Chapter 8

"Shirou, are you alright?" ~ Mei looked at the young man by her side. His hands... no, his fists were trembling.

The pirates had been exiled into a magical cage hundreds of square kilometres in size. In a world as primitive as this, the pirates were given a chance to start anew, their crimes forgiven with their exile. Even so, they quickly banded together to make themselves into an scourge for the locals. Honestly, if there was noone but themselves here, Shirou wouldn't have cared, but...

Looking at Adon's wife and child, hearing the laments of his friends, and knowing that the pirates were still keeping the lemurian women and children as their playthings made his rage boil. How could he save everyone, when he couldn't even save a friend?

"No, Mei-san, I don't think I am. Did anyone know anything about where they keep the prisoners in the ship?"

"Second deck under the weather deck." ~ She replied right away ~ "The weather deck is the top deck, so 2 floors under that one."

"Eh~"

"Lemurians were people of the sea."

"Right. So, how do you know where they are keeping them?"

"The first deck is likely to be the pirate's common area and sleeping deck, though they may sleep on the weather deck if the night is nice enough. The prisoners will be under it to make it harder for them to escape and easier for the pirates to hear anything unusual." ~ She paused ~ "And keep them close by, for ease of use."

"...that's awful, but it actually gives me an idea. That huge ship, its not actually floating is it?"

"Hm? No, I think I remember there being some rocks there. They probably built their fortress like that because ships is all they know."

"That's great."

"...What are you going to do?"

~O~

"Food comes to us!" ~ The darfari cry out in excitement at the sight of the beautiful girls wading water towards them.

The cannibals began whistling calls back and forth across the end of the cannyon, drawing forth more and more of their tribesmen towards the edge of the shore. Their huge smiles exposing their filed-down, sharpened teeth as they encouraged the girls to approach, promising food and safety even as they continued to hold weapons at the ready.

"Really. This is the limit of their subtlety, I guess." ~ Luvia sighed, her breath washing over Rin's right ear.

"I am having a hard time believing they do not see anything suspicious about us. Like, anything at all?"

Rin rubbed at the bridge of her nose. Smart as she is, she had grown used to most people being slow in comparison, but this was just stupid. Luvia and herself were moving forth in an straight line over deep water, yet the cannibals were so excited they genuinely saw nothing wrong with them just sliding forth while submerged up to their waists in water, rather than actually wading or swimming. Luvia was sitting right behind her as both of them rode atop Rojo(1), letting the massive beast carry them towards their targets.

A few moments later, six shellbacks emerged from the water ahead of the girl's arrival, and immediately leapt at the front most darfari like cannonballs of shell and muscle, followed by five more, then six more, and finally the enormous red shellback carrying the girls on its back.

It took the cannibals a couple of moments to process what was happening, even though some of them had already been crushed under the shellbacks hoof-like claws. All the girls had to do was shoot gandr at anyone smart enough to run towards them, and support their pets the rest of the time. Rin slid down from Rojo's back first and equipped her shield, and once Luvia did the same, the massive beast crouched and roared before leaping forth itself and joining the melee.

Tents made of human skin, wind chimes made of human bones, tools made of human teeth, and both magus felt sick to their stomachs once they saw the remains of the darfari's last prisoner being gnawed upon by a child too young to talk. As their bracelets informed them that they had seen enough samples of darfari armors and weapons to know how to craft them, they needed a minute to calm down as the knowledge of the obscene craft flowed into their minds.

Oddly enough, they found some actually useful things in the savages' possession, such as a merchant's book on sericulture(2), along with a box of silkworms, and some notes on winemaking as well as some grape saplings.

"Oh God Yes, Coffee. I am 0% a morning person." ~ Rin quickly stored the coffee beans away.

"I noticed. The amount of stuff you will let me get away with just so you do not have to get out of bed is rather amazing, Rin."

"Uh hu, well, now I have coffee, so there."

"You still need to get out of bed to make it."

"Shoot."

Some gold coins, more silver coins, plenty of iron weapons, quite a few pieces of armour, and a frankly apalling amount of human bones (which they decided to bury properly later) was the bulk of the cannibals loot. More importantly, there's a massive black stone structure in the back of their settlement, and as soon as they walked up the steps into it, they were presented with a host of psychic imprints (ghosts) performing a grim ceremony to open a hidden door on the floor...

~O~

The sea at night is pitch black off the lemurian shore. Feeling the weight of his light armour growing heavier and heavier with every passing moment, Shirou began reconsidering the lemurian warrior's armour design. True, he thought it was all form over function, but Mei had zero issues swimming ahead of him and then keeping herself afloat as she waited for him.

He finally caught up to her, and she needed to help him stay afloat once he summoned a sword to cut at the thick hull with. Honestly, if he had tried to swim with it, he would have drowned. Mei had to keep him afloat and steady enough he could push against the hull in order to cut an entrance for the both of them, and then they were inside the bowels of the 'ship'.

As expected, the lowest level of the pirates' fortress was supported on the reefs and rocks Mei had told him were there. There was also a large number of chests which Shirou had very little issue forcing open, finding most of the pirates ill-gotten gains from looting the lemurians' temples and tombs. He quickly stored it all inside his bracelet, and began moving upstairs, emerging in a long, luxurious dormitory large enough for a tennis court. Its walls covered with curtains, paintings, weapon and armor racks that made one think of a king's bedroom rather than a pirate's.

Close by, a massive bed stands with its curtains unfolded. A young woman with ebony skin is sleeping on her side next to the bed, nestled atop some pillows on the carpeted floor, two iron cuffs keeping her arms bound behind her in reverse prayer, with the lower one forcing her elbows together and the upper one holding her wrists in a tight squeeze, as well as serving as anchoring for a short chain wrapped around her throat. There's a chain leading from her left ankle to somewhere under the massive bed forcing her to stay. While Shirou stops at the sight and considers how to cut her free with the least noise possible, Mei peeks past the curtains surrounding the bed, then immediately pulls away.

Shirou sees her face, and prepares himself for whatever is there. He tries, anyway.

A tall man with four star-shaped scars on his stomach is sleeping on his back without a care in the world, a single greasy glove on his right hand. Four children (three boys and one girl) are laying about on the bed, their arms bound in the same way as the woman on the floor. It takes Shirou a moment to process what he's looking at, then the sight of the children's bodies covered in black and blue welts causes him to go rigid as his face contorts with rage and his right hand immediately curls up around the handle of a spear.

Mei looks at him, but Shirou is looking only at the man and already projected a barbed spear to impales the pirate through the throat. The most his mercy will allow right now, is to give the man a somewhat quick death as he wakes up nailed unto the mattress, his hands reaching for his throat to no avail as the children stir awake. Mei pulls the girl into her arms and covers her mouth as she starts to scream, stifling her cries while the pirate tries to gurgle a cry of alarm, his blood spraying unto the sheets and two of the boys in short lived squirts matching the weakening of his heart.

"Mei...?" ~ The woman whispers softly, roused from sleep by the muffled cries. ~ "how did you get in here? Who's this man?"

"Shirou is a friend." ~ Mei looks at Shirou as he projects a different sword and uses it to cut through the iron cuffs and chains as if they were made of mud.

"T-thank you. I'm Espel."

"Hn." ~ Shirou nods as he quickly projects a sword to slice through the cuffs and chains as if they were made of mud.

~O~

Four of the 'ghosts' force a fifth to kneel and slice his throat open, pouring blood all over the large stone disk in the middle of the room, before the disk's phantasmal counterpart evaporates and reveals a path down. The ghosts descend, and dissapear from sight through the ground.

"I want to believe this was not the typical way to open the door." ~ comments Rin as the last of the ghosts dissapears underground.

"Well, give me a minute..."

Luvia goes downstairs and stores one of the cannibal's bodies in her bracelet, walks back up and dumps the bleeding body atop the stone plate. It immediately stirs and spins as it raises, revealing a set of stairs heading down into the depths.

"Should we go down?" ~ Luvia looks at her friend.

"On the one hand, we don't know if it can be opened from the other side. On the other, I don't want to let any stone unturned."

"Alright. Worst case scenario, we blast it open."

They leave most of the shellbacks guarding the building's entrance, and start heading downstairs (4). The ghosts have some advantage on them, and are just barely visible further ahead now. The girls follow them into a vast, flooded subterranean chamber where the water reaches half way between their ankles and knees, a massive cavern gently illuminated by burning gas pockets on the surface of deep wells.

To the immediate right of the stairs, there's a softly glowing runestone...

Water flows through our city, from untainted sources in the high places and down through the mighty aqueducts that we built to sustain us. And the sewers carry away the waste from the city, washing it away in a torrent of pure clean water. Slave, you have been chosen to maintain these sewers. To sweep away the debris and creatures which gather in the foul-smelling darkness. Be honoured, bounded one, and be wary. Strange things grow in the gloom of those tunnels.

"You know, this time, it almost sounded conversational." ~ Rin said while looking about at what must have been a water treatment plant, ages ago.

"My bracelet learned some new things off that stone. Yours?"

"Same. Glowing stick, breathing potion, glowing essence, glowing standing torch, glowing wall torch, and cooked abysmal meat."

"Yes, I got the same. Glowing stick, really?"

"It is probably the bracelet's best translation."

"Hm."

They ventured forth into the flooded cavern, and found that the deep wells were well lit thanks to the thick glowing moss in the bottom. Since many of the items they just learnt about asked for exactly that moss, Rin dove down and gathered some before swimming back up.

"Now we just need some bones or twigs..." ~ She said as she checked her bracelet's inventory.

"I can see some bone incoming." ~ Luvia nodded towards a group of large, albino lizards hissing as they wadded through the water in their direction.

Well, the large white animals were basically practice targets for the beautiful magus gandr shots. Nothing but sources of flesh, leather and bones, which both girls quickly mixed with the glowing moss to make surprisingly bright torches that didn't go off underwater.

"Alright, these are pretty nice."

"I think I remember reading that white light is bad for your eyes, though." ~ Luvia commented while poking at the mass of glowing goo ~ "Its not hot. Should be safe to use as torches inside wooden buildings."

"You really enjoy building." ~ Rin smiled gently.

"The bracelet makes it easy."

They ventured forth, and found the cavern to be indeed vast. As if to betray their expectations, the water was clear and odorless, for which they were immensely grateful. Luvia called Rin over to a large stone wall covered in symbols, and the wall receded into the high ceiling, allowing them to move forth.

"Such beautiful girlsss... come forth, beautiful girlsss..." ~ A sickeningly sweet voice whispered from the depths ahead.

"I am going with snake man." ~ Rin did not sound impressed.

"That was going to be my guess. Well, then I will go with evil faery."

"That is oddly specific."

"So is snake man."

"It is dragging its S sounds, that is such a dead give away!"

They found the room before them was full of barely wet, wide channels and drainholes they had little trouble jumping across with their reinforced legs. (4) Exploring the rooms ahead of them, they found a surprising amount of truly ancient chests holding all manners of trinkets, most of them tools. As they came across a pair of tall, walking skeletons with swords, Rin immediately began shooting gandr shots.

"Rin!?"

"Ugh, highschool memories."

"...you will tell me later."

"Alright."

All along, the voice kept urging them on, inviting them in, and inviting them to flee with it to beautiful Sheny places.

"Alright, I am changing my vote to crazy faery." ~ Rin as hands Luvia an old book she just recovered off a discarded pile of rotten armour and rusted weapons.

The Darfari horde chased us into an old ruin. It was a dead end. I thought it was over. Dear Semat stepped forth bravely to hold the entrance, but the leader of the Darfari, a wild brute with mud and twigs in his hair, cut him down. I was preparing to make my final stand, when the very ground in the chamber began to rumble. The walls shook and the earth moved. The savages fled, wailing, through the passageway, as ground beneath them began to rise. It was a staircase! This was the entrance we had been searching for! Quickly, I stepped over to Semat's corpse, just long enough to close his eyes and grab his gear. Then I headed down the staircase into darkness. As my eyes adjusted, I came into a large cavern. What a sight! The floor is covered in ankle deep water and ghostfire burns above deeper pools murky depths are hard to fathom. Phosphorescent growths cling to the water's edge and in their dim glow, large creatures are moving in the water. I must be cautious. If the treasure is truly down here, I will need to stay alive in order to find it.

"Treasure in the sewers, really?" ~ Luvia rolled her eyes

The path forward grows less clear and yet with every chamber that I conquer, my certainty grows. This is the place where my ancestors, the legendary Zapayo da Kordava came in search of his ultimate dream. The voice in my mind whispers to me of the treasure that awaits me, she praises my strength and conviction. She tells me where to go and how to navigate this maze of confusing chambers. This is the path soon I will have both the secrets of my ancestors and I will meet this mysterious lady who speaks in my mind.

"Oh, so whatever the voice belongs to, it has been here for a while now." ~ Comments Rin as she squeezes in against Luvia to read the journal with her.

"Makes you wonder, just how old this place really is." ~ Said the blonde

This is it! I can feel her presence just ahead of me! It is time to meet my love, and recover the precious journal of Zapayo da Kordava. If my father is correct, it contains the last recipe that he wrote before he went missing, designed based upon his adventures in the Black Kingdoms to the south. But this is secondary to meeting my love. She awaits me just ahead, and her sweet voice sings in my mind. She is beautiful. I will take her with me back to Zingara and make her my wife. All else is secondary, including the journal of my ancestor. She is telling me to put down my weapons and possessions...why not? I have nothing to fear from such a gentle spirit...

"Aha!" ~ called Luvia ~ "Spirit, see? I knew I was right."

"At least he was looking for his ancestor's research. I kind of respect the guy a little more now. Even so..."

"Yeah..."

Since the explorer's belongings were right where he left them, it was easy to guess that he never made it back. The girls continued forth, and after taking down two more skeletons, arrived at a central platform surrounding a pool of muck...

~O~

"Espel-san, please help the others into the lowest deck." ~ Shirou dispels the sword he had been slicing through the chains and cuffs with, and replaces it with his favourite paired blades.

"Shirou? Weren't we just going to rescue everyone and come back some other time?" ~ Mei is holding a boy and the girl against her, while Espel is still rubbing life back into her own arms.

"I changed my mind. Men like these, don't deserve to stick around. Please come with me to help their victims here."

The women look at each other, then Espel promises to do so as the redheaded young man leaves the room. Shirou subvocalizes 'Trace Bullet: Quick Fire'(5). No sooner had he done so, that a gleaming longsword came into being above his left shoulder, floating in mid air as its body flattened itself into a wide, nearly paper-thin shape with 'sharp' as its most important concept.

There was a pirate sleeping drunk on the hallway floor. To be fair, the man didn't even feel when the gleaming guillotine-like blade beheaded him. The body didn't even shiver as it turned into a corpse and its head, freed from the body, rolled off a few inches on the wooden floor.

Shirou got ready to enter through the only other door on the hallway when he heard the sound of flesh being hit and the matching whimpers of a child. He didn't even open the door, he just reinforced himself and pushed through the wooden wall as if it was made of paper, then cut a pirate in twain by shooting a freshly made guillotine-like blade at him, bisecting him diagonally from his upper left shoulder to the right side of his waist. Two more pirates were busying themselves with raping a busty young girl and a boy that would barely have reached up to Shirou's chest. He didn't hesitate, and cut them where they stood and knelt. His only regret was in getting their victims dirty with the blood of the bisected bodies.

He wants to stop and help, but the sooner the pirates are gone, the sooner their victims are safe, and that's for the better. He leaves the room as Mei rushes in to calm down and evacuate the former prisoners. Finally making it to the stairs at the end of the hallway, he goes up to find an storage room and another set of stairs. Thankfully, it doesn't looks like there's anyone here, so he quickly goes up and comes to the deck where the prisoners are kept.

Children and women chained to each other and the floor, most of them covered in bruises, and all of them inside cages that would have been small for children, forcing the women to curl up and kneel just to fit it. Shirou paused, then decided to rush forth to the deck above to get rid of the pirates. Soon wouldn't be soon enough, and sure enough, he found them sleeping on the floor and hammocks, a few prisoners tied over barrels for the pirates' ease of use.

He began to cut, and even though he only made it half way through the crew before the rest armed themselves and charged at him, it made little to no difference as he continued to parry, slash, and shoot guillotine blades at any pirate that wasn't sharing a line of fire with one of their prisoners. Coldly and quickly, the young redhead turned the deck into an slaughterhouse. A few of the pirates made it out into the weather deck, but they couldn't outrun his flying blades, their bodies falling into the water and luring in so many sharks it would be weeks before the predators finally left the bay for the open sea.

~O~

"Alright, I was not expecting a demon slug!" ~ Rin raised her shield to block another ball of acid, the enchanted shield's durability going down a little bit more.

"If possible, I would like to study the body." ~ Luvia retreated downstairs to let a flock of gadr fly forth.

The 15' tall demon slug roared in falsetto as the blonde's shots Shek into its bulbous body. It leaned back, and swung its body in a wide circle to cover the entirety of the platform, knocking Rin back through the air against the distant walls, causing the black-haired magus to drop her shield as she spun in mid air to land with her feet against the wall before landing on all four on the floor. The girls' greater shellback does its best to attack at the thing, but the demon is in the middle of an acid pool, and quite handily out of melee reach.

"Ugh!" ~ Rin let out a soft grunt, then rushed to pick her shield back up ~ "How does a thing that big survive on rats and moss!?"

"By eating pretty little intruders, dear~" ~ The slug cooes as she reaches forth towards the black-haired girl, only for Luvia to push it off course by showering its body with gandr shots.

"Hey! Get in line!"

"Get in line?" ~ Rin calls Luvia out on it while rolling away and lifting her shield again.

The enormous slug demon howls and arches itself back, then regurgitates a tide of acid at both girls, scalding their legs and causing steam to rise from the ground. The attack obviously cost it, though, as it falls flat on the floor while gasping for breath, more than enough time for the girls to power through the pain and shower its head with gandr.

It spasms as it dies, the body squirming and rolling about, letting the sewer drain and revealing a bottom covered in bones of all sorts, an strangely intact book among the remains.

"Ah... Rin, how are you holding?" ~ Luvia reaches into her bracelet's inventory and pulls out the aloe-infused bandages.

"This better not leave any scars. Shirou loves my legs, you know?"

"Uh hu. I agree with the sentiment."

"Please don't make me laugh right now, it hurts." ~ Rin sighs and leans back against the wall, unwilling to sit on the acid-covered floor ~ "Throw me some bandages."

"Let me do it, you are terrible with knots."

Once their wounds are taken care of, they butcher the demon slug (magus gonna magus) for reagents, and pick up the book. Their bracelents inform them of several new recipes, including reptile armour and abyssal weapons. Their most interesting trophy, however, is an strange magical staff they found inside the creature itself.

"Ah, good thing we were wearing armour. The burns are not as bad." ~ Sighs Rin as she looks around at the large sewer grates surrounding the room. ~ "I can see Shelight at the top of this one. I think its a shortcut out."

"Good, I want out already."

"Getting Rojo to climb up this thing is going to be a feat..."

"Ugh."

The girls emerge at the top of what probably was a massive sewer, right next to an imposing, abandoned outpost of smooth black stone.

"Hm. I guess the river is that way... this area is really nothing but sand." ~ Luvia shields her eyes from the blinding She.

"Makes sense after a sandstorm elemental has walked by a few hundred thousand times."

"That huge wall over there, do you want to explore that?"

"Not today. I say we rest and recover first, I want to wash in the river first, then have a proper bath at home."

"Home, is it?" ~ Rin smiles while looking at her friend.

"Well, you know what I meant."

"Its fine, I guess its home for now. Hopefully we will find Shirou soon. Or at least a nicer place to live in."

"What is wrong with our current base?"

"The little hut is adorable, Luvia, but I'm tired of living in a cave, paved floor or not."

"Its economy of materials. Plus, its very safe."

"I have been thinking about it, actually. I think we should try some experiemts with the wheel of pain."

"Hmm..."

~O~

Shirou gasped, whimpered, and hurled as he rested on his hands and knees on the sand. He killed every single... no, he slaughtered the pirates all the way from their fortress to the beach. Right now, Mei and several of the children were crouching or sitting around him, thanking him and waiting for him to recover, while Espel helped the more heavily abused of the women down the ramps connecting the pirates' fortress to the beach.

"Shirou, I really want to ask you about how you did... everything you did, but for now... thank you." ~ Mei said while gently rubbing his back

"Thank you!" ~ the children were crying around him, and cheering him on.

Bathing in the warm gratitude of children, Shirou found it surprisingly easy to forgive himself for killing every single pirate in the area.

"Come on, Shirou, let's go home. I'm sure you want the children to go back to their parents, right?"

"Ah~ yes." ~ He took a deep breath and rubbed his mouth clean before standing up and helping with the children.

They got a hero's welcome. Bathing in everyone's gratitude, it was a novel experience for a young man who didn't know how to properly value his own self. The lemurians improvised a celebration.

"Shirou, you look like you are about to fall over dead. Would you like to sleep here tonight? We'd be happy to accommodate you." ~ The cherry-blonde young woman suggested while offering him a glass of purple wine. ~ "Don't worry, I won't assault you in your sleep or anything like that."

"Hm. I... thanks." ~ He nodded, and Mei guided him towards one of the sleeping bags next to a bonefire just far enough the noise of the celebration was but a faint background to the warm night.

"Shirou..."

"Hm?"

"Thank you." ~ Large tears were running down her pretty face. ~ "Tonight, you avenged my father. Tonight, you rescued my mother. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."

The lemurian warrior sobbed softly, smiling as she hugged him tight. It was a while before she calmed down enough to let him go, and they sat talking about his home until he began to yawn.

"Shirou."

"Yes?"

"Thank you." ~ She leaned in for a kiss, only for him to stop her when their lips were about to touch.

"Mei, I told you I'm with someone already..."

"Just a kiss? For my hero."

She looked so earnest, he didn't know what to say. She leaned in and kissed him, her lips tasted like the sea. Then he kissed her back, and she started to take off his shirt...

"No, Mei. I'm sorry, I should have stopped before now."

"Hm. Whoever you are with, I'm jealous." ~ She smiled, but didn't push the issue before pulling back. ~ "Have a good rest. Any one of us would die before letting anything happen to you, Shirou. You are among friends."

"Good night, Mei."

She watched him fall asleep, and stayed by his side until daybreak came by.

~O~

1 – Their Greater Shalleback pet. Yes, I know the official name is shalleback, I think that's stupid. They should be called shellbacks.

2 – Sericulture is the growth and care of silkworms. I don't know if I've said this already, but the Homestead mod was absorbed into the Emberlight mod, and that mod is FUCKING AMAZING in the amount of stuff it gives you. Also, you can use mods even on consoles now. Mods you need? I'd say Pippi Mod, and then Emberlight, followed by Northern Timber.

3 – Watch Conan Exiles - The Dregs Dungeon Guide Updated 5.26.19 in youtube for a super quick run through the dungeon. Its basically a speed/cheese run so its like just 4 minutes long, I think. Well, only if you aren't planning on playing it yourself and/or don't care about spoilers.

4 – I am aware you need to shoot the buttons to move forth, but that's an in-game mechanic that they would really just ignore as they could easily make the jumps.

5 – My lore-expert friend said that way of saying it would be fine. That or 'Sword Barrel: Fully Open' and I genuinely laughed at that second one so I went with the first option.

Hainz Leonard Kim: Thanks. I am open to suggestions and requests, btw. Also, how does one go about writing pancake scenes in this site?

AnimeA55Kicker: Well, they saved each other's lives enough by now, I think.

jon02789555: Thanks, but since Conan Exiles is a sandbox game, it really lets me write in whatever I want so I am not constricted by somebody's precious canon, that lets me write in a bunch of ideas.

Rankin de Merthyr: I am so sorry. Like I've said a bunch, get the Pippi mod, the Emberlight mod, and the Northern Timber mod for your single player experience. Those are THE best mods. And the Northern timber mod comes with extra building sets including japanese and chinese, as well as viking and other building styles. Really, once you are tired of the vanilla building pieces, you only need to spend money on DLCs if you REALLY liked the way a building set looked like.

That being said, I think the Nemedian DLC that came out earlier today, and the Architects of Argo, are the best DLCs, building wise. I'd say that the "Debaucheries of Derketo" is the worst of all DLCs, too.

Also, I am aware that my fighting scenes are pretty short, but that's because:

1) I myself always just scroll down and skip over the fighting scenes where I know nothing is actually risked. Its not like anyone thought there was any chance Luvia, Rin or Shirou were going to die on this chapter, or am I wrong?

2) I enjoy world building and plot development a hell of a lot more than meaningless fighting scenes.

By the way, I am writing two more fanfics at the same time, so please drop by and take a look if you have the time, these are Yet Another Overlord Fanfic and Yet Another Shield x Fate Crossover, thank you.
