Prologue
"I really don't understand why you keep it hidden."
The gentle, carefree voice from her right side made the raven-haired teenager come to a brief halt in her trek. It was early in the evening hours, the sun just barely beginning to set in the distance, as they walked and roamed around the garden they often tended to in the front portion of the yard. She remained quiet for a few seconds, a mild smile on her face as the younger girl beside her crouched to pluck a stray yellow-petaled flower that grew close to the sidewalk they stood on. It wasn't part of their vibrant garden. Without waiting, she wove it into the wreath she was working on, threading the stem in along with the rest with a happy hum coming from her lips. A second later, she looked up, brown eyes meeting cerulean, and she smiled, offering both arms out with the tiny wreath held firmly.
It wasn't large enough to be a crown or a necklace of any sort, and Kagome knew its purpose the moment she glanced at it. Her smile grew a fraction, and she pushed up her baggy sleeve to reveal the metallic limb that had been hidden below. Majority of her hand was covered by the archer's gloves she wore, the dark sapphire material covering all but one or two of her fingers and her thumb. The silvery metal was inconspicuous against the material of her glove, and it looked to be a part of the glove from most angles.
Kagome offered the arm to the younger girl, who beamed brightly up at her and hopped another step or two closer to her. Without waiting, she reached and carefully worked the tiny wreath of flowers over her hand so it could be situated around her wrist, much like a bracelet.
"I think it's neat," Rin continued with a smile fixed on her face, her gaze watching her metal arm. "It doesn't change you in anyway, either, Nee-chan."
Kagome smiled and glanced down at her arm before letting her sleeve slowly slip back down. The billowing material fell back into place, and Kagome glanced at her other hand, which cradled a basket of herbs they'd picked from their garden moments ago. "I know," she said, her tone soft. "I just…"
She didn't exactly enjoy the stares she received. She could tell what people were thinking whenever they managed to catch sight of her metallic limb. They wanted to know what happened, but most were hesitant to ask out of worry they might offend. Truthfully, she didn't even know a lie she could tell to cover up the truth as to how it'd happened. After all, it'd happened while she was time-hopping. Things like that weren't easy to explain.
Naraku's poison was to blame. He had injured her during a fight after cornering her on her own, piercing her arm with a tentacle. The bone had been broken from the strike, but that was the least worrisome problem. Along with the hit, such a potent poison had been plunged into her bloodstream. To prevent its spread, a decision was made. Sure, it had been rash, but desperate situations often call for desperate solutions. Her body had been able to take care of the rest of the poison that remained behind.
Most importantly, she'd lived, and Naraku hadn't.
She'd been found by her friends and they managed to finish him off before he could do anything else. The jewel was able to be put back together, and that part of her life was finally able to close. The chapter could end.
She returned home once her injuries had been healed up. Kaede wanted to be sure the poison was fully purified from her body, and she did all she could to help her heal and recover as normally as possible.
An empty shrine greeted her, but she knew what to expect when she went home for good. Her family had died in the prior months due to a bad car accident. She'd been in the past when it happened, so she found out weeks after it actually occurred. The shrine had been left in her name, but, upon coming back, she wasn't sure if she wanted to take over the mantle there. There were too many memories that hung over her shoulders like a black cloud. There was too much regret and lost time.
The morning after, a familiar silver-haired demon showed up at the shrine, much to her surprise. Sesshoumaru had blended his pack into their own during the final stretch of her time spent in the feudal era, so it wasn't so odd to see him, but for it to be so soon still stunned her. It was like he timed it all, and knowing him- the being of perfection that he was, he probably did.
That was how she went on to receive her prosthetic arm.
Sesshoumaru had once been in a similar boat as her, and perhaps he sympathized with her in his own strange way. He had been able to regain his arm, and he knew she wasn't likely to be as lucky. She was capable of healing fatal injuries in a matter of seconds, but restoring a missing limb in any capacity was too much for her body. It was kinda ironic, to her, at least
The cold, aloof demon took her in and claimed her as a member of his pack, much to her surprise. Sure, near the end, all the differences had been able to be put aside for the greater good, but they'd never been what could be called friends throughout it all. Yet… five hundred years had gone by for him. He seemed the same, yet still so different.
It was nice, in its own special way.
She'd told him how she didn't want to remain at the shrine, and that was all he needed to hear to make his decision and make the offer to her. She'd accepted without putting a lot of thought into it. After all, she trusted him enough to fight alongside. She trusted him with her life, and, deep down, she even dared to think he held her in the same regard.
He went about the route of getting her the new arm she had. It was similar to her other one, with exact proportions. The initial process had been painful, but nothing worse than anything she'd endured before.
The metal even had a nice, sapphire blue tint to it that was similar to her eyes.
In having it made, he'd kept her in mind, and she was grateful for that. He listened to her thoughts and opinions, and he heard what she had to say about it. She felt as if he truly wanted to make her feel as good and as happy as he could with such an injury.
Even if she was content with it, she wasn't fond of the memories the thought of it brought. She didn't like remembering the fear she felt when Naraku had gotten her on her own. Whenever she thought about it, she could feel such a deep sense of dread fall to rest inside her chest. It was a crushing weight she couldn't ignore.
She wouldn't have been strong enough to fight her way out on her own. If anything had gone a different route, then she knew it was very possible that she wouldn't even be here now.
Kagome shook her head and reached to take Rin by her hand, to which she happily gripped Kagome's hand in response.
Despite the younger girl's human appearance, she was far from it. She didn't know much as to why Sesshoumaru had turned her into a demon, but she knew it had to do with her nearly dying. A last resort to save her, turning into a demon with his blood. She was older than she'd been all those years ago, but not by much. She was about eleven in appearance, and her true form was hidden by illusory magic.
"We should get inside now," Kagome said, pushing back Rin's prior questions with a smile. "I gotta get started on this medicine if I wanna get some of it made before tomorrow."
Tomorrow marked the start to another week- more importantly, another school week. She was already running a bit behind with her medicine making, and she needed to be sure her stock didn't run empty.
"I'll sit and watch a movie with you while I work on it," she suggested, and Rin lit up at the promise, and she nodded eagerly.
"Can I choose the movie?" she asked, and Kagome laughed as she nodded.
"Of course."
Rin cheerfully led the way back to the spacious home they lived in alongside the ancient dog demon. An odd family, surely, but they were a family all the same.
Auroua-chan: I'm really excited to get this one posted.
Eventually, a little down the road in this story, Kagome and Bucky will have a very strong sibling vibe. Kagome's gonna be attending the same school as Peter and Sesshoumaru is a teacher there. The others there know and regard them as siblings.
Kagome will be skilled in multiple weapons, as well as hand-to-hand combat.
Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
