Quirks not Required
XIII
Kato and Aizawa stared at one another, emotions of shock and horror flooding Kato's body. Aizawa immediately wanted to strangle All Might.
"Someone gave you a powerful quirk, before your Hero Course Application."
Midoriya nodded "Well, first of all…that was stupid and heroically reckless of you. Second, does your guardian know?" Aizawa asked.
Midoriya froze. "Does your mother know?"
"No…"
Aizawa smirked beneath his capture cloth "I'll deal with that, Kato. Midoriya, I have the great pleasure of knowing your mother in the most professional capacity. Even if you've not told her, I'm guessing she knows or suspects."
Midoriya froze "H...h...how do you know my mother sensei?"
"Is she still practicing law?"
"She's keeping much longer hours, due to me."
Aizawa wanted to snarl, but kept his cool "I can almost guarantee that's not the case. I have no idea what your childhood was like…" He paused.
"It'd be a tragedy if the HSPC were accused or revealed to be discriminating against a heroically respected and hired practitioner of law."
Midoriya paled "Just what was my mother capable of? What did she do? She told me she worked in a store."
"Again, Midoriya. Kato, make sure he doesn't hurt himself too much."
(Midoriya Inko)
Inko wanted to pull her hair out. Here she was in her office, looking at a case file that had fallen into her lap.
It was a red file, with the name of 'Todoroki' written across it. Inside was a note "Help me" was all it said.
Intrigued Inko opened it. Her eyes widened and she turned pale, she knew the name Todoroki Touya. She'd been in the class above Todoroki Enji. Although she was Gen-Ed and he was Heroics. She'd gone on to UA's University Track and had qualified as a Soliciter and Lawyer, Hisashi worked as a Quirk and Hero Analysist, his specialisation was in breaking down quirks by just builds of the hero or the villains meant he was in constant demand.
As she analysed the paper thin file of Touya, it revealed a very grim fact. The Todoroki family had a long list of Quirk-Marriages, dating back to what was affectionately known as the 'Dark Days of Quirks'. The evidence for Touya's death was reported as accidental. Inko wanted to snort at that "Accidental my backside. There is no way you can coax a five year old to use his quirk that much. It is physically impossible, in elemental quirks there is definitive evidence displaying that the body is proportionally resistant to his own quirk. Unless the eldest Todoroki got unlucky with both parts of his genetics. There's also no evidence of any finger-prints."
She was distracted by her mobile ringing "Izuku! Is everything…"
She was interrupted by a rumbling laugh "Wrong person, Midoriya-san, it's Shota Aizawa, better known as…"
"Eraserhead!" From his end of the phone line, the Erasure hero grinned. It was fun getting in contact with old acquaintances.
"Is Izuku okay?"
"He's doing rather well, his quirk control requires improvement."
"Quirk control! He's been diagnosed as quirkless!" Inko all but hissed over the phone.
Eraserhead smirked, "Midoriya-san, is it possible to meet with you to discuss your son's rapid development."
Inko smirked on her end. She suspected something had happened to her son, the sand was a dead give away. "I can arrange to do it tomorrow…It'll have to be a working lunch."
"That'll be acceptable; I do have some questions for a case I'm working…" Eraserhead could tell that the lawyer was positively quivering with anticipation of their meeting. Internally, Eraserhead was wondering how badly a quirkless son could influence a family dynamic.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Eraserhead." With that Inko hung up. She looked back at the file in front of her. "I'm not going to get work on this case here…Something about it seems odd."
(Izuku)
The sweat was pouring down his body. As he was going through the paces of a kata being instructed by Kato-sensei, his brain was going haywire, Izuku eyed the medical staff member. As he focused, the source of the extra-sensory tension was stemming from the disabled member of staff.
"You've done well so far. With what's happening with you, due to our natural state we're more than likely going to turn our quirk on when we need it. Not having a quirk from quirked parents still gives us an innate instinct; much like breathing." Kato stated, he was impressed. "Midoriya trusts me…seemingly he does. Sensei, the Man-Child and AFO seem to think I'm on their side...although I might need to show the Man-Child, I can bend and twist a little."
"Midoriya, get cleaned up and scram. You've got better things to do than hanging out with me."
"What are you off to?"
Kato smiled "I have a Charity Borderlands 4 Live Stream to do. Raising money for one of my Hospital things. By things I mean NDA." With that the Wheelchair sitter rolled away.
Izuku let out a sigh, One For All was doing something. "Yo! Midoriya!"
Izuku practically leapt out of his skin as he saw Jiro waiting for him. "You mentioned that you lived in Shizuoka."
Izuku nodded "That's right."
"I also need to talk to you. It's about Daiten."
Izuku raised an eyebrow, it lowered as Jiro's jacks rose slightly. "My auditory senses are much higher and more sensitive. Within five metres I can hear the heartbeats with my own ears. I heard both of yours, yours is still beating rather rapidly…care too explain?"
Izuku gulped as he stared the girl down, only for her to maintain his stare. "I…" Jiro smirked, "I'm messing with you green, but in all seriousness…I don't trust Recovery Girls help."
Izuku nodded, "Can we walk and talk?"
Jiro nodded, "Come on, I'd rather not have to spend as much time with a ripe smelling dude."
The duo left the darkening UA school. They passed Houndog and Snipe, doing a patrol. "Listen to me Green, Daiten his heartbeat was going absolutely nuts."
"The impulse in the back of my head was telling me the same thing."
"You have a voice in the back of your head quirk? I thought yours broke your body!" Jiro exclaimed, her quirk heading towards Izuku's neck.
Izuku easily dodged the attack "I'll explain…but somewhere quiet." Somewhere quiet was an old abandoned building that was used for a squat.
"Er…this isn't what I had in mind."
Izuku smirked "I never went straight home after school…not with Bakugo hanging around or living nearby."
Jiro's jaw dropped "Is he a family friend or something? Because there's no way that your relationship with him can be good or healthy."
"His mother and my mother are very good friends. Aunt Mitsuki helped mum out when she could when raising me. But that's beside the point."
Jiro snorted "No shit sherlock. You have a voice in your head quirk but your quirk also damages your body."
"I was born quirkless, have the double toe joint and everything. My quirk itself is known as One For All. It is a stockpiling quirk of no upper limit."
Jiro's jaw dropped "If it has no upper limit meaning it could theoretically copy quirks! Holy shit, Midoriya…that's huge…that explains a lot. Especially why All Might is here."
Izuku gulped, he knew his heartbeat was erratic and he was pretty sure that Jiro Kyoka knew. Jiro meanwhile detected the change in heartbeat but chose not to follow up on the subject. "Damn, Green, that's big…" How could someone so polite, timid and even neurotic at times be given such a power. The answer then hit Jiro, she looked at her classmate "Why do you want to be a hero?"
"I…just want to help people and the best way to be seen doing that is by being a Hero. I could be a Police Officer or Fireman but I'd rather be a hero. I want to save people, especially those who can't fight for themselves to bring them hope."
Jiro could only stare "Dude…I think you're the only one with the truest intention to be a hero. You're All Might's apprentice, you've got his quirk or a quirk very much similar to it. From what my old man told me about a quirk, you need to control your heart. Control your heart, control your quirk and when you look at our class through that lens…"
Izuku shuddered slightly "That's something I don't want to think about...Anyway, what happens now?"
"First, you give me your number. Then I'll give you mine, then we will talk and arrange when we're going to meet up." Jiro retorted "Green, you really don't know how to use your quirk, mine isn't the best…"
"That's not true! Your quirk is incredible! You channel your heartbeat with them, correct?" Izuku asked maniacally.
Jiro nodded surprised by the sudden intensity and the sudden interaction. As she quickly analysed Green Wonder, she realised Bakugo had treated him like shit. Midoriya's brain…Jiro realised what made Midoriya Izuku so dangerous. He had the mind of a hero and his quirk definitely assisted in making his body that of one.
"Midoriya, you help and I'll help you."
Midoriya froze. "There's no hero who can work alone, even Toshinori, All Might included." A female voice stated, making her presence known in Izuku's head.
"Midoriya?"
"I...thought I heard something Jiro." The Purple Rocker nodded "I didn't hear a thing. Anyway, Midoriya, I'll talk to you tonight."
With that the duo left. Unbeknownst to Izuku, the warehouse he had found; was known to another, Midoriya Inko. The warehouse had a unique line of site to the Midoriya apartment. Inko watched from behind the window as Izuku and a friend left the warehouse she used when she had been a Hero-Liaison Barrister. A HLB were Judiciaries who worked closely with Heroic Arrests; Inko had been savvy enough to be able to work independently. It was how she maintained the apartment, given how Hisashi was MIA.
She heard the door open "Hey mom."
"Hey, Izuku."
For the first time in a long time the green-haired family looked at one another. Normally this would be the part where one of them would pass the other and the status quo of barely no interaction would carry on; however Inko wouldn't have anymore of this silence "How was school? Or rather, how was your day?"
Izuku paused "It was okay…I've made some friends Jiro Kyoka, Uraraka Ochako and Iida Tenya to start with. Jiro has a quirk called Earphone Jack which allows her to channel her heartbeat into objects. Uraraka releases gravity on whom she touches with her fingers and Iida has an Engine Quirk. Jiro's been helping me with heroics."
Inko chuckled "I know about your training. I still do your laundry…There was sand in your shorts."
Izuku froze "Ah."
Inko smiled "I'm happy for you and the fact you've managed to activate your quirk. I'm guessing you met a lanky blonde haired man with an immensely physical build."
"Er, somewhat."
Inko smiled fondly "Yagi Toshinori, what have you got my son into now? Although that does explain Eraserhead contacting me."
"You know All Might and Aizawa-Sensei!"
"I work with and for Heroic Arrests and Prosecution…"
Izuku's jaw dropped "Seriously! That's awesome I had no idea that you did that!"
Inko grinned "I also did some things that I'm not proud of but I don't regret doing them, it helped in the long run."
Then before Izuku could move Inko pulled her son into a fierce hug. "I'm well aware of what Bakugo did to you. You look like your father but you're me to the marrow. You conceal everything from everyone and you give off the impression you can't feel the insults or don't let them impact you."
Izuku stilled "I'm sorry."
"Don't be. This is because of me. Izuku, just…be careful." This was accompanied by a bone crushing hug.
The pair parted, feeling lighter, Izuku headed to his room to finish his homework and send some messages.
(Kato)
Nemuri was waiting for him as he wheeled himself into their apartment. As he entered, he found that Nemuri wasn't alone. Present Mic, Eraserhead and Yaorozu Konan was present as well "Mic, Eraserhead, Yaoyorozu…I wasn't expecting anyone."
Nemuri raised an eyebrow "When were you going to tell me?"
"Tell you what?"
"You were trying to repair your legs."
"I live with a Pro Hero, some of my acquaintances and friends happen to be pro heroes. All I've got going for me is my singular focus on repairing my life. I thought it was clear."
Konan chuckled "I wanted to let you know personally that everything is ready. Garaki-san has triple checked our work and is willing to authorise it. In fact he wants to be the one who does the operation."
