Chapter 27- Shurima
Runeterra, Shurima, Azir's Palace
Sara gently wet a cloth and pressed it to Sivir's wounds. The Shuriman woman hissed in pain.
"Watch it!" she snapped.
Sara shot her a look and said. "Hey, I'm trying to help you here."
Sivir glared at her but didn't speak.
"So you're what? An archaeologist?" Sara asked.
Sivir's face scrunched up in confusion. "What the hell is that?"
Sara stared at Sivir for a few moments before shaking her head. Guess archaeologists didn't exist on Runeterra.
"Never mind." She mumbled.
Sivir groaned and laid back as Sara dabbed the cloth, making the Battle Mistress clench her teeth.
"We're done. I'd recommend you don't move for at least a day or two." Sara shrugged.
"I've got things to do! I'm missing my paycheck for this." Sivir groaned.
"Hey, I didn't make the rules," Sara shrugged. "You healed faster than I thought you would."
She was still confused over that. It was almost as if even normal humans like Xin Zhao were superhuman.
The thought of Xin Zhao made her wince. She hoped he was alright, since she hadn't seen him in over 5 years.
The thought of Xin Zhao made her thoughts trail off back to her home world…simpler times.
"Boy, I would give my left arm to just hug my mom again." She muttered to herself. Sivir had laid back, paying no attention to her.
Sara looked at Sivir, before turning to walk out of the room. After his spectacle, Azir had constructed a giant palace.
As she walked down the hallways, she looked around. It was made of gold and jade, with red gems in the walls.
Sara walked out of it, coming to a huge pedestal overlooking a city. Azir had used his powers to literally bring the city out of the sunken sands.
She heard something and turned as Azir walked next to her.
"Emperor." Sara greeted respectfully. She still wasn't sure what to think of this bird-headed guy. During her 5 years on Runeterra, she had seen quite a bit of stuff that defied the imagination, but this was on a whole new level.
"Sara Lance." Azir said, his voice rumbling.
"So…you're an Ascended." Sara said awkwardly.
"Indeed I am. Shurima's Emperor has returned." Azir said firmly.
"And what happens now?" Sara looked around.
Azir looked at her, his eyes hardening.
"Shurima will bend the knee to me," Azir declared. "And afterwards I will take revenge on Xerath."
"Who?" Sara asked, looking over at him in confusion.
"My former friend. He betrayed me, and caused the downfall of Shurima." Azir spat in anger.
Sara's eyes widened. Oh, that's why.
"Um, okay." She said weirdly. The giant golden Sun Disc glowed brightly in the sky. From what she had heard, that was the source of Azir's power.
Sara stood outside on the balcony overlooking the desert. Slowly, she began moving in a circle, her palms facing outward.
Her knee was feeling well enough for her to be able to practice ancient Ionian martial arts moves that Lee Sin had taught her.
"Didn't expect to see you out here." Sivir said gruffly from behind.
Sara turned to see the Battle Mistress leaning against a pillar, an amused expression on her face.
"You're better." Sara commented.
"Yeah." Sivir shrugged.
Sivir then turned to walk away, but Sara gripped her arm.
"Where are you going?" she asked, frowning.
Sivir gave her an annoyed glare. "What are you, my mother?"
"No, but you're still injured. It's not a smart idea to go out into the desert." Sara warned.
"I've been living out there for 22 years," Sivir snarled. "I think I can handle it from here."
Sara gave her a glare, but Sivir returned it unflinchingly.
Sivir was about to say something, but was cut off by a polite cough from behind. Both women turned to see Azir standing there.
"Emperor." Sara greeted neutrally.
"The people of Shurima are beginning to gather here, at the Capital," Azir reported. He was about to continue but stopped.
"What is it?" Sara asked.
"Someone else is here," Azir said. "Someone…familiar."
Sara and Sivir traded confused looks, but Azir was off in his own world. At that moment, a loud horn blew, echoing for miles around.
Azir turned and teleported in a tornado of sand.
"What the hell just happened?" Sara shook her head in confusion, before noticing something out of the corner of her eye.
"The hell is that guy?" she asked.
Down below at the entrance to the palace was a dog-headed person. It stood at least 10 feet tall, and had dark purple skin.
The being's eyes glowed blue and it wore pieces of golden armor, while carrying a one sided battle ax in its hand.
"That's Nasus!" Sivir said, her eyes widening in a mixture of shock, surprise and realization.
"Who?" Sara frowned.
"He is a legend told among the peoples of Shurima," Sivir explained. "He is known as the last Ascended."
Sara looked over at her in surprise. So this Nasus guy was an Ascended?
"Explains why he looks like Anubis." She quipped.
"Who is Anubis?" Sivir asked, puzzled.
"Never mind." Sara muttered, though Nasus bore a strange resemblance to the Egyptian God of the Dead.
'Seems that Shurima is like Ancient Egypt in more ways than one.' She mused to herself.
"Come, let's go." Sivir said rather reluctantly, turning to walk through the palace and down below.
Sara and Sivir emerged into the throne room together, where the hulking Nasus was speaking to Azir.
"I never thought I would see you again, Azir." Nasus spoke. His voice was as smooth as silk, yet soft and echoey at the same time.
"Neither did I, old friend." Azir said respectfully.
Both Ascended beings turned to face Sara and Sivir. Nasus narrowed his eyes.
"What? Something on my face?" Sivir asked dryly.
"You wield the Chalicar of Shurima," Nasus spoke calmly. "Only a direct descendant of the Emperor can do that."
"Wait…" Sara was about to speak, but Sivir beat her to the punch.
"Are you suggesting that bird guy over here is my billion times grandfather?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes he is. I can sense it in your blood." Nasus gently, trying not to startle her.
Sivir's eyes widened as she slowly backed up, realization beginning to set in.
She quickly turned to walk away.
"Sivir, wait!" Azir called out, but she disappeared around the corner.
"I'll talk to her." Sara assured, following Sivir and leaving the two Ascended beings behind.
Sara found Sivir sitting on the balcony, overlooking the setting Sun, which has turned orange at this point.
"You okay?" Sara asked carefully.
Sivir looked over at her blankly. "What do you think, smartass?"
"Right, stupid question." Sara murmured. She sat next to Sivir.
"I'm the descendant of a God-Emperor." Sivir said in a state of disbelief.
"Yeah, that's gotta be a tough pill to swallow." Sara agreed.
"What is a pill?" Sivir frowned.
Sara stared at the Battle Mistress, then sighed.
"This world is more medieval than I thought." She groaned.
"This world?" Sivir now looked even more confused.
"It's a long story. I'll explain later." Sara sighed.
Sivir sighed and looked ahead.
"Listen, Sivir, you don't need to leave. Not all those who wander are lost," Sara said gently. "We are not those who have been."
Sivir didn't look convinced, and instead continued staring ahead.
"All right, well, I'll be here if you need someone to talk to." Sara sighed, getting up.
Later
Nasus led Sara and Azir into a giant library. Massive shelves the size of small buildings hovered in the air all around. The trio stepped onto a blue glowing arcane disk.
"This is your library, Curator?" Sara asked.
"Centuries of knowledge accumulated." Nasus replied proudly.
Sara looked at Nasus, still unable to get over the fact that he resembled Anubis.
"Yes, Lady Lance, I know I look like your God, Anubis." Nasus said flatly.
"Wait…how do you even know about that?" Sara froze in her tracks.
"Yes, how do you know about that?" Azir asked as well, though he had no idea who Anubis was. He had sensed that Sara was from another world, tales of the Multiverse had been told in Ancient Shurima.
Nasus turned to face Sara with an amused smile. "I have been to other worlds before, Lady Lance. I have never met Anubis, but I have heard of him."
"Anubis does exist?" Sara asked, her eyes practically bulging.
"In some worlds, yes," Nasus replied. "On others, he is a mere myth. A fabrication created by mortals."
Sara blinked and looked down, trying to process this.
"Wow."
"Heh, you're not exactly the first person I've met who was from another world." Nasus chuckled.
Sara looked over at him curiously, but felt the disc she was on start shaking. The library began shifting and turning all around.
Nasus muttered something that sounded like Spanish.
"What language was that?" Sara asked.
"Ixtali, from the land of Ixtal." Nasus replied.
"Sounds like Spanish." Sara muttered.
"You can understand what I am saying?" Nasus asked.
"Some of it," Sara shrugged, before switching to Spanish. "Belleza, incanto e nostalgia, fierirono la menta mia."
Azir's eyes widened. It sounded similar to Ixtali, which he had studied, but different at the same time.
"Not bad," Nasus chuckled. "You would almost pass off as someone from Ixtal."
"You must be hungry, Sara." Nasus said, facing her.
"Uh yeah, I am." Sara blinked again. At the thought of food, her stomach growled.
"I will have someone bring you something to eat." Nasus said kindly. He snapped his fingers. A creature with purple feathers and golden armor appeared. Its face was hidden behind a mask and its body looked thin. Its chest was heavily built, but its waist looked like the size of bamboo.
"Reaper, fetch this young woman some eggs, fish and bread." Nasus instructed calmly.
"Of course, Curator." The Reaper bowed and disappeared into the shadows.
"What…is he?" Sara asked carefully.
"He is a Baccai," Nasus explained. "Mortals who failed to Ascend properly. Their bodies are now a twisted amalgamation of what a true Ascended is supposed to be."
"I thought any Baccai fled Shurima." Azir stated, crossing his arms.
"Some have. Some guard the ancient tombs below the sand. But many serve me here in this Great Library." Nasus shook his head.
"Oh!" Sara said in realization. A thought popped into her head. "What are Darkin?"
Nasus jerked back slightly, looking pained.
"Darkin are God-Warriors who were traumatized by the horrors of something called The Void War, as well as self infliction by the use of Blood Magic," Nasus explained. "After we defeated something called the Void, many were lost and broken."
"Like Varus." Sara realized, remembering Varus mentioned he was one.
"He was one of us," Nasus nodded sadly. "The best archer in all of Runeterra. He would kill enemy generals and champions with ease."
"What happened to him?" Sara pressed.
"He fought in an event called The Great Darkin War. After it ended, Varus, like all other Darkin, was trapped inside his weapon, a mystical bow. A golden armored Warrior-Queen trapped him inside a temple in the land known as Ionia." Nasus said.
"In Pallas." Sara whispered.
"Yes," Nasus said. "How do you know him?"
Sara winced, the memory and pain returning to her.
"I fought him in Pallas. He was about to escape, when I fought him, but he defeated me and broke my leg. I never saw him again." Sara said, breathing heavily, as phantom pain from the memory shot up her knee.
Nasus and Azir exchanged horrified looks.
"Oh this is bad." Nasus muttered, sighing.
The Baccai Reaper returned, holding a plate full of fish, scrambled eggs and a small piece of bread on a plate. Steam rose from it, and Sara's stomach rumbled at the smell.
"Thank you." She said gratefully.
Nasus was about to respond when his eyes narrowed.
"Someone is close by." He said.
"Who?" Sara looked at him in confusion.
Outside the capital, Varus stood on a hilltop.
"Where are you, sister?" he asked.
And this is done too.
So a new champion has appeared and it's Nasus aka The Curator of the Sands.
His lore by itself is average, but combined with Azir's is much better, IMO. Though right now he's still depressed.
Hope all the interactions were enjoyed, especially between Sara and Sivir. Those were fun to write.
Ixtal is based on Spain, so I think Sara would be able to understand bits of it, especially since she can speak Spanish.
I think Nasus is old enough that he would have been to other worlds in the Multiverse before.
The part about Anubis is not meant to be anything special, just acknowledging that there are Earths where Anubis does exist.
That and a pot-shot at the fact that Nasus before his rework looked like discount Anubis.
But now Varus is here, which is not good. Next chapter is going to be something special, and none of you are gonna see it coming.
Hope everyone enjoyed and see you all next time with another chapter.
