Six Months Later

Duncan hurried through the darkened streets of Oakdale, his hands shoved into the pockets of his hoodie and his tennis shoes making no sound on the concrete. He glanced occasionally over his shoulder to make sure he was not being observed, and ducked into the shadows every time a car passed in the street.

After what seemed an eternity, he left the main street and found himself on a residential side street lined with small ranch houses and older model cars. He came to a small brick house with a slate roof and went to the wooden gate guarding the back yard.

It was unlocked, as it should have been.

He eased it open, closed it behind him, and went to a side window. His heart was pounding and his breathing was heavy. He lightly rapped on the pane, and a few seconds later, it was opened from the inside. Pushing himself up on the sill, he climbed in. As soon as his feet were on the floor, a figure grabbed him from the darkness and shoved him onto the bed. In the half light coming from a streetlamp outside, he caught a quick glimpse of Mia's face before she attacked his mouth with a hungry kiss. She straddled him, her hands creeping under his shirt. He put his hands on her hips and was surprised to feel bare skin.

It had taken six long months but here they finally were, about to have sex for the first time. She wanted to take it slow and Duncan was okay with that. She was his girl and he didn't have to worry about anything; it would happen in time.

He knew up front what was going to happen tonight, though neither of them had outright said it, but he was still stunned by it all. He ran his hands up and down Mia's flanks and over her bare breasts. Her nipples were stiff and her chest pounded with the crazy beat of her heart.

They stretched out facing each other and made out, their hands roaming over each other's bodies.

Though their passions were high, they broke to cuddle and talk for a bit. "My mom aced her exam," he told her, "so now she's officially a detective."

"That's...good for her," Mia said. She hated the police, but admitted that, just maybe, all cops weren't really bastards after all.

"Yeah, she's excited," Duncan said.

After appending the Oakdale Slasher, Mom was congratulated by the mayor and became something of a celebrity. She had been studying to become a homicide detective ever since and now she was finally going to live her dream.

She didn't take all the credit for it. She made sure that everyone knew Bex was the one who actually stopped Ryerson. Bex struggled with what she had to do and had been going to therapy . She was okay but it would take time to come to grips with it.

Ryerson survived being shot and his trial was set to begin early next year. He was currently locked in the deepest ward of the most secure maximum security mental hospital in the state. The news said he was crazy, the DA said he was sane.

Duncan guessed they'd find out at the trial.

Mia kissed him and he kissed her back. She fumbled at the front of his pants and he helped her pull them down.

Duncan planned to only be out a few hours, but he wound up staying until dawn. When he got home, Mom was waiting for him. She grounded him and Dad nodded in agreement. Behind her back, he shot Duncan a double thumbs up and Duncan grinned.

On his way to his room, he opened Kimberly's door and turned the light on. She stirred and sat up, hair messy and eyes bleary. "You're gonna have to put away all those virgin jokes," he said.

He shut the door before she could reply. He turned and Jing was standing there with her arms crossed and an angry look on her face.

"I was just joking," Duncan said.

She kicked his shin and walked away. "I don't want you anyway. I like black guys like Yangzi now."

Okay then. Worked for Duncan.

In his room, he stretched out on his bed and smiled.

He couldn't wait to brag to his squad.
