This isn't an update, just something I felt I needed to address.
A lot of people have been leaving reviews here about how I'm shitting on Jaune and such by saying what I said at the end of last chapter.
I want to preface this by saying Jaune is actually one of my favourite characters in RWBY. While I'm not the biggest fan of the direction he was taken in, I still appreciate his concept as a character, and feel like he had a lot of potential (which is generally why I don't write shit post fall, because that's when he started to go to shit.)
I was only speaking from a lens untainted by bias. Jaune, without any bias involved, doesn't generally deserve a harem. He cheated his way into Beacon, lied to a lot of people, and was a dick to Pyrrha when she offered to hep him train so he could feel like he belonged. Yes, he apologised, but it doesn't change what he did. His actions also endangered not only himself, but others. His inexperience in many of the things that others at the school have as common knowledge could easily be the difference between life and death if going on a mission. Purely from that standpoint, he does not deserve a harem.
Now, I want to add onto this by saying that I mean this only for Jaune from the canon show. Fanfiction Jaunes are different, because every author has their own unique twist put on Jaune to perhaps help explain things away, or to justify his reasons for doing so. With canon Jaune, a major problem with his character in my eyes is we never learn why he felt the need to cheat his way into Beacon instead of training and earning it. Yes, many fanfics often go with the 'my father didn't train me' one (I've used it myself in the past, I'll freely admit that), others go that Jaune was just lazy and always going 'I'll do it later' but 'later' never came (again, something I've used in the past) and many others have used reasons.
But we're never given a concrete reason in the canon as to why Jaune didn't train before Beacon, and felt the need to cheat to get his way in instead of working hard and learning like the rest do. But credit where credit is due, Jaune certainly manages to catch up, as we never see any hints of him struggling in classes, and he's even able to fight on his own without any aid from his teammates by the time of the breech (which would likely only have been a period of a few months since Pyrrha started training him). But even so, it doesn't change the fact that Jaune doesn't deserve a harem in canon. Happiness? Yes, I think everyone deserves some form of happiness. But a harem? No.
On the other hand, Ren is very different from Jaune. He works hard, trains hard, studies hard. He's worked damned hard to help take care of Nora since they were kids after the attack on Kuroyuri. Has Ren done some illegal things in the process? Most likely, there's no denying that he's probably done so. Can what he's done be justified by his good intentions? Partially, but the fact remains he's definitely done illegal things, even if it was for good intentions. In comparison, Jaune's illegal deeds were done for purely selfish intentions.
Ren is also heavily patient with Nora, letting her set the pace for things so that she can be more comfortable, even in regards to their relationship. He knows Nora has had it tougher than him and there's no doubt that if he wanted to take control of their relationship, he could certainly do so. But he lets her have control, letting her set the pace so they can do things only when she is ready for them to do those things. He also forces himself to mature early on to help with taking care of Nora.
From purely that standpoint, comparing the two of them, Ren is clearly more deserving of the harem between him and Jaune as far as canon goes.
I was in no way trying to shit on Jaune I was purely looking at things through the perspective of what we know from the show, and the experiences that Jaune and Ren have both gone through. Between the two of them, Ren is clearly the one more deserving of having a harem, and I do wish there were more Ren/Harem fics.
The reason I choose to write Jaune is because I just see a lot of potential in him as a character. Ren has potential too, yes, but I almost feel obligated to go on a set path with Ren and I feel like deviating from it is almost insulting, I can't explain it that well, hence why I choose to not write Ren, and prefer to write Jaune.
For people hoping for an update, sorry, just felt like I should have addressed this ages ago cause now I feel like people think I hate Jaune, when that couldn't be further from the truth. I am trying to work on chapter 2 of this, but it's hard. I am working on the next Chapter of the Tyrant and am finally starting to make headway on that so, hopefully, that comes out sooner rather than later, but I can't make any promises.
ANyway, this is Ezras Hargrave, signing off!
