Chapter 2- No end or beginning
7 months later, New York City
The alarm beeped as her eyes opened, and she wanted to just lie back down and close her eyes to lose herself in the sweetness of her dreams.
But she knew waking up again after that would crush her, like it just had. Like it had every time she woke up.
With a little strain, she lifted herself off the bed and climbed out of it, finding her slippers as she staggered to the bathroom, which wasn't filthy but not in the best condition either.
That could be used to describe the entire apartment though, not that she cared much.
She put the paste on the brush and looked at herself as she brushed her teeth vigorously. Of course no matter how her teeth were, she didn't look too well.
Her eyes were still droopy, and had dark circles underneath them, with her hair unkempt, and her body a little bent rather than straight.
One might think it was due to just having woken up from sleep, but that was not true. This was how she always appeared now, due to not taking the utmost care of her own body's needs.
Not to mention her mind's needs.
Once the brushing was done, she rinsed her mouth, then took off her robe, putting it down, and after a few seconds, turned the shower on, stepping in as the water hit her face, making her a bit more aware of her surroundings than she was up until this point in the day.
So she washed herself, put soap, then washed it off along with the dirt, and came out of the shower, rubbing herself with the towel which she then wrapped around herself, and put her slippers back on.
Once outside, she took the towel off and put on a little uniform for work, which included a cap as well.
After that, she made herself a little breakfast and coffee, and just sat for a few minutes, as if waiting for it all to get cold.
But she was back to her senses before it went that far, and quickly ate the little breakfast she had, followed by gulping down the coffee, and then getting up, she picked up a small bag and walked out.
During all this time, not once did she comb her hair, which was the reason why her hair were always unkempt now.
This was one habit, there were various others which together led to her looking so unclean and shabby the whole time. Pretty much 24/7.
And frankly, Paige Matthews couldn't care about how she appeared to the people around her. Not one bit.
Paige eventually reached the place where she worked called 'Snacks 'N Wheels', and walked inside as the manager greeted. "Good morning Paige."
"Good morning Mr. Munson", Paige greeted back, then wordlessly walked to the counter and picked up a little register, walking to the two customers who happened to be there, an old couple.
"What can I get for you?" She asked in the most polite tone she could muster.
"Fries and nachos for both of us", the man said as Paige noted it down.
"All right."
With that, she walked back inside to the kitchen and said. "2 plates of fries and nachos!"
"On it!"
It took about a little time, but eventually it was ready as Paige got the order and walked to the table, putting the plate down. "Here you go."
"Thank you", the woman said to Paige with a smile, which she didn't return, and she walked back to the counter before seeing two guys sitting down, one of whom had a look she really didn't like.
"What can I get for you?" Paige inquired again, trying to sound polite.
"Little burger with cheese", the first guy said.
"Same for me", the other added.
"Sure", Paige noted it down and turned when the guy whose look she really didn't like smacked her on the behind, making her freeze for a second.
Then she walked off as if nothing had happened, but the other guy then said to that one. "What's wrong with you, man?"
"What?" The first guy said. "Just having a little-"
"If a cop was here, would you still call it fun? Or even do it?" The second one asked and the first one now shut up as he started fuming instead.
"When she comes back, say you're sorry", the second guy said as the first one sighed.
Paige returned a few minutes later with burgers for them both as the first guy pretty much snatched it from her hands and said in the most insincere tone one had ever heard. "I'm sorry."
Paige did not respond and just walked back to the kitchen as the first one told the second. "Chicks, I like 'em just like that, when they know their place."
"I really have no idea what's wrong with you", the other one told him, shaking his head, deciding he didn't want to be friends with this guy anymore.
While bad comments to the opposite sex he could take, this kind of behavior was harassment and he didn't want to do anything with someone who thought it appropriate.
At night, Paige simply walked back to the direction of her home, taking her cap off now as she remembered the harassment she had experienced but done nothing about.
As she walked, she heard sounds of struggling from the alley nearby and turned to see a guy struggling against a mugger who suddenly took out a knife.
"Come on man!" The guy begged. "Let me-"
"Give me everything!" The mugger demanded as the guy now took out his wallet which was snatched from him.
Paige started taking a step towards them, then froze, and stepped back, before turning to the footpath and carrying on, feeling her chest getting slightly heavier, but it was nothing in comparison to that day.
Eventually, she reached home, locked the door, and changed back into her nightgown while preparing food, and she turned the TV on for background noise.
"Today the remains of the Dynamic Airlines were found in the remains of the Pacific. This plane crashed when its pilot was taken out by the Decimation and so the plane crashed, killing ab-"
Paige shut the TV off, breathing fast to the point of panting, the mention of the Decimation bringing it all back as she staggered back and collapsed onto the ground, shaking, and some tears rolled down her cheeks.
It was like that for at least 10 minutes. Her dinner had overcooked by the time she stood back up. And this was one of the less bad ones she experienced.
She sighed, deciding to just go to sleep without anything instead of taking the trouble to cook again, and shutting the lights off, brushed her teeth a second time, then fell onto the bed.
But she did not sleep. She law awake for at least 2 hours, unmoving, looking at the ceiling, before darkness finally took her.
Well, this is probably the first time I've written someone going through a monotonous routine instead of just getting to the exciting stuff, but Paige's mental state and lifestyle is important for this story.
If she seems OOC, remember, this is a Paige who has lost everyone she cared about a second time, with no hope of getting them back, so this is the effect of all of that.
She is depressed and emotionless, and there are all of those panic attacks in there too.
Anyway, see you all next time with another chapter.
