The Hybrid

May, 70th Year AFR (After the Failed Rebellion)

District Twelve:

The loud piercing sound of the air raid alarm went off. Katniss stopped ripping the weeds from the spot her mother wanted to grow a garden. Curious, she went to the tree and climbed up to glare up at the sky.

At school, they were told to go to the shelter when they heard the air raid alarm. Many in the district were tired of the air raid drills. Billy Robins said there wasn't any such thing as a Hybrid. He said his maw and his grandpa both said Hybrids were made up.

Katniss wasn't sure. If the war was fake, why would the Capitol have them run drills in school? Or have the men in the district drafted into the war. As soon as they turned 16 they were conscripted into the Peacekeepers corps. Sadly, even her gentle Papa was drafted. The Capitol took all of the men between the ages of 16 and 40.

Her Mama said they didn't want strong women, only the men. The hybrid creatures they had to fight were very strong. Katniss didn't understand, but she knew her Papa, as well as the others, were shipped off to District Two to train before being shipped off to the war. On TV, President Snow said they needed to fight against the Hybrids to keep Panem safe.

The war became the most important thing in Panem, even the Hunger Games were canceled. That was her argument with Billy Robins. Katniss pointed out if this was fake they wouldn't have stopped the Reapings. It's why she climbed the tree when the loud air raid alarm went off. She was determined to prove Billy wrong.

Katniss searched the sky.

At first, she didn't see anything, then what she saw made her little heart thump in her chest. They appeared in the sky like a swarm of flies, their engine rumbling like angry bees as they neared the mines in District Twelve. They didn't have the seal of Panem on them, they had what looked like a bullseye symbol on them.

"The Hybrids," Katniss whispered to herself with fear.

Katniss did not know what a Hybrid looked like but she overheard the adults speaking about them. What they described was scary, and in her imagination, she pictured tall strong hairy beasts, with fangs who gobbled up people. The thought of such a horrid monster terrified her.

As she climbed down, she told herself, she was twelve now and she couldn't act like a baby. When her Papa was drafted Katniss cried. At the time she was only eleven, but her Papa told her she needed to be strong. Katniss swore she would help her mama out, especially with her baby sister. Today was her birthday and she wasn't a baby anymore. If the Hunger Games were still being held she would've been part of the Reaping. Katniss wasn't going to let creatures that were created in Capitol Laboratories scare her.

She jumped down and ran to the house. They only had moments to get to the shelters. The Hybrids were going to attack District Twelve. "Mama! Mama! I saw them, the hovercrafts!"

¨Katniss, quickly take your bag,¨ her mother said, gathering her medical equipment. Her mother put on her cap with the red cross on it. She was the head of the Auxiliary Medical Corp. Her mama was a fine healer and was recruited to show other women how to heal casualties.

With the men fighting in the Capitol, the women were deputized and given jobs such as air raid wardens, auxiliary fire brigades, and District Defense Corps known as the DDC, they were in charge of making sure the curfews were kept and blackout conditions were maintained. The men that were left formed militias, or as they were called, the home guard. Some women like Hazelle Hawthorne took it upon themselves to train both the boys and girls who were aged fourteen and older. Katniss was still considered too young.

Katniss slipped on the small knapsack she used for school to carry her books. The shelters didn't have many amenities. She learned quickly they needed to have necessary supplies. Warm clothing, blankets, some food rations, a working flashlight, and water. Their mother made sure they had these things neatly folded up in their packs, and their gas masks along with their books.

¨Come on Prim, take my hand," Katniss urged.

"I don't have to take your hand. I'm not a baby," Prim insisted.

"Primrose Everdeen, this isn't the time to start something. Do as your sister says," their mother Bonnie admonished.

They ran out of their home and ran toward the bunker along with the other families in the Seam. The earth shook beneath Katniss' feet as the first bomb hit the district. Katniss ran quicker trying not to get lost in the crowd as they piled into the bunker.

"Bonnie, we've got injured," Hazelle Hawthorne shouted once they were inside.

"Girls, stay together. Primrose mind your sister," their mother said, leaving them on a bunk.

Katniss nodded. She took out the doll their dad made for Primrose from the backpack." I think Princess Cordelia is scared too! She might require your bedside skill as a doctor to help her remain calm."

"Oh Princess Cordelia, there is nothing to be afraid of," Prim spoke to the doll.

Katniss had a bear her papa made for her in her own pack, but she didn't pull it out. Katniss told herself she was too big for toys. But when she packed her belongings for this emergency she didn't want the last thing her father gave her to be destroyed.

So now as she sat in the shelter she held onto the hope that her mom would be okay and the Hybrids would just go away.

However, instead of a few minutes, it took hours.

"Agh," Prim cried.

Katniss put her arms around her sister. "Hush, we're going to be okay, Lil'duck."

"Quack," Prim's little voice said at the sound of the nickname their Papa gave her.

"That's right, quack," Katniss replied, trying to distract herself and her sister from the fact that their mother was outside in danger.

Katniss held onto her sister throughout the ordeal. The shelter groaned as the bombs fell on their small district. That night Katniss wished very much to be older and boy. She could fight if she was only given the opportunity. The Hybrids were going to kill them either way and she didn't trust those awful monsters.

When they left the shelter the next morning, the train station was gone; the tracks were all but demolished. The mining buildings were burned down to the ground. The women of the auxiliary fire brigade were covered in dark soot and ash. Katniss would never forget the look of helplessness on their faces.

Not everyone got to safety.

Not everyone survived.

Katniss searched the crowd for Mama. Katniss squealed with great joy when she finally spotted her. She gripped Prim tightly as their mother fell to her knees and hugged them both tightly.

"My babies," she whispered over and over again. Katniss could smell the burnt metal, the tangy smell of dried blood, and the acrid scent of smoke. Katniss learned the Hybrids were evil creatures.
