Chapter 50
AN: fifty chapters, thank you so much for the incredible support. ALSO, for this chapter I would like to make it clear that I'm a lawyer, not a doctor, so the medical info in this chapter is from google/research so anything wrong I apologize.
Hope you like this chapter despite the pain.
After a night of pretty restless sleep as she is so used to sleeping next to Derek, Addison is getting Zola ready for the day, but she is also making a phone call.
"Hello, you've reached Dr Derek Shepherd, please leave a message after the beep, if this is an emergency please contact Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital," Derek's voice says.
"Hey Derek, it's me," Addison says. "I guess you're getting prepped for surgery," Addison assumes, not knowing the truth. "I just wanted to wish you luck… it's a beautiful day to save lives," Addison says, as she looks down at Zola. "Hey, Zo, do you want to say hello to Daddy?" Addison asks, and she moves the phone, so it is right near their daughter.
"Daddy," Zola says, and Addison smiles and brings the phone back to her ear.
"Did you hear that? I love you, Zola and the Sheplets love you, I'll see you tonight, bye," Addison says before hanging up, counting down the hours until she sees Derek again.
Far away from Seattle, in the middle of nowhere, Mark wakes up with pieces of the plane around him. As Mark comes to the first thing, he realizes is that people are screaming the second thing he realizes is that a piece of the plane is in his thigh.
"DEREK!" Mark yells as he pulls it out and grabs a seatbelt that has landed nearby. "LEXIE! ARIZONA!" Mark yells, as he uses the seatbelt as a torniquet, and as he gets no response he, with some difficulty, stands up and starts to walk. "DEREK? LEXIE? ARIZONA?" Mark yells as he walks.
"MARK?" A voice yells back and he turns around to see Lexie, coming towards him.
"Oh, thank god," Mark says relieved, feeling beyond happy to see her, and once they are close enough he and Lexie hug, both incredibly glad to see each other again, and neither wanting to let go. As they hug Mark puts his hand on Lexie's back and he realizes that she is bleeding. "You're bleeding," Mark says worried as he realizes that Lexie has a pretty deep gash on her back.
"So are you," Lexie responds, sounding worried. "We need to find the others, I need to find Meredith," Lexie says, feeling worried about her sister.
"I need to find Derek," Mark says, feeling the most worried about the man who is his brother, but he is also worried about the others, as they both hear a scream they recognize.
"Arizona," Mark and Lexie say together and they both hurry, or attempt to hurry, to where the scream came from.
Once Mark and Lexie get close enough to the plane the see Arizona leaning against a pretty intact piece of the plane with a serious leg injury.
"Arizona," Mark says, sounding glad, though he is worried about her injury.
"Have you seen Meredith?" Lexie says, searching between the trees, hoping to catch a glimpse of her sister.
"Or Derek," Mark adds, feeling his worry grow.
"Meredith's over here," Cristina, who has already helped Arizona with her injury, says in a tone of voice that neither Lexie nor Mark have ever heard her use, and they follow the sound to find Cristina on the other side of the piece of the plane.
"Mer?" Lexie asks, and Cristina moves a little to reveal Meredith, clearly trapped underneath the a part of the plane as only a little bit of her body can be seen. "Oh God, Mer," Lexie says, sounding horrified.
"Lexie, is that you?" Meredith asks, and even though neither Mark nor Lexie can see her her voice tells them plenty.
"Yeah, it's me," Lexie says, laying on the ground next to where Meredith is trapped.
"Have you seen Derek?" Mark asks Cristina, feeling terrified as he is the only one still missing.
"No," Cristina says, shaking her head.
"I need to find him," Mark says, as he notices that Cristina's shoulder is dislocated.
"We need to get Meredith out," Lexie says, trying to craw closer to his sister.
"Be careful," Mark says as he walks over to Cristina and gestures towards her shoulder and after seeing her nod Mark pops Cristina's shoulder back in pace. "I need to find Derek," Mark says, though he also knows that they need to get Meredith out from where she is trapped, if they can.
"Go, but get back here quickly," Cristina tells Mark, and Mark hesitantly looks towards Lexie as while he needs to find Derek, he also doesn't want to leave Lexie.
"I'll be as quick as possible," Mark says, before leaving, calling for Derek as he goes, as he hopes that if he can find Derek, they can walk together to get Meredith out, and that may be their only shot.
Far away from where the others on the plane are Derek wakes up. Like Mark he is incredibly confused when he first opens his eyes.
"Addie?" Derek asks, feeling confused, but knowing that what he wants most is her, and after a few moments his surroundings come into focus and he remembers what happened. As he realizes what happens Derek realizes that he is in pain, and for a second, he think she can hear Mark's voice calling for him.
Looking around Derek realizes that the pain he is in is because his hand is stuck in a piece of metal from the pain.
"DEREK!" Mark's voice yells again and this time Derek is sure that he is not imagining it.
"Over… here," Derek yells, desperately hoping his brother hears him, but he's not able to yell very loudly, and so he realizes that he will have to get free on his own, which he will do as he wants to make it back to Addison and his kids, and there is only one way he can do it. Looking around Derek picks up a large rock with his hand that isn't trapped and uses it to break his hand so that he can get free.
At the hospital, having no idea what is going on in the woods, Addison is with Teddy and Amelia and the three of them, who as usual travelled to the hospital together, are walking into the attendings lounge.
"I cannot believe you thought that was a good idea," Teddy says shocked as after Amelia playfully teased Addison, Addison responded with a story of teenage Amelia.
"In my defense… I was high," Amelia admits.
"Pretty sure that makes it worse, not better," Addison says, knowing they can only laugh about it now because Amelia is on the other side.
"I don't know, doesn't it give you hope that I didn't do something that stupid sober?" Amelia asks, and before Addison can answer she feels a sharp pain in her stomach that makes her gasp. "Addie?" Amelia asks concerned.
"Pain," Addison says, looking both in pain and afraid, as she runs through all the possible reasons why she could be in pain and what they mean. "Something's wrong, something's really wrong," Addison admits, sounding afraid, as she doesn't know what's exactly wrong she just knows that something is.
"Okay, we'll get you to OB," Teddy says, hurrying over to Addison's side so that she can help her.
"Derek," Addison says, even though she believes he is in surgery, as she leans against Teddy slightly. "I need Derek," Addison explains.
"I'll call him," Amelia promises. "But if they've begun the surgery you probably won't be able to talk to him," Amelia admits. "And I'll go get Callie and Bailey," Amelia says, as she knows Addison will want them, and the three of them head out of the Attending's lounge, Addison needing to lean on Teddy a bit more as they go.
While Teddy is helping Addison to OB Amelia is running around the hospital, ignoring the multiple yells of, 'don't run' that she hears. As she runs Amelia has pulled her phone and is making a call.
"Of course, you're not answering," Amelia says annoyed. "Derek it's me, your favorite screw up sister, call back the second you can, it's an emergency, and no I'm not being overdramatic," Amelia says, before hanging up the phone and as she does she sees exactly who she is looking for; Callie and Bailey with Ben. "Bailey! Callie!" Amelia exclaims as she hurries towards them.
"Amelia? What's wrong?" Callie asks, seeing her, and from the second she sees her she knows that something isn't right.
"Addie, something's wrong, Teddy's helping her to OB," Amelia explains, clearly worried for Addison, as she attempts to catch her breath. "You need to come," Amelia says, looking between Callie and Bailey, and without another word the three of them go running towards OB.
In the woods as Mark searches for Derek, and Derek fights to get himself free, Lexie and Cristina are trying to figure out how badly Meredith is trapped as they also keep an eye on Arizona.
"So you can't move at all?" Lexie asks her sister, doing her best to stay calm. Even though it likely wasn't safe she crawled under the plane to Meredith. While Cristina also wanted to crawl under her shoulder injury made it a little harder, so Lexie was the only one who was able to.
"No," Meredith says, fighting for each breath. "I don't even know if I still have two arms and two legs," Meredith reveals, confirming what Lexie was fearing.
"Okay, I've got to talk to Cristina, but I'll be right back, and we're both really close," Lexie tells Meredith.
"You don't have to lie, I know how bad this is," Meredith informs Lexie.
"We don't know anything yet," Lexie says, even though every single one of her instincts are telling her how bad this is. "I'll be right back," Lexie promises her sister, before carefully crawling back out to where Cristina is.
"How is she?" Cristina asks, knowing enough to know that her person is likely in bad shape.
"Not good, I can't tell how bad her injuries are, but she can't feel her legs or arms; I don't know if it would be better to get her out of there or have her stay there until we're rescued," Lexie admits.
"We have to get her out, it's the only way we're going to see how her bad her injuries are," Cristina admits.
"Then we need Mark and Derek, I don't think we're going to get her out without them," Lexie admits, hoping that they both get back soon.
At the hospital, desperately wishing Derek was with her, Addison is in an examination room. As Amelia, Teddy, Callie, and Bailey are all sitting around Addison knows she isn't alone, but it doesn't feel the same as she knows it would if Derek was with her.
As she lays in the bed Dr Ryan is doing an ultrasound and as she moves the screen so Addison can't see it Addison knows it is bad news.
"Dr Ryan?" Addison asks, feeling worried, and as she can hear the worry in her sisters voice Amelia reaches out and takes her hand, wanting to offer her as much comfort as possible. "What's wrong?" Addison asks, her voice shaking.
"There is something we need to talk about, but I need to check a couple more things," Dr Ryan says, attempting to sound calm and authoritative, but she knows that anything she says Addison will automatically know exactly what it means as Addison knows things that not even she does.
"Miranda, what's on the screen?" Addison asks, as she is close enough to see, and while she isn't an expert in Neonatal or OB Bailey does know how to read an Ultrasound and so she knows what Doctor Ryan has realized.
"Addison….." Bailey starts to say, in a gentle tone that Addison knows she barely uses.
"Show me the screen," Addison says in the tone of voice which no one ever refuses to comply with.
"Addison, I'll turn around the scene, but you need to remain calm," Doctor Ryan says, even though she knows it is fruitless, before turning the screen around.
As the screen turns around Addison searches it and realizes exactly what Doctor Ryan is concerned about.
"Placental abruption," Addison realizes, being able to tell that it is there. "Only mild, and just started to peal away, but it's there," Addison realizes, knowing exactly what it means and running though every placental abruption she has ever seen.
"What's the treatment?" Amelia asks, searching her brain for everything Addison, and her sister, have ever said about placental abruptions.
"There is none, just rest," Addison says, and as she studies the ultrasound she realizes something that Doctor Ryan clearly hasn't realized. "But that's not my biggest problem," Addison reveals, as she rests her hands on stomach, feeling her fear rise, but at the same time she is fighting to remain calm.
"What do you mean?" Teddy asks, as she notices that even Doctor Ryan looks confused.
"The boys, theirs a reason baby C heartrate is slower," Addison reveals, knowing that Doctor Ryan would have at least realized that. "TTTS," Addison explains, saying the thing she has been fearing since she learnt that two of the babies were sharing a placenta.
"Joined by the blood vessels," Teddy says, moving closer to have a look. "I wouldn't have even realized if I didn't know what to look for," Teddy says, realizing exactly what Addison has noticed, as she knows blood vessels so well.
"Addie what are you doing?" Amelia asks shocked as Addison is moving her legs and starting stand up, removing all the monitoring as she does.
"I can't do this right now, not without Derek," Addison reveals. "I know what I can do to get through today, and then tonight I will talk it through with Derek, and I will decide on the treatment because this is my area of expertise, not any of yours," Addison says, including Doctor Ryan in that, and without another word Addison leaves the exam room as while she is still in some pain she knows what she has to do.
"What was that?" Bailey asks surprised, as that wasn't how she expected Addison to react.
"That was Bizzy," Amelia reveals, realizing that the others probably wouldn't have seen that side of Addison before. "When Addie's scared, or hurt, she reverts back to her Forbes Montgomery training it's her way of dealing, or not dealing more accurately," Amelia admits, feeling worried as she knows that Addison only gets like this when she is truly not okay.
"Well, she will need to deal with this, the placental abruption is bad enough, but if Addison is right about the TTTS then this is a lot worse than I realized," Doctor Ryan reveals, not overly sure she can help Addison with the TTTS as she doesn't know how to split placental blood vessels.
Every single person who sees Addison after she left the exam room just sees a woman who looks like she is on a mission. Walking with her head up, and strutting tall, Addison doesn't even give a hint about what is going on. After walking through the hospital Addison ends up in a storage closest that she spent quiet a bit of time in when she lived in Seattle last time. Once the door is closed Addison's Forbes Montgomery mask drops and she cries, as she clutches her stomach, knowing she loves her children deeply and she doesn't want to lose them. As she cries, and makes her way over to where she can sit down, Addison thinks about as badly as she doesn't want to lose any of her babies she just as badly doesn't want Zola to grow up without her, she wants all four of her children to live happy, loving, and fulfilled life.
As she cries Addison, who is starting to hyperventilate, pulls her phone and calls the one person she wants to speak to, but to her disappointment the call goes straight to voicemail.
"Derek… it's me….. I need you…. I need you to call me back… please…. All our babies are in danger…. It's bad… and I don't know if we're going to get through this….. l love you…. I don't know what to do… I need you," Addison says, as her mask crumbles to pieces and she completely breaks down.
While she breaks down the door opens and Bailey walks in, without a word Bailey walks over to where Addison is sitting on a bucket, and hugs her.
"I've got you," Bailey tells Addison.
"I can't do this Miranda," Addison admits, as she clutches onto her friend.
"Yes, you can," Bailey tells Addison, believing that.
"I can't, not without Derek," Addison admits, as the two women break apart.
"You're Addison Montgomery, you've never needed a man, not even Derek," Bailey tells her, in a determined voice. "Derek will be back tonight, but until he's back you've got me; I'll hold your hand, just like you held mine," Bailey tells Addison, taking her hand to prove her point, and Addison even with how afraid she is, and how much pain she is feeling, Addison is incredibly grateful for her friend.
