Chap 2

"Any idea on what type of cadet you might get, Jaune?" K asked as we made it to the gym.

"Knowing my luck, I could get either get someone who is hesitant and unsure of what they are doing or someone that is very by the book." I answered.

"Heh, does any agent even follow the book anymore. Aside from the basics?" J asked as he grabbed some twenty-pound weights from the racks.

"Only rooks use the book. Speaking of which, we should get Zed to update it since it has been roughly two decades since its last revision" K said as he put weight on the bench press.

"At this point, we should toss out the book and make a new one dedicated to teaching cadets the basics. Otherwise, we would need to revise the book every few weeks." I added as I got on the treadmill and turned it on.

For the next hour and a half, we remained in the gym working out in comfortable silence, occasionally switching machines or spotting each other as they lifted weights. Even though MiB only requires its agents to work out at the headquarters gym a minimum of three hours per week, most agents would come here when they have time. This is because the workout becomes therapeutic after a while and a great stress reliever. However, I couldn't entirely focus on my workout as my mind kept drifting back to the possible cadet I would be getting assigned. Unfortunately, though, that isn't the only question on my mind as I also wondered how I'm going to balance work, the cadet, and Beacon at the same time.

'I could pull up the papers to request permission to leave Beacon. The only problem would be my teammates and friends.' I thought as I turned off the treadmill. 'They would most definitely not allow me to leave and would no doubt follow me. Although, a simple mindwipe would solve that.'

"Hey, Jaune." J shouted, getting my attention.

"Yeah." I said, turning to him.

"It's time to go on patrol." K answered.

"All right. Let's go then." I said as I grabbed a towel to wipe off some of the sweat, I accumulated from my workout.

Exiting the gym, we made our way to the elevator and pressed the garage floor button. After a few seconds, the elevator doors closed before bringing us to the correct floor. J then took out his keys and pressed the red button, which caused his car to turn on before making its way towards us. Getting in the car, we drove out of the garage and onto the streets.

"Where to first?" I asked.

"First, we need to head to Mr. Wu's place. See if the new owner is following health guidelines. Next, we have to head to the statue that is in the center of Vale. Make sure the agents are correctly setting up the neuralyzer. Then, go back into town and check on Jeffery Price. See if he is still following his probation orders. Finally, get some pie." K answered.

"Please tell me you're not going to spend ten minutes looking at the menu and ask about the specials twice again." J asked with a smirk. All he got in response was K giving a light chuckle.

Forty Minutes Later

"Alright. Mr. Wu's place." J said as he parked the car in front of the restaurant.

"Honestly, it should be renamed, considering Mr. Wu no longer the owner since Borris killed him and his children sold the place." I said as I exited the car.

"Yes. But that would involve a lot of paperwork. Add to the fact that the people around here have come to love it as Wu's place, which would mean we have to neuralyze all of them." K explained.

"Which would be a gigantic pain in the ass." J added as we entered the restaurant. Looking around, we saw that, at first glance, everything seemed to be in order. However, it becomes pretty clear to any agent, regardless of experience, that very rarely is how it initially looks.

"Ah, Jaune, K, J. Welcome back to Wu's restaurant." The owner greeted us as he came up to us. The owner, whose nickname is Dolion as his real name is too hard to pronounce, is a member of the same species that Jeebs is. "What is the reason for your visit?"

"Hello, Dolion. Here to give the restaurant a quick inspection." I answered. Without missing a beat, Dolion began to sweat profusely.

"Are you sure you have the correct time? I thought I called to reschedule it." He stuttered out.

"Why do you lie to us, Dolion? Like Jeebs, we hate it when you lie." K asked.

"Come on, guys. I'm doing my best and still trying to figure out all this Remnant paperwork." He pathetically lied.

"Dolion. We all know that is a lie. Besides, if you did have trouble, we already gave you a number to call for assistance with anything you are having trouble with, no matter how trivial it is." I reminded him. Hearing this, Dolion sagged his shoulders in defeat.

"Why do you guys have to bust my balls?" He asked.

"If you didn't lie and simply do what we say, this wouldn't be happening." J countered.

"Now show us the back." K demanded.

"Fine. Follow me." Dolion said in defeat before bringing us to the kitchen. Upon entering, we saw several health violations. Although, to our surprise, none of the violations concerned the safety of the people of Remnant.

"Well, this is a pleasant surprise. Less than I was expecting, but we're still going to have to write you up, Dolion." K said after looking around the kitchen.

"Can you tell me what the violations are?" He asked.

"Of course. The violations are mainly improper storage or handling of alien food. How you have it here can quickly cause the food to spoil or contaminate other food. But since you asked so nicely, and you're still relatively new to operating this restaurant, we'll only give you a warning." K answered, smiling.

"Oh, thank you, Agent K." Dolion said in relief.

"Dolion. You don't need to say Agent with our names. Now, we'll have some helpers come by tomorrow to help you fix these violations. Just remember, if you need help, call us, and we'll give you the assistance you need." J told him.

"Right, thanks again. Oh, before you leave, would you all like something to eat?" He asked.

"We're not hungry right now." I answered.

"Take care, Dolion." J said as we exited the kitchen before heading back to the car.

"That went better than expected" I said as we got into the car.

"Now, if only everything went as smooth as this. We would be golden." J added as he started up the car.

"Unfortunately, that's not the case. Now off to visit Jeffery." K said as he buckled in.

"I thought we were going to the statue?" I asked, confused.

"Yeah, but we're already close to his place. We might as well go to him first." K explained.

"All right, off to his store then." J said as he pulled back onto the road.

Ten Minutes Later

"Damn Vale traffic." I said, annoyed as J parked the car. Unfortunately, we could not find a parking spot near the store and had to park five blocks away.

"Something even the most advanced civilizations can't escape." J added as he locked the car before we started making our way to the store.

"At the very least, rush hour just ended, so it should lighten up." K said as he checked the time on his watch.

'Should being the keyword.' I thought as we reached the store that Jeffery Price manages. Opening the door, we entered the store and saw Jeffery sitting behind the counter watching the news. Hearing the bell chime, he turned around and smiled when he saw us.

"K, J, Jaune. You're back." He said while standing up. "Is it time for the inspection already?"

"Calm down. We're here to see if you've been following the probation. Now the records." J ordered.

"Sure. Got the records right here." Jeffery said before turning around and grabbing a rather sizable folder. "Here it is. Hopefully, everything is in order."

"We'll be the judge of that." K said as he took the file and began to look it over.

"Take your time." Jeffery told K before turning to us. "While he looks it over, would either of you be interested in anything else?"

"No, I'm fine." J answered

"I need some batteries. Running low on them." I answered.

"Perfect. What kind do you need?" Jeffery asked.

"Double-A, Triple-A, and D-batteries." I answered.

"I got you." He said before moving over to another part of the store. "Rechargeable, or no?"

"Rechargeable." I answered. He nodded before grabbing a few packs.

"Alright. Let me rings these up for you." He said as he came back. "That will be twenty-two lien."

"Here you go." I said as I handed him the correct amount. He smiled before taking the lien and placing it in the register while giving me the batteries.

"No, problem Jaune." He said, smiling.

"All right. Everything appears to be in order. Take care." K said as he closed the folder before giving it back to Jeffery.

"Take care, guys." He said before sitting down and returning to his show.

"Well, that was something." J said as we exited the store.

"Least, we didn't need to write him up. Which is good." K added.

"If he keeps this up, we could end his probation early." I said as we began to make our way back to the car. Only to stop when I hear a familiar voice call out to me.

"Jaune?" The voice asked, shocked. Turning around, we saw that the voice belonged to Yang Xiao Long.

'Great.' I thought, annoyed, before putting on a fake smile. "Hey, Yang. What's up?"

"Don't 'what's up' me Arc. Do you know how worried we have been since you disappeared without reason? Not to mention when you finally answered our messages, you only gave a weak and vague answer." Yang asked with her eyes turning red.

"Sorry, but I had some personal things I had to do." I explained.

"Doesn't matter. You could have at least said something." She countered as her hair caught on fire.

"You're right. I'm sorry. I won't let it happen again. I'll do anything to make it up to you guys." I told her while secretly motioning for K and J to put on their glasses.

"All right. I guess I can forgive you this time. But the others won't be so happy." She said, smiling as her eyes and hair returned to normal. However, she then smirked as she looked me up and down.

'Here comes the teasing.' I thought, mentally preparing myself.

"You know Jaune. In that outfit, you could catch the eyes of any girl you meet. Even me." Yang teased while adding a purr at the end.

"Shameless flirt." J whispered to me which I nodded.

"Well, we better get going, Jaune. But before we go, I need to know who these two guys are?" She asked while pointing to J and K.

"Of course. But first. Let me show you a magic trick I've been working on." I told her.

"Not a big fan of magic, but okay." She said, smirking. "What do I have to do?"

"All you have to do is stare at this and wait for the flash." I answered as I put on my glasses and took out the neuralyzer.

"Um, what is that?" She asked, curious.

"Something that saved my ass on many occasions." I answered as I pressed the button, which caused a bright flash to come from the neuralyzer. The flash temporarily stunning her, which allowed me to step behind J and K so they could cover me and give Yang her new memories.

"Can you tell us what he looks like?" J asked, snapping Yang out of her trance.

"What?" She asked, confused.

"About the boy you were looking for, this Jaune kid." K answered while taking out a notepad.

"Oh, right." Yang said, blinking a few times. "Um, he is blond like me. Blue eyes, almost noodle-like but also very nice."

"Are you sure 'friend' is the right term? It sounds to me like you might have a crush on him." J asked, causing Yang to roll her eyes.

"As if. No, Jaune is just a good friend. Honestly, I see him more like a brother that I never had and always wanted to tease." She answered.

"Well, we'll let you know if we see him." K told her as he put away the notepad.

"Thanks. Just let him know Yang sent you guys." She said before turning around and leaving. We waited until she was out of sight before moving from our spots.

"Not the brightest, is she?" J asked.

"No. Yang tends to think more with her fist than her head. Though, she is a good friend and nice person to be around." I answered as we began to make our way back to the car.

"How many times have you neuralyzed her?" K asked.

"This month. About ten times. Yang is the second most gossip-driven girl in Beacon." I answered.

"Damn. That's annoying." J commented as we reached the car and got in.

"Well, now that we finished with Jeffery, all that's left to do is check on the statue." K said as J started the car.

Two Hours Later

'Well, that was overly complicated. At least we get to go and have pie right now. Coffee sounds great as well.' I thought as we got back into the car.

After a long drive from Jeffery's store, we finally made it to the center of Vale, where the statute was. Unfortunately, whatever could go wrong did go wrong. Many parts were missing or unaccounted for, parts of the statue needed replacing, and Lisa Lavender kept trying to sneak in to report what was going on. Naturally, we neuralyzed her and gave her a new fake memory. However, despite having her mind wiped, she kept coming back to the site, eventually forcing us to wipe her mind again after two agents walked her far off-site. Yet, that was not the worst of our problems as police and Glynda Goodwitch came looking for me. At the very least, though, we only needed to mindwipe them once for them to leave us alone.

"That was a headache." J said, annoyed as he started up the car.

"Don't worry. The pie will help." K reminded us.

"Coffee will help as well." I added as J pulled back onto the road.

Half an Hour Later

"What are your specials again?" K asked while looking through the menu.

"Our associate will have the same thing he always has after looking at the menu for ten minutes before asking about the specials twice." J said as he took the menu from K.

"He will have an apple pie with a nasty slice of cheddar." I told the waiter before giving my order. "I'll have a blueberry pie with extra cinnamon."

"And I'll have a strawberry rhubarb." J told the waiter.

"Okay. And drinks?" She asked.

"Coffee with extra sugar and cream." We answered at the same time.

"Coming right up." She said before going to give our order to the chefs.

"After a long day. This place is heaven." I said, leaning back in my chair.

"Nothing else like it." J agreed.

"Planning on bringing your cadet here after their first day on the job?" K asked.

"Of course." I answered. At that moment, the waiter returned with our food and drinks.

"Enjoy." She said, smiling before winking at me and leaving.

I just rolled my eyes before grabbing my fork. However, before we could dig in, we felt our scrolls vibrate. Taking them out, we saw that Zed had requested us to return to MiB headquarters after we finished whatever we currently are doing. Yet, despite this, we still took our time eating as we needed this moment of relaxation.

Fifty Minutes Later

"Okay, Zed. What you have for us?" I asked as we arrived at his office and sat down across from him.

"The new cadets arrived. And I'm assigning two cadets to you, Jaune." He answered. This caught me off guard as I was expecting to be assigned cadet; however, I was not expecting to be given two at once.

"Two? Don't you think that might be a bit much? He still has to keep his cover-up at Beacon." K asked, confused.

"Yes, that's why I just sent him the papers should he want to leave Beacon." Zed explained.

"That would still be a bit much considering Jaune only helped train other cadets. He never entirely took one under his wing as K did with me." J added.

"Might seem like much, but he is the perfect agent for these two cadets." Zed explained.

"What do you think, Jaune?" K asked. I thought it over for a moment before giving my answer.

"Alright. I'll do the paperwork to leave Beacon. Though, we would need to come up with a cover story as to why I left Beacon for my friends and teammates there." I answered.

"Can't we just neuralyze them?" J asked.

"Unfortunately, no. It would be easier and quicker if we come up with a good cover story only." I answered.

"Well, that settles it." Zed said before turning back to me. "Also, before we continue, would you like your old apartment back or a new one?"

"New one." I answered as I never liked my old one as it was way too cramped.

"Okay. I got it down." Zed said as he typed my answer into his computer. "Now that this is done, would you like to meet your cadets?"

"Yes, where are they?" I asked.

"Right outside the room." He answered before pressing a button to alert the cadets that they could come in. "Jaune, meet your new cadets to train."

Turning to the door, we saw two figures enter the room. Immediately, I knew who they both were.

"Hello." One said, smiling. Her facial expression told me that she was nervous about the whole thing.

"Good afternoon." The other one said in a tone that distinctly told me Atlas trained her.

"Jaune. Meet May Zedong and Ciel Soleil. Your new cadets." Zed said to me with a smirk when he saw me bury my head in my hands.

'This will be a trainwreck.' I thought, feeling a headache come on. 'I'm definitely going to need more pie and coffee after this.'
