Change of Plans

Chapter IX

Bella sat anxiously in her last period class, watching the clock tick closer to the end of the school day. She really wanted to leave as soon as possible, immediately if she could help it. Unfortunately, she wasn't sure about being able to shake Edward. Then again, she may not be able to because Alice would see her trying to do so, and it didn't help that Edward was her ride to school that morning. Luckily, she had foreseen this possibility, and had texted Jacob while at lunch with Angela. She asked him to pick her up from school, as well as stating she needed to talk to him. And luckily for her, Jacob had replied in agreement.

Soon the bell rang, signaling the end of class, and Bella all but bolted out of the classroom with the rest of her class, leaving Edward behind. However, Edward caught up to her halfway down the hallway, grabbing her by her backpack and pulling her back. Sighing in annoyance, Bella turned to face the vampire and asked, "What?"

Edward frowned down at her before saying, "I'm taking you to Carlisle now. I've already called him during lunch and told him that we would meet him at our house for a consultation."

"Consultation? For what?"

"To remove that dog's puppy."

Chocolate brown eyes widened in shock before glaring into amber eyes, causing Edward to frown further. "You will do no such thing. And that isn't your right. Tell Carlisle I'm not coming and will never come for a consultation concerning that."

Edward frowned as the brunette as she turned and walked away from him towards the exit, her pace a faster than usual, as if she was trying to get away from him. Frowning further, he caught up with her saying, "Bella, we need to do something about this."

"There's nothing to be done, Edward; nothing to discuss."

Bella quickly cut in front of a student leaving, nearly dashing outside of the school. As soon as she stepped outside, she was elated to find Jacob waiting for her, casually leaning against his motorcycle as he waited for her. Smiling, she moved to head down the stairs towards him, but was stopped by Edward who grabbed her arm and jerked her back. She nearly stumbled on the steps, before catching her footing. Looking up at him she asked annoyed, "What is wrong with you? Are you trying to kill me?"

"You're not going anywhere with him, Bella," Edward told her with an edge of finality in his voice, glaring at her before moving the glare to Jacob.

Jacob, who had moved from his motorcycle and up the steps of the school towards them, scowled at Edward and said, "Bella can go with whoever, do whatever, and go wherever she damn well pleases. You don't control her, you stuck up, controlling prick."

The confrontation between the two, handsome young men was drawing the attention of others, everyone whispering to one another about two hot guys fighting over Bella Swan. The attention being drawn wasn't quite what Edward was wanting, and he couldn't control the situation like he wanted to with others watching. Damn Jacob Black! His grip tightening on Bella's arm, the action making her wince, he hissed at her, "You're not going!"

"Let Bella decide that," Jacob said, glaring at the bloodsucker challengingly.

Bella looked between the two of them briefly before her eyes settled on Jacob. Knowing this was her chance at getting away—hell, what she had been wanting since lunchtime—Bella said, "I'm going with Jacob."

"Bella!" Edward exclaimed. "No!"

"Yes."

"I said no!"

Jacob took hold of Bella's free hand and shoved the leech back, forcing him to let go of Bella since they were in front of a crowd of human onlookers. He then looked down at his best friend and smiled saying, "Let's go, Bells."

Bella smiled and nodded gratefully, fully aware of Edward's seething glare as she left hand in hand with Jacob, as well as aware of the shocked expressions of the crowd of teenagers. She knew word was going to spread fast of her ditching Edward and leaving on the arm—and motorcycle—of another handsome man. And yes, they would say man because that is what Jacob looked like, no longer like a teenager. And for once, Bella didn't care what they thought about her. She knew some would call her a cheater, others would call her lucky for nabbing another hot guy; she'd probably be called some sort of whore. But she did not care what they thought. All that mattered to her was that she was where she wanted to be, and that was with Jacob and away from Edward.

She climbed onto the back of Jacob's motorcycle with him, wrapping her arms around his strong middle and held tightly as he revved up the engine and took off away from the school, leaving Edward, the student body, and Forks High behind. As they did, she did briefly see Angela standing with Ben, the bespectacled girl smiling encouragingly and giving her thumbs up. The further they got away from the high school, and Forks altogether, the more Bella relaxed until she was contently leaning against Jacob's back, her face pressed against his strong shoulder blade. Her eyes were closed as they drove, her senses taking in the smell of nature and the sound of birds chirping over the sound of the engine, letting her know they had crossed over into La Push.

Before long, Jacob slowed down and stopped, cutting off the motorcycle saying, "Alright, we're here."

The brunette didn't answer, still leaning against Jacob with her eyes closed, arms still wrapped around his waist. Jacob looked back at her and gently patted her hands saying, "Bells?"

Bella opened her eyes and saw that they were at First Beach before looking up at Jacob. Smiling, she hugged him from behind once again saying, "Thanks for coming to get me."

"No problem." Jacob smiled as she hugged him, though he couldn't hug her proper in return. That was alright, though. He had time to hug her later.

The two of them got off the motorcycle and Bella waited for him to prop it up before they walked onto the beach together, heading to the old, washed out log in silence. They soon reached it and sat on it, still sitting in silence for a bit, listening to the waves crashing onto the shore. Some more moments of silence passed between them before Jacob spoke up asking, "So, what did you want to talk to me about?"

Bella looked up at him and answered, "The baby."

"What about it?"

"I want to talk with you about what you want concerning the baby."

Jacob frowned. "I already told you that I'd support you in whatever decision you made concerning the baby, Bella."

Shaking her head, Bella said with a bit of stress in her voice, "No, I want to know what you want for and concerning the baby. I've been thinking selfishly and didn't even consider what you may think. Don't worry about me and what I want. What is it that you want?"

Dark brown eyes looked down at her for a moment before looking down at the sand between his feet. He was silent for a moment before saying, "Honestly, I want to keep the baby, Bella. I want the chance to be a dad to this baby. I know that I never imagined becoming a father at sixteen, but I want to be able to raise and be there for my child, just like Billy has been for me all my life. I understand a lot is going on right now, but this baby could be the one good thing to happen amid all that is happening, and I don't want that opportunity to be taken from me."

Bella stared up at him following his words, Jacob still looking down at the ground. She opened her mouth to speak, but Jacob looked up at her and continued speaking. "But I will support you if you decide you don't want to keep the baby after it's born. Don't think I won't, Bells."

She nodded slowly and looked down into her lap, Jacob's words rolling around in her head. He sounded so sincere about it, and she knew he was. Jacob had no reason to not be ungenuine about this. He just didn't have it in him to try and deceive her, not like Edward did. Still, she couldn't help but bring up what Jared told her about their baby having Alpha blood.

"What about the baby being a future Alpha? Or having Alpha blood like you do?" Bella asked. "Jared said it would pretty much be royalty, like you."

Jacob made a face before shaking his head. "I don't care about that. And if anything, I hope that our baby will have a normal life, not at all like the one you and I are living right now. But, all in all, I want this baby, even if you don't. But I will support you in whatever decision you make. The one thing I know for sure right now, is that any decision concerning the baby, they be made only by you and me. No one else interfering, ignoring everyone else. Just you and me, okay? Just Jake and Bells."

Bella smiled at that, him saying 'Jake and Bells'. That was what they were, who they were, but only with one another. When it was Jake and Bells, there were no worries or secrets between them, and she missed having that, especially now. She missed being Jake and Bells; she wanted to have that again. Leaning against his shoulder, she said softly, "I would like that, too."

Wrapping his arm around her, Jacob held her close, leaning his own head against hers. They were silent for a moment more before he asked, "Is it safe to say that your leech won't have a say concerning our child?"

Nodding, she answered, "Yes, it is. I'm not letting Edward control or dictate my decisions any longer."

And Bella meant that. Not just in concerns to her baby, but in general. She still didn't know if the love between her and Edward was real or not anymore, but she could finally see and realize that the vampire was controlling, and very controlling of her. If she thought about it, he always had been. He had been the ones pulling the strings in every aspect of her life, and she was too blind to see it. But she could see it now, and she wasn't going to let him control her any longer. And if he continued to try, then she would break things off for good.

She knew a lot had happened in the past two days—at least, it felt like it—but she had gotten some clarity during that time. She now realized that she couldn't keep thinking about herself, and only herself; she had to think about others, specifically those around her. If she had to think about herself, then she needed to think of and focus only on her own self-interests. She had to work through her plans on her own for the betterment of herself. And as those thoughts went through her brain, Bella found that those plans just may no longer involve Edward.
