I watched 'Edge of Tomorrow' on TV, seeing the film again after years and I still love it and as much as good the cliffhanger at the end was, one has to wonder 'What if?'

Disclaimer: I do not own Edge of Tomorrow.

Major William Cage had done this hundreds, maybe thousands of times before as a private but this time it was different because they had won. He entered the training area of the Heathrow base, where as usual, the beautiful woman, Rita Vrataski, the Angel of Verdun and war hero and idol of United Defense Forces, was exercising pushups before she got up on her feet and eying the officer approaching her as Cage put down his cap and Rita glared at him, already expecting him to make advances at her.

"Yes? What do you want?" she asked Cage rudely as she had done this countless of times before and Cage chuckled. Same response but this time it was different. Rita frowned, wondering why was he smiling. "Do I have something on my face, sir?"

"Sorry, it's just…" Cage said as Rita frowned. "You remind me of someone I know."

"Do I know you, Major?" she asked in confusion, noticing Cage's medal and ranking.

"You would have tomorrow. But today is a new day for both of us." Cage said and Rita looked confused. "Yesterday to me, tomorrow to you, you tell me to come find you, when I wake up. It's been a long day for me… but here I am, Sergeant Vrataski." He said with a chuckle and Rita immediately felt like if she had been slapped in the face, looking shocked and taken aback before it hit her.

"That energy surge in Paris this morning…" Rita realized.

"I'm sure you have a lot of questions, Rita. Would you mind asking them over a cup of coffee?" Cage said and Rita's eyes narrowed. How would he know she liked coffee, unless…

Later, Cage was with Rita in the cafeteria, where he mixed the sugar in the cup. "Three bags, right?" He said and if she was not sure before that Cage had acquired the power to reset time, this was the proof.

"Why have you come see me, Major? And I want an honest answer." Rita said and Cage took a breath.

"I wanted to see how you would finally enjoy the victory after fighting countless of endless battles and dying countless of death." Cage said with an understanding look.

"So you defeated the Mimics? You killed the Omega?" Rita asked.

"You and I did. Together. With some friends." Cage said, glancing at the J-Squad, who was at the corner of the cafeteria, bickering and joking around as Cage chuckled. They sure would stay the same before he gave her a saddened look. "You died. I died too… and then I woke up to find out that we've won."

He gave her a sad look and suddenly she understood. She had lived countless of scenarios where she had fallen for someone, only to lose him in the battle of Verdun or otherwise, since he was not going to remember her anyway. To Cage, Rita was someone he cared about very deeply, but to her, Cage was a stranger… for now.

"In the days you have relieved, have any of them…"

"…been like this?" Cage finished and Rita nodded, while he mixed the coffee in his cup. "I guess today's a new day for both of us."

This made them both chuckle and Rita felt some familiarity and common ground with Cage she didn't think she would but realized she should have expected. Neither of them had any idea where the future would take them this time, even though Cage wondered if he would reset the day again upon dying after getting the Omega Mimic's blood, but they were willing to see through the future where anything could happen.

Not sure about this but this is just my headcanon to what happens after the ending. Even after seven years, I still love the film and I was satisfied with the ending but it felt like it could have had a little more. There are rumors about a sequel and Doug Liman confirmed that it was in development but Emily Blunt said on Howard Stern's show (which you can find on YouTube) that due to the current COVID-19 situation it was unlikely that the sequel would happen.

Please review and let me know if you have enjoyed this one-shot.
