An ocean of students spanned as far as Kaminari could see. The air was buzzing with a general lack of interest in the festivities now, as most of the ones in there weren't going to continue onwards.
The remaining students, mainly the hero students, were responding as one would have imagined from a large scale event like this. Students were darting from table to table, trying to form their teams or to achieve good favor with the higher scored bands.
"So what are your plans? I know you wanna try for a spot on Todoroki's team, but that leaves me and Kirishima." Sero, Kirishima and Kaminari were all sitting together in the corner, away from most of the other students for some sense of privacy from the rest of their grade.
"I think I might go and see if Bakugou wants to be on a team with me. I think we might work better than most of our grade." Kirishima theorized. Sero scoffed and set his utensils down.
"That shouldn't be hard. You're probably the only person he has memorized by name. That and "Midoriya"" He flexed his fingers to emphasize the obvious reason towards Bakugou and Midoriya's relationship.
If you could even call it that.
"Why does he even hate him? Has either mentioned it?" Kaminari asked with concern. Both shrugged at his question. Kaminari nodded and looked towards the tables where both of the targets of their conversation were eating. Bakugou was eating by himself, which didn't seem to bother him. Midoriya was eating with Uraraka and Iida, all looking well engaged in a conversion that got Iida and Midoriya moving.
"Maybe they knew each other from their previous school?" Kirishima wondered. Sero nodded, poking at his food.
"That's probably why. His ego probably didn't like Midoriya's strong quirk and Midoriya's soft-spoken nature is probably another reason for that ego to inflate." Sero theroized.
"But why would that happen? I mean, Midoriya's quirk is flashy but the drawback is insane." Kirishima asked.
"Well, maybe he has one of those progressively growing quirks. It just grew too rapidly out of control for him to handle, maybe?" Kaminari told them.
"Maybe it's tied to his body strength. For a kid with that much of an antisocial personality, I was surprised at how beefy he was when we changed at the locker room." He added. The two nodded as they continued eating.
"So he has a quirk that increases in power the more muscle he has. That makes sense." Sero concluded.
"Not the strangest ability I have heard of." Kirishima said with a chuckle.
"That reminds me, you have two more forms, right Kaminari?" Sero whispered. Kaminari nodded. He never bothered to turn into them for the past week and any time he managed to transform into the wrong form, it gave him ones he had prior.
"What about it?" Sero asked as he leaned forward.
"I mean, I'm kinda curious about what they are. You have two electric like aliens, a giant grasshopper, a monkey, a blob of tech, giant chicken, a speed dinosaur and a plant." Kaminari nodded.
"And so, I was thinking that during the intermission, we find a place not really watched and we see what the one of the new aliens is." He asked. Kaminari looked at him and thought.
"Well, that would need to go somewhere not watched. But yeah! I'm down to see that and try it out." Kaminari cheerfully agreed.
"I wonder if we've seen one of your last ones before." Kirishima wondered.
"It's possible. Undertown is crazy with the species it has and this is coming from a guy who can turn into a 7 foot tall plant and living extension cord." Kaminari flung his hands up for emphasis on his point.
"That's fair. Although I think using your Swampfire transformation isn't fair. We have met their species." Sero countered. Kirishima sighed.
"I haven't even seen this Swampfire. Do they look like Eric?" Kirishima asked Kaminari. He thought for a second before shaking his head.
"There are a few differences. Don't know why though. XLR8 looks different from the other Kinercelerans too for some reason." He remembered that some of the others had the sort of helm XLR8 had but others didn't. Claws were also a thing, which he seemed almost exclusive with.
"Maybe it's a thing with your Omnitrix? Like a glitch or something." Sero proposed.
"Would explain how you occasionally get the wrong alien." Kirishima added. Kaminari nodded while glancing down at the device.
It being glitched would explain why he does occasionally get the wrong alien. Maybe it just doesn't process him turning or it just messes up what he picks.
"Well, let's get ready to go. We still have a tournament to win." Sero stood taking his plate and the other two followed suit.
…
"WELCOME BACK LISTENERS! READY FOR ROUND TWO? GREAT!" Present Mic shouted over the speaker system. Everyone cringed under his voice, wishing for him to just use some form of a softer voice. Kaminari fingers ran over the band they were given for the cavalry battle. He looked down at the bold numbers and steeled his nerves.
'Just a simple event. You've done worse in the last week alone.' He reassured himself.
"Well, as my associate said, welcome back both watchers and students. We will give the students five minutes to form their teams and then we will officially start the Cavalry battle." Aizawa quickly stated. The crowd seemed bummed that they could immediately start but it was better to just wait the five minutes then another thirty minutes.
"A quick review of the rules! No less than four on a team and no more than five. No maiming for the sake of maiming. Falling off or losing your band doesn't matter… and whoever gets the million point band wins." Midnight added at last part from her stand as everyone quickly glanced towards Midoriya, who was as pale and ever, his hand shaking while it held the infamous band.
"Now, begin!" With a wave of her whip, the remaining participants went into a frenzy. Most went between their classmates for a team with a large portion of their own class flocking towards Bakugou or Todoroki for a spot on their team. Sero and Kirishima walked past Midoriya and towards Kaminari as he looked around.
"You ready?" Kirishima asked Kaminari, who chuckled.
"I suppose. I assume we aren't going to form a team ourselves? We don't have enough unless we wanna play dangerously." Sero joked with them. The group nodded before looking at the two powerhouses of the class. Kaminari looked towards Todoroki and Sero looked towards Bakugou along with Kirishima.
"So, let's wish for the best team to win. Hope I can see you guys at the finals." Kaminari held his hand out as an attempt of good will and the other two nodded before individually taking his hand and giving a firm shake.
"See you later." Sero waved him off as the two walked towards Bakugou. Kaminari nodded, turning towards Todoroki's mob. As he got closer, he watched as a few of his classmates left with sorrowful faces, likely from being told they weren't going to be on his team.
He approached the heterochromic teen and lightly waved to him. Yaoyorozu stood by his side, who was likely someone who was already on his team.
"Hey so Todoroki, I was wondering if I could join your team. I think I could bring something to the table with my quirk.."
"We were already planning on grabbing you." Todoroki cut him off before he could finish. Kaminari looked at him dumbfounded as Yaoyorozu nodded.
"Really?" He asked. Todoroki nodded as Iida approached them from behind.
"Greetings Todoroki, may I join your team for the cavalry battle?" Kaminari looked slightly up at Iida. He was amazed at the fact he was choosing to try and team up with Todoroki rather than Midoriya. He glanced back at the teen who was crying with Uraraka near him.
What amazed him the most, was that the sheer amount of water was causing a puddle to form under them.
He was immensely concerned for his classmate if he had the ability to cry that hard.
"Sure." He said. Iida blinked before readjusting his glasses. He bowed in gratitude before standing back up.
"I suppose you guys have a plan?" Iida asked the two. They nodded in response as Todoroki held out his hand. It took Kaminari a second before he realized he wanted their bands. He dropped his band in their hand along with Iida. Momo gave him hers as he began to tie them around his neck. Finally, he brought his band up and tied it around his head.
"So what is our plan?" Kaminari asked Yaoyorozu.
"Iida will be in the front, me and you will be on the sides and Todoroki will be our rider." Yaoyorozu said as she pulled up her sleeve. A thin band started to grow from her arm with a pink glow. After falling off her arm, a second one quickly followed. She picked up the two long strands and looked at Kaminari.
"May I see your arms?" Kaminari raised an eyebrow as he held his arms out. Yaoyorozu took the straps and began to wrap them around his arms. He shivered from the texture. He expected it to feel like cloth but it felt like rubber.
"Wait, they let you keep the watch?" Yaoyorozu asked after she finished his right arm and moved to his left.
"Uh yeah! It's a dud anyway. I just like how it looks." He quickly lied. His heart sank as Yaoyorozu began to inspect it more. His palms felt sweaty as he prayed that she didn't accidently activate the watch and display aliens to the whole world.
"I see how it's broken. Doesn't look like it can display time, let alone tell it accurately. I can try to fix it if you want. Shouldn't be too hard." Kaminari almost sighed in relief from Yaoyorozu's conclusion.
"Uh, no thanks. I'm fine if it doesn't work. Just looks cool." Luckily for him, she didn't touch the buttons or the faceplate hard enough to activate it and change him into one of his aliens.
Actually, now that he thinks about it. Can anyone else activate it? He never tried that out. Maybe he should have Sero or Kirishima try that later.
After inspecting his watch, She continued to wrap around the rubber strip on his arm, covering the Omnitrix as well. He looked at his bandaged arms as Yaoyorozu walked over to his right and moved his arm up.
"H-Hey!" He complained. She wrapped the rubber again, this time on his shoulder. Now his right arm looked like he was a mummy, except one that came from a costume store.
"Why am I bandaged up?" He asked them as Todoroki got on Iida's back. Yaoyorozu came to his right side and held him up. Kaminari took the position that remained and held him up too. No one had answered his question nor did they even acknowledge he said anything.
He quickly noticed that the position was awkward at first but he had been in awkward positions before. He did a quick glance around to see what the other teams were. The only one he thought was noteworthy was Bakugou's, who had Kirishima, Sero and Ashido on his team. Guess they did manage to get on a team with the nuclear weapons side.
All the other teams had already formed, with even Midoriya managing to get a team of four, with Uraraka joining him along with Tokoyami. The only person he didn't know or recognize was some pink haired girl with goggles. So she might be a support student. He did faintly see straps on Midoriya but he paid no real attention to them.
"ALRIGHT STUDENTS! Prepare yourself for the Cavalry battle! Direct your attention to the board!" Midnight yelled over the students. They cranked their heads towards the board, where there were several placements, using students as portraits. A number value was next to the names, with Midoriya having the million point score.
'So it's the leaderboard. Got it.' Kaminari thought over Midnight's explanation. His eyes drifted towards their own and he nodded.
"The four teams at the top will progress. Remember that." Everyone nodded to her words before they returned to the field filled with a mix of students roaring to go.
'Make it to the top four. Got it.' Kaminari reaffirmed himself. He glanced up at Todoroki who was looking around the field.
"So what's the plan? We have enough points to last to the top so we could just…" Kaminari asked him before he was cut off again.
"We're going to take the million point band." Kaminari sighed at the cold response as the other two nodded, turning their heads towards the team.
"Of course we do." He grumbled. Maybe getting onto a team with the guy that suddenly stated him and Midoriya were rivals was a bad idea.
"NOW! Everyone get ready!" Kaminari glanced back towards Midnight as she shouted over the crowd for a moment before returning his attention forward. He released his breath and steeled his nerves.
'You got this.'
"GO!" Kaminari, Yaoyorozu and Iida all moved forward as fast as they could. Well, at least Kaminari and Yaoyorozu did. Iida probably just lightly jogged and kept up a pace that didn't stop them from falling over. They tried to turn around but over the chaos of hearing feet stomping around them, they heard a sound akin to jet engines and glanced behind them.
They watched as Midoriya and his team started to soar above everyone else, as the pink haired girl started to cheer. That's when Kaminari noticed that most of the group had some form of metallic boots with powerful fans under the soles of the boot, which was propelling them up. Kaminari also assumed there was something with the straps on Midoriya's back.
"Alright then. New plan! Protect the bands." Todoroki told them. They all nodded and ran forward away from the general crowd. Kaminari watched from his side as several groups started to rush towards them. Kaminari didn't recognize them from his class, so they were likely from 1-B. Looking around, he noticed that seemed to be a common trait. The groups of his class getting swarmed by the groups of 1-B.
Well, that's fun.
"Do you guys have a more refined plan now?" Iida asked as they served out of the way of someone's quirk. Something flew past them and made an attempt to grab Todoroki's bands, only for to create a pole that intercepted them midway through their attempt. Todorki grabbed the pole and began to fend off flying pieces of someone's quirk with surprising finesse.
"OW! Hey, you're pretty good with that. No wonder you're a member of 1-A." The group glanced up to see a floating mouth with a toothy grin. The pieces that they were fighting merged together to form a small part of the face of a female student.
Ok so those pieces were her body, that's swell.
"Go!" Todoroki yelled as the student laughed and split again, making her body a swirling storm around them. Todoroki's attention was split between keeping each quick piece away from his body, while the rest were trying to keep the other groups from getting too close to them.
"We have to do something! I can't hold her off for much longer!" Todoroki informed his team as they nodded in agreement. Kaminari and Yaoyorozu were starting to tire from exhaustion while Iida looked around them. First at the swirling body parts and then at the teams around them.
"I don't see any leg pieces, nor anything that can resemble a neck. Her full body must not be here." Iida yelled at them. Yaoyorozu and Kaminari nodded as they looked around, now to see if they could find a student who looked like they were missing their body.
"Oh so you figured that out huh? Too bad none of you guys can truly hit my body! You can't attack me, Cold Stuff or Sparky!" The pieces taunted them. Kaminari glanced behind them when he noticed a group of students trailing behind them. The person they were carrying however, looked weird and reminded him of a glitched out model from a buggy video game.
"Wait! Behind us!" He yelled to his rider, who turned and nodded. He brought his pole down behind them as the air dramatically decreased in temperature.
"What are you doing? You can hit us without freezing your buddies!" The student called out, with a hint of fear in her voice.
"That would be the case, if I didn't have a good conductor." With that, his pole tapped the ground, coating itself in ice before creating a trail of ice that surged towards the group. The pieces flew back to their owner in a desperate attempt to reconnect before the ice froze the group but it was for naught. Their legs and lower torso became a frozen popsicle. The group sighed in their victory and began trying to defend themselves once more before Todoroki realized something.
"Why would freezing her original body in place be a downside…" He mumbled as the group ran forward. It was only a moment later before Todoroki realized.
"Wait, we're missing our bands!" The group immediately glanced up and saw that Todorki was missing all four of their bands. The panic began to settle as they glanced back at the student, waving the bands in her hand with a taunting grin.
"Did she grab them when you turned around?" Iida asked. Todoroki growled as a loud bang came from behind them again. They looked and watched as Midoriya and his group began to fall with Bakugou nearby. Assumption was that Bakugou had managed to damage one of their pieces of equipment, which was causing them to fall.
"Iida, get us over there now." Todoroki ordered. Iida stammered for a second before his face grew grim. He bent down, causing Yaoyorozu and Kaminari to readjust themselves.
"I didn't know I would have to use this here, but everyone hold on!" Kaminari smelled smoke as his legs grew warm. He glanced down and watched as Iida's engine pipes grew red hot. He gulped and greatly tightened his grip on Iida. There was the sound of his engines firing up, literally as blue flames spewed from his exhaust pipes. They almost seemed to threaten to ignite Kaminari's pants but they were too short to touch them, but he sure did feel the heat.
Then, it happened.
The full speed of Iida's engines flared to life, pulling the group forward with breakneck speeds. Kaminari's legs flew behind him as he fought to keep his head up. In a flash, the group managed to cover the near entirety of the field and past Midoriya's group, moments after they landed. Kaminari barely could process the situation but Todoroki seemed fine, as within that split second, he tugged on Midoriya's bands and pulled them off.
"Too slow." Midoriya barely could react as the group left them behind and slowed down before they could exit the arena. Turning around to get away from the edge, Todoroki brought his pole down again. Ice surged around the field, freezing as many people in place as he could.
"WOW! IN ONE FELL SWOOP, TEAM TODOROKI WENT FROM BEING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LEADERBOARD TO SNATCHING THE MILLION POINT BAND WITH A SURPRISING MOVE FROM YOUNG IIDA! NOT ONLY THAT BUT THEY MANAGED TO STOP THE COMPETITION DEAD IN THEIR TRACKS!" For the first time since the event started, Present Mic spoke. Todoroki tied the bands around his neck as he motioned for them to move towards the center. A few of the more quick responding students were already making moves on breaking out of their icy prisons, including Bakugou who looked down right pissed.
"Uh.. now what?" Kaminari panicked. It didn't didn't seem long before the pink glow from Yaoyorozu overcame his peripheral vision. A thick blanket fluttered above them and covered Yaoyorozu, Iida and Todoroki, leaving Kaminari out. He looked at Todoroki for an answer but he got a cold stare instead. He felt the texture of the blanket, noting it was rubber as well.
Wait, it reminded him of that blanket they use back at the USJ….
"That's why. Ok then." He grumbled as he sparked. None generated on his arm, or at least it was heavily suppressed by the rubber bandages on his arm. He concentrated as the electricity grew with more intensity.
"Alright, let's go all out!" He released the hold he had on his electricity, causing the field to light up in a yellow glow. The intense sound of buzzing as most of his grade got shocked and for those who knew him, yelled his name out in anger. Yaoyorozu, Iida and Todoroki were the only ones not affected, thanks to the blanket and bandages put in place. A short bit later, he assumed he had done enough damage. Most of the people who had posed a threat were essentially stunned.
And judging by the snot and headache he was getting, Kaminari assumed he had hit his limit too.
"Huhuh…" His mind dulled out as the scenery faded as he hit his short circuit. The rest of the time seemed to blur as he effectively became luggage. He saw the faint outline of bright red and green followed by some black shadow, but he couldn't think much about it.
Not like he really could anyway.
…
As he started to come too, he noticed the red and black heads of Kirishima and Sero looming over him. He sat himself up off a cot and looked around. He recognized the IV bags, machines and the walls lined with cots. He noticed a couple other students sitting around with blankets and bowls of steaming soup. Unlucky contenders of Todoroki's flash freeze, he guessed.
"Wait, why am I here?" He asked for an answer. He knew he wasn't cold or suffering from any form of paralysis.
"Yeah well, your dumb mode was something that hasn't really happened so to make sure you don't hurt yourself we just decided to slap you on a cot for safety." Sero explained. His checks grew warm at the idea of it but he pushed those ideas deep.
"How did you guys keep me there? I usually walk around when I short circuit." Kirishima's hand went under the cot and held up a loose piece of tape that was connected to the lower part of his cot.
"Oh. Did anyone actually see me?" He asked the two.
"Yes… Everyone did." Kaminari gulped at the prospect before Sero and Kirishima started to laugh. The other students glanced at him as Kaminari dug his hands into his face to hide in embarrassment.
"Yeah, that's a pretty funny downside to your quirk. Everyone found it hilarious! I think Jirou found it the most amusing." Sero remarked with a chuckle. Kaminari groaned as he got back up off the cot.
"Think you can give me the rundown of what happened? I don't really remember much after my discharge." He hastily made his way to the door as Recovery Girl glanced at him at his haste but made no comment at it.
"Yeah sure, we can go to my waiting room." Sero explained as the trio walked out of the nurse's office. The hallways were quiet, almost alien in a way. They got to the first staircase before Sero began to talk.
"Well, after you shocked everyone, Midoriya and his team freed themselves with Dark Shadow and managed to snag several bands off Todoroki. Then a short scuffle with Bakugou happened and the round ended. Your team had the million point band so you came in first, our team followed, some kid from 1-C with Ojiro and a 1-B kid got third and Midoriya's team got 4th." He informed Kaminari as he nodded his head.
"So we all managed to make it to the final round? Nice. What is it? The fighting contest like usual?" Sero and Kirishima nodded and Kaminari thought briefly of the students who passed.
"So what are the matchups?"
"Well, I got the first round… with Todoroki." Kaminari nervously chuckled at Sero as his face melted in stress.
"Good luck with that." He remarked, making Sero sigh in pain.
"I got the other student with a Hardening quirk, from 1-B. I hope it won't make me too bland." Kaminari glanced towards Kirishima as he displayed his self doubt for a moment before deciding to ease his mind off it.
"Who do I have?"
"A 1-B student named Ibara. Apparently some religious girl who was allowed in from Ojiro and the 1-B kid dropped out of the 1-C kid's team because of some strange feeling about him." Kaminari looked at Sero shocked.
"Ojiro dropped? But going onto the final part is the best way to stand out!" He complained. The two shrugged.
"At least you didn't see Midnight get… excited over his proclamation of winning with his own skill." Sero mumbled with some red cheeks.
"Or the girls in our class in cheerleader outfits." Kirishima added.
"Wait what!? I missed what!? When did that happen? Did you get pictures? Who looked the cutest?" Kaminari quickly turned and put his hands on the redheaded teen and shook him for answers.
"From what I gathered, Mineta tricked them into thinking Aizawa wanted them to do a cheerleader halftime show just to see them in skimpy outfits. And only Tooru and Ashido looked somewhat motivated to do anything with the situation." Sero told him. Kaminari growled in frustration.
"This is so not fair. Missed out on a chance of a lifetime." He groaned. The two rolled their eyes at him before making it to a hallway Kaminari was somewhat familiar with. It was the hallway of the locker rooms, so he assumed they would function as waiting rooms for the students about to have a match. Sero led them in and a single table was in the middle of the room, with a simple metal folding chair there. Blue lockers, similar to the one where they put their stuff in earlier, lined the walls.
The trio walked in and Kaminari watched as Sero carefully flipped the table over and moved it under the door as a blockade. With the table gone, the room opened up and looked rather large now.
"We have roughly twenty minutes until my match starts so let's see if you can transform." Kaminari blinked before he remembered their original plan. He nodded and walked into the center of the room, pressing open the hologram selector. The dial moved to one of the two last aliens he had yet to try and he pressed the buttons down, making the cylinder open.
"Are we sure this will work? That no one is going to come in and see me?" He asked the two.
"Nah, no one should really come here. We were told we have free time and privacy before our match to use these rooms, so I think we are good to try it here." Sero told him from the corner.
He nodded and sighed. He hoped whatever this alien was, they were small enough to fit in the room and not kill his friends in the process.
He brought his hand down and the flash enveloped him. He felt his veins bulge as his muscle mass increased. His spine elongated and snapped in place, forcing him onto his hands. Strangely enough, his arms lengthened as his legs grew slightly shorter. His head and neck seemed to merge into one as they grew longer. His face lost most of its features till only his mouth remained. Gills appeared on his neck as his body grew orange fur. His body finally shifted into a more dog like appearance as small quills grew along his body. Finally a dog collar appeared as the Omnitrix symbol appeared.
"Ok, so a large dog." Kirishima concluded. Kaminari cranked his head over towards Kirishima.
Or at least he thought it was Kirishima. He could see him, but he couldn't exactly see his face. He looked around somehow, without turning his head.
"Wow, this is weird." Kaminari mentioned it to them. The world looked weirdly colored, it honestly reminded him of infrared vision from spy games.
"Uh Kaminari?" He turned his head to Sero as he talked.
"Yeah?" He asked him.
"This one can't talk. You're just barking and making growling sounds." Kaminari's mouth opened agape as he felt some drool slobber out. He watched as Kirishima waved his hand in front of his face and messed with his fur on his face.
"You don't even have eyes. Nor a nose. How does this one function? You only have a mouth." Kaminari tilted his head in confusion. He scratched his neck, where his image slightly faltered. He poked that area, which caught the attention of the other two. They moved over and ruffled his fur.
"Oh you have gills… why?" Kirishima questioned with a hint of questionable concern.
"I wonder…" Kaminari watched as Sero took the chair and placed it behind him.
"Can you touch this chair?" Kaminari nodded and brought his hind leg up and tried to tap the chair. At the last second however, Sero moved it up. He growled and moved his feet to follow.
"Ok then, that's all I needed." He set the chair down and the group shuffled their way to his front.
"So I heard about this species, they're called Vulpimancers. Basically wild dogs with no eyes but they have some of the best senses in the galaxy. They basically are walking thermographs so they can probably see better than we can." He explained to all of them.
"So I'm just a wild animal.. And right, can't understand me." Kaminari groaned as he plopped down. It strangely felt natural to act like that, which made some sense because he would occasionally have the urge to eat corn as Kickin Hawk.
"They are also strong and powerful, like several horses. Also you guys are big. I think if we didn't move the table, you would have hit it anyway." Sero told him, which caused Kaminari to perk up.
"But you're still a dog so I wanna see.." Kirishima walked up to him and Kaminari watched as the tips of his fingers became pointed. He felt fear before he began to scratch his stomach.
And it somehow felt great.
"Yup, just a giant dog." They concluded. They let Kaminari be as he recovered from that.
"Now the question is… we have to wait ten minutes for this to run out." Kirishima mentioned.
"Good thing is that we can't get out the door to explain this!" Sero joked to the two.
Sorry this took a while. Stuff got into the way.
And Wildmutt at the end. He will come into a more important fight later like most of the aliens but for now, he just has appeared.
