Hello faithful American readers and all the other readers from countries in the world that are not as good as the US of A the greatest country in the world. I am Christopher Smith but you may know me as Peacemaker; I am a great American hero who loves peace so much that I am willing to fight for it! I am the best goddamn superhero in this entire world, you don't see Superman on a quest for peace using his powers to tell the countries of the world to stop all conflict or else he would use his great power to force them. You don't see the nut from Gotham showing criminals no mercy anymore and you don't see that big red cheesecake from Philadelphia who doesn't even seem to have a goddamn codename doing what I do!
Well to make a long and mostly classified story short I have been in the hospital for some time, only now have I been able to type something up on this laptop I have been provided by my government liaisons. My employer has relented on me being allowed to share my views on movies and TV shows online to show my loyal fans that I am just like them!
Plus to my good friends Robert and Cleo if you happen to be reading this, I assure you that I have no hard feelings and hope we can bury the hatchet if we ever meet again!
Anyway I have been doing a lot of binging on streaming services and videos online not that I have much recourse but I have also have VHS tapes (the precursor to DVDs to my younger audience), DVDs and Blu-Rays that I have been watching so I thought I could give my thoughts on this too.
Since Superheroes are popular I thought that I would start with the movie that started what is now known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe Iron Man, remember when everyone in the public thought super powers were limited to Comic Books and the movies? Those were the days.
Anyway I might end up doing all the other MCU movies and perhaps the TV shows. Shouldn't too bad since there are only like over 20 movies so far and counting.
Okay the movie is about Tony Stark a goddamn American hero and child prodigy who inherited his father's weapons designing business and made it all that much better. You know how Jim Carrey in that video game movie with the talking CGI hedgehog and how said he was spitting out formulas when that Westworld guy was spitting out formula, well Tony Stark was probably like that.
He is showing off his new Jericho Missile to our troops while alienating newer and younger viewers watching for the first time with a Myspace reference when he is attacked by Ten Rings terrorists using stuff that he made. A knock against the movie for not showing more of our troops kicking foreign terrorist ass.
So he befriends another captured scientist who puts a power source in his heart to save his life and helps him build an Iron Giant cosplay so that he could escape returning to the US and shows that he is an American by wanting a cheeseburger from Burger King.
Then he loses points with me by going all soft and wimpy by shutting down all weapons manufacturing to the dismay of his mentor Stane who points out what are they going to make now that he shut down the weapons. Stark won't even let him try to examine his new heart power source in order to manufacture.
Stark builds new versions of his suit to become a hero while Stane is getting him kicked out of his own company, then it turns out that he hired the Ten Rings to kill him but they didn't know it was Stark so they wanted more money as they made him build more weapons for him. Stane betrays him and takes the Iron Giant cosplay back to build a bigger prototype; his scientist can't replicate the heart power source so he creates a meme with his yelling.
Stane steals the power source from Stark to leave him for dead but Pepper gets a new version to replace it, Stark and Stane play the most unfair game of Rock Em Sock Em Robots ever with Stane's being way big but Stark ends up winning but exploiting his bigger power source killing Stane. Then in the press conference Stark reveals that he is Iron Man and in the first of a big tradition, after the credits Samuel L Jackson approaches Stark to tell him about the Avengers Initiative.
Anyway despite Stark being a wimp and things that have shown the age (besides the Myspace reference the CGI isn't as good as it would later be); it's still a pretty decent and good movie. Some may call it about Stark reinventing himself and stuff like that but boring! We get to see him kick terrorist ass and blow up planes and stuff like that! Plus I can't fault a Superhero who wears red but if he replaced the yellow with blue then it would be better.
The cast do a good job with RDJ being a fun charming guy who I would love to have a beer bash with (I had one recently with some friends). Terrence Howard plays another badass American military hero but when he looks at a suit and says 'next time baby'?
About that...
Anyway Coulson is here as a fan favourite to be but as a fan of the West Wing I approve.
I have read in the comics that Happy Hogan and Pepper got married; Happy here is played by the director Jon Favreau. I have suspicion that he casted himself as Happy for the chance he could get with Gwyneth Paltrow on camera. I have no way of proving this but if it's true then I have one thing to say to Mr Favreau:
You are a goddamn genius and I salute you!
Anyway comic nerds who really need to sleep with something and move out of their parents basement will not be happy that the Mandarin doesn't appear in this first movie but is referenced with the Ten Rings. Does it build up to something? Well we will get to it.
But Stark would have gotten his American hero points back if he fought a magic ring wielding Fu Manchu.
Plus other changes from the comics: Stane has a beard when he is bald and no hair in the comics, he is the head of a rival company instead of being a mentor to Stark and his armor is blue instead of silver. So thumbs down for comic accuracy if you care about that.
Plus Samuel L Jackson is technically accurate as Fury as in from the Ultimate comics as I have researched so does it count as comic accuracy if it's a different universe?
So all in all a strong start to this franchise as well as starting the movie off with a glorious celebration of our War on Terror and I will probably get to the other MCU movies and I will end with this in saying that this gets a recommendation from me.
This is Christopher Smith saying:
Peace Out!
