Chapter 39
"What?" Bella shrieked. "That's not possible."
Jake gave her a you've got to be kidding me look.
"Babe, we knew this was a possibility," he grabbed her around the waist and encouraged her to lay back in bed with him. She slowly agreed and crawled back into the middle of the bed with him.
"Lots of sex… zero protection…not infertile, as we were told." He kissed her head. "It was bound to happen."
Jake could hear her heart rapidly beating, although not as fast as the other one further down her body.
"But, it's impossible. Not yet."
"Bella…"
"No!" she was cross with him now. "Listen to me. I don't know a lot about pregnancy, only a few bits from Emily and health class. But my period isn't late, it isn't even due for two weeks. So even if we did make a baby this week, it wouldn't have a heartbeat yet… there must be something else wrong with me."
Jake looked at her, confused.
"Does it sound like Emily's baby?" she asked, not having heard her's herself.
He leaned closer to her stomach and listened carefully. "Not exactly," he mumbled, now concerned himself. "Come on, let's get you to the Dr."
"It's Sunday!"
"Dr. Witt or Sue will be around. Rachel is still there for a couple more days."
After some toast for breakfast, Bella was too nervous for anything else, they headed to the Res. When they arrived at the Clinic, Bella was disappointed to see Sue's car outside. She was really hoping that her dad's girlfriend was not going to be here.
"Hey guys," Rachel said happily as they walked in. She was lying a bit more vertical today, although she still had a neck brace on.
"Hey Rach," Bella and Jacob greeted her. He walked over to her bed and gave her a kiss on the temple. "How are you feeling?"
"Much better, but Dr. Witt said I needed to keep this thing on for another day," she pouted, pointing to the brace.
"You'd better do what the Dr says. It could have been a lot worse," Jake said sympathetically.
"Oh, I know. Just sick of being stuck in bed. Paul has gone out for a run. His wolf was going crazy being indoors all the time. So I finally got him to leave me for a bit."
Bella and Jacob chuckled. But, it was fortunate for them that he wasn't around.
Sue entered the room then. "Hey guys," she called out. "You here to check on Rachel?"
"Um, actually n…" Jake said but saw his sister's scowl. "It's not the only reason we dropped by."
Rachel smirked at his cover-up.
"What's can I do for you?" Sue asked.
"Actually, it's Bella. Can we chat in your office?" Jake asked.
Sue led the way, and Rachel peered after them curiously.
"So, what's up?" Sue asked when they had all taken a seat. It was a small room with three chairs and an examination table. There was a brightly colored sea animals mural painted on the walls.
Jake looked at Bella, but she didn't feel up to speaking. The nerves were really getting to her.
"We think Bella might be pregnant," Jacob finally said with a squeeze of her hand.
Sue's eyebrow rose, and she looked at Bella, "how late are you?"
"That's the thing," Bella said nervously. "I'm not late."
"Okay… why do you think you are pregnant?"
"I can… we can hear something," Jake said.
"Something?"
"Kinda sounds like a heartbeat in her lower stomach. Something fluttering," Jake said.
Sue looked confused. "When was your last period?"
"Two weeks ago," Bella said.
"Okay, so it's unlikely, but not impossible. How about we can do a urine test anyway," Sue produced a specimen cup and gave it to Bella.
Bella went to the bathroom and returned quickly. Sue took the cup to her bench and dipped a strip test into it.
"So, while we wait, have you had any other symptoms?"
"Um," Bella had been thinking about it on the ride to the clinic. "Kind of."
"Nausea?" Sue asked.
"Yes."
"Exhaustion?"
"Yeah."
"Emotions gone crazy?"
"Well, I mean, crying is pretty standard for me." Jake chuckled.
"Tender breast."
"Uh-huh."
Sue came and sat down across from them and examined the strip.
"Well, this would explain it…." Sue smiled. "High levels of hCG. I'm gonna say congratulations. I'm pretty sure you are pregnant. We should do a scan to confirm."
Bella could see Jake smiling out the corner of her eye, trying to get her attention. But she couldn't focus. All she could see was the stupid turtle painted on the wall. Her breathing was starting to become rapid, along with her heart rate.
"Bella?" Jacob said quietly. He squeezed her hand again. "Are you okay?"
She blinked a few times but couldn't turn her head.
"Honey," he said, and she felt his warm hands cup her face. Finally, he turned her face towards his. "It's going to be alright."
She saw the concern in his eyes, and it broke her. She burst into tears. He picked her up and placed her on his lap. She cuddled into his chest and crooned soft, comforting words to her, but she heard nothing.
Eventually, the tears dried up, and she slowly lifted her head up to look at Jake.
"We can do this," he said with conviction
She nodded her head, "I know."
"It's going to be alright," he tried to encourage her.
"I love you," she replied.
"I love you, too," he kissed her gently on the lips.
Bella looked at him and could see every reason why she loved this man so much. He was her rock, and they could do this. Together.
"I'm sorry I freaked out… I don't know what came over me," she tried to apologize.
"It's probably the hormones," Sue suddenly said. Bella had completely forgotten she was in the room.
She smiled shyly back at her. "Sorry,"
"No need to apologize, darlin'. So would you like to do a scan while you are here?"
Bella looked at Jake and could see he was so excited by the prospect.
"Of course," Bella said.
Sue instructed Bella to get into a dressing gown and lie down on the bed while she and Jake stepped out of the room. "Jake, can you stay, please?" Bella was not feeling up to being alone right at this moment.
Jake helped her tie the very sexy blue gown on and climb onto the table.
Sue came back in and started to get a long white stick ready with gel.
"Um…" Jake looked very confused.
"We can't see anything this early through the stomach, so we will go internally instead."
"You mean…" now Jake was looking nervous. Bella was slightly amused at his shocked expression.
"Are you going to be okay with this, Jake?" Sue asked with a smirk. "Normally, I'd be asking the girl this, but you look more nervous than her."
Bella giggled, which was a nice change from the stress of the whole situation. Jake vaguely nodded and pulled a chair up to see up near Bella's head.
Sue prepared some gel, and they all watched the screen. Jake was holding Bella's hand, and she squeezed it back reassuringly.
Through the grey mist, there was suddenly a black circular shape on the screen. "There it is," Sue said happily.
Bella looked over at Jake's face and could see a single tear running down his cheek while he looked on at his child.
"Oh…" Sue suddenly said.
Bella frowned and looked back at the screen. There were two black objects now. Oh shit…
"Is that what I think it is?" Bella asked nervously, chewing on her bottom lip.
"If you are thinking that is twins, then yes. There are two babies," Sue confirmed.
There was silence in the room. Bella didn't know how to react. One baby was going to be enough to upturn their lives… but two?
"Wow," she said, pretty monotone.
Now it looked like the roles had reversed. Jake looked like he was freaking out.
"Two?" he finally asked.
Sue was slowly moving the scan around to get a better picture of the babies. You could see small white jellybean shapes inside the black sacks. She started measuring the size of one of them.
"Yep, and they looked to be about six weeks old."
Jake frowned. "That's not possible."
Now Sue looked confused, "why?"
"We've only been together four weeks," Jake started to stand up. Bella could see his form begin to shake.
"Oh, sit down, Jacob," Sue said impatiently. "Six weeks is the technical gestation period, but four weeks since actual conception."
"Oh," Jake said, slightly ashamed at his outbreak.
"We all know she hasn't been with anyone else, or the prophecy wouldn't have worked."
Jake finally looked back at Bella. "Sorry. I know that. I do," he said, shaking his head. "Sorry."
"Well, at least I'm not the only one who freaked out today," she said with a smile.
"Occasionally, you will get bleeding when the fetus or fetuses implant in the uterus. That is probably what you had instead of your period two weeks ago," Sue clarified. She typed some details into the computer before announcing an "estimate due date of eighth of May. Although twins will most likely be early."
Sue printed out a picture and handed it to them. She finished taking all the measurements she needed before silently leaving the room.
"We're going to be parents," Bella whispered quietly, looking down at the picture in her hands. Jake had his arm around her now, and his head was resting on her shoulder.
"Yeah, we are," Jake agreed.
When Bella got redressed, they left to the room find Paul sitting with Rachel on her bed. They had identical smirks on their faces.
"You heard?" Jacob asked.
Rachel squealed, "yes!" She looked so excited. "Congratulations, guys! Can I see the picture?" she gestured towards the sonogram in Bella's hand.
Bella walked over to them and handed it to her. Paul got off the bed, so Bella could perch on the edge.
"Naw," she gushed over it. "This is so exciting. How are you feeling?"
"A little shell shocked, to be honest. I've been feeling off for a little while, but with everything that's been going on, I thought it was just stress."
"Well, I'm sure you will have plenty of help whenever you need it. Just make sure you ask. Okay?" Rachel reassured her.
Bella smiled and nodded.
Paul and Rachel were sworn to secrecy until they announced it to the rest of the pack.
Sue gave Bella some prenatal vitamins and took some bloods. Dr. Witt would still want to see her soon.
When they finally left, Jacob drove her truck down to First Beach. They walked along the beach silently hand in hand until they reached their driftwood tree.
Jake sat down, and Bella sat cuddled into his chest. The wind was quite cold as the first signs of winter had started. The waves were buffering the coarse sand with grey clouds overhead.
"How are you feeling?" Bella asked Jacob.
"Nervous, excited, happy," he said, pulling her in closer. He kissed the top of her head and inhaled her scent. "It's no wonder you smell so much like me. I thought it was just because of all the sex we've been having."
Bella laughed, "it is because of all the sex we've been having!"
"Can't believe we made something… two somethings simply because we loved each other."
"I know," she whispered.
They stayed silent in each other's arms, looking out over the waves.
"What are you thinking about?" Jake asked her.
"We've got a lot of stuff to figure out."
"We have time."
"And, we have to tell my dad. How fast do you think you will heal from a bullet wound?" she asked with a smirk.
For the second time in three days, Bella found herself cooking up a storm in the Black's kitchen. It was decided it would be best to keep Charlie away from home turf and his gun…
There was a Mariners game on, and he and Billy were screaming at the tv. Jake was keeping them company and supplying them with plenty of drinks. He offered to help Bella cook, but she claimed to be too nervous about having anyone else in the kitchen.
Two the youngster's disappointment, the Mariners lost. It really shouldn't have been surprising, though.
After the game, the boys talked sport over the lasagna and garlic bread. Jake observed Bella as she picked at her food. "Come on, Bells, you need to eat something," he encouraged her in a quiet whisper.
Bella tried to eat more, but the nerves and probably the hormones were making her feel ill.
When Bella produced dessert, homemade berry cobbler, Charlie squinted at her and eyes her suspiciously. "You tryin' to butter me up, Bells?"
Bella chuckled nervously, not making eye contact.
Charlie put down his spoon. "What's going on?"
Bella looked at Jake for support. He reached for her hand under the table and squeezed it. Bella reached into her back pocket with her other hand, pulled the sonogram out, and placed it in the middle of the table.
The two older men on the other side of the table leaned in closer to get a look at the grainy picture.
Their reactions couldn't have been more different. First, Charlie went bright pink, then red as he held his breath. Billy smiled proudly. "Twins?" he asked excitedly.
Bella and Jake nodded.
"TWINS?!" Charlie yelled, before standing up, his chair loudly scraping along the floor. His hand automatically reached for his hip where his gun usually would be. The action was not lost on anyone in the room.
"Charlie…" Jake tried to say something but was cut off.
Charlie pointed at him with an accusing finger, "you promised me that this wouldn't happen. This was one of the two conditions of you staying in my house. I told you I don't want to be a grandfather this young."
He turned his glare on Bella now, "how could you be this irresponsible? I thought you were more mature than this." He started pacing behind the chairs.
"Charlie!" Billy yelled at his friend. "You need to calm down."
"How can you be so calm? Your boy is only sixteen, he hasn't finished school. They aren't married. They don't have a house. Their cars are both unsuitable for carrying kids, let alone two!"
Bella knew that this was the response they would get. It was what she had been thinking pretty much since the moment they suspected she was pregnant. Still, hearing it out loud made it so much worse.
Before she knew it, Jake had pulled her onto his lap for the second time that day. She was crying tears into his shirt.
"We are very aware of all those issues and everything else that is against us," Jake said firmly. "But three days ago, we were under the impression that we could never have children. So to us, it may be complicated, but it is also a miracle. We will be good parents, and we will do this together, with or without our support."
Charlie slowed his pacing and stood behind his chair. "Who told you you couldn't have kids?"
"I did," Billy admitted. "The council and me. It was part of the fake imprint. I'm guessing that you guys didn't use any protection?"
Jake shook his head.
"Isabella," Charlie said sternly, using her full name for the first time in years. "We are leaving. Alone."
Bella cringed at her father's tone, and Jake pulled her in tighter. "Dad, I'm not going anywhere without Jake."
"You most certainly are."
"Charlie," Billy tried to reason with his friend. "I tried to separate them, and you saw what happened. It will be even worse now they are expecting. There is no way either of us stands a chance at keeping them apart." Billy looked over at his son, fiercely protecting his imprint. "Not that I want to anyway. They need to be together."
"I don't believe this," Charlie muttered before collecting his jacket heading for the front door.
"Dad, please?" Bella called out to no avail.
The front slammed shut, and Bella flinched. Then, they all heard the cruiser engine start-up and the tires crunch loudly on the gravel drive before there was silence.
