Prologue
The silence continued to get even more and more unbearable as she sat there, on her knees looking up into his crimson stare. The air of intrigue and fascination surrounded him, and that only caused her unease to continue to multiply. She tightened her hands into tight fists, and she downcast her gaze to them as her fingers burrowed into her black hakamas.
"I-I'm in hell…?" Kagome barely recognized her own voice as she spoke, repeating the words he'd said minutes upon minutes ago. The disbelief that laced her words nearly stung her. She didn't understand. She knew death at the hands of Naraku was a possibility for her when the final battle for the jewel finally rolled around, but she'd ended up here out of every possible place? Blue eyes swapped focus to her hands, her human hands, and her frown deepened.
She was still human. Not a thing about her had changed despite her fall from grace. Her eyes narrowed when a pink sparkle invaded her line of sight, and she didn't hesitate to snatch the innocently gleaming bauble from around her neck. This- all of it- had to be by the jewel's fault, she knew that much. She was positive all of this was connected to the jewel's cursed presence.
"Indeed you are, you little Doe!" the demon standing over her chirped in response. His voice sounded odd to her, some sort of static interference seemingly tethered to it and distorting nearly every word he said. "But if this isn't quite the breathtaking sight!"
Kagome glanced up at him, eyes narrowed.
"Still human and still possessing those vile holy powers of yours," he clicked his tongue before laughing. "Positively de-lightful!"
"You're really starting to tick me off," Kagome growled as she stood up. The floofy ears atop his head twitched some as he darted back a pace or two when she turned her full focus to him, an ever-present, toothy grin on his face. His teeth appeared to be razor sharp, monstrous and gleaming dazzlingly all the same. "Who even are you?" she asked, her question demanding as she folded her arms over her chest. As she did, a sharp gasp of pain tore free from her abruptly, and, for a moment, a flash of a memory shot through her head.
Crimson eyes loomed down at her. Time seemed to come to a halt entirely. A vile grin had taken over his usual look of contempt. Pain blossomed through her chest as the beige tentacle that had been plunged directly into the center of her chest was abruptly ripped free, leaving a gaping hole in its wake.
As the colors of the world around her began to fade, black embers steadily creeping in and taking her vision captive, a glimmer of pink burst to life like a massive explosion of hue. As it faded it took everything along with it.
Darkness fell over her, cold and alone as she sank to the bottom of the abyss that had enveloped her in the cruelest of hugs.
When she checked for any sign of a remaining wound, all she found in that place was a jagged, angry scar. She could feel the lingering gaze of the demon standing opposite of her as she fixed her haori back into place, letting her fingers graze over the area in a phantom-light touch. A second later, she rested a hand on her hip and returned a pointed glare back to the demon watching her with rapt fascination.
"Answer my question before I turn you to dust," she snapped.
Her threat made his smile grow wider- if that was even possible, and he actually laughed.
"Ahaha!"
The sound made her bristle as he continued to laugh, the radio static crackling as his laugh grew louder. A second or two later it abruptly stopped and he offered her a look she could only equate to soft chiding.
"What positively ruthless energy!" he chirped, much to her obvious ire. "The name's Alastor, my dear Doe." He clicked his tongue and approached her, making it very apparent that he didn't fear her little threat, not even in the slightest. Kagome narrowed her eyes as he leaned down to be on her level. She realized he was a lot taller than she'd previously acknowledged, now that he was inches away from her. Still, she stood her ground and kept a brave front up. He hummed, and she was taken aback when one of his clawed hands grazed her face. His thumb rested at the corner of her mouth as he pulled at her cheek some. "Come on, let's see a smile, Darling! You're never fully dressed without one, after all!"
Kagome slapped his hand away from her face, tightening her hands back into fists when he laughed at her action. "What's your problem?!" she snapped at him, only to growl and lift both hands up to bury her fingers into her hair a second later as she heaved a massive groan. "What the hell is happening right now?!" she cried.
Why was she here? What had she done to deserve this sort of fate?
"I did everything I was supposed to do!" she wailed a second later. Tears brimmed in her eyes, trailing down her cheeks in messy streams once they overflowed as she choked out a sob. "I followed like I was supposed to, I did what fate entrusted to me. I… I-!" She felt the gravity of the situation settle on her shoulders as if it was a coat fashioned entirely out of lead. Her expression softened, a lost feeling coursing through her entire being. "I… I don't understand," she whispered quietly. She'd been led to believe that, should her death come during the fight for the jewel, then her soul would be absorbed into the pink bauble. Why hadn't that happened?
Had Naraku somehow been able to make a wish on the jewel to change her destiny to something far worse? Given the jewel's track record, she wouldn't put it past it to grant whatever fate-defying wish Naraku could've possibly thought up in her final moments.
But…
Kagome glanced at her hands, turning away from them a second later.
That had to have been the case. Otherwise, there was absolutely no chance her humanity would have remained intact.
A hand falling to rest on her shoulder stole her attention, and she slowly shifted her gaze upwards, unamused blue eyes landing on the demon still seemingly so enraptured by her presence. "What's your deal- Alastor, was it?" she asked. "If I still have my sacred abilities then you should do your best to steer clear of me."
"Right you are, Darling!" he responded with the normal cheery tone she steadily found herself getting used to. "However, I find this chance just too… enticing to pass up!"
"... What?" Kagome arched a brow, confusion taking over her anger for a moment. She tilted her head to the side, only to yelp under her breath when she was abruptly yanked into his side, his arm resting bravely over her shoulders.
"Ohoho!" Alastor purred, feeling the heat behind the seething glare that reclaimed her expression in a single heartbeat. "Why, having a being such as yourself right here under my wing, of course!" He wasn't fazed in the slightest when her holy energy began to sear at his skin, and his grin widened when he could smell the brief trace of fear that was suddenly coaxed out. "You and I would surely make one hell of a team, Darling!"
"Not interested," she responded curtly. She didn't know what he was after, but she wasn't willing to be any sort of partner or ally to this demon. She knew she differed from other Mikos, regarding demons as allies and even friends despite the soul-bound enemies they were destined to be, but she were in hell right now. These sorts of demons were a complete one-eighty compared to her friends living in the human realm. "I'm gonna figure out how to get back to where I belong- I don't have time for your antics."
"Hmm…" Alastor purred in thought at her response, glancing down at her with intrigued eyes. "Very well! I shall lend you a hand, then!"
She narrowed her eyes. "I can't trust you," she said decisively. "Why would you help me? There's nothing in it for you."
Alastor didn't argue her claim, but his words didn't appease her any. "Why, I have no ulterior motive if that's what you're assuming of me," he said. "I'm quite bored, and helping you in your goal will surely offer me countless hours of priceless amusement, my sweet little Doe!" He chuckled darkly a second later, and she felt hesitation brimming inside her. "While we're at it, why don't you and I see what we can awaken inside of you while working alongside each other?" he offered.
She knew his words carried more weight than he'd spoken with. "Try all you want, but you're never going to change or corrupt me," she growled out.
Alastor met her gaze with an ominous smile. "Change? Oh, no, no!" He laughed and leaned in closer to her, trapping her in a chilling stare. "I only desire to set you free."
"Set me free…?" she repeated his claim, but that sting of hesitation didn't fade. "I'm already free," she said, rejecting his claim altogether. She turned away from him with a huff, her nose pointed slightly into the air. "It's all the same," she said, "try all you like, but you have nothing to free me from."
"Shall we see?" he asked, offering her a hand. She looked down at his outstretched appendage for a second or two before looking back up at his face. His smile was back to the usual one, a borderline friendly light gleaming in his crimson gaze. She swallowed her hesitation down despite the unfading feeling that she should actually listen to it, and she rested her smaller hand in his own.
As he closed his fingers around her hand, he tugged her forward and laughed.
"Delightful, Darling!" Alastor boasted. A second later he slung his arm back over her shoulder and he tugged her back into his chest as if he owned her. His claws sank into her skin, keeping her firmly where she was as he started to walk away with her forcefully dragged along. "Now!' he exclaimed, "let's get to work on getting a lovely smile right on your face, shall we?"
As they walked away, Kagome glanced up from under her bangs, tuning him out as he started to ramble. His voice faded into the background static that was tethered closely to each and every word he uttered.
What did she just get herself into?"
