Chapter 12- A meeting
Heavens
Paige orbed into the Heavens, surprising the Elders by her presence. The plan had been made, they had decided where to go and which Infinity Stones to get from what time period.
The team was here too- Paige herself, Steve, Thor, Natasha, Tony, Clint, Bruce, Scott, Rhodes, Rocket and Nebula. Carol was still in Space, but all of them together would do it.
"Paige, what is it?" Sandra asked.
"We have a way to bring everyone back now, undo what was done", Paige told Sandra.
Sandra sighed and nodded. "We know, it is risky-"
"But its all we have", Paige pointed out. "Besides, the Grand Design was undone by Thanos' act, right?"
"Yes it was."
"Then we must undo it and restore it all", Paige told Sandra. "I'm here with a request."
"What?"
"The Power of the Gods, give them to me, please", Paige begged, shocking Sandra. "Not all of it, just the essence, so I can have the power and use it without turning into Athena."
"But why do you want it?" Sandra inquired.
"It's either all or nothing", Paige told Sandra. "And this is going to be risky, we need all we can get, so please, just do it, I will return the powers once its done."
Sandra looked like she was thinking, then she opened her eyes and said. "All right."
She opened a vault and said. "Take the powers."
The essence of the powers flowed into Paige as she closed her eyes, feeling empowered, then smiled gratefully. "Thank you Sandra."
"We may not have been too helping before, but this time we will", Sandra assured as Paige nodded and orbed away.
Avengers Compound
Steve, Thor, Paige, Natasha, Tony, Clint, Bruce, Scott, Rhodes, Rocket and Nebula all walked towards the Quantum Time Machine in a file, wearing similar Quantum Suits, though there were slight modifications for different people.
Then they stood around the machine as Steve said to them all. "All right. We have a plan. Six Stones, three teams. One shot."
They all looked at each other as Steve continued.
"Five years ago, we lost. All of us. We lost friends... We lost family..." Steve exchanged a look with Paige. "We lost a part of ourselves. Today, we have a chance to take it all back. You know your teams, you know your missions. Get the Stones, get them back. One round trip each. No mistakes. No do-overs. Most of us are going somewhere we know. But it doesn't mean we should know what to expect. Be careful. Look out for each other. This is the fight of our lives. And we're gonna win." Tony gave Steve a look. "Whatever it takes."
"Whatever it takes", Paige repeated.
Steve told them all. "Good luck."
Rocket referred to Steve's speaking. "He's pretty good at that."
"Right?" Scott looked excited.
"I hear stuff like that almost every day", Paige said with a smirk as Scott had mock jealousy.
Tony turned to Bruce. "All right. You heard the man. Stroke those keys, science bro."
Bruce did and said. "Tractors engaged."
Rocket addressed the shrunk Benatar in Clint's hand. "You promise to bring that back in one piece, right?"
Clint assured him. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. I'll do my best."
Rocket told him. "As promises go, that was pretty lame."
Steve and Paige shared a kiss as the former said. "Good luck."
"Good luck", Paige said to him too.
Natasha smiled excitedly and told Steve. "See you in a minute." They all shrank and entered the Quantum Realm, and they all split at different intervals, going to a different place at a different time in history.
In 2014, Rhodes got out of the Benatar as it landed.
"Alright. Bring it down low. Right on that line. That's it. Down, down."
They did and Paige, Natasha and Clint walked out as Clint asked. "Hey, can we hurry it up?"
Natasha told them. "Guys, chop-chop. Come on. We're on a clock."
"Yeah, it needs to be done fast because an Infinity Stone, many factions want it", Paige agreed there.
Nebula walked out of the ship, apparently having directed it to its next destination as Rhodes commented. "All that, is really helpful." He hugged Natasha. "Take care, okay?"
Natasha nodded. "Yeah."
Rhodes told them. "Take that Stone and come back. No messing around."
Clint tapped Rhodes' shoulder and assured him. "Hey. You got this."
Rhodes nodded and said. "Let's get it done. Yes, sir."
Natasha walked with Paige and Clint back into the ship and said. "See you back."
"Good luck, and get that Stone", Paige added.
Rhodes told them. "You guys watch each other's six."
Paige, Clint and Natasha looked back and just smiled.
"Yeah", Clint said as they walked back into the ship, and the hatch closed. The ship took off and sped out of the atmosphere of Morag.
Nebula told Rhodes. "The coordinates for Vormir are laid in. All they have to do is not fall out."
In the Benatar, Clint and Natasha were sitting at the front of the ship with Paige behind them.
The ship took a jump through space and sped up tremendously.
Clint commented. "It's a long way from Budapest." Natasha just laughed.
"Guys", Paige raised her hand. "Out of the loop here."
"Inside joke", Natasha told her as she and Clint continued laughing.
Eventually, the three of them stepped out into Vormir as Clint commented. "Under different circumstances, this would be totally awesome."
"Been to different Dimensions, planet is new", Paige quipped as she, Natasha and Clint started walking towards the mountain and climbed it.
Natasha told the other two. "I bet the raccoon didn't have to climb a mountain."
Clint pointed out. "Technically, he's not a raccoon, you know."
"Whatever. He eats garbage."
"Raccoon that talks and considers itself not a raccoon", Paige quipped as they shared a chuckle.
"Welcome."
Natasha drew her gun, Paige drew her trident and Clint drew his bow.
The figure appeared before them as Paige's eyes widened in shock.
"Paige, daughter of Samuel, Natasha, daughter of Ivan. Clint, son of Edith."
Natasha inquired. "Who are you?"
"That's Schmidt! The Red Skull!" Paige snarled as she raised her trident again.
"Ah, yes, I used to be once upon a time", Schmidt said as he hovered around them. "I desired the Stones, I was then sent here, made an eternal guide, to be so close to what I wanted but never have it, only guide others to it."
"Right, you expect us to believe it?" Natasha asked.
"I cannot harm you", Schmidt simply said.
"Well, I think it's a fitting punishment", Clint said with zero sympathy. "So what are you now?"
"Consider me a guide. To you, and to all who seek the Soul Stone."
"Right, then tell us where it is and we'll take it and go", Paige told Schmidt.
"If only it were that easy."
Red Skull lead Paige, Clint and Natasha to the cliff.
"What you seek lies in front of you... as does what you fear."
Natasha noted. "The Stone is down there."
Schmidt added. "For two of you. For the one... In order to take the Stone, you must lose that which you love. An everlasting exchange. A soul, for a soul."
Their eyes widened in horror as the implications hit.
Natasha was now sitting on a log with Paige pacing around, thinking, while Clint watched the Stonekeeper who looked at them for a bit.
"How's it going?" Clint asked before turning to Natasha. "Jesus...Maybe he's making this shit up."
Natasha shook her head. "No. I don't think so."
Clint inquired. "Why, 'cause he knows your Daddy's name?"
"I didn't", Natasha said sadly as Clint looked at her in sympathy. "Thanos left here with the Stone without his daughter. It's not a coincidence."
"Yeah."
"Whatever it takes."
"Whatever it takes."
"Whatever it takes", Paige suddenly looked up, a spark in her eyes.
"What is it?" Natasha asked.
"I have the Power of a Goddess, and my family is in the afterlife, what use is this power if I can't use it for something like this?" Paige asked them.
"Still not getting it", Clint told her.
"Well, my family has their powers even in the afterlife, I can Piper and Phoebe, we can use our powers to get the Stone somehow", Paige told the two of them. "I am sure between the three of us we can do something."
"Paige, are you sure about this?" Natasha asked her.
"I was going to meet them before the Heist idea anyway to talk, now I shall meet them to help resurrect them", Paige told Natasha and Clint, as they shared a look, then nodded at Paige.
"Fine, do what you have to", Natasha said.
"Good luck", Clint added.
"Yeah", Paige nodded before raising her hands as they glowed and she chanted.
"Power of the sisters rise
Course unseen across the skies
Come to us who call you near
Come to us and settle here.
Blood to blood, I summon thee
Blood to blood, return to me."
Lightning then cracked in the sky as smoke swirled around, and then appeared a figure, but to Paige's shock, it was neither Piper nor Phoebe.
"Hello little sister", Prue Halliwell greeted Paige, hovering in the air before landing with a smile. "Nice to meet you."
"Oh my God…" Paige trailed off, eyes wide, as her lips quivered. "Prue! You…."
"Yes, its me, Paige, I'm your sister", Prue said as Paige walked to her and hugged the sister she had never known in her whole life, shedding tears and sobbing into her shoulder as Prue kissed Paige's cheek and stroked her hair, comforting her.
"I…..I wish I could know you", Paige told Prue once she had stopped crying.
"Well, I've seen you, and I'm proud of the woman you are", Prue assured Paige, stroking her shoulder.
Natasha and Clint didn't comment. The latter was a bit confused but the former knew, as Paige had talked about Prue to her and Steve too, the sister she had looked up to, but never known due to her untimely death.
"I am not like you though, you're the Super Witch, Wicca Wonder", Paige told Prue who chuckled.
"Maybe, but you are special too, Paige, all three of you", Prue assured Paige, smiling at her. "And I never stopped watching over any of you. I wanted to come visit but…"
"It would prevent Piper and Phoebe from moving on", Paige finished and Prue nodded.
"Yeah."
"Why didn't Piper and Phoebe come though?" Paige then inquired.
"When Thanos snapped his fingers, the dead souls did not go to the afterlife, they were trapped in the Soul Stone of that time period, and when he destroyed the Stones, the souls were all erased", Prue revealed, making Paige cover her mouth in horror as Natasha and Clint exchanged a shocked look.
"But they can be brought back, right?" Paige asked. "If we undo it-"
"Yes, all of them can be brought back, flesh and blood and all", Prue assured Paige. "If this is done right. And I know why you've called me."
"Yes", Paige nodded. "The Soul Stone, I thought to use the Power of Three but you are here, so we can just-"
"No."
"No? What do you mean no?"
"It won't work", Prue revealed to Paige, looking to her front. "The Infinity Stones are the greatest power of this Universe, no special power is going to work on them, whether it's the Power of Three or the Power of Gods, nothing can break the rules of acquiring the Soul Stone."
"Oh!" Paige looked dejected, as Natasha and Clint exchanged another look. "But then, that means-"
"The rule is 'a soul for a soul', not 'a life for a soul'", Prue then pointed out, and it took the three of them a little while to get her meaning before they realized what she meant.
Clint started. "Are you saying-"
"Yes, that's exactly what she's saying", Natasha finished for him.
"You are going to….." Paige trailed off, eyes wide as tears rolled down. "But…No! You can't!"
"What you are fighting for is bigger than just me, Paige", Prue told her younger half-sister. "My afterlife is a small price to pay for bringing half of all life back."
"No! We can find another way! We have to! You can't do this! Don't give up your afterlife!" Paige cried out. "Please, don't-"
Paige burst into tears as Prue embraced and comforted her, kissing her cheek. "Shhh, do not weep, little sister. I know what I am doing."
"Please, you can't, me, Piper, Phoebe, we all want to meet you when we go", Paige sobbed.
"And I want to make sure you all can go", Prue told Paige, stroking her face and wiping her tears as she kissed her forehead. "I have to do this."
Paige wiped her tears and firmly said. "I will find a way! You won't be in there forever! I'll get you out!"
Prue smiled and told Paige. "I love you, Paige."
"I love you too, Prue", Paige told her, because if she had never known her, she had always wished she had, and she had looked up to her.
Prue then looked at Natasha and Clint, who had sadness and respect in their eyes over the sacrifice she was about to make.
"Thank you", Natasha said to her.
"We won't forget this", Clint assured.
Prue nodded, then turned to Red Skull. "I am giving myself up in return for the Soul Stone."
With that, she chanted and turned into a smoke form before flying forth and down the cliff.
Then there was a bright flash of light right there.
Paige, Natasha and Clint woke up in the water, then Paige felt something and opened her palm to reveal the Soul Stone.
Not being able to control herself, she burst into tears as Natasha and Clint both embraced her for comfort.
At the Avengers Compound, all of them reconvened and grew back into normal size, taking off their suits as Bruce asked. "Did we really get them all?"
Rhodes had the good kind of disbelief. "You telling me this will actually work?"
"It did", Natasha said when Steve noted Paige's look.
"What happened?" He asked her.
Later, while Tony, Bruce and Rocket worked on the Infinity Gauntlet, Steve and Paige sat together as she vented to him.
"I thought I could use our power to get it all", Paige said, tears in her eyes. "Then I met the sister I'd never known. And then I…I lost her…"
Paige cried as Steve hugged her and kissed her forehead. "She lost her afterlife because of me."
"It wasn't your fault", Steve assured Paige as she looked at him.
"How can you say that?" Paige asked him.
"Did you believe in your sister and respected her?" Steve inquired, and Paige's look was all he needed to know as answer. "Then stop blaming yourself. Allow Prue the dignity of her choice. She damn well must have thought you were worth it."
Paige looked at Steve's kind eyes, considering what he was saying, then wiping her tears, finally gave a nod.
"You always know the right words to say", she said with a watery chuckle.
"These weren't my words", Steve said with a chuckle when Rhodes arrived.
"It's done", he revealed.
Rocket told the rest of them. "All right. The glove's ready. Question is, who's gonna snap their freaking fingers?"
Paige shrugged. "I'll do it."
Steve and Scott asked at the same time. "Excuse me?"
"It's okay", Paige assured.
"Paige, we haven't decided who shall put it on yet", Steve told her. "Besides, we don't know what will happen once you wear it."
Paige looked around and asked. "I'm sorry. What, we're just sitting around waiting for the right opportunity?"
Scott suggested to the rest. "We should at least discuss it."
"No, no, sitting here staring at that thing is not gonna bring everybody back", Paige told them all. "My sister gave up her afterlife for this. I have the Power of the Gods now. So this responsibility falls upon me. It's my duty."
"It's not about that", Tony told her.
"Just let me do it, please, let me do it", Paige requested.
"The glove is channeling enough energy to light up a continent", Tony pointed out.
"Paige, we know how much you want it, but no one should risk their lives", Steve told her.
"Isn't that what we do on missions?" Paige pointed out.
Natasha started. "Paige-"
"I've to do it this time.
"Not you, Paige, I must do it."
All turned to Thor, who looked up with determination in his eyes.
He walked over the Gauntlet. "I understand your concerns but I have to do this. It has to be me; I can feel it in my bones."
"Are you sure about this?" Steve repeated what he had said to Paige, looking Thor in the eye.
"I am," Thor said with a nod. "I didn't go for the head, people died, this falls to me."
His sincerity and determination was clear for all.
"Okay. Let's do this," Steve ordered.
"Remember, you're just bringing back everyone Thanos snapped away, nothing else," Tony warned him.
Thor understood Tony and Steve's concerns, given he had gone for the head too late. In truth, there were many people Thor would like to bring back. His father. His mother. Loki. Heimdall. The Warriors Three. Coulson. So many others.
A few years ago, when he was a selfish, brash price, he would not have hesitated to use the stones to bring them back, regardless of the consequences. But he was no longer that prince. He was a king now, a hero. An Avenger. He understood some things happened for a reason, because fate wanted them to happen. So he would respect fate's will, no matter how much it hurt him.
"Let's do this," Thor said and Tony nodded as Thor readied himself.
Then, they were ready. All gathered around Paige as she raised her orb shield to protect them all.
"FRIDAY, engage Barn Door Protocol," Tony ordered.
"You got it Boss," FRIDAY said as the base was put on lockdown, the windows, walls, and everything was blocked out by steel doors.
With a deep breath, Thor reached his right hand inside the gauntlet. As he lifted his arm up, the gauntlet on, he was struck by the energy. He understood why Thanos had been strained at first, it was almost more than Thor could bear. As they saw the energy covering Thor's body and heard him groan, The Avengers were concerned.
"Thor, you okay?" Rocket called out concerned.
"I am fine Rabbit," Thor grunted, lifting his fingers.
Using all his will, with a roar, Thor snapped his fingers and the Stones flashed as Thor used their power.
The flash was gone as Thor cried out and fell to his knees, pain searing through his arm as he yanked the gauntlet off. It landed on the other side of the room as everyone rushed to him.
"Hey, you okay?" Natasha asked concerned as they saw the radiation burn on his arm.
"Hold still Thor," Paige said as she used her powers to heal Thor and he sighed.
"Did-did it work?" Thor asked as he breathed heavily, trying to put his jumbled thoughts together.
No one had an answer as the steel doors opened. Scott looked up as he heard the sounds of birds chirping outside and Clint's phone rang.
At the same time, Paige closed her eyes, feeling herself weaken, but a connection strengthen.
"It did", Paige said, a smile and happy tears in her eyes. "I can feel it, they are all back. My-"
Like Clint's, her phone rang too as she took it out and saw Piper's face on the screen.
She accepted the call as Piper called out. "Paige, where are you?"
"Piper?" Paige choked out as Steve hugged her from behind for comfort.
"Paige, what is-"
"Piper!" Paige exclaimed in joy.
"It worked," Scott said with a relieved grin as he looked outside and saw life restored after 5 years.
"Great job!" Bruce said.
All of them were laughing as they looked around, feeling overjoyed and victorious.
A recovering Thor looked up and his eyes widened in horror to see a huge black shape in the sky over the Compound.
Then fire was rained down, shattering the glass ceiling above as multiple shots followed, causing a huge explosion.
And that's the end.
Like Prue said, its 'soul for a soul', not 'life for a soul', so I think what I did works, poor Prue though, but hope I did the scene well.
Paige snapping would have been cool but at day's end, Thor has the most right really out of them all, it fits with his character arc.
Didn't do the Frigga scene this time because he would have met her in the past and gotten his encouragement.
Don't like Peggy but 'dignity of choice' is still a nice quote overall.
Now big fight, hope all enjoyed and see you all next time with another chapter.
