Just something that popped into my head while rewatching the seventh season of Charmed.
Hawbrook Mental Health Facililty
Afternoon
Paige was pacing back and forth on the front lawn, her mind racing with what she had learned. How could he do this, she thought to herself in a mix of despair and fury. Paige was broken out of her thoughts as she saw Darryl approaching her.
"What's going on Paige? You said you found something on Sheridan. So what are we doing here?" Darryl asked as he looked at the facility.
"Just…follow me," Paige said, unable to say it.
Paige walked over to the entrance as Darryl followed her, watching Paige in concern. Although he had his issues with the Halliwells, he still considered them family and could see that Paige was in pain. And considering who she had been out with, he had a pretty good feeling what was causing it. Or rather who.
"What did he do Paige?" Darryl asked as they walked inside.
Paige pointedly ignored his question, leading him over to a room. Pushing the door open, she and Darryl walked inside. Getting the hint, Darryl looked around. It didn't seem like anything but an ordinary office, a desk with a computer included. Then Paige walked over to a door behind it and gestured him over. As Darryl reached the door, Paige pushed it open.
As he stepped inside, Darryl couldn't contain the gasp of horror that left his lips. The room was completely empty, save for a bed with someone in it. Sheridan stared at the ceiling, her eyed unfocused. Darryl walked over, seeing an IV in her arm that was obvious pumping her full of some kind of drug.
"I knew he did something to her," Darryl muttered as he checked her over. "Sheridan, Sheridan can you hear me?"
Paige simply watched this, knowing what she had to do now.
Kyle Brody's apartment
Later
Kyle was sitting on his couch, a beer in his hand as he stared aimlessly. Seeing the flash of light, he looked up as Paige materialized a foot from him, an unreadable look on her face. It was silent for a moment.
"How could you?" Paige finally asked, sounding as devastated as she did angry.
"I was trying to protect you, to protect your secret," Kyle tried to justify himself as he got to his feet.
"No. You were trying to get close to us, to get close to our magic so you could stop the Avatars," Paige said, looking at him like he had kicked her puppy. "Everything you'd done…it's all been about your obsession with the Avatars."
"They killed my parents Paige! They're evil!" Kyle shouted.
"And what are you?" Paige asked, stopping him cold. "We don't play judge, jury and executioner. Our job is to protect, not punish."
"That's all I'm trying to do Paige!" Kyle shouted.
"How is what you did to Sheridan protecting the innocent?! For months, you had her locked up in there! Who knows if she'll ever recover!" Paige shouted, at her wits end.
"I was trying to protect you and your sisters! And yeah, I had ulterior motives, but Sheridan was onto you long before I came along! I did what I had to do!" Kyle justified himself.
"And so Sheridan was collateral damage. An innocent was collateral damage to you," Paige said, looking at him like she didn't know him. "I protect the innocent. And yeah, sometimes I have to do things that don't make me sleep so well because of it, but I never sacrificed an innocent to do it. And I can't-I won't be with someone who thinks that sacrificing an innocent is okay."
"Paige-" Kyle started but stopped when she held up a hand.
"Don't, just don't," Paige said, sounding like she was on the verge of tears. "I want nothing to do with you or your obsession anymore. Stay away from me and my family. I won't help you tear the world apart just so you can get revenge for something that may or may not have happened decades ago. Just…stay away from me."
Paige then orbed out, leaving Kyle alone. With a roar of rage, Kyle threw his beer into the wall, the glass shattering as he breathed heavily.
I have many issues with the rather lacking execution of the Avatar Arc of the seventh season, but the character of Kyle Brody and his relationship with Paige is at the top of that list.
To get it out of the way, Kyle was really just a fanatic. While he was right about the Avatars, he had no real reason to be suspicious of them or hate them. His vendetta is, at best, based on circumstantial evidence. None of his actions make any real sense and he comes off as obsessive and unhinged more than once.
Then there's the mess with Sheridan. While it's easy to dislike Sheridan, ultimately, she was just doing her job. And Kyle's response to this is to drug her to the point where he loses several months' worth of memories? The morality of that is shaky, at best. And Paige having no problem with that is not only unbelievable; it is really OOC for Paige. And Paige continues to become OOC until she is little more than his Yes-Man.
