Jane's heart thudded painfully in her chest as she saw the impact the bullet had near where she was positive Maura's head was. Anger surged through her body as she ignored her training, ignored what she had learned in the academy. She stepped out from behind her cover and fired at the man in front of her as he turned to her, dodging her first two shots. Her wife had nearly been hit by the bastard in front of her and she couldn't hold back the rush of emotions that swirled through her mind.
Dean was the reason she had lost out on time with Maura, why she hadn't been around for her son's birth.
Dean's weapon fired at her as he stumbled backwards, his eyes wide as his fear began to get the better of him. Jane knew she should have killed him when she had the chance. The moment she had entered Maura's office all those years ago. She advanced on him as her eyes took in Frankie running towards where Maura had disappeared down the alley, Korsak was beside her with his gun raised.
"Put it down Dean." Korsak spoke angrily, his eyes narrowed on the man.
Dean fired off more shots, causing both Jane and Korsak to dive sideways to avoid being hit. Jane wanted to kill him, to take from him what he had stolen from her, her life, but the Detective inside her was too strong as she shoved herself back to her feet and the sound of sirens filled the air. She launched into a sprint as Dean ran towards the concrete stairs, a blood trail leading her in his direction when he disappeared at the top.
Korsak huffed beside her as they ran up the stairs, her legs taking them three at a time. At the top she followed the trail of blood with her gun raised seeing Dean slowing down as his blood loss grew, "It's over Dean!"
He stumbled as he turned his gun back to her, the click as he pulled the trigger seeming to echo around all of them. He shook his head as he stumbled to the edge of the sidewalk.
Jane kept her eyes on him, her hands gripping her service weapon tightly, "There's no escaping this."
He turned to face her finally, his breathing ragged and blood running slowly from his mouth and dripping down his chin as he shook his head, "Why her?"
She glared at the man, her teeth clenching tightly for a moment before she spoke, "Because she is everything."
Dean grunted, his white button up shirt bathed in crimson as his blood pumped from his body with every beat of his heart, "We could have been great together."
She glared at him as disgust boiled in her stomach, "I wouldn't stoop so low."
Dean smirked at her before stepping off the sidewalk, "Guess we'll never know."
She frowned as he took a large step backwards and her body jerked as a large delivery truck replaced Dean. Her eyes widened as the sickening sounds filtered through her ears and reached her mind. Her body went cold as the sounds of tires screeching across the pavement filled the air. The sudden silence was deafening as Korsak rushed past her. Her heart hammered in her chest, her breathing becoming shallow, as her brain struggled to comprehend what had just happened.
Korsak appeared beside her, "Ambulance is in route, he's barley breathing though."
She felt her body jerk back into the present as Maura's face filled her thoughts, "Maura!"
She spun on her heel and sprinted back the way she had come, pushing all thoughts of Dean out of her mind.

Maura stared wide eyed at the man in front of her, the memory of seeing him last rushing through her mind, "How?"
Hoyt grinned, "Surgery and chemo. All worked out in the end. I'm surprised that Dean missed. I heard the gunshots."
She shook her head, "Dean let you free, why?"
"Now why would I give you all the answers right away Doctor Isles? No, I want to play a game and you, and Jane are going to be my opponents." Hoyt smirked at her, his blue eyes shimmering in excitement, "Where is Jane?"
"Maura!"
Maura refused to take her eyes off the man in front of her as Frankie's voice echoed off the buildings around them. She was struggling to accept that Hoyt was standing in front of her, however she knew it was true.
Hoyt grinned at her as a black SUV stopped near the curb behind Hoyt, "That's my cue to leave, but I am already looking forward to seeing you again Doctor Isles."
Frankie appeared beside Maura with his gun drawn and his eyes on Hoyt, "Freeze."
Hoyt smirked at him as he shook his head, "I don't think you want to do that. The good Doctor is in the cross hairs." His eyes snapped to Maura, "You really think I would come unprepared?"
She glanced up, her eyes squinting through the bright sunlight, taking in the tall building across the street from where they stood. A bright red dot appeared on her chest causing her to glance down at the unmoving sight.
Frankie quickly lowered his weapon as he stared at the dot on his sister-in-law's chest, his heart slamming into his throat.
Maura's head raised slowly, and her hazel eyes met blue, "How did Gabriel get to you?"
Hoyt chuckled as he backed towards the SUV, "We both wanted the same thing. I want to kill Jane and, well… You know what he wanted with her."
Maura's hands clenched into fists at her side as her anger flared, an uncontrollable wildfire that began to burn her from the inside out. After everything she had been through the only thing that could ever affect her in such a way was going to be Jane. She would die before anyone hurt Jane again and she could see the determination in Hoyt's eyes as he spoke, her body taking an involuntary step forward.
"Ah, I wouldn't do that Doctor." Hoyt smirked as the red dot moved quickly from her chest to her forehead.
She glared at the man in front of her, "Dean couldn't break me, what makes you think you can?" The red dot dropped to her chest, hovering above her heart.
Hoyt grinned at her, "It's not you I want to break. Jane is the one I want to break. You are just going to be the one I'll use to do it. It'll be so much sweeter than anything else I've ever done. I'll see you around Doctor Isles, oh and one more thing." He slipped into the back of the SUV and stuck his head out the window, "That's now on a motion sensor. You move and you die. I thought I'd give myself some time to get away. Good luck." His smile widened across his face, his teeth showing slightly as the vehicle pulled away from the curb.
Maura stood completely still, feeling her body tense to keep from moving at all. She could hear Frankie's frantic voice as he called for SWAT. She could feel his eyes on her as she struggled to remain completely still, but her mind was so chaotic.
The idea that Hoyt was going to continue what Dean had started wasn't comforting but, in a way, she knew he didn't have the resources that Dean had. She was positive that her father and O'Brady would be able to track Hoyt before the creepy man could make a move. The only problem was that her father was still a wanted man and had to tread carefully until Jane could get him off the most wanted list.
She stared straight ahead as the SWAT team joined them a few minutes later, Frankie being escorted away even as he protested. She let her mind focus on Jane as she remained still, her body beginning to ache as she held one position for so long. She lost track of time as she let Jane's face fill her mind, the love she felt for the woman filling her body to the brim, helping to keep her relaxed.
It wasn't until she heard Jane's raspy harsh voice call out to her that Maura returned to the present, "Maura!"
Maura didn't move but she could feel her legs beginning to tremble, the time she had been immobile finally beginning to make itself known. She listened to the voices around her, closing her eyes to focus intently on Jane's.
"What the fuck is going on Frankie?" Jane snapped angrily, having seen the SWAT team surrounding the area as she and Korsak returned from chasing Dean. Seeing Maura standing alone in the middle of the alley had set her adrenaline surging through her body and seeing Frankie pacing behind the small barricade hadn't helped anything.
Frankie shook his head angrily as he ran his hand through his shaggy hair, realizing he needed a haircut, "Hoyt. Janie Hoyt is alive. He's working with Dean."
Jane felt her blood run cold as she looked back over at her wife, "Is she okay? Is she hurt?"
Frankie shook his head, "There's a sight trained on her. Hoyt said it was on a motion sensor…" He shook his head unable to say the rest, "Their going as fast as they can to get to it, but they aren't sure which floor, what room, or what device their dealing with yet."
Jane felt her body tremble as her eyes remained glued to her wife, "Maura I'm right here. I love you."
Maura smiled softly and let her body relax slowly, Jane's voice soothing her tension. Jane was safe. Jane was with her, near her at least, but Jane was with her. She knew she could overcome anything as long as Jane was with her. She took slow deep breaths to keep her panic at bay, to stop herself from turning to the woman she had just married not even an hour ago. She had to stop herself from speaking because she knew if she did then she would lose it, breaking down was so not a good idea in that moment.
Jane stared at her wife as the silence stretched between them and she felt her heart clench in pain. Why wasn't the woman talking to her? She couldn't just sit back and watch. She had always jumped into action when it came to the people she loves, but this was different. She had tried to do so much when Maura had disappeared that now, now it was almost as painful as then having to stand there and do nothing.
A radio crackled to life and a voice echoed around the small alley, "We found it." Silence descended on them for another few minutes before, "Attempting to disarm it."
Two SWAT men moved towards Maura as the woman's body began to tremble from exhaustion and pain. She wasn't sure how much longer she could stand there, unmoving, not being able to see Jane. She glanced down at the red dot that was fixed firmly to her chest and held her breath as the radio crackled to life.
Jane watched, her body already leaning forward ready to move, as they waited, the sound of static echoing through the radio.
The silence was heavy as a palpable tension settled over everyone, feeling like a lifetime had already passed.
Suddenly a large explosion shook the earth just as a shot rang out through the Boston sky. Glass fell to the earth, scattering on the street below as Jane watched Maura drop to the ground with the two SWAT men beside her. Her heart shattering into more pieces than the glass that littered the street in front of them.
