Inko stared down at the carrot (horse?), it let out huffs of air as it glared back up at her. It was an impromptu staring contest that neither was willing to back down from, and little Izuku just glanced between the two. She was going to address this, she will, just give her a second, she's trying to figure out how to say this.
Izuku brought back down his hand, the horse stumbling for a second before hopping off and nuzzling its body against Izuku's. Izuku just patted its head, the horse let out another huff of air, and bit his fingers playfully.
Inko scratched the back of her head as she tried to figure this out. Izuku kissed her finger, and now her cut is gone, but he also made the carrot into an animal? Could it even be considered an animal, it was food.
"Izuku…"
She reached for her child, voice soft, but the carrot snapped its head back to her, neighing loudly, and pawing at the couch. Izuku babbled something to the horse, as he placed a finger on his mouth. The horse seemed to get the message as it stuck its head up and squished itself closer to her baby.
"How did this happen? A horse? How can it-" Inko muttered lowly, while she crouched down to be eye level with the two. The horse started to glare daggers again, but Izuku's petting seemed to keep it in place. "Does it even have organs? How does this work?"
"Gem!" Izuku cried, patting his stomach. Inko smiled gently at her baby.
"Yes, I know you have a gem, Izuku."
"Gem! Ah Nag shish Shpit," He cries again. Tapping his stomach with more purpose now. Inko nodded lightly, placing a hand on her chin as she stared harder at the horse.
"So, my cut disappeared after Izuku kissed it, does that mean he has healing kisses? That's his quirk? But that doesn't make sense, how does the horse come into play? I would assume healing would just affect humans, but quirks are weird, I could be completely wrong. I'm going to have to make an appointment with a doctor, oh gosh this is so weird," Inko started to mutter as she tried to run through all possibilities in her mind. What was she going to do with the horse? Guess they have a pet now? What would it even eat?
Izuku clapped, drawing Inko's attention to him. When he saw that she was looking, he grabbed another piece of carrot and licked it. The vegetable sparkled for a few seconds before he put it on the couch. Right in front of Inko's eyes, she saw the chopped carrot regrow itself, before gaining the features of a horse. The new horse then whinnied, the first horse following suit.
Okay. Okay, okay, Inko could handle this. It's a quirk, obviously. Healing kisses and bringing vegetables to life. Okay. Cool. Does this extend to all food groups?
Inko stands back up and walks over to the phone on the counter. She keeps her eyes on her son and the two horses, although they don't seem violent. They were currently nuzzling on Izuku, giving him kisses, and generally being very gentle. She doesn't look at the phone as she dials the numbers.
"Hello and thank you for calling Shizuoka Quirk Evaluation Hospital. My name is Hayashi and may I ask who I'm speaking to?"
"Hello, my name is Midoriya Inko, and I would like to make an appointment for my son Izuku."
Steven sat in a stroller as Inko rolled him around outside. After the whole carrot horse(s) incident, Inko called someone to get him evaluated for his 'quirk'. He knew what a quirk was, he wasn't blind to how some people had animal heads or multiple body parts. Inko even levitated a few things in his presence, and he was so starstruck when he first saw it.
They were walking down the semi-busy street to get to the doctors, the sun high in the sky, and a light breeze rustling his hair. It was an extremely nice day out, usually when days like this Inko would take Steven into the backyard to play. Even before meeting Inko, Steven would go out into the beach and swim with the gems on days like this. Playing Marco Polo, racing in the water, making sandcastles. Steven felt a tingle of sadness reminiscing on those moments. The gems were usually busy on missions, and when they had free time they would all hang out. He always treasured those moments, especially when he was younger (older?) and couldn't go on missions yet. Now it just hurts more to think about.
Were they looking for him? It would take time, obviously, but how much longer? He's spent a year here, and he's getting nervous. His dad must be so worried, a whole year gone. The longest Steven has gone without seeing his dad was about a week, but he was trapped on an island at that time.
The two grenettes turned the corner, and the hospital was in sight. Inko kept her steady pace as she pushed the stroller, and it was calming. He probably would have taken a quick nap there, but his anxieties kept him up. Steven kept his eyes on the hospital, as some of the people around just spared the baby glances of affection. He's been to the hospital once, way back when he first arrived here. It was a quick check-up, and they kept poking his gem, calling it a quirk.
He didn't think it would qualify, but he can't really call it anything else when nobody could understand him.
They reached the hospital and Inko rolled him in. The hospital reception walls were painted a very pale green with childish motivational posters plastered up. Plastic seats lined the walls of the room, with a few families occupying some of the seats, while some older children played in a corner of the room. In the middle of the room sat a crescent desk, a woman with wild long pink hair sat behind it typing something with terrifying speed. Steven didn't think he could see her fingers. She was moving that fast.
Inko walked up to the woman, the woman barely acknowledging that someone approached.
"Hello, my name is Midoriya Inko, I'm here to check-in for an appointment for my son?" Her voice, while meek, did catch the woman's attention. The pinkette stopped typing suddenly and spun in her chair to the back of the desk. In what seemed like a second, she pulled out a clipboard, pen, and some forms.
"Here you go, please make sure the information is correct, fill out anything that is missing, and have a seat. The doctor will call for you soon."
Inko was startled as the receptionist practically shoved the objects into her hands, and went back to typing without skipping a beat. She stared baffled at the clipboard, before going over and sitting in a chair. She started to fill out the paperwork as Steven continued to look at the people occupying the room.
Stars, they all looked so cool. With body modifications and kids using their quirks in the corner, it just looked amazing. Back home, in Beach City, the only people who had 'quirks' were the gems, and people who weren't local tended to be wary of gems. It was so amazing that even with all these different displays of powers, people weren't treated differently, that they were accepted easily. He may have sounded like his mom when he says this, but human beings were amazing!
A kid launched a toy and flew across the room, landing near Inko and Steven. Another child, a little boy, quickly ran up to grab it again and stopped looking at Steven. Green eyes met red, and the boy just stared. He looked up to Inko and spoke,
"Why's a baby here, a baby can't have a quirk, they gotta be big!" He held his hands up to emphasize this, and Inko looked down at him.
"Quirks can come at any time, little one. Why don't you go back to playing, hm?"
"My mommy says quirks come when you're four or more!" He scratched his neck lightly.
"A good rule, but sometimes they come early," Inko checked something else off on the paperwork. The boy continued to stare at Steven, and he just stared back. This kid had a really intense stare, jeez.
The staring contest continued before the boy smiled wide, and gave Steven the toy. A plush green rabbit that was worn with age and roughhousing by the children. Steven grabbed at it, slightly confused, as the boy looked back to Inko to speak.
"How-"
"Tenko!" Someone called, and the boy, Tenko, turned to face an Adult and a little girl leaving the doctor's room. She quickly went to the child and apologized to Inko profusely. Inko was quick to reassure her that everything was alright and that the boy had done nothing wrong.
All the while, the little girl said something to Tenko, patting his back when the boy pouted. He muttered something too low to hear, and off the family went, out the door and leaving the doctor's office.
It wasn't too long after that Inko finished the paperwork, and they were called into the doctor's office.
Inko had picked up Izuku out of his stroller and placed him on the small examining table, placing a hand in front of him to discourage movement. Doctor Tsubasa typed something on the lone computer in the room, before settling down to ask a few questions.
"Now Midoriya-san, if I have the information right, you are here to research your child's new quirk, correct?"
"That is correct,"
"Other than the healing kisses, have you noticed anything else strange?"
"Not much, Izuku seems to be developing faster than children his age, but the quirk was a recent development."
"Nothing else? The gem in his stomach didn't do anything?" Dr. Tsubasa turned in his chair to the small family. Inko shook her head lightly, while Izuku patted his stomach at the man.
"No, I realize the last time I visited that there were speculations that his gem was his quirk, but other than the kisses, nothing else has appeared."
The doctor hummed lightly, tapping a small pen to the table. He looked to Izuku, and the baby stared back. Licking his lips the doctor spoke again;
"Odd, but not too uncommon. There is a small percentage of people who look to have mutation-type quirks, but their true quirk is something else entirely. Quite a fascinating phenomenon, it is speculated that the 'mutation' was meant to be their quirk, and they truly have two. Others say that the quirk appearance is like genetics, and was simply passed down. Due to Midoriya-Kun being adopted here, we can't say for sure whether his birth parents had a quirk connected to their gem, or maybe inherited the gem from their ancestors!"
He held a hand to his chin as he nodded to his own turned back and typed something else onto the computer for a second, before pausing. His eyebrows scrunched together, as his hands hovered over the keys. Dr. Tsubara turned back to Inko, and spoke again;
"He has healing kisses?"
"Yes?" The mother shifted her weight from one foot to the other, raising an eyebrow at the doctor's question.
"How did you figure this out, what happened?"
"I was in my kitchen and cut myself with a knife. Izuku kissed the finger, and when I went to clean my wound, the cut was gone. I'm sorry, but I'm not seeing the relevance here?"
"Did you feel anything after, maybe a slight fatigue?"
"No? Why?"
The doctor hummed and looked again at Izuku. "This sounds like a hero's quirk, Recovery Girl's to be exact."
And wasn't that just a shock. Her little baby has a very similar quirk to a pro hero. Inko never really paid attention to heroes, as while she found them very helpful, she also knew the danger a hero can attract. She felt her body stiffen for a second, trying to process this- does this mean her baby is a relative to Recovery Girl? A pro hero? The pro hero left an infant child on a beach with dangerous appliances that could have crushed him to death if luck was not on his side? Are you kidding?
Izuku babbled something next to her, snapping Inko out of angry thoughts. He patted at her arm, saying 'gem' again while patting at his stomach. Inko smiled at her son, to ease him, but that just seemed to make him babble more.
"Kwuisal! Gem! Ah ga ish fom mi amma! No Reshavera gial!" He seemed angry as he said this, pouting at both the adults in the room. They both were silent for a second before the good doctor smiled at Inko.
"Of course, I'm just speculating, nothing concrete. We can run some more DNA tests on Izuku if you like, to get your mind off it."
"No, it's fine. Please, let's just continue with the appointment."
"Alright then," Dr. Tsubara rose from the chair and placed some gloves on. He grabbed a thermometer from its stand and quickly cleaned the tip. "First a routine check-up."
A'ight, so I think I gotta update this story roughly every two weeks. It gives me more time to write it out, and think of ideas and dialogue for the story. Also, Steven might be acting OOC for a while, until he gets a bit older. He can't be a carefree kid right now, he's alone and stressed, and he doesn't know if the gems are coming because he can't contact them.
In that sort of environment, I doubt anyone would be so happy and go-lucky.
Okay thanks for reading goodbye, have a good day.
