Chapter 4- Ghost vs. Ghost
Stick was in the basement of Wolfram and Hart, having felt drawn there, and he walked around before hearing a repetitive chopping sound nearby, and walked down the hall toward it.
There was a man at the end of the hall, sitting at a table, chopping something with his back to Stick.
"What are you doing here? And stop making that sound", Stick complained, annoyed.
As Stick walked closer to the man at the table, he could see that the man is chopping off his fingers one by one.
Stick was unimpressed. "Try getting chopsticks stabbed through your fingers, then we'll talk."
The man turned to face Stick, and revealed his lipless cut-up face with gashes all over his eyes and cheeks.
"Man, I wish I was still blind. Then I wouldn't have to see that shit ugly mug of yours."
And then the thing was gone as Stick sighed and rolled his eyes.
Wesley swept everything from his desk in his office, then grabbing Lilah, put her down as she ripped his shirt open while he pulled her skirt down and ripped her shirt open as they kissed each other hungrily.
Then suddenly Stick appeared with a pop, making them both jump as they glared at him for ruining their moment.
"We got a bit of a problem."
"What kind of problem?"
"The suck down into some kind of Purgatory Hell kind of problem."
"And we have a problem of you appearing unannounced and seeing our stuff", Lilah snarled as Stick just chuckled and shook his head.
"What is it?" Wesley asked as Lilah picked up her skirt and started putting it back on.
"There's something here, some ghostly figure", Stick explained to the two. "It has been trying to drag me somewhere. Shithead's pretty strong, but I'm stronger. But figured you all should know."
Stick looked up to see a ghostly figure hanging from the ceiling and staring down as he said. "Show's over shithead, get out of here."
A while later, all of them other than Stick were in Angel's office to discuss what was going on with the old man this time.
"And, why isn't he here?" Gunn asked.
"He says apparently he shall be on the lookout for it in case it goes after us", Lilah said with folded arms, then added with a sneer. "Hope it takes him instead."
"He told us it was one ghost with some powers which manifested various other kinds of ghosts", Wesley explained best he could. "And they are after him."
"Why would they be?" Angel wondered.
"Could be any reason, after all, psychos inhabit this place, the ghosts would be the same", Cordelia said, holding a silent Connor close to her.
"Well, whatever it is, we must get our thinking caps on and take it down fast, as irritating as blind Shaolin master is, he's on our side", Lorne pointed out to the group.
"I can think of a way to help him", Fred said.
"Are we sure there are any other ghosts here though?" Gunn asked.
"Mystics did a sweep 10 minutes ago, they found no ghost here, not even Stick", Groo pointed out as they realized what that meant.
"Which means if he can stay here undetected, someone else can too", Cordelia sighed. "Great, just what we needed."
Lilah's eyes suddenly widened as she realized something, and Wesley noticed her look.
"Something you want to tell us, Lilah?" He asked her.
"I think I might know who it is", Lilah said, shocking them all.
"Who?" Fred asked.
"Wait a few minutes", Lilah said as she walked out, and a few minutes later, returned with a book, opening it to a certain page.
"Matthias Pavayne", Cordelia read the name. "Dark soul number 182, who is he? Lord of all lost dark souls? Shouldn't that be Mephisto or something?"
"He was a doctor who performed unorthodox surgeries on patients, non-recoverable kind", Lilah explained to the group. "So when word spread, he came to California."
"And you guys hired him, sounds right up your MO", Gunn said as Lilah sighed.
"No we didn't, smart guy", Lilah responded to him.
"Really? He sounds like he could be employee of the month", Angel said as they all chuckled.
"Good one right there", Cordelia agreed.
"You want to listen?" Lilah asked and got their attention again. "Representatives from Wolfram and Hart wanted to build a new branch, which would be where we are standing right now."
"That supposed to be poetic or something, your evilness?" Lorne inquired.
"No, just basic knowledge, green bean", Lilah countered before continuing. "A Spanish mission rested on the site the seers had recommended."
"Must have been a real disappointment", Fred said.
"So an appropriate sacrifice was needed to deconsecrate the grounds", Lilah finished with a smirk as they realized what she was saying.
"So this place is built on the blood of a psychopath? No wonder this place is evil", Cordelia said as now Connor began to cry, and she rocked him. "Shhhh, don't cry, mama Cordy is here."
"Come on", Angel said as he took out a milk bottle and fed him. "Here's your bubba, come on."
"Shouldn't Pavayne be roasting in Hell though?" Gunn asked.
Wesley read some more from the book and said. "He was a master of the Dark Arts. Perhaps he used that as a means to remain here."
"People die here all the time though, so what happened to all of them? Disappeared? Vanished from existence?" Lorne wondered.
"Or perhaps our doctor is having himself some more patients", Lilah quipped as all realized what she meant.
"The Pavayne guy is munching on them all", Gunn said with a nod.
"Well, we better help out Stick then", Fred said and the revealed. "I have an idea-"
Stick walked toward the table at the end of the hall down in the basement again, but the man wasn't sitting at the table anymore. His chopped-off fingers were still there, twitching.
A business-woman appeared out of the corner. She'd gotten a shard of glass sticking out of her left eye.
Stick sighed and said. "Real original right there."
He then appeared back where the team was and saw Fred with help from Wesley working on a machine. "What are you lot up to here?"
"I got an idea, it can bring you back to life", Fred revealed, shocking Stick.
"Seriously? How?" Stick asked.
"Well, you are composed of energy, the machine I have in mind, it will convert energy to flesh", Fred told him. "That way, you don't have to deal with that guy, and you'll live again."
"Angel and Gunn have gone to get the energy required to get it running", Wesley informed him.
"Work fast then", Stick urged them. "Putting up with this asshole is more depressing then suckhead's singing."
"I wish I could disagree", Wesley commented as the three chuckled.
Then Stick started fading. "Oh great, here we go again."
Stick was now back in the basement and the ghost woman was in front of him again with the glass shard.
She said in a singsong voice. "It's gonna get you." She then giggled.
Stick inquired. "And who exactly would it be, tell me?"
"Reaper's gonna take you", the woman giggled again.
"Bullshit, I've met the Reaper, he doesn't waste time with shit like this", Stick countered.
The woman then tried to slice Stick's face with the glass shard but to her shock, the glass shard broke while Stick slugged her out.
"Come on, show yourself prick in power", Stick then called out as now the ringleader appeared in front of him, wearing a coat like Jack the Ripper, having torture instruments as he spoke in an English accent.
"You", Matthias Pavayne snarled in anger. "You're resisting, how dare you?"
"Stop with this bullshit, kid", Stick mocked him and it enraged Pavayne even more.
"I'm no kid, I'm a master of the dark arts", Pavayne snarled as he threw a punch but to his horror, Stick caught it while his eyes widened in pure shock.
"What are you?"
Stick gave a smirk in response. "You're the disease, I'm the cure."
Next moment, Pavayne was sent flying through the wall as Stick taunted him. "Good little deal you've got here, send these spirits and save yourself. Unfortunately for you, I was trained by the Ancient One, and I've a protection spell from the Sorcerer Supreme himself."
He punched Pavayne, then blocked his punch and kneed him twice before ducking a punch and punching him twice. He blocked the next, punched his abdomen, spun and kicked him through another wall before picking him up and punched him repeatedly.
"You picked the wrong ghost to mess with, bloodhound."
Stick then head-butted Pavayne and threw him across the building into another corner. Before he could recover, Stick was there and stomped his face before lifting him up and kneeing his abdomen, then he grabbed his head and slammed it onto the wall before hurling him away again.
As Pavayne tried to get up, there was an energy burst, so Stick kicked Pavayne down and ran to the direction, Pavayne following.
Angel, Cordelia, Wesley, Lilah, Fred, Gunn and Groo were in the lab waiting for the machine to do its magic. Lorne was in a room, taking care of baby Connor at the moment.
Fred was reading her scanner, which beeped. "He's here." They were unable to see Stick right now so she yelled out to the room. "Stick, step into the circle! Hurry! We've only got one chance at making you corporeal agai—"
Fred's sentence was cut off when she started choking. She put her hands to her throat. It was actually Pavayne. "Why ever would I want to do that?"
Wesley called out. "Fred!"
"It's Pavayne!" Gunn warned.
"Jack the Ripper is here!" Cordelia realized.
Angel noted. "He's killing her."
"Come on", Groo called out.
Angel, Cordelia, Wesley, Gunn and Groo charged toward Fred to try and help her, but Pavayne knocked them all across the room.
"You can't do a thing here", Lilah told them all. "He is too much."
Pavayne taunted Stick, who was standing there. "Decisions. The girl... heh... or the flesh. There's no time for both."
Stick stared at the machine's ring which was ramping up, clearly almost ready to do it's magic, then he looked at Fred across the room.
Pavayne taunted. "You have to make a choice, old man. That is true, there is a choice here.
"It's not a choice", Stick disappeared, and reappeared beside Fred, grabbing Pavayne by the shirt, freeing Fred. "Enjoy Hell, asshole."
Stick knocked Pavayne into the machine's ring just as it activated. Pavayne was now corporeal. Angel and Cordelia got to their feet and walked up to the machine's ring, while Wesley, Gunn and Groo went to Fred's side.
Pavayne was completely knocked out as Stick now appeared, visible to them all once more. "You know, I was actually starting to like him."
The others looked at him incredulously.
"What? Kicking a scumbag's ass is rather endearing, most fun I had since bookworm and I killed the skullshit."
He then added. "Besides, we can't let him roam free, in spirit form he'll do more damage, best to trap him somewhere."
"Thank you", Fred said gratefully looking at Stick with the rest, other than Lilah. "For saving me from him. You saved me over deciding to become corporeal again."
Stick's expression now softened. "Well, he loves you guys, for some reason, didn't want to do that to him."
All knew who Stick was referring to when he said 'he', except Lilah that is.
"Yeah, hi," Lilah got all of their attention, "Lawyer girl here, real lawyer," she looked at Gunn, "In the dark here."
Stick shrugged. "And I care, why?"
Lilah groaned as the others laughed a little.
"Though you still had the chance to live, why didn't you take it?" Cordelia inquired as Stick looked at all of them.
"I've been around a long time, a hundred and fourteen years. In that time, I haven't exactly been a saint, done good but did as much bad, more even. Took away childhoods in an effort to create warriors, or to actually kill children, to hurt the Hand. Abandoned the one kid that needed me more than the rest. I deserved to die, no doubt about that, and considering it was Ellie who swung the sword, it was all the more fitting. Maybe I deserve to go to Hell, or wherever I'm supposed to go, but I figured, while I'm in this afterlife, might as well do some more good to balance out the bad, and correct my wrongs. May not work, but hey, got to give it a shot at least. It's my last chance."
"Yeah, got to give it a shot", Angel agreed, relating to him regarding that as they all understood Stick a little more. "We all got to give it a shot."
Pavayne was in a restraining cell only a few feet wide. He was standing in it, strapped in by metal bars, with electrodes attached to his head.
Angel and Eve were standing in front of him, looking at him as Angel asked. "Sure it'll hold him?"
Eve assured. "Permanent storage. If there's anything Wolfram & Hart excels at, it's keeping their unmentionables unmentioned."
Angel taunted Pavayne. "Congratulations. You get to live forever, unable to move, to touch, or to feel... or to affect anything in the world around you. But don't worry—I had 'em give you a window."
He shut the door, revealing a brick-sized window cut out of the cell door right at eye-level.
"Welcome to hell."
Angel and Eve walked off.
Due to all the abilities ghost Stick has, and the fact that there's a good chance of Lilah knowing about Pavayne, this episode was much easier to do than canon for sure.
Anyway, don't worry, Matt and Faith are coming in very soon now.
Thank you to Brainstorm Sorcerer for his help again.
Hope all enjoyed and see you all next time with another chapter.
