Norwegian Tundra
Feb 21, 2022
Time: 22:00
It was the night of the operation, both fireteams readied themselves for the upcoming operation, everyone was suited up with a their personally setup helmet with quad tube NVGS, MOPP Level 4 suits and gloves covered their entire bodies with the exception of the face, their M50 gas masks were in a protected case on their person, above all that they still wore their plate carriers and battlebelts containing all of their extra ammo and other tools. A large parachute was on their backs with a O2 tank for oxygen with a spare chute strapped in front of their legs. The copter team CFVY was also suited to the same level of protection minus the parachutes. Their "runway" was a barren strip of Norwegian Tundra; it took several hours of leap frogging fuel and the actual copter here for the operation to begin. To the extent of anyone's knowledge they're just a seal team doing some cold weather training in the tundra
CFVY were already aboard the modified Chinook doing preflight checklists. The chinook had a larger, more powerful engine along with longer rotors to fly beyond its max altitude of 15,000ft. A layer of radar absorbing paint, and O2 tanks for the crew were added as well but all the upgrades came at the cost of sacrificing non essential items for flight, such as interior lights, all extra seating, and climate control.
Both teams made their way to the chinook while strapping oxygen masks to their face and stepped into the fuselage. Any trace of them being here was either brought on board with them or destroyed, left for nature to reclaim.
The time had come as the two giant blades began to spin as the ramp closed and the copter lifted off the ground. A sleek black tube with two rotors poking out of the top cut its way through the night air as it began to rise in altitude.
CBRN gear is already notorious for being hot and uncomfortable, especially at level 4 but compared to the frigid cold of the tundra at high altitudes.
"You need a barf bag Vomit boy" Yang asked playfully trying to distract everyone from the cold through the radio
"Fuck off Yang, the jokes getting old" Jaune responded annoyed.
"Hey don't give me the COLD shoulder" Yang respond with a chuckle
"Yang Xia Long, I'll throw you personally out of this helo" Weiss said in slight anger "The cold is already bad as it is, whos idea was it to fly an unpressurized chinook"
"In 2001 Green Berets ODA 595 Did something similar after 9/11" Ruby said " they made a movie about them"
"Still not the brightest idea" Ren said calmly "The temperature dropped well below freezing, no turning back now. Not like we can"
"Everybody knows that we signed a contract" Nora said playfully "Our asses are government property,"
"Hey Ice Queen you think its bad back there, try flying in this cold, Velvets chattering up here and I'm pretty sure i can hear Fox shaking from here" Coco said
"No shit I'm from the West coast. I'm not used to this cold, I'm freezing my ass off!" Fox yelled out
"I'm pretty sure everyone prefers the heat of the beach to this freezing copter" Velvet said clearly cold
"I feel ya, I prefer the heat" Blake said "Nothing beats the California sun"
"To quote Nora you signed a contract" Jaune said.
"Hey Hey, Ready up we're almost at the drop zone" Yatsuhashi said in a calm voice "ETA 10 minutes"
"LADIES READY UP" Ruby yelled out while grabbing her rifle
"NVGS ON GENTLEMEN LETS GET THIS SHIT DONE" Jaune yelled out
Everyone began gathering their gear and doing final checks "5 minutes"
"Everybody up! Ruby yelled out as everybody got up lined up in two lines, Ren and Yang were at the back with Nora Blake and Weiss in the middle, with Jaune and Ruby in the front "Parachute check!"
There were shouts of "Check" as they began checking each others parachutes
"30 second" Yatsuhashi called out, that statement immediately causes the anxiety in the craft to spike, the space between the seconds seemed to grow to an unbearably long then suddenly "GO GO GO!" he yelled out
They all began to pile out of the help into the cold air, each one of them felt their body begin to reach terminal velocity, clouds rushed by in the blink of an eye, the lights on the ground grew from dots on the ground to outlines of buildings . In the minute that felt like a few seconds they had crossed they crossed 850ft in altitude and opened their shoots, suddenly being yoinked upwards as the chutes begin to slow their descent, each one maneuvers the chutes to angle forwards with practiced ease as they continue to hurtle towards the ground. In the last moments they pull their chutes back and slow down just enough to have a rough landing.
Quickly they begin to strip their chutes and helmets. That slipped on their M50s before returning their helmets and NVGS on. The chutes are piled up and set with a thermite charge set to ignite at the end of the operation. They scan their surroundings before making their way to the compound.
"CVFY to Signal the package has been delivered" Coco said over the radio
"Signal to CVFY message received continue along set flight path for 550 clicks to LCAC for taxi to USS Fairbanks"Penny said watching the craft from satellite surveillance
"How long till they land" Ironwood said watching the various screens of the operation
"Approximately 80 seconds" Penny said " It's nigh impossible to track them from here"
"Keep me updated" Ironwood said
"Jimmy relax each has years of experience under their belt and countless missions executed they'll be fine" Ozpin said
"This is possibly one of the biggest missions executed since Operation Neptune Spear" Ironwood said in a professional manner
"No need to remind me I was there, I helped plan the operation just have faith with them"
"I do" Ironwood respond but before he could say more Penny interrupted
" I've got them they're making their way to the compound ETA 2 minutes" Penny said
"Shall we watch the fireworks" Ozpin said as cameras mounted on the side if each operatives head turned on
The screens were near pitch black, as the IR light couldn't be used to illuminate the area for the camera
"Let's pray this all goes to plan" Ironwood responded "We can't loose another operator"
"What occurred a few weeks ago was a tragic but unavoidable" Ozpin said plainly
"Maybe….maybe"
A lone White Fang Guard stands guard near his abandoned mine compound. His cold war era gas mask fogging slightly due to the cold and possibly a faulty seal. His rifle slung haphazardly around his torso.
"Greg, ya still there?" His radio call out
"Yeah I'm still here, Freezing my ass off" He said
"Don't worry you only got 30 mins left on your shift." the radio responded
"Yeah" Greg responded before a suppressed shot was heard. He was dead before he hit the ground
Both teams began making their way past the corpse with Ruby trailing behind, leaving her trusty Tac50 for a M110. The compound was more heavily guarded than the previous one, yet their defenses were still weak.
Guards were often alone and far away from others or watch towers. The towers themselves were only at the entrance and the rest of the terrorists there were either asleep or on their own patrol. Lights were set up haphazardly and rarely had overlap with other light sources. No cameras had overlapping views and some of them had either cracked lenses or were barley functioning.
Jaune took point while Ruby was covering their six. They were spread out, moving to cover individually but still close enough to each other that they could see each other moving carefully from shadow to shadow scanning their surroundings for any possible threats. In no time they reached the entrance of the mine. Stacking up they lifted up their NVGs then proceed through the compound
The mine was a long tunnel with several large metal arches and several tunnels spidering out. The mine as it was underkept and was looking unstable. The Metal arches were bent and corroded, rocks fell periodically and several tunnels had already collapsed with the only sign of the once being a tunnel there was the metal arch above it. The team thankfully didn't need to go through and clear each tunnel of the mine but did have to make it to the heart of the mine and kill or capture the primary and secondary HVTs.
Moving through the mine, all their nerves were at an end. Each uncollapsed tunnel is another route which an enemy could appear from. Bodies of several guards lay scattered across the floor from expertly placed shots from each of their rifles. After a few minutes of walking they came across what they could only assume to be the main command center for the mine. The large presences of Fang soldiers only added to the hypothesis
Ruby and Weiss stayed back a bit to allow Ruby to give overwatch, taking cover in the entrance to one of the collapsed tunnels. Jaune led the rest of the teams as they began to enter the main command room. In the back of their mind they knew there was a very real possibility of this mission going south and becoming a shoot out. But upon entering the open command room, everything changed.
The control room was an open circular room with various monitors and screens sent up along the front walls. Two paths extend from the left and right while a large metal table sat in the center with various consuls near the entrance. There were twelve Fangs in the room along with one of the HVTS, Adam Taurus. JNR plus Blake and Yang only had a few seconds to fire off a few shots and dive for cover before they were able to retaliate. 4 Fangs fell, one of which was to Ruby, Adam ,unfortunately, had positioned himself out of Ruby's line of sight with Ruby only getting a glimpse as he flipped the metal table for cover. Thus a shootout occurs. Alarms started to blare as the shoot out continued, the pounding of boots could be heard as guards from outside rushed to support their fellow troops.
"Signal this is Snow Angel of Death, cover's blown mission objective still obtainable do you read over?" Weiss called out over the radio only getting static with a few gurgles of words and a few missed shots from the encroaching Fang reinforcements.
"Ain't gonna work, We're too deep!" Ruby called out before a bullet hit near her rifle "Fuck, give me some covering fire!" she yelled out before firing a shot
Meanwhile in the command room, Ruby's shot connected with the head of a grunt. Half of the Fang grunts were now dead, with Adam still being alive. Ren was laying down some covering fire out of the left side of the entrance. Jaune, Blake, and Yang were returning fire, keeping Adam and his entourage in the command room from behind a console to the right of the door. Jaune leaned out the side of the console to give fire while Yang did the same the other side. Two more grunts fell while Nora got one trying to escape out of the right corridor. Blake quickly popped up her head and shot out a burst before ducking back down. Now there were only 2 grunts left and Adam. Jaune signaled for Blake and Yang to advance while Jaune provided cover, Nora got one of the grunts while he was leaning for an angle to shoot and Yang got the other while he tried to return fire. Adam had been popping up occasionally taking bursts with his AK but on his last burst Blake got a few shots at his chest finishing the magazine and forcing her to switch to her pistol, Blake was the first to cross their cover and see the dead. Adam however was still alive as he was wearing soft body armor, her 9mm had not breached the armor but it did knock him on his ass.
He stared into her eyes for a second before strained "Traitor, what happened to standing by your kind and your friends" clearly feeling both the hatred and the impact of the 9mm
"That was before you chose to lead them to kill innocents" Blake spat back clearly showing scars of memories long passed
"I'll kill you and every one you love you trai-" Adam said before Blake shot Adam in the head dead.
"I'll ask later for now we have to make it to the extraction. We can't go for the secondary HVTs" Yang said, putting a hand on her shoulder.
"I wouldn't be so quick to say that" Jaune called out pointing at the screen showing several grunts in heavy hazmat gear moving a box of wires and a canister, through the compound to the exit.
Ren examined the screen for a few moments before putting his hand on his headsets and saying "Be advised Red Reaper we possible have found a dirty bomb" through his comms
Howdy yall sexy motherfuckers
First off i wanna explain my thinking for the timing. So the starting of the story was in late Nov 2020, that hell hole of a year, and I figured training for all those special operations groups would take about two years ish, the unit was first established in Nov 2020, the first operation took place early dec 2022, and thus this operation in late Feb 2022. So the Atlas particle accelerator was being inspected by ironwood in early dec of 2022 from earth's perspective and also means it's a month till it has a test run. With the timing out of the way, I hope yall enjoyed trying to get back into writing as well as improving it. I have big plans for this story. Also I might rewrite Reemergence as I feel like I wrote it horribly and I've begun to replay all the Metro games and possibly have other ideas for it, though I will keep yall posted on it. I might also do a solely Warhammer 40k story about the lore of my home brew chapter but that's still up in the air. Anyways thanks for reading, hope y'all enjoyed it. Till next time.
