Chapter 47: Missions About.
Rooting out Jedah's trap as per Morrigan's orders, Bonnie and Naruto had their hands full. It was only mid-day, and so much had happened regarding the interrogation and the new missions at hand. But in the meantime, more had to be done.
In the northeastern parts of Makai was a set of mountains. Jon was running on all fours in his Werewolf form. His claws tore through the ground as he ran, cutting right into the violet landscape. The shadows were at his back as he ran through the darkness of the mountain range, undeterred from his goal.
All around, he could see the trees that were rooted and sticking out onto the slope of the nearby mountain range up ahead, beautiful pink flowers almost in bloom and glowing as they rustled with the wind.
Morrigan's voice went through his mind once more, recalling what was said before being sent off on his mission.
"With the new information we have, you are to head northeast to the mountains and take out the target. Take her out, and we could find out where the Dohma family castle is. And make it quick; we can't have her alerting Jedah."
Of course she would do that, Jon thought as his golden gaze hardened. He went over the many strategies the Queen of Makai would employ in his head. If word even gets to Jedah's ears, he would have to change up his plans; we'd lose our element of surprise. But even if we weaken his resources, he'll likely have a backup plan.
Morrigan knew that Jedah would try to divide them, but she was a step ahead of him. The Lycanthrope could only hope that everything was coming into play as he had been thinking ahead as well, trying to piece it all together.
Almost there, sternly heeded the Werewolf. He now entered the shadows of the mountain before him, his golden eyes glowing in the darkness. On his right wrist was a blue bracelet that would magically contact the others if need be.
As he made it to the base of the mountain in front of him, he leaped and planted himself on the slope and began climbing up, never once relenting in speed. And as he got close to a nearby cliff, he could see a torii gate. And as he got to the top, he quickly looked left and right only to gaze forward. There he could see that past the gate lead into a mountain path.
Suddenly, the maniacal, haughty laughter of a deranged woman echoed throughout the mountain range. It was a chilling voice, capable of unnerving the most hardened of warriors. The Werewolf squinted as he looked about, ready to move at any moment for battle.
Looks like she's expecting company, grimly regarded Jon as with the threat nowhere around, he stood tall and walked past the gates towards the enemy's domain.
Minutes later...
The wind blew through the empty valley, the only sounds that could be heard. There was no birdsong, no plants that could rustle with the wind, nothing. It was lifeless as one walked deeper and deeper in contrary to the entrance.
Jon was now walking down the lifeless valley. And it seemed to lead to an open space up ahead. His fur flared up at the immediate battle while he flexed his fingers, his claws sharpening.
The Lycanthrope could feel something off, his instincts telling him to expect an ambush or something. Further ahead, he saw an open battleground, and they were slopes that led down the mountain to the northeastern domains of the realm.
With his gaze darting from the left to the right, Jon's muzzle pulled into a snarl. Something's wrong here; it's quiet... too quiet.
The Werewolf's gaze then shifted down to the middle of the battleground. There he saw a figure lying in the arena.
Looking over every detail, Jon began to identify the unconscious person. She was a young woman with fair skin and brown hair that was braided back. The woman wore a blue Victorian-style dress with small, puffed shoulder sleeves with a short skirt that went to the knees. She also donned a boater hat and a red ribbon tied around it, and 18-laced boots to match.
"Anita!" Jon gasped as he quickly jumped down and raced to the young woman's side. He snaked his arms underneath her place on the ground and scooped the girl up to get a good look at her. He began to shake her as he shouted. "Anita, Anita! Wake up!"
"Haaaa-ha-ha! Fool!" yelled a female voice somewhere above him.
The Werewolf growled as his head whipped up to see who was laughing at him. The enemy before Jon was a giant humanoid moth with the face and upper body of a woman. Her face was that of a plain, white geisha mask that possessed an eerie smile. She held no other human limbs while her upper body seemed to don a red kimono. What took the place of her arms and legs were the huge moth wings that bore a frightening design. Like a canvas, the wings had seething flames in their black background, while on the upper parts looked to be the skulls of demons and faces of the screaming dead.
"This is the end of the shinobi world!" the moth demon shouted as she flapped her wings.
Suddenly, the body of Anita exploded into a burst of flames, and the Werewolf brought his arms up to shield his face, smoke covering the area around him. He quickly looked up to see four fireballs sparking to life around the enemy. And with the whip of her limbs, they soared to Jon.
Jon jumped to his left and rolled as fireball after fireball flew at him, exploding behind him as he dodged. With the final one, he rolled onto his knee as he looked up, growling, "What?!"
"You fell for my decoy so easily. Oh, I could just laugh my heart out," the Hellspawn haughtily said as she looked down at the Werewolf. "I am honored. The Queen, sending one of her finest to take me out. Oh, she must be scared."
"Big talk coming from a pawn of the Dark Messiah," sneered Jon as he got on all fours and his fur spiked up. "What was the purpose in making a decoy of Anita? What's your game?"
"Oh, nothing," the moth Darkstalker drawled out as she slowly rolled her head. "But I have to say, what a lovely body she has."
Jon lurched forward, baring his teeth as he snarled, "Don't you even dare!"
"Maybe if I give Jedah-sama your head... maybe he will give me..." She shook her head excitedly as she screamed, "HER LEGS AS A REWARD!"
The moth demon threw her head back and laughed while Jon only growled. The evil alone in her voice was enough to anger him. His claws etched into the ground, ready for battle.
With Naruto and Bonnie...
The sound of gunfire, crystals shattering, and metal being chinked off and dented were the only things that could be heard by all in the area. Flashes of orange lit the clearing by the factory. Naruto and Bonnie danced around the deadly automatons, dodging gunfire. The Huitzil units surrounded them, ensuring that they couldn't escape.
The one in front of Bonnie raised its arm, took aim, and fired. Naruto ducked down as Bonnie jumped back and rolled off his backside with her arms spread, firing off bullets into the units.
Getting up and stomping on the ground, Naruto brought up a blue crystal wall behind him as they fired away, sparks flying off as the bullets chipped away at the surface. Naruto whipped around with a grunt and began to go through a set of handseals, ready to take them apart. He reared his hand back and slammed it onto the crystal.
"Crystal Style: Growing Crystal Thorns!"
Crystals shot off the walls and pierced through the automatons' chests. Electricity ran through their bodies as they tried to move.
"Objective: Eliminate intruders at all costs," mechanically said the Huitzul units in sync. They began to beep and whir for a few seconds. Then their eyes flashed from yellow to a blinking red.
They're going to explode! The Human Prince's eyes widened. He growled under his breath and raised his hands into the air.
"Crystal Style: Crimson Bearing Fruit!"
Light burst from the ground around the enemy units and surrounded them, crackling throughout the area. The light faded to reveal a blue crystal dome. Naruto then brought his hands down to cross his wrists, flexing his fingers as blue light now filled the fruit.
The twitching automatons froze in place as they were crystallized from the inside out, the light in their eyes fading as the electricity that ran through them was no more.
Meanwhile, Bonnie was handling her own automatons. She held her guns close to her sides as she grinned in delight. She spun around, her weapons pointed to both her sides as she spoke, "C'mon, I've been yearning to stretch my legs here!"
One Huitzil from behind jumped up and shifted his lower body and arms into afterburners. It shot towards the Darkhunter, closing the gap between them.
With a grin tugging at her lips, Bonnie jumped up and spun around. A purple flash surrounded her right hand, a knife summoned and gripped. She grabbed the unit by its head and stabbed the blade into its eye, catching a ride as she held on. It soon began to spin about and try to get her off to no avail. She took the knife out and began stabbing into its head over and over, sparks flying as sadistic laughter filled the air.
Bonnie pulled back and smiled evilly. She brought the knife out once more, forced it into Huitzil's neck, and dragged it across, wires severing and sparks flying like blood. She backflipped off the robot's body and onto the ground in a crouch while it flew past the cliff. The area behind her then became alit with orange as the automaton exploded.
BOOM!
She stood tall, unaffected by the scene behind her. She trekked forward with confidence in every step and her weapons in hand. She looked over the other robots in amusement as they now marched towards her.
Just like old times, Bonnie fondly thought as she saw them take to the air and circle around her like she was prey. Her shoulders relaxed while something purple flashed in her hands, Mac-10s forming as she aimed them up. She pulled the triggers and fired, bullets flying into the Huitzils and piercing through them with sharp pangs.
One broke off from the group and dived down to charge the girl. Sensing the robot coming up from behind, Bonnie jumped sideways into the air and took aim. With her guns glowing a blood-red, she pulled the trigger. A line of bullets pierced through its armor, splitting it in half as it flew off towards the factory.
Bonnie landed into a crouch, apathetically looking to the ground while enemies swarmed her. She quickly stood, rolling her head to crack her neck, and then stared forward. Is this all blood-boy's got nowadays? It's kind of disappointing that he needs humans and robots to do his dirty work. Oh well, more fun for me. I wonder how the others are doing...
Back with Jon...
Flare after flare of orange lit the mountain range in a deadly glow, the sound of fire and whistling bombs roaring into the night.
Jon was now running on the slanted walls of the valley, outrunning each blazing orb that flew after him. He could feel the intense heat wrap around his body as it soaked into his fur. The haughty laugh of the demon sounded among the explosions of fire. And throughout it all, the demoness remained in the same place in mid-air, keeping Jon at bay and on guard.
"Haaaa, Haaaa, Haaaaaa! You can't run forever, Talbain!" the moth demon exclaimed.
She brought her wings back and flapped forward as they glowed. Another fireball formed. With another flick of the wings, she sent it to the Werewolf at a blinding speed.
Jon rolled his eyes at the demon's arrogance. He glanced at her from the corner of his left eye, the fireball hot on his tail as it grew bigger and bigger with each step he took. Jedah practically chose a pawn to throw to the wolves. She's delusional if she thinks she can kill me that easily.
The Lycanthrope lurched his lower body, his claws tearing through the ground. He whipped back to the massive fireball, a cold gaze in his eyes. He widened his stance as he reared his right arm back, his palms now glowing blue. He sent his palm forward, liquid meeting flame as an explosion filled the area.
BOOM!
Smoke and shockwaves spread throughout the valley. The grey embrace of smog covered all that could be seen, and the arena only seemed to disappear under all of it. And after all that was done, there was nothing but a void of silence filling the area.
The Hellspawn watched the smoke clear from the slope the Werewolf once was. And after a few seconds, she threw her head back and burst out laughing, "Haaaa-haha! I told that him that this was the end of the shinobi world, and not once did he ever heed my—"
A blue blur cut her off as it came to her level. Jon had his right hand on her shoulder and the other drawn back and aimed at her heart.
The demon gasped as she screamed, "NO—!"
He punched through her chest. And with the jerk of his wrist, he ripped out his hand and he jumped down to the arena floor. Flipping through the air, Jon landed on all fours with his left arm drenched in blood.
The Hellspawn's body floated down to the ground, her back meeting the floor. Groans emanated from her dying body as blood pooled around her. "I... Benisuzume... fell that easily?"
"Tch," the Lycanthrope scoffed as he stood up and walked over to the demon. He lashed his his stained left arm to his side, blood whipping off of it. His gaze was as cold as ice as he sneered, "It looks like Jedah was just using you. After all that talk, all it amounted to was nothing."
It was common knowledge that the denizens of Makai had naturally strong bodies and lifeforces. This aided in longevity in the face of death. So even with a hole in the demoness's chest, she could still survive long enough to get aid in time. But since there was no one but Jon around, it didn't seem like backup was to come. And that gave the Werewolf enough time to interrogate her for information.
Benisuzume lifted her head. Her smiling mask only seemed to contain the hatred that dwelled within. "You think... this is the last of me? My purpose is already fulfilled for Jedah-sama. It'll be years, but I'll come back sooner or later."
"I'm aware. I'm just thinning Jedah's herd." Jon crossed his arms, glaring coldly into her mask. "Jedah ordered you to make a decoy of Anita to lure me in?"
"Hehe..." Benisuzume leaned back onto the ground. She coughed up blood, which dripped down the sides of her mask, her voice quiet yet firm. "My orders were to give you the message before you killed me... and you have received it."
"What message?"
"That's up to you to figure out, wolf. But... take it as you wish. For all you know, she could be on our side, or she could be yearning to revive the monk that had fallen by her hand... Maybe she yearns to end the world that brought her so much pain."
Lurching his head, Jon bared his teeth and snarled. Impossible! Anita would never do such a thing. As a monk, Donovan taught her the value of life.
The ever-smiling moth demon only let out a small chuckle. "That's right, Talbain. Let the fear of what's to come consume you."
"Hmph, as if I have the time," retorted the Werewolf as he turned his back and cast a side glance with disgust in his golden eyes. "Jedah will fall. And he will no longer torture the human world."
With her breath coming to a hitch, the life slowly left the moth Hellspawn, her orders fulfilled. She looked to the eternal night sky, looking over all the stars. The Lycanthrope began to walk away, becoming smaller in the demoness's vision.
With the last of her strength, she gathered demonic energy into her being, her body beginning to glow a blood red. The area around her seemed to shake, and the pressure could be felt from meters away.
Jon turned around, bewildered as he heard her utter her final words to him.
"My parting gift to you, Talbain..."
As the energy built, her body fell limp as she began to levitate into the air.
Jon's gaze became one of astonishment as he took a step back. He whipped around, a blue aura of Ki surrounding his body. He made a run for the cliff, not once looking back.
The red-adorned Darkstalker came to a stop in mid-air. Blue fire then burst from her chest and enveloped her body. It grew to swallow the area, racing to the escaping Werewolf and incinerating all in its path.
Jon was a blur to the eye as he reached the cliff, the light hot on his heels. He made it to the edge and pushed off, the ground shattering below as he flickered away.
Somewhere near the Kingdom... near the eastern forest...
Jon reappeared in a flicker as he landed on all fours, the ground shattering beneath him as his claws tore into the ground. The Lycanthrope scoffed as he stood and growled as he looked back to the mountain that was far off.
The mountain range exploded in a fiery flash, a dust cloud making its way down the mountain while massive rocks began to fly everywhere in its vicinity. An ear-splitting explosion soon began to rumble through the ground like thunder after lightning. On instinct, Jon's ears flattened to his skull while his eyes widened in astonishment.
BOOOOOOOOOM!
The ear-splitting explosion was so loud that it could be heard by all of that lived in the city of Makai. The wind picked up as the shockwave was felt from where Jon was standing.
She... She blew herself up just for what? Jon pondered as the sound of the explosion faded. He crossed his arms as he saw the fires of the mountain dissipate into nothing but smoke. Was it to get some sort of signal out?
The moth demon's voice echoed in his mind as he tried to make sense of what happened. He shifted his gaze down to the purple soil and reflected on those very words.
"My purpose is already fulfilled for Jedah-sama."
Jedah must have anticipated Morrigan's ability to gather information. So he must had deliberately fed information to his other followers, knowing that in the chance that they were captured, they would lead us on a wild goose chase.
Amid his thoughts, his bracelet began to glow white. Taking notice, he brought it up as a circular screen popped to life. Color began to fill the screen as it became clearer and clearer. The concerned face of Morrigan came into view.
"Jon..." Morrigan began in an irritated tone with her arms crossed. "I'm guessing that shockwave was of your doing?"
"The enemy exploded as a possible signal to Jedah; she knew she would be killed," the Werewolf answered with a nod. "The information you extracted out of his follower seemed to be deliberate. He'll know our next move."
"You don't think I know that? My goal is to be three steps ahead of the curb here."
"So what next, Aensland? If Jedah is expecting our next move, then we could be playing into his hands."
"Then we think ahead. Jedah's tactics have changed with time; he's cunning. If he expects us to play into his hands, we think ahead and outwit him, lure him into a false sense of security. And when the moment is right, we shatter him like glass. That Darkstalker was just the first to come."
"That's not all, Morrigan." Jon's gaze became grave as he clenched his free hand. "That demon made an illusion of Anita."
A few moments passed as bewilderment enveloped the Queen of Makai, her eyes wide as she leaned back on her throne. "Head back to the castle. We'll talk about this when you and the others get here."
"Got it. But what about Naruto and Bonnie?" asked Jon as he began to walk into the forest.
"As per my orders, they set off Jedah's trap. We should be hearing back from them soon." The screen faded as Morrigan ended communications.
Jon jumped forward and began running back to the castle. Wind coursed through his fur while his thoughts ran elsewhere.
He's expecting us. But not only that, he's trying to trip us up, Jon mentally concluded as he scowled, picking up the pace. It's all just some game, and we're the chess pieces. Morrigan, let's hope that Anita hasn't turned. We don't need another enemy against us.
With Naruto and Bonnie...
The battle against the Huitzils was now reaching its climax. Both the Darkhunter and Human Prince were now facing the group of Huitzils together. Both humans widened their stances, Bonnie having her guns ready with a smile while Naruto was growling like a small beast.
"Bonnie, stay close!" Naruto ordered and quickly got in front of the Darkhunter. He raised his left hand and bit down on his thumb to draw blood, bringing up the other as he whipped through handseals. This ends now!
He then crouched and slammed his hand onto the ground.
"Summoning: Sanpā!"
Black markings appeared under his palm as smoke exploded from the ground and filled the area. The Huitzil units stepped back to analyze the anomaly.
A gust of wind blew the smoke away, revealing a massive armored Jackrabbit growling at them with enough force to shake the earth. He looked down at the units, ready for his Prince's orders.
"Burn them down, Sanpā!" Naruto commanded from atop the giant's head.
The giant rabbit threw his head back and breathed in before lurching down, blue flames churning in his maw.
"Fire Style: Searing Migraine!"
The armored rabbit blew out a blue firestorm that bore through the earth as it ravaged the Huitzils, the roar of the flames almost deafening. The machines couldn't move as the flames burned away at their bodies.
"Turn it up, burn them to ash!" Naruto cried as the automatons tried to resist.
Sanpā's eyes then flashed red as the searing storm became a jet of flames that destroyed everything in its path. Not more than a minute passed and the flames were constant. Stopping the jutsu and closing his maw, the giant rabbit ceased his fire as smoke enveloped the area. And when it all cleared, all that was left was nothing but the black, charred bodies of the automatons. Sanpā stepped back, his eyes returning to their normal brown shade.
"Well, that nice play date," sarcastically spoke Bonnie with a cheeky grin as the giant rabbit began to lower his head. She got up from behind the boy and jumped off, looking back to the two. "So you can summon ninja monster rabbits?"
Naruto just ignored her question and got off the giant to look back up to the Jackrabbit. He gave the summon a warm smile as his thoughts of home flooded his mind. Sanpā...
The Darkhunter just rolled her eyes as she suddenly turned around, uncaring of the Human Prince's answer, and walked over to the death machines. Bonnie almost cringed at the scent of burnt dirt while the sound of sizzling filled her ears.
Bonnie squinted her eyes as she stepped forward, intrigued. The kid's pet managed to do all this?
Meanwhile, Sanpā had joy in his eyes as he thumped his foot against the ground, shaking the area as he shrank down to the size of a horse. He jumped and tackled the boy to the ground, snuggling his head on Naruto's, closing his eyes. "My Prince, it's been so long!"
"It's been too long, Sanpā!" Naruto grabbed the giant's head and pulled him in close to bump their noses together. "I missed you so much."
"You took the words right out of my mouth, little one."
For so long, Naruto had barely contacted home. But the rabbit summons loved him and always wanted to be in contact with them. Both rabbit and human began to purr in sync as they closed their eyes, embracing every moment that passed. Tension began to leave Naruto's body as his shoulders he was finally with a member of the summons, his family.
"El-ahrairah, my boy," Sanpā began as he separated, both he and Naruto opening their eyes to look at each other. "Where are we." He then shifted his head up to the Darkhunter. "And who's that girl you're with?"
Naruto stood tall as he tried to look Sanpā in the eyes. He raised a hand to scratch the back of his head "...It's a long story."
And... we're done. Just a warning, there is a lot we have to go through before Jon and Naruto return to the village. And I plan on bringing it out the best I can.
The monster, Benisuzume was one from an old game I played. One of my favorites from long ago.
