Summary: Dick and Wally fluff. Takes place about 2 days after Alpha Male (YJ S1 Ep 13) but 1 day before Revelation (YJ S1 Ep 14) Shorter than normal, but that's cuz I didn't wanna ramble on and I just wanted to get to the point since it's pretty straightforward
Disclaimer: I don't own DC
Dick came to the cave on Wednesday night expecting everyone to be enjoying themselves, but what he saw was quite the opposite. Artemis, Connor, and Megan were quietly sitting by a sofa watching Wally, who was sitting by the kitchen counter NOT eating anything and looking pretty depressed. Wally's not eating or hitting on Megs? What exactly happened? As Robin walked up to the others, Artemis turned to him.
"Hey, Rob. Can you go check on Baywatch over there? He seems...not like himself." Artemis was careful not to sound too worried about Wally, but Dick noticed her tense look and discontempt. Megan seemed even more worried about Wally and Connor seemed to be a mix of confused and worried. Dick nodded before walking over to Wally. Unbeknownst to him, Connor was listening in with his hearing and Megan had mind-linked the three of them up so she and Artemis could hear what Connor heard.
"Hey, bro. You good?"
"Yeah...peachy. Why?" His answer was hardly convincing.
"You don't seem to be feeling the aster. What's up? Did something happen with Uncle Barry?"
"No, no he's all good. It's, uh, it's just..."
"What? You know you can tell me. I won't tell the others if ya don't want me to." Wally seemed to de-tense the tiniest bit at that but still seemed distraught. He and Dick shared a special bond. They were closer to each other than almost anyone else. Even Bruce sometimes envied how close to Dick Wally could be. Needless to say, Dick was someone he trusted with his life, so he told him.
"My...girlfriend." From the mind-link, Artemis heard this and felt a pang of jealousy. She had so many questions. Wally has a girlfriend? Then why does he hit on Megan all the time? What does this have to do with him being gloomy? Did she die or something?
"Linda? Is she good?"
"Yeah...she's fine. She...she dumped me." Dick slowly nodded, understanding now. Linda was Wally's first ever girlfriend, and they were pretty close. She was almost as important to him as Dick was. People thought he was a wannabe ladies' man because of the way he hit on so many girls as Kid Flash, but the truth was that he only ever did that because he felt the need to not let anyone see what type of person he really was. Dick knew he used to be bullied a lot for being a science nerd and not having many friends, so he understood why Wally went out of his way to act like the bad boy whenever he was Kid Flash. But when he was around Linda he was almost a different person.
"Ya don't have to tell me if ya don't want to, but what happened?"
"She said that I'm rarely around nowadays to spend time with her, and she was kinda right. I missed like 3 or 4 dates in the past few weeks cuz I was too busy with patrol or the team. At first she thought I was cheating on her, but I told her I wasn't and I was just...busy. She then said that she didn't wanna be with someone who couldn't make time for her, so she left." Dick knew that Linda was unaware of Wally's alter ego. Barry didn't want him to tell her for fear of it getting out. He had tagged along on some of their dates, and he had noticed slight tension whenever Wally's absence was brought up, but he never thought it would go this far. From the mind-link, Artemis felt incredibly sympathetic to Wally. She had been in one or two relationships before, so she knew what he was feeling right now. However, a tiny part of her felt happy that Wally was now single, although she would never tell anyone that.
"Well, if she knew what you were really doing, she wouldn't be mad. You missed your dates cuz you were out savin' lives and catching bad guys. I mean, that's pretty amazing if ya ask me. Maybe you could, ya know, tell her?"
"Uncle B won't let me, and he's right, I guess. It's just...she was my only ever real relationship, ya know? And mom and dad keep on telling me how lucky I was to have her, and now she's gone. What if I don't find someone else? What if I'm just stuck alone for the rest of my life?" Tears began to form in Wally's eyes, but he didn't let them drop. He was pretty good at hiding his pain in certain instances. Not nearly as good as Dick was, but he certainly learned a thing or two from his best friend.
"Yeah..." Dick had never had a relationship before, so he had a hard time relating to Wally's struggle, but he could still sympathize with him. He knew that he and Linda were growing apart in the past few weeks, but she was still a big part of his life and he cared a lot about her. If only he could tell her why he was never around then maybe she would understand. "Well, you still got me. Bros for life, right? Plus, I'm sure the right girl is out there, somewhere. Maybe she's closer than you realize." Artemis and Wally both blushed at that. "You just gotta move on for now. Try to get your mind off her."
"How?" Dick paused for a minute before thinking of something.
"How's about we go for dinner. C'mon, let's take the bikes and just find some food around Happy Harbor. I'll pay."
"Thanks, but I don't-"
"If it helps, I'm not givin' you a choice. Plus, you and I both know ya can't resist a good meal." Wally smiled at that. "I'll race ya."
"You're on." The two walked to their bikes and drove off as the rest of the team stood there in thought. They knew that Wally and Robin were close, but they never thought they could be this close. It was comforting to know they really were best friends, plus it shed some more light on the elusive mystery of Robin. He was still a shadow in many ways to the team, as they knew almost nothing about him other than little bits here and there. Artemis made a mental note to check in on Baywatch once he and Rob would come back, and the three of them walked back to the TV to find something to watch.
A few hours later the two arrived back at the cave, both laughing and yelling some gibberish on how insane of a driver Dick was. As they arrived at the main lobby of the cave, Dick got a Batwave alert on his phone and ran to the Zeta tubes for patrol with Bruce. Before leaving, he looked back to Wally.
"So, ya good?"
"Hell yeah. Thanks for tonight." Dick smirked before running off. Alright, at least he's feeling better! Really sucks how Linda dumped him like that. I mean, she didn't know what he was doing, but it was pretty clear he cared about her. She shoulda had more faith in him. Thank god I don't have to deal with this nonsense! As the Zeta tubes announced Dick's departure, Artemis walked up to Wally.
"Hey, Baywatch. I heard about...ya know."
"Yeah..." Wally rubbed the back of his neck as the conversation went on.
"Anyways, sorry about that. For what it's worth, it's Linda's loss for letting you go. Seriously." Wally's face heated up a bit at that but he ignored it.
"Uh, thanks, I guess."
"C'mon. We're watching some random movies in the living room. Get your ass over there before Connor feeds Wolf all the snacks." Wally smirked and started to follow Artemis, but as he walked back, the familiar sound of Kent Nelson's voice echoed in his head. He smiled slightly as he thought to himself. He would definitely miss Linda, but at least he still had his best friend there to help him. Plus, he had the team. Not to mention a certain archer who was growing on him more and more by the second...
Sorry if this one was shorter than usual, but I didn't wanna ramble on endlessly. I thought this would be nice to both show that Dick and Wally were actually best friends, but also to explain why Wally grows closer to Artemis, cuz he and Arty seem to get way more friendly around episode 14 and so I thought this could be a nice explanation as to why. Next chapter is ep 14 of S1 and then will be ep 15 which is where Zatanna comes in. Fluff and non-plot-heavy chapters will be much more prominent after the episode where Zatanna loses her father, cuz that's where a lot of my ideas for chapters fit in. Anyways, feel free to review and leave suggestions if you have any. I really appreciate the support this book is getting. Next chapter up soon.
