I don't own Mass Effect nor Girls' Frontlines.
In the Armory of the vessel M5A1was fixing his gun, making sure everything was working fine, from the Mass Driver fitted to the barrel of the gun to the power pack that was at the side of the receiver, next was fitting the magazines with the new bullets he had made several days before the assignment which had a depleted Uranium-Tungsten carbide core for stronger penetration which was amped up to several degrees thanks to the aforementioned mass driver.
The Bullets themselves were 7.62x51 APFSDS subcaliber rounds, which had him change the barrel to a smoothbore barrel so the bullets don't loose their effectiveness, and changes to the receiver to fit the size of the bullet.
Then he picked up a cigar that was resting next to him and took a long drag from it, and began recalling how he got here.
He recalled being sent to infiltrate a S.F base where M4A1 had been captured by Agent, so him M16A1, SOPII, RO, went in to rescue her, he recalled the near failure that the rescue was unless he hadn't taken the Umbrella virus, which if he were to be honest may have been something that went against the objective Persica had given him.
Then...
Suddenly M5A1 was broken off of his memory lane as he heard the armory's door sliding open as someone entered the room.
"I didn't think that there were any folks using live magazine fed weapons these days." Came a male voice causing M4A2 to look to his left and saw Kaidan Alenko standing in front of the door.
"They don't, I am the only one that does, as I am not one for the fancy toys you folks in the alliance and the citadel use, not enough stomping power to pierce the shields for my liking." M5A1 told Alenko his opinion on the modern firearms that the alliance had been using, in his opinion they were to fancy, to overengineered, a weapons is supposed to be simple to fix, clean and be taken care of, and these... mini railguns pft, he'd better have some outdated gun from WWII, and the overheating problem didn't help them in his eyes.
But he couldn't really complain, these the guns these folks were using, and he used his own gun. And if he were to be honest he thanked Persica for giving him the parameters for gunsmithing.
"Sounds like you aren't one to like newer stuff." Kaidan commented.
"Maybe, maybe not. All I know is that guns these days seem to sacrifice function, practicality, and ease of maintenance over higher rates of fire, which makes wonder how the barrel of the guns hasn't melted yet, fancier looks, and the ability to keep them compact as if we were a tank crew and carry them like a laptop, and don't get me started on the grain of sand being shot at longer distanced they'd simply dissolve into vapor, and the supersonic speed isn't anything fanciful a 7.62 Nato could go at Mach 2.5." M5A1 as he showed Alenko his hands and counted the disadvantages.
"But they did manage fix the problem of logistics by giving soldiers weapons that held larger numbers of bullets and could easily been replaced by just a block to be used for ammo." Kaidan argued.
"And how long will a soldier live? And is he going to be living long enough to dispense those ammo? Then what happens to the weapon if the enemy scavenges it and then turns it against you? If anything this solving of logistical problems for infantry simply led to over abundance of military weapons which may be turned against you if the enemy takes them." M5A1 gave his point that over abundance of weapons and ammo isn't always good, especially given that the militaries of the Citadel council use what are essentially squad automatic weapons.
"Still you have to admit that they can be an advantage. And besides it's not as if you can talk given that over-engineered weapon you've got resting on the table." Kaidan said.
"That depends on the point of view kiddo, sides this is just a product of circumstance and force to adapt." M5A1 said petting his rifle.
"Ladies and gents this is your pilot speaking we have arrived Eden Prime and are approaching it's orbit. Over." Came Joker's voice over the ship's announcement speakers.
"Well you heard him, chop chop." M5A1 said as he got up and went to meet up with Nihilus.
At the drop bay
15 minutes later
"Greetings everyone, I hope that you are ready for deployment?" Asked Eugene as he showed up with his rifle in hand getting some raised eyebrows by the gathered folks, since the weapon was a magazine fed weapon, and there've not a single mag fed weapons ever since humanity had been using Eezo, and the fact that it was a hodgepodge of parts from what looked like a mass-driver on the barrel, the sights on it.
"Yeah we are ready to go and retrieve the beacon." Said Richard Jenkins who was standing next to Jean as he prepared his weapon.
"Alright as discussed earlier, we will be going to exfiltrate a Promethean beacon. Does anyone have any questions before we get there?" Said Nihlus said.
"Yeah, is there anything or anyone else of importance that may assist with the beacon, like researchers scientists and archeologists?" Jean asked Nihlus .
"No Commander, the scientists and the archeologists have been sent to the Citadel once the Beacon was first discovered." Nihlus told them.
"And what about the transmission? I hope that we are not going to be facing a sudden attack, from anyone that may want the beacon." Jean asked again voicing her concern, hoping that the transmission regarding the beacon wasn't intercepted.
"Talk about thorough, Nihilus, the kid sure would make a fine spook with that level of Paranoia." Eugene commented in a joking manner as he liken her to a black ops spook for the intelligence committee.
"What makes you think I am spook?" Jean asked Eugene, who smirked behind his helmet.
"Call it intuition, Commander." Eugene commented as he tapped his head.
"Alright if that is all, get ready we approaching the drop sight." Anderson said as he entered the chamber.
"Roger that Captain." Jean said with a nod, as she along with Nihlus , Kaidan, Eugene, and Richard boarded the Kodiak shuttle.
"And Shepheard?" Anderson said catching Jean's attention.
"Yes, Anderson?" Jean asked the Captain.
"Good luck down there." Anderson told Jean, who nodded and the door of the Kodiak Shuttle closed, and flew off the surface of Eden prime.
"What was that about?" Eugene asked Jean.
"None of your business." Jean replied frostily.
"Alright, whatever you say Commander." Eugen said as he raised his arms in defense, and then turned to face Nihlus.
"So what do you think?" Nihlus asked M5A1 with the equivalent of a smile of a Turian.
"She sure isn't what the papers said that's for sure. Though I wonder how her personality effects her combat ability." M5A1 said as he looked at Jean.
"We will wait and see M5A1, we will wait and see." Nihlus told the estranged T-Doll, who for some odd reason kept his sights on the Commander.
