Chapter 5- Conversations with Dead People
Sunnydale, night time
Peter was swinging around as Spider-Man, and saw a mugger threatening a lady with a knife, so he fired a web at the thug's leg, hanging him upside down as he dropped his knife, and then he webbed the thug up completely.
"Have a great day….I mean, great night, ma'am", Peter quipped to the lady as she waved at him with a 'thanks' and he waved back before swinging away onto a building, and then running, he reached a corner.
"Well, this was-"
He was cut off when he heard a grunt behind him, and turned to see 2 people, looking sick and greenish, coming towards him with growls.
"Uhhh, you people okay?"
He then noticed they had claws and small tails, and realized. "Guess not."
One of them swung his claws but Peter flipped back to avoid and kicked him on the face, sending him flying off, and dodged the next one's blow, kicking his back, and he was off too. He then fired webs at them both and brought them together before webbing them into a hard cocoon, and swinging off, dropped them near the police station before swinging onto a building, and crouched there.
"Guess I should tell the others."
"What? I'd love to know."
Peter paled at the voice, then turned around as his eyes widened in horror on seeing it was who he thought it was.
"Uncle Ben?"
Willow was studying at the Sunnydale Library when she suddenly heard Tara. "Hey Will."
Willow turned to see Tara walking to her from behind the stacks to her table, and Willow was confused. "I thought you were staying?"
"Figured you could use some company", Tara shrugged as she sat down in front of her.
"I wasn't sleeping, was I?" Willow inquired, as that would have been embarrassing.
"No, no you weren't", Tara assured her kindly. "Remember when I sang to you on the bridge?"
"Oh I do", Willow said with a fond smile. "It was amazing."
At the house, Dawn was talking on the phone, sitting in front of the television, eating gooey marshmallow. 'Silence of the Lambs' was playing on TV, and right now it was the scene where Clarice Sterling was talking to Hannibal Lecter in his cell.
Dawn said to the phone. "Oh, come on. She is so dead. Well, he's clearly a psychopath. Is so. What? No, that is not Tom Hanks, its Anthony Hopkins. Well, what channel are you on?" There was a knock. "OK, there it is again. I keep hearing this, like, thumping." She muted the TV and there were more knocks. "No, I-I can't tell if it's?"
The front door flew open. Dawn went to investigate, and a strong wind was blowing into the house. She struggled to shut the door. Dawn said to the phone. "Kit, are you there? Is there a storm?"
Suddenly, the TV was unmuted, playing loudly. She tried to mute it again, but the remote control button didn't have any effect. She tried the power button on the TV itself, but it didn't work either. Finally, she tried to unplug it, but the movie still played with the cord out of the wall.
Dawn's eyes grew wide with fear.
Buffy was walking around in the cemetery, when she saw a guy knocked out nearby, and ran to him, turning him over. "Hey, you okay?"
He was a young man, the same age as her, and he groaned as he came to, recognizing her. "Buffy? Am I dreaming or are you Buffy Summers?"
Buffy backed off as he picked himself up. "Do I know you?"
"Oh, uh. Webs? Holden Webster. We went to school together. European History. I let you crib off my Vaclav Havel essay that time. You, you really don't remember me?" Holden Webster seemed dejected at not being remembered.
Buffy tried to play it off. "Sure! Sure."
At the house, Dawn was scared. Mexican music was playing loudly. The TB won't shut off and was playing 'Silence of the Lambs' loudly.
Dawn smashed the TV with an axe and broke it. She smashed the stereo as well. The music was still coming from the kitchen.
She walked to the kitchen and saw the radio playing the Mexican music. She walked further into the room, hoisting the axe, when the microwave oven suddenly came on.
"Oh, God. Oh, God..." She smashed the microwave, causing a tiny explosion and shattering glass on the floor. She backed away from the explosion, but she was in bare feet and the shattered glass cut her.
The radio on the kitchen counter was still going. Suddenly, tuning sound came over the radio, causing the music to fade and a voice came over the radio.
"Dawn?"
Dawn was horrified as she recognized the voice.
"Mom?"
Spike had hung out with Clem and was back on his way home when he heard someone behind him, and turned around as his eyes widened in horror.
"Dru?"
"Hello Spike", she greeted him with a crazy smile.
"But you…I dusted you!" Spike snapped.
"Darla was dusted too, remember? And we both were dusted when fingers were snapped", Drusilla reminded as she started pacing around Spike, while he held a stake at the ready.
"Do not bother, I am beyond that now", Drusilla mocked Spike. "And you can be too."
Now Spike frowned.
Tara had finished reading at her home and walked to shut off the lamp.
"Baby bear? Oh Goddess, you really lost all respect for yourself after I died, didn't you?"
Tara froze, recognizing the voice but not trusting her ears.
"M-mom? Is that you?"
A derisive snort was all she got in response, before getting a derisive tone.
"Who else would it be, the Easter bunny?"
Tara turned around, and for the first time in a long time, she saw in front of her Hannah Maclay, her dead mom! She had brown hair like Tara, and had a white robe on her.
"H-how did you get here? How are you still alive?"
The older Maclay just shook her head in disgust.
Holden tried to remind Buffy of when he had met her. "OK, um, junior year, spring production of Pippin, uh, I did the lighting design."
"I didn't see it."
"But you'd helped me move the lighting board, and I dropped it on your foot."
"Right, foot", Buffy pretended to remember. "Yes, of course. History class. It's all coming back. Sorry."
"Well, you know, it's not like I was a big part of your life or anything."
"No, its just been a while, you know?" Buffy told Holden.
Holden nodded. "Oh, yeah, well I got into to Tae Kwon Do in a big way at Dartmouth, so..."
"That's great."
"Yeah."
"So what have you been up to?"
"Well, I became a therapist a while ago", Holden revealed as they walked, surprising her.
"Wow! Congratulations", Buffy complimented, leaning on a nearby headstone.
"Funnily enough, a patient knocked me out", Holden revealed, now shocking Buffy.
"But why?" She asked.
"No idea, he's weird", Holden told her. "Very new patient too."
Buffy's cell phone had fallen down nearby and was ringing but she didn't hear it.
Dawn was on the phone, frantic, bandaging her feet at the coffee table. "Buffy, come on, pick up. I don't know what to do!"
Dawn hung up the phone and picked up the radio that was in the kitchen before. She shook the radio. Joyce was lying on the couch behind her in the same position as she was when Buffy found her dead.
She cried. "Do it again! I heard you."
Dawn stopped and turned slowly to look at the couch behind her, but it was empty. The lights went out for a second. When they came back on, Dawn could see that all the dining room chairs had been placed upside down on the dining room table in the next room.
The weapons chest had been turned on end, spilling its contents onto the floor. She looked around, frightened, and saw a message written on the wall in blood: "Mother's Milk is RED Today", and there was a bloody handprint below it.
The lights dimmed again for only a moment, and when they came back on, the message was gone and the weapons chest and the dining room furniture were back in their normal configurations again. Dawn shivered. There was a knocking sound: knock, knock, knock.
"Why are you doing this?!
Knock.
"Why are you? I don't understand." Knocking continued. "Stop. Stop it! Stop it! Stop it! Aah!"
The knocking stopped.
"Hello?"
Knock.
"Once for yes..." She said out loud. "Once for yes, twice for no. Mom?" She looked around.
Knock.
"Mom, it's you?"
Knock.
"Are you OK?"
Knock. Knock.
"You're not. Mom... mommy... are you alone?"
Knock. Knock.
The house started to shake, like an earthquake. A strobe light flashed in Dawn's face. Dawn screamed. Home decor was falling to the floor everywhere: lamps, pictures, vases, etc.
"Why are you doing this?!"
"How are you here?" Peter asked, taking off his mask.
"Oh Peter, you really tried so hard, didn't you?" Ben Parker said as he paced around Peter. "But coming here was irresponsible."
"What? What do you me-?"
"This place has nothing for you, you said you wanted to be responsible in my name, then why did you come here?"
"Tony's actions brought me under the Accords' radar, we needed to leave", Peter pointed out to Ben, but he was having none of it.
"Oh no, a real hero would have stayed and fought for the little guy instead of running", Ben said with a scoff. "Now you are here, happy with your girlfriend, not caring about others."
"What do you mean I can be too?" Spike asked Drusilla, still on-guard.
"Oh come on, you know you do not belong with them", Drusilla said, holding out her hand. "I made you for me, you can still come to my side, I will forgive you my Spike, yes, dust or not, I forgive you."
Spike just looked at her with narrowed eyes.
"Why are we talking about that?" Willow inquired to Tara in the library.
"Well, I wonder if I actually am under your spell", Tara said, and now Willow was confused.
"What do you mean, baby?" Willow asked her in surprise.
"After all that you did in my name, I cannot forgive you", Tara said, now shocking Willow.
"But you did back then!"
"I wouldn't! You put me under a spell!" Tara said, now glaring accusingly at Willow, who was horrified.
"I'd never do that!" Willow defended herself. "What happened, baby? Why are you saying all this?"
"Why did you betray our family, or forgive that woman for almost destroying the world?" Hannah demanded of her daughter. "You betrayed us by being with a dyke!"
Tara was completely nervous.
"But you said you were happy for me, and wanted me to find a nice girl!"
Hannah chuckled spitefully. "What else could I do? I only had one daughter - thank the Goddess - and you were so weak and pitiful and any kind of refusal would've completely broken you without any chance of recovery. I couldn't burden your father or Donny with a dead weight when they could still have some use for you at home. That is if you had wisely accepted their offer to help with the demon. All you had to do was to perform some menial housework, things that you already had down to pat. It's second nature for you anyway so why'd you oppose it - why did you decide slut around in college instead?"
Tara sharpened her blue eyes and stared cold daggers at her mother.
Dawn was alone at home. The power was out. She was standing in the middle of the living room, looking around. In the background, there was a sound something like a cross between roaring wind and a growling animal.
"I hear you. I hear you breathing. Are you hurting my mother? Are you keeping her from coming back to me?"
A strobe-like flash lit the room momentarily. A white-eyed Joyce is lying on the couch one second, and then gone the next.
"Mom? I see you. I'm coming towards you, OK?"
Another flash, and Joyce was lying on the couch screaming while a dark shadowy figure was choking her as she reached out toward Dawn.
"She's trying to talk to me. Get off her and let her talk to me!" She muttered to herself. "The axe!"
Dawn got down on the floor, crawling around looking for the axe. Suddenly the shadowy figure had the axe and swung it at Dawn's head. She screamed. It just missed her.
"Get out!"
Dawn ran toward the front door, which had swung open again. Wind was blowing hard into the house. She almost went out, but stopped in mid-stride.
"No!" Dawn shut the door. "She's my mother. I'm staying."
Joyce was on the couch. Her eyes flashed open.
"I know you will hurt people again, and make me forget", Tara snarled at Willow, who was now backing off, narrowing her eyes. "So you mustn't do it now."
"What do you mean?" Willow asked her.
"Come on Spike, my Spike, I love you, I love you for you, not soul, just you", Drusilla whispered into Spike's ear. "She loves soul, not you, just soul. She slays when there is none."
"What are you talking about, Uncle Ben? I stopped caring about people there in New York because I let being an Avenger get to my head", Peter defended himself to Ben, taking off his mask too. "In fact, I've never cared more about others than I have here."
"That's bullshit and you know it", Ben snarled at Peter, who looked confused. "Oh, look at little Parker Jr. You gonna cry?"
"Who are you?" Peter demanded, now tilting his head. "Uncle Ben made it a point not to say even 'bugger' in front of me."
'Ben' had a wicked smirk on his face, and then began laughing. "I spewed so much crap, and it was using a bad word that made you realize it was me. No surprise Tony could blackmail you so easily."
Dawn was sitting Indian-style on the living room floor, surrounded by white candles and thick books. She'd got one of the books open to a specific page. The strange breathing sound was still present.
"I know you're there. I will cast you out. My mother needs to talk to me."
Dawn was holding a bowl and sprinkled dust from the bowl on the ground in front of her. A force pushed her backwards across the room. She stopped when her back hits the wall, but she'd still got the bowl in her lap.
"I cast you from this place", Dawn sprinkled the dust. "It is your poison and your bane." She sprinkled some more when something scratched her face, leaving a bloody gash as she screamed, but continued sprinkling. "It is the skin that is cut from your flesh!"
A strong wind blew out all the candles. The living room window exploded inward, shattering pieces of glass all over her and the room.
Spike started laughing, as Drusilla now seemed surprised.
"Why laughing?"
"We never loved each other, Dru, we were just equally messed up over here", Spike pointed at his head and chuckled. "If we did, I wouldn't tie you up and torture you to make you love me again, would I? We are not our true selves without our souls, just perverted extensions of our worst parts."
'Drusilla' scoffed and sneered at Spike. "You are such an idiot, Spike. She really has you wrapped around her finger."
"She doesn't, you did", Spike told her in a determined tone.
"Don't lie to me, you hated it back home and wanted a better life for me, and the Demon thing is wrong, I got it identified by 3 different sources, including a guy who can read auras", Tara told her mom. "And even if I was, I am friends with a guy who has the Devil's kid inside of him, and he is one of the best people I know."
Hannah shook her head. "For now, when the Devil takes him over, he shall be unstoppable and shall destroy all. And your father got the information incorrect. The Demon is real, it just manifests on the 22nd birthday instead of 20th, and that's not far, my child. Leave this town and go back to your father and brother."
Tara's eyes now narrowed as she displayed a confidence her mother had never seen from her. "
"I have grown in power, and I have friends here, I have family. I have Willow, and you are not my mom, because she would never ask me to go back to my blood kin who made my life a hell", Tara said to 'Hannah', who gave a cruel, ugly grin. "What are you?"
The lights were still out. The window was busted in. Papers were blowing around. The room looked like a disaster area.
Dawn stood up and continued with the banishing spell.
"I cast you out with every prayer from every god that walked the Earth and crawled beneath", she was thrown across the room, bloodying her mouth, but continued. "I cast you out with the strength of those who love me." She stood. "I cast your out with the strength I have inside me! I cast you out into the void." She threw the bowl forwards. "That's right! Die, you bastard!"
The noise and wind stopped. Blood spattered all the walls, but then faded and disappeared altogether. The house was a complete wreck, but still now. Dawn whimpered and collapsed.
A golden light filled the room. Dawn looked up and saw a vision of Joyce standing there in front of her, beautiful and glowing, wearing a long white gown.
Dawn managed to push herself up on her arms and sat up.
"Mom?"
"So now you must leave this world, only then will you stop hurting people, and making me forget", Tara snarled at Willow, but she knew now it was someone else.
"Who are you?" Willow demanded. "Even if Tarebear was angry at me and made such accusations, she'd never ask me to kill myself."
'Tara' let out hysterical laughter. "The suicide thing went too far, didn't it? World would still be better off without you."
"Stop", Willow snarled.
"You people made my job easier, I'm going to show you Hell on Earth", 'Tara' told Willow before fading away from sight.
"I gave you a chance to be your true self, Spike, you spat in my face", 'Drusilla' sneered at Spike before fading away.
"Bloody fading", Spike scoffed.
"I was a gullible kid once, and irresponsible one before that", Peter told 'Ben' before declaring. "But no more, whoever you are, you will pay for using my uncle's appearance to taunt and guilt me."
'Ben' shook his head and said. "I wonder if you'll be that brave when I take over this place."
And he faded away.
'Hannah' gave Tara cruel grin. "Damn. I went too far huh? Have fun with your family before I swallow you all."
Tara remembered a phrase that had been brought up recently by Willow after a nightmare.
"Beneath you, it devours."
The form of her mother dissipated and reformed into a nightmarish demonic being.
"No, you pitiful vermin. I devour."
It vanished in a huge flash that burned out the bulb in the light stand, covering the room in silent darkness. After a few seconds Tara finally collapsed and started sobbing.
Joyce was standing there, all glowy and robed in white, talking to Dawn, who was still sitting on the floor.
"Things are coming, Dawn. Listen, things are on their way. I love you, and I love Buffy, but she won't be there for you."
Dawn was confused. "What? Why are you?"
'Joyce' told Dawn. "When it's bad, Buffy won't choose you. She'll be against you."
The vision of Joyce started to fade.
"No! No, don't go! Please, don't go!"
'Joyce' disappeared entirely.
Dawn, still sitting in the middle of the living room floor, sobbed.
"So, what did the patient do?" Buffy asked Holden.
"Don't know, he just convulsed, then knocked me out, and he was out here with me because he said he wasn't feeling well inside, so we took a walk", Holden explained. "He had just one arm, but it was strong, and I think he turned a bit greenish before I was out. And I thought I saw claws and a tail on him, but it was probably just my fainting mind making things up"
Buffy's eyes widened in horror. "What is this patient's name?"
"Can't tell you that, Buffy", Holden told her, shaking his head. "Confidentiality."
"Is it Curt Connors?"
Holden's shocked look was all the answer Buffy needed as he asked. "Why? Something wrong with him? You know him?"
"He teaches at the school", Buffy said before walking. "It was nice catching up with you."
"You too", Holden called out behind her.
She had seen Connors in the basement, he'd seemed out of it, she thought he did drugs, but every time she had seen the Lizard thing, it had always been in the basement too, and Holden said Connors had turned greenish and had claws and a tail.
He passed it off to imagination but Buffy knew there was more.
She wasn't completely sure, but she had a good idea about this- Curt Connors was the Lizard!
In a sewer line, the Lizard staggered around weakly before falling to its knees, and groaned as it turned back into a naked Curt Connors, now having only one arm again, as the giant lizard arm dripped to the ground in liquid form, and he let out a gasp.
In a bar, Carol Danvers was looking at the drink in front of her.
"Hit me", she slurred.
"Actually, I'd like to close this nice lady's tab."
Carol's eyes narrowed as she saw Bucky next to her. "What are you doing here, Barnes?"
"Well, let's see, you have been doing nothing but drinking since….." Bucky trailed off but Carol knew what he spoke of.
"I killed the Skrulls, they were my friends, I'd sworn to protect them", Carol said, having tears in her eyes.
"It wasn't you, as someone who has blamed himself for things he did while brainwashed, don't", Bucky assured Carol, putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Yeah, it will kill you otherwise", Natasha said, now sitting on Carol's other end, and she looked between them both.
After a few seconds of conflict, she pushed the glass away.
A few minutes later, Natasha watched Bucky drive Carol away, before sensing something.
She then leapt to a side, avoiding a robed figure leaping at her, and kicked the knife out of his hands, before sweeping another one's feet from under him, and as a third came, she drop kicked him away too.
Then she spun and grabbed another in a chokehold while kicking two more away, and finally snatched the dagger of the one she was holding, before using it to swiftly slice 3 of them.
That was it. She turned to see the one she'd grabbed trying to run but threw the knife at his foot, making him fall down, and pinned him down.
"You are going to tell me everything I want to know."
Well, this was hard.
The scene with Tara and the First as her mom was borrowed from Rutkowski's 'Chooser of the Slain' so thank you to him, though I modified the scene to fit my story too.
As for the rest, hope I did decently with them.
Man I had forgotten how hardcore the First had come after Dawn in this episode, poor Dawn.
I loved Holden so I got an excuse to give him a cameo either way, though he's not a Vampire here.
Why did the Bringers attack Natasha? Hmmmm…..
I dislike Carol so this will be her only scene in the story, but its sad I made her more compelling in one scene than MCU did in 2 films, including her own.
Jonathan and Andrew wouldn't have gone to the bad side without Warren to guide them, so they weren't here, but I do have a plan for the seal later.
Also, since you'd have seen the episode obviously, I think I didn't need to surprise you by revealing that 'Tara' was the First here, since you'd figure it out, and here since Tara's alive and well, using her as the First doesn't ruin her memory, and remember, First can become Tara due to her having been dusted by Thanos before being resurrected.
Also, 'Hannah Maclay' was played by Julianne Moore in this. And 'Ben Parker' was played by Tobey Maguire here.
Hope all enjoyed and see you all next time with another chapter.
