahead of him. The only few he could tell were still in front of him were Tsu, Iida and Uraraka. He assumed Todoroki and Bakugo had already passed, judging by the fact he could no longer see them.
He took a breath. Just a little bit to go.
He continued along his wire and soon hoisted himself over the edge. He stood, and noticed how his body felt sore and fatigued. Well, he wasn't surprised about that now that he thinks about it.
He shook his head and started to jog along the path. While running, he managed to catch a glimpse of Uraraka looking over an empty field. Her face was filled with a mixture of planning and terror. Kaminari slowly made it to her side and looked over the field in front of them. There didn't seem to be anything of interest here, just random spots of lighter colored dirt scattered throughout the field. Todoroki seemed to be treading through it with caution, avoiding the spots on the ground.
Kaminari glanced at Uraraka with a puzzled look. "Uh, what's going on?" She glanced at him and nervously chuckled.
"Oh just that…" She pointed towards the side and Kaminari finally noticed the giant billboards with bright colors. Kaminari quickly read over it and gulped.
A minefield. That's nice.
"I'm seriously starting to think some sadist runs our school." He mentioned tiredly. Uraraka chuckled nervously with him.
"This school's budget is insane." She mumbled. Kaminari nodded before turning his attention to the minefield. Now that he knew it was a minefield, Todoroki's bizarre movements made sense, along with the patches of dirt.
He gulped before he shook his head.
He had a race to win.
He took a step forward. And then another. Each step required an increasingly more complicated twist and turn to avoid the land mines. Several times, he almost stumbled and fell onto them. He glanced behind him, noticing more and more people were starting to reach this part of the course. He recognized most of his class had made it, with maybe the exception of Aoyama. Maybe he got a stomach ache or his quirk stopped while he was flying over the pits.
He looked back towards his goal and picked up his pace.
Then he felt it. The ground shook as a boom rang in his ears. He turned behind him to see a large plume of pink smoke rise from the ground, and the vague figure of Sero soaring through the air.
"Ouchhh, that's gotta hurt." He whispered to himself. And that's when he noticed another thing.
A enraged Bakugo who was speeding towards the front with the impression of murder.
Kaminari watched as he rocketed past him but then grew confused when he started to turn towards Todoroki.
"YOU'RE MINE!" He howled as he threw his hand down, creating an explosion that stirred up dust. It blew Todoroki back and caused him to lose his balance, but he created ice to catch himself. Bakugo didn't stop there, before propelling himself forward to fire some more blasts at him.
'Is he crazy!? He's giving up first place just for what? Petty revenge?!' He thought before he remembered what had happened earlier.
'Oh yeah, the declaration.'
"Man, why can't we use our hero outfits? We haven't used them a lot and they're cool!" Ashido complained. Tokoyami and Ojiro glanced at her while everyone finished up preparing for the tournament.
"Because only the hero course has them, and they provide us with supplements to our quirks that the other students won't have. It's not fair for them to not have that buff." Tokoyami explained to her as she groaned.
'But Ashido and Aoyama still get specialized gear…' Kaminari thought to himself, taking a glance at Ashido's holed boots and Aoyama's belt. To be honest, he didn't really think about adding anything to help his quirk in his costume, only the radio for communication.
"Midoriya." Everyone turned to Todoroki as he loomed over the boy in question, who was talking to Uraraka and Iida at a table in the room. He turned to him confused as was much of the class. Todoroki had already shown he wasn't too keen on being social with his classmates, or just in general.
"Uh, yeah?" Midoriya replied to him.
"Your quirk is a true enigma. That's why I'll say this. I'm going to win, and beat you."
'Guess Bakugo didn't like that.' He thought as he watched the two squabble. He took a step forward, ready to advance before he felt the ground shake with far greater intensity than ever before. He felt the wind part above him as a shadow passed overhead. He glanced up and saw the vague form for a rectangle soar above them over Bakugou and Todoroki.
Then he saw it.
The faint form of a person.
"No way…" He whispered to himself in astonishment. He turned his attention back to Bakugou and Todorki who looked at the flying object in astonishment. He watched as the two quickly surged forward to get in front of the insane student who managed to get in front of everyone with whatever move he did.
This can't get any better, can it?
Then he watched in astonishment as whoever was the source of the strategy slammed their shield onto the ground, setting off several mines and enveloping the front in a pink cloud. He covered his face as dust and the pink mist rolled through the field. He looked back up and looked through the mist, seeing the three students had already passed the final obstacle.
"Screw it." He grumbled and Kaminari bolted. He felt the ground rumble as mines exploded behind him, pushing him forwards. He fell on the ground as other students ran past him. He pushed himself up as quick as he could and ran forward. He watched as Sero and Kirishima passed him. The stadium made its appearance as it grew larger, along with the shouts and cheer of the crowd inside.
He found one of the tunnels and ran inside behind the student with gray hair. He pushed himself forward, one last push to try and surpass him but it was in vain as he cleared the tunnel before him. The light of the stadium filled his eyes as he entered the center.
"Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu has achieved tenth place! Denki Kaminari has achieved eleventh!" Kaminari collapsed on his knees as exhaustion set in. He started to gasp for air as Sero and Kirishima walked to him.
"Already out of it? Guess that adrenaline helped you." Sero chuckled.
"Nah, I think the sprint at the end probably was more exhausting to him." Kirishima said, looking at Sero. Kaminari glanced up at them with an exhausted look.
"I'm right here you know. I think I had the adrenaline on my side… although that sprint at the end wasn't fun." He mumbled. The two chuckled as they looked around. Kaminari glanced up at the board, he barely heard Present Mic announce more and more places as students finished. He saw that the board was starting to fill up with the places for the race and he scanned for his name.
"Eleventh. Nice. And you guys got eighth and ninth. That's pretty good." He mentioned as he stood. He looked around, seeing a lot of his classmates and the other hero course students.
"Yeah, but that pales with Midoriya's flying wonder tactic." Sero joked. Kaminari glanced at him with a puzzled look before Sero gestured towards the board. He looked up and looked at the very top of the board.
Midoriya was sitting in first place.
He was the guy who used the explosives to his advantage.
Kaminari glanced back at Sero and Kirishima. "Are… Are we sure we are talking about the same Midoriya? No way he was the guy who did the flying shield thing. Any social interaction makes him crumble like a piece of tissue paper." He said in disbelief.
"Coming from the guy that got exhausted from sprinting around twenty meters when he had spent the week running across a city doing community service." Sero deadpanned. Kaminari looked at him tired and groaned.
"Different bodies!" he hushed. They rolled their eyes at him as they looked away from him at the board again. The final spot lit up with Aoyama's portrait which prompted Kaminari to glance at him as he entered the arena. His face was contorted in pain as he held his stomach in pain.
"Poor guy." He mumbled to himself.
"Now that every slot has been claimed for advancement, we will announce the next competition!" Midnight yelled over everyone. Kaminari glanced at the screen as a slot machine rotated through the list of possible events.
Which he was fairly certain was picked prior to the whole festival being hosted.
"And our next event is… A cavalry battle!" Midnight shouted. She cracked her whip as the screen changed.
"Rules are simple. You will form teams between three to four people and get into a stance similar to the Horse game. Everyone will be given a headband and the one being carried has to wear every band the team has. The goal is simple. Gather as many headbands as possible. The catch is that only your original headband can be wrapped around your head, everything else must be around your neck." She explained.
"I get it, so the more bands you have the more difficult it is to manage them all." Yaoyorozu guessed.
"Correct. The key part here is that every band is worth a different set of points, which is dependent on the placement of the race. A few more obligatory rules are simple. You won't be eliminated if you lose all your bands or you collapse. Finally, similar to the obstacle race, purposely maiming someone with your quirk is not allowed." She explained. Kaminari nodded.
He had a small feeling that was mainly for Bakugou.
"Miss, I was wondering. How much are the bands for?" Kirishima asked. She turned her attention to him and Kaminari felt uneasy with her sick smile at the words.
'There's going to be a massive twist to this, isn't there?' He complained.
"The forty second band is worth one point, the forty first is worth 5." She explained.
'Wait for it…'
"Second is worth a couple hundred. And finally, to spice it up, first place is worth… one million points." And with that bombshell, everyone's heads cracked towards the pale Midoriya as his soul seemed to drain from his body.
"There- The other bands add up to that right?" Midoriya whimpered. Midnight showed no mercy as she gave another sly smile.
"Combined, the other bands barely pass three thousand points. To put it simply, whoever has that one band by the end of the event wins the entire thing. You won't even need the other ones to win." Kaminari nodded. He didn't expect that high of a point tally but at least he didn't have that.
"So are you going to team up with Midoriya?" Sero leaned in and whispered in his ear. Kaminari lightly giggled before he gave his response.
"No. You?" Sero chuckled.
"Nope. I would rather stay with a smaller number. I don't wanna have a target that massive on my back." He explained. Kaminari nodded to his settlement.
"Agreed. I wanna see if I can get with Todoroki." He told him.
"Because he's a powerhouse?"
"Maybe." He said with a tinge of mischievousness. Sero sighed.
"Implying he wants you on his team." Kaminari stared at him with a sarcastic grin.
"Of course he would. I have an electrifying personality." He laughed at his joke while Sero groaned.
"I swear, I'm going to shatter your knee caps later." He jokingly threatened. Kaminari nodded with fear and worry. He didn't know if he would actually follow through with that at some point, plus he hung out with some weird tech goblins so he didn't want to see him actually use something with that threat.
"The students will first have a lunch break before we continue, so students! Formulate plans and teams! Rest up if you need." Midnight directed that partially towards them and the crowd watching. Kaminari's stomach growled as everyone started to migrate towards the school building. Kaminari glanced towards Sero and Kirishima and walked towards them.
"Are we going to form a team?" Kirishima asked them as they walked.
"Well, I don't think we have too. We could if we all wanted to." Sero said. Kaminari nodded.
"Well, let's just do this after lunch. Aren't they doing some american food special or something with fries?" Kaminari said.
"No clue, I'm just hungry." Kirishima admitted.
Hey, yeah I know this was a long time to do this chapter. Took a while for my motivation to come back for me to just write this.
