An: I need to say again: In this fanfiction is spoken about sensible topics like, suicide, depression, panic attacks... In general mental health struggles.
Mike, Rachel, Louis and a very pregnant Sheila accompanied now Donna, Harvey and Haylay who was playing with the Maki that Mike had brought for them for lunch. Harvey looked over the sight before him, over his friends talking about the new coming baby, over his niece that he already missed. Over Donna, a laughing happy and very free Donna.
A sight that was burned into his brain for years, since he meet her, the way she was always so full of life, playfull and smart. He had seen that side of her over the many years often, but not quite like that. Not this homely, in his home, casual clothes. Like she belonged exactly at this seat next to him all along, she did belong right there.
The actuality of her being right where she was filled him with enourmous joy, like it finally just all made sense and clicked into one piece.
He remembered what he only early today said to him, what she had asked him to figure out, what did he need to be happy? His answer was her, and he stood by that, but looking at the bigger picture he realised he needed to figure out how that will look. What he wanted his future to look like.
Picture's of him and Donna popped into his head, in a smaller more domestic apartment, something more cozy, more Donna. Maybe even a house? Maybe a dog? The thought of a redheaded baby in Donna's arms pushed in the forefront of his mind…
Harvey could not supress a small smile tilting up on the corners of his lips.
'Why are you smiling', Asked Donna with her face expressions.
Harvey rested his hands on her knee, squeezing it affirmly, then leant a little more toward her and whispered, "I just like seeing' you like this".
He could see immediately how she mirrored his smile, her eyes told him that she did too.
But suddenly the doorbell rung, breaking theit moment.
"Mommy!" Haylay exclaimed happily, and already ran to the door, followed by her uncle.
Harvey opened the door and was imidently greeted by his former sister-in-law, and his nephew.
Katie bent down at the sight of her daughter, hugging her tightly and whispering in her ear how much she had missed her daughter.
After also Jack greeted his sister Haylay, they all turned their attention to Harvey again.
"Hey Harvey, again I can't thank you enough that you kept Haylay with you this summer, I know you had alot going on but you were a great help with everything…" Katie said thankfully.
"It was not a problem" Harvey told her.
He wasn't sure how to act around Katie, he felt the need to tell her how stupid her actions were. But he knew it shouldn't be any of his concerns, and it would only make more of a mess, especially Infront of his niece and nephew.
"Look I am sorry this-" Katie began a little shamefully, realising maybe she should explain herself.
"Yes, but maybe not now, not to me" Harvey told her firmly.
"Okay- Look I would stay but I really want to just bring the kids home…"Katie told him.
"Okay" Harvey said, trying to not sound bummed.
He would miss Haylay, he knew that already, over the short time she had stayed with him they came closer. And he simply loved his niece very much, it was going to be weird not having her there all the time.
Harvey took the bags that he had already placed by the door with Donna before the others came, and handed them over into Katie's hands.
Then he picked up Haylay and hugged her tightly.
"I will miss you lots" Harvey whispered into her ear.
"You come visit us often now, right?" Haylay asked.
"I will, promise"
Then he kissed her forehead and settled on the ground again.
"Good then…are we ready to go?" Katie asked her daughter.
"No wait, I need to say goodbye to Donna!", Haylay realised, "Oh and Mike and Rachel!"
Then she ran again in Harvey's condo.
"Goodbye Mike and Rachel" The little girl said hugging them both.
"Come visit us anytime" Rachel said to the girl smiling.
"And you two were nice too" Haylay said a little unsure to Sheila and Louis.
"I am glad to have met you" Louis told the little girl.
Then Haylay turned towards Donna, climbed on Donna's lap and hugged her tightly.
"Please make him visit us soon" The little girl told Donna earnestly.
"I will" Donna ressured her.
"And you need to come to" Haylay ordered.
"I will, now you better go, I bet your dad missed you very much!" Donna told the girl with a smile.
Only minutes later Haylay, her brother and Mother were out of the doors, walking away from the building.
Harvey walked back to the table, trying not to loom to sad, he did not want to ruin the mood.
"Hey come on don't look so sad you will see her soon!" Mike tried to cheer his best friend up.
"I know" Harvey said with a sad smile.
He sat down again, in only seconds feeling Donna's hand tracing over his knuckles under the table.
"If our kid is as easy to handle as her we will have no problem!" Louis told his friends.
"Louis not to burst your bubble, but your kid is definitely not going to be easy-handling" Harvey joked.
"Hey what's that supposed to mean!" Louis defended.
"Nothing" Harvey said with a self satisfied grin, that made Donna chuckle.
Mike and Rachel were already in the buildings elevator, ready to go to their hotel rooms.
"It's kinda odd that Donna didn't want to come with us" Rachel acknowledge with a frown.
"Yeah, maybe she is with the new man she met?" Mike suggested.
"Do you really think so?"
"I mean, what else could it be, I think we shouldn't question it, she seems very relaxed and happy right now…"
"I know, but it's just weird, she did not even tell me what's his name" Rachel told her Husband sighing.
"Do you think maybe something is wrong with the guy?" Mike asked now a little alarmed.
"I mean we don't know…Maybe we should ask Harvey, maybe he knows?" Rachel suggested.
"That's just digging salt into an open wound" Mike protested.
"Maybe…" Rachel acknowledge defeated.
"But what if it is good to tell Harvey?"
"Mik no" Rachel said sternly.
"Come on it's obvious that he loves her, they just need a little push…"
"How did that little push work out the last time?" Rachel half asked.
"Not that well..." Mike admitted.
They both stood there in silence for some time, waiting in the elevator, both not sure what to do.
"Shit" Rachel suddenly cursed.
"What's wrong babe?" Mike asked.
"I forgot my phone at Harveys"
"Okay, come on we are just going back" Mike told her, hitting the elevator button once again.
Before they stepped out of the elevator and made their way to knock on Harvey's door, Rachel held Mike back.
"What?" Mike asked confused.
"Don't do anything stupid" She warned.
"I wouldn't dream of it"
"I am serious, they finally can talk to each other, I don't think they can fix it after another blow, the last one was already…"
"I am not going to do anything stupid I swear" Mike told her.
"Why do I not believe it" Rachel said more to herself.
Then they both walked towards Harvey's door, Mike knocked twice. But nothing happend.
"I don't think he can hear us…"Mike stated.
"Yeah, maybe let's just come back tommorow?" Rachel suggested.
"No don't be silly" Mike told his wife and knocked again.
Still nothing.
"Wait the door is open" Mike told her.
"We can't just go in Mike…", Rachel told him, but already knew he wasn't listening.
"He isn't going to bite our heads off, he probably isn't even going to find out"
Mike creaked the door open and slipped through it, followed by Rachel. They both walked towards the livingroom, towards the table. Mike frowned a little when he saw that the table was not cleaned up at all, it looked like it had when they had left, but he didn't think of it much.
He finally saw Rachel's phone and took it in his hands, holding it up, turning around to show it to her.
But what he saw was his wife's face masked in horror.
"What" Mike whispered confused.
"Look" Was all Rachel said, point towards Harvey's bedroom.
And there it was, a already shirtless Harvey, his head vanished into the crook of Donnas neck, her hands tracing over his torso. Their feet tangled up togetherness, in the middle of Harvey's bed.
Sounds that Mike definitely didn't wish to hear drowning through the apartment, Mike out of shock let Rachel's phone slip out of his hands.
"Shit" Mike cursed, but it was already to late.
Harvey's head moved out of his position, turning towards his friends, in sync with Donna.
"What the hell?" Harvey grooned, now definitely not out of satisfaction.
Donna immediately dissapeared into the bathroom next to the bedroom, emberassed fixing herself up.
Harvey walked towards his friends, still shirtless, not motivated to put his shirt back on.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" He asked.
"The door was opened?" Mike tried.
"So what you are just gonna walk in?"
"No I mean- Rachel forgot her phone…"
Now Donna was also joing them.
"Never heard of knocking?" Harvey asked.
"To our defence we did knock", Mike paused, "Twice" He finished with a mischievous grin.
"Okay I get it" Harvey said grooning, then turned toward Donna, "Do you think now is the time to talk about the birds and the bees?"
"I knew the day would come…"Donna said dramatically.
"Look kid- So when two people love each other very much, they sometimes-"
"Okay stop" Mike exclaimed.
"You don't need to be scared, it's natural to have urges, you know sex is totally healthy and-" Donna teased.
Rachel chuckled at the view of her husband.
"Okay okay we are going…" Mike said now looking again to his wife who still looked a little shocked.
"Come on Rach" He nudged her towards the door.
Rachel walked after him, then turned around and said with a big smile, "I am ver happy for you Donna, for both of you"
"I am too- And I told you so" He said to Harvey.
And then they both vanished through the door once again.
"Well that's not really keeping the relationship a Secret" Harvey have joked.
"We tried" Donna said sighing.
"It's not that bad, is it?" Harvey asked.
"No- I mean, I just would have liked it if it wouldn't be such a big deal..."
"Because it not a big deal?" Harvey asked.
"No, it's not that..."
They both walked towards the bed again and layed down next to each other.
"Then what is it?" Harvey asked, leaning himself up to look at her better.
"I just want to protect this, us"
"You are scared" Harvey realised.
Normally he was the scared one, he never really realised that Donna might also be insecure.
"Who wouldn't be" Donna said chuckling.
"Yeah who wouldn't be..." Harvey said.
His finger tops slowly traced down her arm, caressing it. They just lay there in silence, a comforting silence, both thinking about what's next to come. Donna had closed her eyes, only focusing on Harveys smell and breathing.
"I thought about what you asked me" Harvey told her, breaking the silence.
"You did?" She asked opening her eyes again.
"Yeah"
"So what did you figure out?" She asked him.
"I don't care about work" He blurted out.
"What?" Donna frowned up at him.
"What I mean is, I do want to work again, not in the old firm though, I don't think that the best idea... But work does not seem important you know?" Harvey tried to explain.
"Never thought I would hear that from you" Donna said giggling.
"Well it's true"
"Okay so what's important?" Donna asked.
"You"
"You said that before, and although that's very sweet, it wasn't really what I asked you..." Donna said with a big grin.
"But it is true you know"
Donna just rolled her eyes.
"I mean it" Harvey insisted.
"Harvey-"
"Okay, I get it that's not really as very descriptive future", Harvey said and chuckled, "But technically it's not wrong you know, I mean I want to have a life with you, and that does include you, you know?"
"Don't lawyer me" She told him playfully.
"Okay so- what if we would move to Chicago?" Harvey asked, holding his breath as he looked at Donna.
The thought of moving to Chicago never quite left his mind, after Jessica asked him to work for him, with him, again. It wasn't only the possibility and change he saw in working with Jessica and the change it would make for him professionally. More even it was the feeling of wanting to live in Chicago. The more research he did, the more the city, and the neighborhoods around it seemed to fit.
After Donna still did not say anything Harvey rambled on, "Okay so, I mean, I know your family and my family would be a little more away... But I would be okay to move there if that is what you want... But I just I don't know-"
"Chicago sounds nice" Donna interrupted his rant.
"Yeah?"
"Yes it does" She said smiling at him.
"Because I researched a little and..." Harvey sayed but then stopped himself.
"What?" Donna asked sitting up next to him.
Harvey looked at the matress, away from Donna, trying to find words.
"Donna what do you see when you look into the future?" Harvey asks after a while.
"I don't know" Donna lied.
"Come on tell me" Harvey begged.
"Well it all depends-"
"No tell me about your perfect future, how would it look?"
"I don't think it's the best idea to discuss this now" Donna said a little stressed.
"Please"
"Look, I know you don't want that, and I am really fine with it, and happy, so there is no need to go into it" Donna said looking at him set.
"Just tell me" Harvey whined.
"No" Donna said sternly.
"Goddamnit Donna I am trying, why can't you?"
"Oh I am not trying?" She looked at him furiously.
They both now stood up, standing in the bedroom.
"Yes" Harvey told her, it wasn't true, he knew it, but he couldn't stop himself.
"All I ever do is trying!" Donna shouted at him.
"Well I guess you are not that good at trying!" Harvey shouted back.
"Okay I am going, I cannot deal with this right now" Donna said, now picking up her things.
"Of course now you are leaving" Harvey said jaundiced.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I am just saying, you leaving, that's really nothing new"
"That's not fair" Donna protested.
At this point they were only hurting each other, he could see the tears welling up in her eyes already.
"Donna-"
"You know what, yes I am leaving, I should have known you are still not ready, you probably never will be"
Then the door closed with a loud thump...
