Chapter 11- Scott Lang
4 years later
A therapy session was taking place inside with Steve Rogers, Paige Matthews and seven other people.
A guy called Joe broke the ice. "So I, uh... Went on a date the other day. It's the first time in five years, you know? I'm sitting there at dinner... I didn't even know what to talk about."
Steve asked. "What did you talk about?"
Joe shrugged. "Same old crap, you know? How things have changed, and... my job, his job... How much we miss the Mets. And then things get quiet... He cried as they were serving the salads."
Another guy called Jim asked Joe. "What about you?"
Joe revealed. "I cried... just before dessert. But I'm seeing him again tomorrow, so..."
"That's a good thing", Paige told Joe. "At least you are trying, baby steps, they matter the most."
Steve nodded and tried to comfort as well as encourage them all.
"Yeah, Paige's right, what you did, that's great. You did the hardest part. You took the jump, you didn't know where you were gonna come down. And that's it. That's those little brave baby steps we gotta take. To try and become whole again, try and find purpose. I went in the ice in '45 right after I met a woman I could have had something with. Woke up 70 years later, now I have something with someone else." Steve and Paige exchanged a loving smile before Steve told the rest. "You gotta move on. Gotta move on. The world is in our hands. It's left to us guys, and we got to do something with it. Otherwise... Thanos should have killed all of us."
Paige suddenly grasped her head, getting a premonition.
A rat scurried around a machine on a van, suddenly activating it.
"Paige, you okay?" Steve inquired.
Paige rubbed her head and shook it. "I…I think so."
Avengers Compound
Natasha was cutting the two bread with peanut butter filling into a couple of triangles, now having red, long hair, over-coloring her blonde streaks. She was in a holographic meeting with Matt, Mack, Rocket and Nebula, Rhodes, Okoye and Carol. Carol now had a tomboyish haircut too.
Rocket told Natasha. "Yeah, we boarded that highly suspect warship Danvers pinged."
Nebula revealed. "It was an infectious garbage scowl."
"So, thanks for the hot tip." Rocket turned to Danvers and replied back with a smirk.
"Well, you were closer." Carol defended herself lamely.
Rocket nodded. "Yeah. And now we smell like garbage."
Natasha turned to Okoye. "You get a reading on those tremors?"
Okoye said. "It was a mild subduction under the African plate."
Natasha asked. "Do we have a visual? How are we handling it?"
Okoye told her. "Nat, it's an earthquake under the ocean. We handle it by not handling it."
Natasha sighed, then turned to Carol. "Carol, are we seeing you here next month?"
Carol shook her head. "Not likely."
Rocket quipped. "What, you gonna get another haircut?"
Carol was irritated. "Listen fur-face, I'm covering a lot of territory. The things that are happening on Earth, are happening everywhere, on thousands of planets."
Rocket murmured to himself. "All right, all right, that's a good point. That's a good point."
Carol said. "So you might not see me for a long time."
"Matt, what about you?" Natasha then asked him.
"Heard some weird kind of drug is being bought and sold in the underworld's market", Matt said. "Some kind of enhancement drug."
"What are you doing about it?" Natasha asked.
"Trying to end it, if anything wrong happens, I'll let you know", Matt assured.
Natasha nodded. "Alright. Uh, well. This channel is always active. So, if anything goes sideways... anyone's making trouble where they shouldn't... comes through me."
Okoye agreed in her language.
"Okay", Rocket said too.
"All right", Natasha said as they started cutting their calls one by one.
"Good luck", Carol said to Rhodes before cutting her call.
Natasha sighed as she noticed that Mack and Rhodes were now still online.
"Where are you?" Natasha asked Rhodes.
"Mexico", Rhodes revealed. "The Federales found a room full of bodies a while ago. Looks like a bunch of cartel guys. Never even had the chance to get their guns off."
"It's probably a rival gang", Natasha told him.
"Except it isn't." Realization hit Natasha's face. "It's definitely Barton. What he's done here, what he's been doing for the last few months... I mean, the scene that he left..."
Nat started to show signs of sadness as she gradually teared up. "I gotta tell you, there's a part of me that doesn't even want to find him."
In an abrupt moment of silence, she tried to chew her tears and emotional feelings as she ate a sandwich.
"Will you find out where he's going next?" She asked.
"He doesn't need to", Mack said as she turned to him. "My team tried to follow his trail, he was in LA a while ago."
Natasha listened as Mack continued talking.
"Last night, I found the entire Los Huesos cartel in pieces. I've seen a lot of bad, but this, this was something else."
Natasha nodded, looking she was barely controlling herself.
"We think he's already out of LA though", Mack added.
"Just find him", Natasha said and they nodded before cutting their calls.
Natasha started to cry as she tried to hold back her tears miserably.
"You know I'd offer to cook you dinner but you seem pretty miserable already."
Out of nowhere, Steve and Paige slumped over a bookshelf, in the same mood as they were in the therapy session, as Natasha wiped off the tears off her face.
"You to here to do your laundry?" She asked.
"And to see a friend", Paige added.
Natasha told them. "Clearly, your friend is fine."
Steve revealed to her. "You know we saw a pod of whales when I was coming up the bridge."
"In the Hudson?"
Steve pointed out. "There's fewer ships, cleaner water."
"You know, if you're about to tell me to look on the bright side. Um... I'm about you to hit you in the head with a peanut butter sandwich." Natasha jokingly smiled, as Rogers did the same.
"Sorry. Force of habit." Steve threw his jacket, then sat down on another chair, opposite Natasha, with Paige sitting next to him. "You know, I keep telling everybody they should move on and... grow. Some do. But not us."
"We can't", Paige told Steve as they exchanged a look. "It's, it's just not possible with all we've seen and been through, you know?"
Natasha asked. "If I move on, who does this?"
"Maybe it doesn't need to be done."
Natasha was deep in her thoughts. "I used to have nothing. And then I got this. This job... this family. And I was... I was better because of it. And even though... they're gone... I'm still trying to be better."
Steve quipped. "I think we all need to get a life."
Natasha smiled. "You two first."
The double meaning was lost on the couple as Natasha sighed.
"You know, I got a premonition today, of a rat on a machine", Paige then said to the two.
"Really? Why?" Steve asked.
"I've no idea", Paige shook her head. "But anyway, I was thinking of doing something today."
"What?" Natasha asked.
"Contact my family in the afterlife", Paige revealed, surprising them both. "Just contact."
"You sure about this?" Steve asked her.
"When I lost them, I didn't want to do it", Paige said with a sigh. "Because I could talk to them, but never be with them, so it would be like losing them all over again. But now I realize I want to speak to them one last time."
"Whatever you choose, I'm with you", Steve assured Paige as they held hands.
A camera footage popped up in front of them, showing a man with a van behind him.
"Oh! Hi. Hi! Is anyone home? This is Scott Lang. We met a few years ago, at the airport? In Germany? I got really big, and I had my mask on. You wouldn't recognize me."
"That's the van!" Paige recognized it in surprise from her premonition, then recognized the guy too. "That's...Scott Lang!"
"You know him?" Steve asked in surprise.
"Met him a few times when I was a social worker", Paige confessed.
Steve stood up in shock. "Is this an old message?"
Natasha also stood up alongside him. "It's the front gate."
"Ant-Man? Ant-Man, I know you know that. I need to talk to you guys."
Scott was inside the Avengers Compound, pacing worriedly in front of Steve, Paige and Natasha.
Steve inquired kindly. "Scott. Are you okay?"
"Yeah. I'm fine", Scott struggled to ask about something. He finally blurted it out. "Have you ever studied Quantum Physics?"
"Nope, never", Paige confessed.
"Good to see you again", Scott randomly said to Paige. "Good ol' days, I miss 'em. Thanks for the help."
"Yeah, good ol' days", Paige smiled wistfully.
Natasha quipped. "For Quantum Physics, only to make conversation."
Scott then started explaining to the three of them. "Alright. So... five years ago, right before Thanos, I was in a place called the Quantum Realm. The Quantum Realm is like its own microscopic universe. To get in there, you have to be incredibly small. Hope, she's my... She was my..." Scott was struggling to not mention Hope without completely losing it. "She was supposed to pull me out. And then Thanos happened, and I got stuck in there."
"Oh!" Paige said, realizing how bad it was for him.
Natasha agreed and said in sympathy. "I'm sorry. That must've been a very long five years."
"Yeah, but that's just it. It wasn't. For me, it was five hours." Steve, Paige and Nat shared a quick and bewildered glance. "See, the rules of the Quantum Realm aren't like they are up here. Everything is unpredictable." He saw the peanut butter sandwich. "Is that anybody's sandwich? I'm starving." Scott strode over to pick up Natasha's sandwich, and bit into it.
Steve tried to get him to focus. "Scott, what are you talking about?"
Scott chewed and explained to the three of them. "What I'm saying is, time works differently in the Quantum Realm. The only problem is right now, we don't have a way to navigate it. But what if we did? I can't stop thinking about it. What if, we could somehow control the chaos, and we could navigate it? What if there was a way to enter the Quantum Realm at a certain point in time but then exit at another point in time? Like... Like before Thanos."
Paige's eyes widened in realization as Steve asked. "Wait, are you talking about a time machine?"
"No. No, of course not. No, not a time machine. It's more like a... Yeah, a time machine. I know it's crazy. But I can't stop thinking about it. There's gotta be some way... There's gotta be...some w... it's crazy."
"Time travel is a thing, I know, Piper did it once, remember?" Paige asked Steve and Natasha, having told them of it, and they nodded, as Scott was shocked.
"It is?" He asked.
"Yes, but that was due to magic and a Cupid's ring."
"Magic and a Cupid's…what, Cupids are real?"
"Anyway, the Ring was dusted with Coop, but time travel is real", Paige told Scott. "So nothing's crazy."
"Right", Scott nodded while shaking his head, then asked. "Who do we talk to about this then?"
Tony Stark was playing with his daughter Morgan Stark, and then he carried her back into the house when a black Audi pulled up, coming to a stop a few meters away.
Steve, Natasha, Paige and Scott got out of the car. Tony sighed. He was not looking forward to the discussion about to take place.
Scott had explained it all to Tony and started. "Now, we know what it sounds like..."
Steve added. "Tony, after everything you've seen, is anything really impossible?"
Tony simply asked them. "Quantum fluctuation messes with the Planck Scale, which then triggers the Deutsch Proposition. Can we agree on that?"
Scott, Steve, Paige and Natasha all looked puzzled. Science was barely any of their fields, and Scott's science field wasn't close to any of this.
"Well, time travel has happened", Paige raised her hand. "By-"
"By magic", Tony pointed out to her. "Wouldn't be a believer if I didn't see it, but this type of it is different from what you've experienced."
Tony gave a drink to Steve as he said. "Thank you."
Tony then explained. "What I said before, in Layman's terms, it means you're not coming home."
Scott reminded. "I did."
Tony shook his head. "No, you accidentally survived. It's a billion to one cosmic fluke. And now you wanna pull off a... What do you call it?"
Scott tried to hide his pride. "A time heist?"
"Yeah, a time heist. Of course, why didn't we think of this before? Oh, because it's laughable? Because it's a pipedream?"
"Okay, I get that this version of time travel is different from ours, but the fact that it exists doesn't make it a pipe dream", Paige pointed out. "Come on, listen!"
Scott added. "The Stones are in the past. We can go back and get them."
Natasha shrugged. "We can snap our own fingers. We can bring everyone back."
Tony pointed out. "Or screw it up worse than he already has, right?"
Steve replied. "I don't believe we would."
"How can we make it worse than this?" Paige asked, gesturing everywhere.
Tony quipped. "Gotta say, sometimes I miss that giddy optimism. And now you have it double", Tony looked between Steve and Paige. "However, high hopes won't help if there's no logical, tangible way for me to safely execute said time heist. I believe the most likely outcome would be our collective demise."
Scott argued. "Not if we strictly follow the rules of time travel. That means no talking to our past selves, no betting on sporting events –"
"I'm gonna stop you right there, Scott. Are you seriously telling me that your plan to save the universe is based on Back To The Future?"
Scott was embarrassed. "No."
"Good. You had me worried there. 'Cause that'd be horse shit. That's not how quantum physics works."
"Besides, we have interacted sort of like that before", Paige said.
Natasha told Tony. "Tony... We have to take a stand."
Tony reminded her. "We did stand. And yet, here we are."
Scott tried to reason. "I know you got a lot on the line. You got a wife, a daughter. But I lost someone very important to me. A lot of people did." Paige winced, her family's deaths flashing through her mind again as Scott's voice got louder, selling his desperation. "And now, now we have a chance to bring her back. To bring everyone back. And you're telling me that won't even..."
"That's right, Scott, I won't even. I got a kid." Morgan ran to her dad, who picked her up.
"Mommy told me to come and save you."
"Good job. I'm saved", Tony turned to face Steve, Natasha, Paige and Scott. "I wish you'd come here to ask me something else. Anything else. Honestly, I... I missed you guys, and I like you too", Tony said Paige. "It was... Oh, and table's set for six."
Steve assured him. "Tony, I get it. And I'm happy for you, I really am."
"So am I", Tony said, looking between Steve and Paige as they exchanged a nod.
Steve then added. "But this is a second chance."
Tony gestured to Morgan. "I got my second chance right here, Cap. I can't roll the dice again. If you don't talk shop, you can stay for lunch."
He walked inside as Steve, Natasha, Paige and Scott walked back to their car outside Tony's house.
Natasha said about Tony. "He's scared."
Steve sighed. "He's not wrong."
"But it was done before without anything too bad", Paige reminded. "Why won't he listen?"
"Because he wasn't there", Natasha pointed out.
Scott then asked. "Yeah, but I mean, what are we gonna do? We need him. What, are we gonna stop?"
Steve wasn't going to give up. "No, I wanna do it right. We're gonna need a really big brain."
Scott was incredulous as he pointed to Tony's house. "Bigger than his?"
They ended up approaching Bruce, who had managed to find a proper balance between himself and Hulk and both sides had fair control in both forms.
Now in the lab in the Avengers Compound, Bruce was fiddling with buttons on a panel. Scott was in his Ant-Man costume in front of his van, with the back open to show the Quantum Tunnel. Nat, Paige and Steve were beside Bruce.
Bruce noted. "Okay, here we go. Time travel test number one. Scott, fire up the uhhh... the van thing." Scott opened it up.
Steve told him. "Breakers are set, emergency generators are on standby."
"Good. 'Cause if we blow the grid, I don't wanna lose Tiny here in the 1950's."
Scott, Nat, Paige and Cap gave Bruce a panicked look as Scott asked. "Excuse me?"
Natasha assured. "He's kidding." She said in a hushed tone to Bruce. "You can't say things like that!"
Bruce sighed. "Just... It was a bad joke."
Paige asked Bruce. "You were joking, right?"
"No idea, unlike your magical time travel, this has never been tried", Bruce told Paige before giving Scott a thumbs-up. "We're good! Get your helmet on, Scott. I'm gonna send you back a week, let you walk around for an hour, then bring you back in 10 seconds. Makes sense?"
"Perfectly not confusing."
Steve assured. "Good luck, Scott. You got this."
Scott was flattered. "You're right. I do, Captain America." Bruce pressed a button, and Scott disappeared into the Quantum Tunnel. "On the count of three. 3... 2... 1!" Bruce pressed a button, and someone in the Ant-Man suit came back. A teenager appeared out of it.
Teen Scott asked. "Uh, guys? This...this doesn't feel right."
Steve asked. "What is this?"
"Are you Scott?" Paige asked.
"Yes its Scott!" Teen Scott snapped.
"Oh! Right!" Paige realized.
Bruce pushed some buttons as Teen Scott got sucked in back into the quantum tunnel, and then appeared an old man in the Ant-Man suit.
Old Scott moaned. "Ow! My back!"
Steve asked. "What is this?"
Bruce sighed. "Can I get a little space here?"
"Just bring him back!" Paige said.
"I'm working on it!" He tapped the side of the button pad, trying to pull back Scott. After a moment, another person appeared in front of them. This time, it was a baby in the Ant-Man suit.
Steve noted. "It's a baby."
"It's Scott."
"As a baby!"
"He's cute", Paige commented.
"Not the point", Natasha told her.
"He'll grow."
"Bring Scott back!"
Bruce motioned to Natasha. "When I say kill the power, kill the power."
"Oh my god." Natasha rapidly walked to the generator.
"And... Kill it!" Nat pulled down a lever, and everything shut down.
Scott, the normal Scott, got spewed back out again.
"Somebody peed my pants."
Natasha sighed in relief. "Oh thank god."
"But I don't know if it was "baby" me or "old" me...Or just "me" me."
"Well, this sucks", Paige told Bruce.
"What? Really?"
Steve said nothing. He simply shook his head and walked away, outside, staring at the floor, deep in thought. He looked beat, the only possibility of victory now not an opportunity.
He looked up as a deafening noise broke the silence in the distance. As he looked, he saw an Audi R8 speeding towards the entrance.
The car pulled over to Cap, but went a bit too far, then reversed to Cap. Tony rolled down the window and looked at Cap.
"Why the long face? Let me guess: He turned into a baby."
"Among other things, yeah", Steve got to business. "What are you doing here?"
Tony got out of the car, and walked around to the back, ignoring Steve's question. "That's the EPR Paradox. Instead of pushing Lang through time, you might've wound up pushing time through Lang. It's tricky. Dangerous. Somebody should've cautioned you against it."
Steve reminded. "You did."
"Oh, did I?" Tony acted like he did not; there was the Tony Steve knew. "Thank God I'm here. Regardless, I fixed it." He held up his right hand, with a device on it. "A fully functioning Time-Space GPS. I just want peace." Tony made peace sign with his fingers. "Turns out, resentment is corrosive, and I hate it."
"Me too."
Tony then made his point. "We got a shot at getting these stones, but I gotta tell you my priorities: Bring back what we lost? I hope, yes. Keep what I got? I have to, at all costs. And... maybe not die trying will be nice."
"Sounds like a deal." Steve reached out his hand to shake in the deal, in which Tony replied in the same way.
Tony then reached back into his trunk to pull something else out, Captain America's Shield. He made to give it to Steve, who hesitated.
"Tony..."
"Why? He made it for you", Tony reminded, now finally putting the past behind at last. "Plus, honestly I have to get it out of the garage before Morgan takes it sledding."
Steve fit his arm into the shield, now feeling complete once more. "Thank you, Tony."
Tony asked. "Will you keep that a little quiet? Didn't bring one for the whole team." He hesitated. "...We are getting the whole team, yeah?"
Steve assured him. "We're working on that right now."
And this is the end. Now I won't be covering everything. The scenes with the Time Heist planning won't be too different even with Paige added really, and she shall go with one of the teams, which one, not telling right now, but the other teams won't be covered because that would go the same as canon.
Bro Thor and Professor Hulk were Endgame's two weakest characters, so I made sure neither of them would happen.
Anyway, hope all enjoyed and see you all next time with another chapter.
