So Now Katniss knows it's Peeta who was visiting her dreams. And she has fallen through the mirror of time but when will she land and what great adventure is waiting for her on the other side.
I do not own the hunger games. A special thanks to my beta Norbertsmom
Katniss kicked her legs as her arms reached up toward the light. She reached the surface, gasping for air. Looking around she found herself face to face with a bronzed man sitting on a dinghy.
"Who would ye be? A mermaid for sure."
"Help me please," Katniss gasped.
He reached down and helped her onto the dingy. "You are dressed like one of them savages, but I certainly saw you fall from the sky like a fallen angel. What matter of creature are ye?"
Katniss looked about. "I'm a human, female. And we're not the savages. You are with your diseases and your excessive drink." Katniss was calm but felt she should have been hysterical.
The man sitting before her wore a white billowing shirt, black pants, and boots.
Katniss could only guess that she had traveled in time. The question was when.
Glancing around she saw a Jamaican sloop not that far away. Katniss recalled the history her grandmother Rose told her. There was one thing she was fond of pirates. Katniss knew a great deal about the ruffians.
When her family summered in Puerto Rico they went to the islands with her grandmother. She would take them to Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the islands around the Caribbean so that they could learn. It's why she recognized the sloop.
Hollywood always showed those large Spanish Galleons, but in reality, many buccaneers preferred the smaller ships that were on average about fifty feet long. They were quicker and could haul a great amount of loot.
Katniss estimated she had to be somewhere between 1630 and the 1740s. She wrung out her hair.
This was just like her dream. Except she was wet and the man sitting in front of her was bronzed. It was the only word she could describe him as. A golden man, with a devil-may-care smile. This man was as her grandmother Rose once said of Gale, the type of handsome that would tempt a saint and cause the pious to sin. He was dangerous.
He raised an eyebrow before he looked at the jug he held in his hand. "I think this rum is faulty."
"Is that your ship?"
"My ship?"
"Yes," Katniss.
"It is in a way."
"Wait, where you cast out of the ship?"
He winced. "Ye might say that. My captain got mad because I was a wee bit friendly with a young lass I met at port."
"Your captain is a woman?"
"Aye, she takes it mighty hard when I grace another lass's presence."
Katniss sighed. She bit her lip then asked, "Did you have a mate named Peeta?"
"Peeta?"
"Yes."
"No." He still looked at her as if she was some sort of devil.
"Drat."
"Ye are a strange creature."
"I need to go to land."
"Well, then you're in luck. I'm on my way to Port Royale." He took the oars and began rowing.
"Wait, Port Royale, there hasn't been an earthquake?"
"Earthquake?"
"I'm guessing not," Katniss recalled Port Royale was destroyed after the earthquake on June 7, 1692. "I'm in the 1600s," Katniss murmured to herself. "Or at least before 1692."
"Well that is where you are wrong, it is the year of our Lord 1692, and today is June the first," he said in a sing-song voice.
Katniss looked toward the sun in the sky. By its position, she could see the day was nearly done. She turned then to the man who had fished her out of the sea. He winked and as he sang a song. He slurred some of his words, and there were jugs on the boat with him. "How much rum have you drunk?"
"Rum is the only thing to drink here Miss... What do I call ye?"
"Everdeen."
"Ye have an unusual surname for one of your lineage."
"What do I call you?"
"I, Miss Everdeen, I am known as Finnick Odair to my friends. And Odair-the-Wicked to mine enemies."
"Well Finnick, since you find yourself without employment. I need your assistance."
"How do ye mean ta pay me?"
Katniss sighed and said, "I intend to let you live. I have powers and if you do not help me I shall strike you."
Finnick sat back and looked at her. Then he started to laugh, then slapped his knees. "Ye are fallen from the heavens, I give ye that, but yer no bigger than a wee lad. Nonetheless, it pleases me, ta help ye."
"So Finnick Odair at your service my lady," Finnick did a small bow.
"I need to get new clothing, something comfortable. I need a bow and sheath of arrows, and I need to find a man named Peeta."
"Bow and sheath of arrows, aye. You wouldn't be Diana herself fallen to earth?"
"You are educated," Katniss said.
"In all the ways that count," Finnick winked.
Katniss sighed and closed her eyes, as she became tired. Somehow she slept, but when she opened her eyes she sat up. Finnick must have rowed all night because the sun was cresting over the water.
"Ah ye are awake," Finnick said.
She glanced around, they were entering a bay. She saw seagulls circling above.
"We're entering Port Royale."
Katniss began to see many sloops before they entered the bay. There were men sleeping on the ships. There were also Galleons. Her eyes were wide, as she took in the large seafaring vessels.
"When we land, ye stick by me, do yer hear?"
"Yes," Katniss said.
Port Royale was rife with debauchery. Her grandmother claimed that it was a place where there were people who lived by their own code. Drink gave way to lecherous and salacious behavior. The likes of Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Captain Henry Morgan were known to come to this city.
"Good, hold on to me shirt and do not under any circumstances let go. Ye hear?"
Katniss nodded.
"Ye might be all-powerful, but that city there will eat ye alive. From the look on yer face, ye are an innocent."
Katniss nodded.
"Good." Finn landed them on a beach. He easily pulled the small dinghy ashore. "Come along, we're going to a friend of mine's house that is on the island. If ye are looking for someone, she will know where ta find him."
They headed toward the jungle, and she followed closely behind him. They entered the town and the stench of stale liquor, feces, and bad body odor hit her nose. There were men passed out everywhere, no doubt from a long night's revelry. Pirates came in all shapes and sizes but their common trait was the stench.
Katniss covered her nose with her hand, careful not to touch anything. She could only imagine the amount of filth on the walls of the streets. They were close to a large fort. From her memory, there were several fortifications I'm Port Royale. They made their way through the wharf. She followed Finnick into an establishment that looked nondescript.
It was a shop that was full of things from all over the world. There were silks from the orient, barrels with strange markings, jars filled with strange seeds. There were also hides of animals, feathers, and then she spotted a bow and arrow set. She was drawn to the set, the spine of the bow was carved. While she looked she kept an eye on Finnick.
"Finnick," the man behind the counter greeted.
"Beetee," Finnick greeted.
The man sat in a makeshift wheelchair. The man called Beetee gave Katniss a critical look, assessing who she was. "You have some gall coming into my establishment."
Katniss had not noticed the man in the shadows, he stood next to Finnick and he had a musket facing Finnick. He was an imposing figure with no neck, large massive hands, with a tribal tattoo adorning his bald head. He had a gold hoop through his left ear.
"Beetee," Finnick said. Lifting his hands in the air. "Tis no way ta greet a friend."
"You stole from me," Beetee said.
"What's a few shillings tween friends?"
"If it were the money you ambidexter, I wouldn't care!" Beetee's eyes narrowed. "But you tupped me wife and she left me! You borachio!" Beetee growled.
"Beette, cannae clear me good name. I am most saddened to hear about yer wife. Ye should know I huvnae join giblets with yer missus. I swear on me life."
Beetee grunted.
"Beetee mate, an unclaimed bit of skirt be one thing. One's missus, that reminds me of me sainted mother."
Finnick was slippery as a serpent with his tongue. Katniss raised an eyebrow but kept mute.
Her eyes were trained on the interaction between Beetee and the tattooed menace. Katniss caught the slight jerk Beettee gave his bald companion.
Katniss saw when the man standing to Finnick's right cocked back the lock his finger was loosely placed on the trigger. Katniss grabbed the bow and arrows. "I wouldn't."
Beetee saw her then laughed. "What do you think you are going to do with that?"
Katniss let the arrow fly. It flew through the ring where the trigger lay. The arrow embedded itself with a thud on the furthest wall away from the trio.
Finnick unsheathed his sword and pointed it at the large man.
"Well," Beetee said, lifting his hands in the air. He raised his eyebrow. "What do you want, Finnick?"
Beetee glanced at his man and the bald menace retreated back.
"I came ta purchase the bow me mistress is holdin," Finnick pointed to Katniss with his head.
"Is that all?"
"Tis what she wanted," Finnick grinned. "I was going ta pay fer it but seeing as ye did not exhibit the proper display of courtesy toward m'lady we'll be makin our way."
"Kill him," Beetee ordered.
The man with no neck made a move toward Finnick, and Katniss aimed the arrow at the eating hole. The force pulled him back as the arrow embedded itself in one of the barrels.
"Run," Finnick ordered.
Both she and Finnick made a mad dash for the exit. Shots rang around them. She could see the splattering of water as the musket balls hit the water and splintered the wood along the wharf.
"This way, M'lady," Finnick winked as he put his arm around her middle. He grabbed a rope that was near a scaffolding, cut it and they shot up into the air. They swung around to the top of a brick building. The men below shot at them.
Katniss jumped back as one of the musket bullets hit the edge of the two-story brick building.
"No time to tarry," Finnick. He pointed below them to show the men looking for a ladder.
Katniss ran behind Finnick. They leaped from rooftop to rooftop putting distance between them and their followers. When they reached a dead-end Finnick hunched over breathing heavily. Katniss looked around her and spotted a laundry line. Grabbing Finnick's scabbard, she pulled him.
"Tis not the time for a tryst M'lady."
"I need your scabbard," Katniss growled. She could see their pursuers quickly approaching. She looked down and he looked at her as if she was crazy. "HOLD ON TIGHT!"
Finnick held on to her as she careened off the building, using the scabbard they caught the rope and glided down from the rooftop. She let go and then fell into a cart with bales of hay that was near a stable. "Stay!"
Katniss ordered. She ran into the stable and led a horse out and hit its flank, before scrambling into the cart with Finnick. She threw a carp on top of them.
They heard the men run past them. Finnick grinned and after waiting what seemed like forever said, "I might make a pirate out of ye yet."
Katniss rolled her eyes heavenward. "Let's get out of here."
They both quietly slipped out of the cart. Finnick once more took the lead.
"I need to find clothing, right now I stick out like a sore thumb."
"Like a sore thumb?" Finnick said, puzzled.
"You know, like when you hit your thumb with a hammer, and it becomes red," Katniss said.
"Yer phrases are quite interesting," Finnick said.
She followed Finnick through High Street. Katniss was glad she was in excellent physical condition.
They stopped by a large fortification.
"Finn, why didn't you pay him for the bow?"
"I am innocent as a lamb, lass. I huvnae touched his wife. Tis she who did all the touchin, I turned Joseph and ran fer me poor life."
"Ah."
"Miss. Everdeen," Finnick put his hand to his chest, offended, but his eyes were rife with mischief. "The one thing I swore ta me sainted mother on her deathbed was never ta take a married woman ta bed."
"But stealing is okay?"
"Not on Sunday."
"I doubt he'd accept payment now," Katniss grumbled.
Finnick laughed, "Nae he would, he be a man of money. Beetee likes to experiment with metals and such."
"He's a scientist?"
"Beg yer pardon?"
"Sorry a cultivator of mysteries," Katniss supplied.
Finnick shrugged, "Ye can say that. Now come along, we're walking a bit, I know someone who will help us secure a dress."
Katniss nodded and followed quietly. Finnick took back allies avoiding the main roads.
Eventually, they came up behind a huge brick house. Finn climbed a small picket fence and Katniss followed behind.
"We have to be careful no one spots us, I'm not exactly welcome in certain circles."
Katniss could tell why; Finnick had a mischievous bone in his body.
He looked behind her then winked. He whistled lowly in the air. It was still very early. Katniss wasn't sure anyone was awake, but sure enough, a slight woman with two axes tucked into the band of her skirt came out.
A large dark man that looked like a mini mountain followed her.
Finnick whistled once more.
"Odair?"
"Johanna," Finn said, coming out of the shadows. He held his hands up, as the big man aimed a pistol at Finnick.
"Stand down Thresh, Finnick isn't up to his old tricks is he?"
"Well," Finnick shrugged.
"I told you not to mess with Bonny," Johanna said.
"Is Annie here?"
Johanna sighed, "Yes she's here and she brought me another unfit case."
Finn grinned, "Well I bring you another." He signaled Katniss to come out of hiding.
The man Johanna called Thresh stared at Katniss as if she was a snack.
"Thresh go tell the cook to have some tea ready. We have guests."
"Johanna Mason, Miss Everdeen of the colonies."
"Finnick…" Johanna said. "Where'd you pick up this one? She looks like she escaped the colonies?"
"She fell from the sky."
Johanna laughed. "I have got to get off this island."
"You might want to," Katniss said.
"Why is that?" Johanna said.
"There was a minor earthquake in Jamaica that toppled three homes a few years back, in 1688. There will be another one in exactly six days from now that will devastate Port Royale. A third of the city will fall into the bay and it will be followed by a forty-foot wave that will devastate the survivors."
Johanna rubbed her shoulders. "Her words are pure madness. But I am compelled to believe her. "
"There's also a great treasure buried in Port Royal."
Both Finnick and Johanna looked at each other skeptically.
Johanna shook her head. Katniss saw that the truth wasn't going to work, so she was going to have to be creative. Katniss relied on her knowledge of the area. There was folklore about a buried treasure and a ruthless man who did it. Captain Snow was buried somewhere within Port Royal. He cursed this land if anyone dared disturb his final resting place.
"There is a legend of a feared pirate named Captain Snow. A merciless man who raided the Spanish, the English, the Dutch, and the French. It is told that he sailed from the tip of Africa for a sandy island in front of a natural bay. I believe he settled here in Port Royale and buried his treasure."
"You sound like the man I have hidden in my home right now. He's delirious, says he knew Capitan Snow."
"I need to see him," Katniss urged.
"Finnick!" A soft voice exclaimed from the interior of the home, followed by a blur of cotton.
For his part, Finnick opened his arms tenderly holding the young woman. She wept in his arms. "You came back."
"I told you I would," Finnick said against her hair.
"Come along, let's give the love birds their privacy."
Johanna led Katniss to a room where the man lay. "Annie found him by the shore two days ago and brought him here. He's delirious. He's been calling out for…"
"Katniss."
"How did ye know?"
"I am Katniss, and his name is Peeta."
Katniss walked into the room and there he lay, the man she leaped over the edge of the world for. His brow was sweaty and his color looked ashen.
"Was he shipwrecked?"
"I'm not sure," Johanna said. "Annie didn't say. But again Annie isn't the most reliable. She's touched," Johanna pointed to her temple.
Katniss nodded.
"You two are strange bedfellows."
"He came to visit me," Katniss whispered, going into the room.
"Annie's been tending to him. I'll fetch you a bowl of clean water. "
Katniss nodded as Johanna left the room. She quietly pulled a chair by his side. He had a bear tattooed on his shoulder. His blond hair fell across his face, his skin was warm and clammy, a sign of fever. She needed to bring down the fever.
She came from a proud strong heritage. Katniss took his hand and began singing quietly the songs taught to her by her father.
Johanna came in with the bowl of water and fresh linens. Katniss didn't notice she was busily singing to Peeta. It was a song that poured from her heart. As if the purity of her song would revive Peeta from his sickbed the way Lazarus rose from the dead.
As the night approached she stripped him of linens. Johanna and Annie helped her make sure he was comfortable. He wore a loincloth and if Katniss thought of his nakedness too much she was sure she'd blush like a wayward child with their hands caught in the cookie jar.
The next morning his fever had broken and he looked peaceful.
"I'll prop his head against my head and you can spoon him the broth," Katniss said to Annie.
"Alright then," Annie answered.
Johanna helped Annie move Peeta.
In his unconscious state, he thrashed until she cradled his head in her arms. Katniss began humming to him.
The moment he heard her voice he became tranquil.
"Well I never," Johanna said, her eyebrows shot up.
As Katniss sang, both women stood there listening to her. Katniss stopped singing and cleared her throat.
"Oh sorry," Annie said, her cheeks were flushed and her eyes were wide. "You sound like an angel. Finnick said you were a goddess that fell from the sky."
"Not a goddess, just on a mission."
"Huzza," Johanna said softly. "I'd make a pretty farthing on you."
"Johanna!" Annie admonished. They began bickering.
"Ladies please, we must administer Peeta the nutrients," Katniss said. "We are on borrowed time."
Both women settled down.
Annie was able to get him to swallow the broth and water. When Annie and Johanna left Katniss stood and rubbed her back. She was tired and time was running out. Not counting today, they had four days left.
Katniss sat down next to his bed and took his hand and placed the gentle kiss on the back of it before saying, "Peeta, please wake up."
She closed her eyes, "I don't know why you brought me here. What is my purpose and what happened to you?"
Sighing she leaned forward to daringly press a kiss on his lips, just in case the fairy tales were true. At this point, she was willing to try anything.
His eyes fluttered open and the fever that once existed was tamed. Peeta's eyes roamed her face. His hand reached out to touch her face. The pad of his fingertips gently traced the bridge of her nose, her cheekbones, and her lips. with each slight touch, Katniss felt fluttering in the pit of her stomach.
Katniss dated Gale, they were high school sweethearts but his caresses never felt right. Katniss avoided public displays of affection and she avoided having sex. It wasn't that she was some closed-off virgin with romantic ideas about sex and marriage.
It just felt off.
When Gale cheated on her, Katniss wasn't really surprised. She was calm and wished him well. For the first time in years, she felt relieved and free from the bonds of that quasi friendship backslash relationship.
However Peeta's light caresses felt right, she leaned into his touch. He cupped her face, his eyes alight with wonder.
"You're here! I thought you were a dream?"
"I could say the same for you."
Katniss had so many questions. And the only thing she could ask was, "How?"
"You woke me up with your kiss. I'm cursed."
