Hello, hello, hello! I know there aren't a lot of OC fics in this fandom but this idea would not leave my head until I wrote it down so please enjoy my attempt at trying to write a fic for Breath of the Wild. This will probably not be the final version, just to let you guys know.
I don't really know uh who Elena is gonna end up with at the end of things, but this fic is actually the first in a series following Elena's adventures in Hyrule! The other one "The World Beyond" takes place during Age of Calamity and I'm working on that one as well! I hope you guys enjoy and please please please leave reviews! I love hearing what you guys think!
Chapter One: Into the Wild
She awoke to the smell of freshly fallen rain and blades of grass tickling her cheek. Elena's eyebrows creased as she pulled herself up from her sprawled position on the ground. She'd been asleep in her bed the last time she checked. But the world around her looked vaguely familiar, towering trees with shades of green brighter than anything back home and an otherworldly quality about them.
In fact, everywhere she looked all she saw was rolling fields and towering canopies, with the bubbling of water close enough to hear but not enough to wet the ground around her. Instead the ground was still wet from the dew of the morning and it had rained recently if the smell was any indication. A stone building crumbled around her, brick and mortar barely clinging to life. Elena glimpsed upward to find a rather large hole in the ceiling to match the one that had been blown in the side of the building. Where the hell was she?
She tried wracking her brain for any information about her surroundings but her head pounded, turning up nothing but empty memories of watching a screen where this exact world had existed.
But that couldn't be real. World like this didn't exist, she had to have been dreaming. She pinched her bare arm, and when a jolt of pain shot up her bicep, she winced and began to grumble.
If this was a dream then she wouldn't be woken up with pain. Her leggings from her workout were still around her legs and she stood only in her black sports bra that she'd fallen asleep in. No this wasn't a dream, she decided. If it was, she surely would have given herself better clothes.
"Fuck!" She yelled as her bare foot collided into something solid, her voice bouncing off the walls and creating an echo of her cursing. A small chuckle slid past her lips at the ridiculousness of the sound. Elena looked down to glare at the object that had incurred her wrath, and found herself cocking a singular eyebrow at what looked to be a wooden treasure chest. Her toe throbbed and the nail hung at a weird angle before she finally shut her eyes and tore the damn thing off. She let out another curse, this one louder than the last. Wherever this was, she was not happy to be here.
Especially when something as small as a chest had already pissed her off and ruined her blissful nap. She was supposed to be studying for her final in chemistry once she got back from the gym, but as soon as she laid down on her apartment bed, she had passed out from exhaustion.
That morning she'd been at work, followed by accidentally running into Aly on the way out of the Starbucks, which had prompted her to head to the gym for a local boxing session against a punching bag.
Elena shook her head as she crouched down to inspect the chest, biting her lip in frustration. She really should have known better than to enjoy the one blissful moment she'd had in months. "Too good to be true," she muttered to herself, sliding her fingertips underneath the wooden top of the chest and pushing upward. Her groans did not sound attractive, the sound echoing off the wall once again. It was like trying to pry open one of the boxes from the trucks Starbucks would get, where instead of being all nicely taped and ready to be cut open with a box cutter, you had to pry the damn thing open with your fingers because the glue they used was almost like cement.
Elena let out a yell of victory when the chest flipped open, revealing a threadbare shirt, large brown satchel and a pair of lace up brown boots. Not knowing what else to do, she grabbed the shirt and pulled it over her head, the scratchy material of the grey sleeves sewn messily together with the silk white peplum bodice, and a brown tie cinched just above the ribcage. The shirt itself almost looked like it had been torn from a much longer garment, like a dress or something, and then added sleeves much later on for more comfort. The hem fell just short of her legging waist line, showing off a little bit of her bronzed stomach. It wasn't the most comfortable thing she'd worn, but since she didn't see any other options...
The boots were much better, coming with comfortable socks and lacing up like magic underneath her fingers, fitting perfectly. In fact, it all seemed to fit perfectly.
Which was another thing to add to her growing list of confusing experiences.
Pulling her brunette curls from her ponytail to ease the headache that had been growing stronger and stronger since she got there, her scrunchie found its way back to the usual spot on her right wrist, helping shake out the curls and scratch the itch that had formed on the back of her head.
However, that was the last moment of respite she got, cause as soon as she slammed the lid of the chest shut, a feral shriek pierced her ears and a blue blur launched itself straight toward her.
Purely based on instinct, she threw her fist forward, a satisfying crack! echoing off the walls in response. The blur sharpened into a monster she'd only seen a couple times, but never encountered. Before Elena could get a better look, the creature lunged again, claws digging into her shoulders and strength pinning her down on the floor. Gasping in pain, Elena reached out to the world around her, fingers scrambling for anything she could find, when they landed on something solid, she swung.
A tree branch sent the monster flying, his shriek growing louder as he recovered from the hit. Elena scrambled up to her full height, but found that it didn't do much to help her in the fight, seeing as the monster was only a few inches shy of her. She twirled her wrist like a baseball player ready to strike and swung upward, her branch colliding with a much thicker piece of wood, that definitely resembled a bat better than her measly tree branch did. Her weapon split into two separate pieces and Elena dodged the monster's swing, sending her wrist into his gut, exactly where the solar plexus would be. She didn't know if this creature had it, but apparently it was enough to stun the blue monster and cause him to drop the club, which Elena snatched up immediately, landing a blow directly on top of the skull of the monster. He remained stunned and she hit him again, and again, and again. With one final shriek, the monster collapsed to the ground, granting her a much closer look than before.
The blue hued creature had a head like a pig's and ears like a bat's, but it's body was some sort of fucked up concoction between a human and a goat, like those myths her mom used to read to her when she was little.
But Elena was confident now where she was, and that was what scared her, she told herself. It wasn't the fact that she'd killed something. It wasn't the fact that life as she knew it was over. It wasn't the fact that she'd almost died. No, that wasn't the scary part at all.
Because she now knew she was in the decimated kingdom of Hyrule, where you could die from just about anything. And she knew there was no way home.
The bokoblin faded into a cloud of dust, leaving behind spoils that Elena collected in the small leather satchel that she found in another chest not too far from the stone building she woke up in, along with a place where she could pack a few weapons. The club she'd stolen from the bokoblin was currently strapped to her back, but she knew it would break before long.
She needed an actual weapon, something sharp she could use to actually defend herself aside from her fists and a block of wood.
But Elena was having bigger problems than just unwelcome visitors and a lack of proper defense tools. Her stomach had started to growl, and there was no water anywhere to help tide her over until she could find something.
Letting out a reluctant sigh, she began to trek across the open fields scanning any tree or bush she found for any sign of actual food.
A bird flew past her at an agonizingly slow pace and Elena debated about pulling one of the weapons on them. But she didn't.
The bow she'd found in an extra chest around the area hung lazily at her back, barely used and the quiver untouched.
She wasn't an archer. She didn't do any of this survival stuff, that was always her foster family's thing. Elena was just dragged along for the ride.
Her mind drifted to the broken phone in the pocket of her leggings. Any attempt to use it had been discouraged when she realized that she didn't exactly get bars in this place.
Maybe once she encountered the Sheikah or whatever they'd give her phone an extra boost and she could actually call someone.
Technology was a thing here right? She wasn't misremembering that?
God she hoped so. Or else she really was screwed.
So far the most she'd found and gathered were several mushrooms, a ton of apples, and a few herbs here and there. Not that she could do anything with that without a pot and a fire.
There had to be some around here right?
She remembered playing this part of the game cause she'd died like a thousand times from falling or the cold or some other bullshit. Except now it was actually real life and if she died there was no coming back in any way, shape, or form.
Another feral shriek pierced the air and Elena froze, mouth hanging open and eyes fixated on the bokoblin that had noticed her.
Maybe if she stayed really still he wouldn't notice her.
A moment passed and her hypothesis failed. What was worse was that this bokoblin not only charged straight toward her, but he also had a sword and a shield, making her club useless.
The only option she had was to run.
And so she did.
She booked it across the barren land, her boots slapping the ground as her side split in pain from the sprint. The shrieks grew louder and Elena made the mistake of looking behind her. The toe of her shoe caught on a rock and she went flying to the ground, shoulders slamming into the rocky area, the momentum carrying her forward until she rolled to a stop, cuts littering the parts of her arm that weren't covered by her sleeves. They weren't deep enough to cause bleeding, but the pain was sharp and prickling.
A flash of silver arced toward her and Elena shut her eyes, preparing herself for the inevitable nothingness that would follow. But it never came.
The bokoblin vanished into smoke on the ground before her and a figure stood above victoriously.
He was dressed in similar threadbare clothing, although he clearly had done this before. His eyes were a brilliant shade of blue yet held no recognition. He placed the large steel axe on his back and offered his hand.
Elena took it and pulled herself up, "Thanks."
Link grunted out a 'you're welcome' before marching forward again. Elena picked up the sword the bokoblin had left behind and ditched the club, strapping the sword to her back and following closely behind Link.
Elena watched as he pulled out the Sheikah Slate and held it out to the pedestal that stuck out of the ground. But he was hesitant, hand slightly shaking as he did so.
Add that to the list of unusual sights, Elena thought to herself, creasing her brows at the action.
The orange light etched into the stone glowed a bright blue and the ground began to shake beneath their feet.
Panicking, Elena grabbed hold of the steadiest thing around her, which happened to be the Champion himself. Link arched an eyebrow as Elena's grip tightened on his shoulder, the ground slowly growing further and further away as the tower rose higher and higher, the same blue light as the pedestal emanating from it.
When Elena was positive the tower was stable, she took a step across the platform she and Link were now on, gaze drawn to the castle in the center of the kingdom. She knew the Calamity was further away than it looked, but still it seemed like it would explode at any minute, destroying this world once more.
Except this time there would be no Link to save the day anymore.
Elena gulped and turned to face the blonde swordsman, his gaze also fixated on the black cloud that devoured the building which had once housed the royal family. Blue met brown and a determined look crossed both of their faces.
Even without saying anything, Elena knew they were both on the same page.
She wouldn't let anything happen to Link, and Link wouldn't let anything happen to Hyrule.
They were now tied together, for better or for worse.
welp that's it for chapter one! Please let me know what you think!
