1999 April 13

Emi cursed when the white-haired boy damn near killed her. In return, she threw a punch to his stomach, which the boy easily avoided.

"What did your father say when Tadashi-san told him you'd be studying here?" Satoru delivered a roundhouse kick, turning his heel and backing away after she ducked to avoid the attack. "I'd thought he would disagree," he added while dodging.

"That was what I thought, too. But he asked me if I wanted to—" The girl scoffed when her opponent threw a feint and proceeded to focus on attacking.

"Of course, you told him you wanted to stay here, right?" The boy interjected confidently, using his left hand to block her sidekick, then grabbed her from the ankle then pulled her closer.

"You're overconfident ." Emi, who was a few inches apart from the boy, used his shoulders to launch herself into the air, freeing her ankle in the process. "But if it helps your ego, I told him I needed to stay."

"Why?"

"I told him I needed to bring someone down a notch," she replied, a little out of breath as she landed behind him, hearing the boy scoff in the process.

The little girl heaved a sigh of relief when their instructor signaled for them to take a break. She went to the bench to drink water after, Satoru closely followed behind her.

Earlier that day, Emi and her grandfather talked about staying in the town in the meantime while she was unsure of what path she would like to take. Koichi, when told about this, was apprehensive about the sudden suggestion. Then gave in when he realized his daughter would stay with his father so it would be safe.

It was not a difficult decision to change schools; the girl had no attachment to her previous one anyway. There were no precious memories, all she could remember was enduring her classes under the guise of a primary school kid.

Emi only tried to comply and finish her tasks.

It was a given that Emi would excel in school, although she felt it was not an academic achievement after using her adult brain. The good thing about her transfer was she would be with Satoru in her third-grade class making it less boring. A comrade would suffer with her; that was a good thing. That was on the grounds that the boy would stay put during classes, obediently going to school everyday and following the teacher's orders. Which seemed nearly impossible considering he might have an undiagnosed ADHD, and with his Six Eyes added to the mix, it was a bad combination.

She needed to finish school though regardless of whether she enjoyed it or not.

It was a given that she needed to continue her primary school, or else how would she get a job in this life? She could settle with exorcising curses. She heard that being a jujutsu sorcerer was a high-paying job but from the looks of it, it did not seem very stable.

Going back, transferring schools meant she needed to ask for her guardian's consent.

Emi was currently in third grade, and thankfully Tadashi had already processed her papers. Because damn her if she needed to do paperwork in this life too, she would rather die again than do a desk job to support herself. It was a good thing her grandfather acted fast, even making sure he had backup plans in case Koichi disagreed.

There were no other schools for future generation sorcerers other than in Kyoto and Tokyo. As a result, children from sorcerer families need to attend regular school during preschool, primary school and middle school. That was because educational institutions that catered to people with high cursed energy only appeared a hundred years ago.

So despite the increasing number of potential jujutsu users, they could only cater to a few. Mainly, accepting people from the well-known clans or children discovered by powerful jujutsu-shis (呪術師).

There were only two educational institutions for next-generation jujutsu sorcerers—Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School (東京都立呪術高等専門学校, Tōkyō Toritsu Jujutsu Kōtō Senmon Gakkō) and Kyoto Prefectural Jujutsu High School (京都立 呪術高等専門学校, Kyotō Toritsu Jujutsu Kōtō Senmon Gakkō).

The setting of Jujutsu Kaisen manga and anime was held in Tokyo when the teen Itadori Yuuji was scouted by the adult Gojo Satoru after swallowing one of Sukuna's fingers.

Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School, also called Tokyo Jujutsu High , was located on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan, away from probing eyes. The land it covered was under a barrier made by the immortal jujutsu user, Master Tengen. The institution served as training grounds for young jujutsu-shis, who in turn were taught by alumni of the school. On the other hand, people who had insufficient cursed energy but could see cursed would be designated as windows (assistants or managers).

Emi assumed that was the fate she needed to undergo against her will seeing she was now technically Satoru's aide. It was a job she never asked for, and at a young age at that. It was the perfect hell for her, working when she did not even want to.

Emi expected to join the workforce at least after she graduated from university. However, her torture seemed to come way earlier in the form of a white-haired boy.

It had been a month since she started to undergo a one-sided beat-up from Gojo Satoru. Emi could not deny it, but that helped her increase her skills and as a talentless person, she could only do twice the effort. Forcing her to wake up during midnight to train her body. Thankfully, she had a sturdy constitution, and along with her immense strength, she could handle long hours of training. It also helped she was a yoga fanatic; all that stretching would pay off in the long run. It eased her sore muscles while also preventing it from happening.

Emi cleared her head, walking back to the training ground to train.

"Emi-chan, are you going back?" Satoru called from behind her.

"Yeah, let's finish the training before sunset. Ojiichan wanted me to join him for dinner." The girl slowed down her footsteps, letting Satoru catch up beside her.

"I also want to come."

"No ."

1999 July 24

Emi woke up with a jolt. There was no sweating; all she felt was the cold feeling that gradually settled on her chest.

It had been like this since she was born. The shadow of death constantly loomed over her—whether she was absent-minded, sleeping or resting. Emi could say that the trauma of overworking to death had been her persistent fear, even to the lengths that she had to be medicated for her insomnia. Now all Emi desired was rest. However, that proved to be an impossible task, not with the Gojo family adding to the load, training her from dawn to dusk.

The 'her' before was the perfect example of an employee. She followed the given instructions up to a tee, finished all her allotted work in an hour after it was given, and would never say no when asked for a favor. Honestly, Emi knew she was a pushover, but she liked to glamorize it by thinking she was perfecting her work ethic. Now that she looked back, it was funny how she wanted to stay away from this kind of life, yet she was getting pulled into it again.

Emi was not complaining since it was not as if she was trying hard to get that slacker life. Furthermore, now she had people she treasured—and if she counted Satoru as her friend – that was something worth working for.

Looking at her reflection in the mirror, the girl noticed her lip bleeding. Probably from the anxiety she regularly kept under the wraps when everyone was looking. Emi quickly applied her reversed cursed technique, successfully healing the cut. With a satisfied glance, the girl started to prepare for school.

Satoru and her went to the same primary school, albeit placed in different sections. They still managed to meet during lunch break so it didn't matter to the two. The girl was in good academic standing, ranking top of her class every semester. It was a breeze for her, and all she had to do was keep a primary schooler's pace, reminding herself it was a bad idea to skip a grade unless she wanted to be a jujutsu sorcerer earlier.

On the contrary, Satoru stayed in the middle of the class ranking, not because of his poor performance but because he wanted to stay there. At some point, he told Emi he needed to give others a chance to look smart, which the girl had given him a disgusted look.

Regarding her training, it was also going well. Emi's martial arts improved a lot after a year. Plus, she mastered the reverse cursed technique that surprisingly came as second nature to her. Probably because of her previous work and skillset as a doctor.

Reverse Cursed Technique (反転術式 Hanten Jutsushiki), if compared to the standard cursed technique, was akin to positive energy while the latter was the negative one. From what she could recall, it was a complex skill by combining two sources (-) energies to produce a (+) energy. The process sounded easy but applying it was a difficult task. The specifics lay on a molecular level, and without her previous life's knowledge and her cursed technique, she would not even dream of using it.

Sadly, figuring it out meant she had to deal with an annoying white-haired boy. Emi had to explain the process in her own words considering there was no written manual on learning it. Most people could not theorize its operation, only relying on talent to understand it. It made sense considering a few people used it in the original manga, Gojo Satoru being one of them.

Jujutsu-shi mainly used reversed Cursed Energy for healing, but she wanted to experiment more to make it usable in combat.

"Emi-chan?" The boy directed his light blue eyes at her while holding his school bag on his left shoulder. "Did you have a nightmare again?"

"Same old," she casually replied as she wore her black school shoes.

A tiny fist appeared, blocking her vision. It slowly opened, revealing an orange-flavored candy. Emi looked up, raising her eyebrows as if asking what it was for.

Satoru sighed, throwing the candy at her with a flick of his fingers. "I used to eat sweet things to stimulate my brain. Maybe it would help you distract yourself."

"Thanks, Ruru-kun." Emi popped the orange candy in her mouth after catching it. The boy in front of her 'tsk-ed' seeming to give up on convincing her to drop the stupid nickname.

The little girl thought his name was too long, and she refused to continue saying those three syllables. Satoru's (さとる,サトル) name came from the Japanese verb, "to know" or "to understand" which technically meant that saying his name was the same as praising him for his intellect. And as a person who single-handedly campaigns for a less conceited Gojo, there was no way in hell she would do that.

The two walked to school together then separated when Emi entered her classroom. Emi had no friends. She even had to avoid meeting with Satoru's fangirls, who worshipped the boy like he was their god or something. They mostly liked him for his good looks and charisma (if a child could have that), and if anyone disagreed, they would be subjected to bullying. Of course, as the girl who always went to school with him every morning, Emi was not safe.

Not that it mattered for the girl; in her eyes, they were children. However, the relentless name-calling started to irritate her a little. Primary schoolers began to call her 'roach' seeing the parted white hair on her forehead looked a lot like a cockroach's antenna. If she wanted, Emi could call them names too. Granted, none of those were something a child could understand.

But if push comes to shove, she was more than willing to hit a kid.

Emi was not a good person—she was petty and vengeful. She would not hesitate to kick a child's ass if they bothered her enough.

1999 July 31

Satoru felt he was far from understanding the Reverse Cursed Technique the way Emi did. Even with his Six Eyes, it was a skill that was hard to comprehend, and despite the little girl's help, he could not wrap his mind around it.

The end-of-school bell rang, and the boy rested his head on his desk lazily. The children around him started to gather their things and put them inside their bags. It was a Friday, and Satoru needed to train again tomorrow. Martial art consisted of mock fights with his instructor and Emi; limitless technique training was with his father—half the time while the other half was self-study and focusing on his Six Eyes control so it would strain him less.

The boy slowly blinked his light blue eyes as he heard distant whispers from the other side of the room.

"…she's like a roach . She keeps pestering Satoru-sama! And her hair! So hateful to look at." A high-pitched voice complained. He recalled this was the girl who followed him all around the school on his first week.

"Aki-chan, why don't we corner her after school?" Satoru's ears perked up, an unknown feeling rising from his chest. He had heard the taunts that were going around, but since the girl could not care less about it—saying children at their age would not know any better — he also decided to let it go.

"That's right, let's—"

Bang!

Children's screams could be heard around the room. Satoru shook off the wood chips that were accidentally attached to his school uniform as he removed his foot from the broken desk—running a hand through his white hair, the boy glared at the two girls before him. The girl on the right, who he assumed was the one with the annoying voice, spluttered when she saw him, ears reddening. The one on the left only stared with a frightened expression.

"You best start sewing your mouths shut before I do it for you." The white-haired boy deadpanned wearing his usual bored expression. Contrary to his appearance, the boy exuded a frightening aura that made the children around him quiver.

"S-Satoru-kun!" The girl on the right screeched, causing him to rub his ear in annoyance.

"Don't call me that," he warned, narrowing his eyes as he tried to hold his temper. No one could call him using his first name; even his father's aides needed to ask for his permission out of respect. "Now, if you girls would kindly shut your mouth before spouting nonsense."

Both of the girl's eyes flashed with fear, seeming to remember what they were talking about earlier. They were used to picking on their schoolmates who associated themselves with their idol, and neither the school's faculty nor their parents had criticized them. The cycle would start with jeers and taunts, eventually becoming physical violence if the victim did not produce the expected reaction.

That was the case with Tokunaga Emi, who proved to be insusceptible to their mockery. It did not help that many were also jealous because of her high academic standing and pretty face. Their parents would endlessly praise the child, telling their children to study like her, be obedient like her, be friendly like her; needless to say, if Satoru's fanbase did not start it, someone else would.

"Stop scaring my sister!" A voice interrupted the silence inside the room. It eased the tension on the children's shoulders as some of them went out of the room to ask for help.

"Oniichan!" The girl who was unknowingly labeled as 'high-pitched' in the boy's mind called out as if seeing her savior. She suspiciously looked a lot like her brother; closing his left eye, he presumed they were twins.

The boy had a larger-than-average build which gave off a menacing look. It might be the reason why her sister had gone around the school unconstrained; there was actually someone who could beat up a regular primary school student and back her up. But Satoru was not an average child, and even for experienced jujutsu sorcerers, he was a force to be reckoned with. So when the boy charged at him without fear, the white-haired boy defended casually by raising his leg and kicking the boy down using the heel of his foot.

Satoru continued to kick the boy after he slammed on the ground, his hands resting on the pockets of his pants. None of the children dared to stop him as they watched bruises appear on the boy's body.

After a while, a small figure appeared beside the room entrance, casually leaning on the door frame.

"Ruru, you're about to kill him."

"Ruru, you're about to kill him."

Emi leaned on the door frame, feeling her stress levels increase as she watched the future strongest jujutsu sorcerer beat up a normal kid. Well, for starters, she could not say she was not enjoying the sight of the major school bully getting his retribution.

The girl knew the twins. She encountered both of them way too many times after her transfer. The sister disliked her for being with Satoru, while the boy hated her for being a know-it-all during lectures; the latter was her classmate after all. Emi wanted to disregard the issue as much as possible, and it was no use to get annoyed by children decades younger than her. The mere action of laying her hands on primary school children repulsed her, but who knew they would first anger Satoru.

Emi wondered what they did to attract the white-haired boy's ire.

Satoru retracted his foot and grinned upon noticing her presence. "Emi-chaaan," he called out with a relaxed drawl.

The girl raised one eyebrow, amused as she watched the boy walk towards her.

"Let's go home?" Emi touched the white-haired boy's chin with one calloused finger, moving his face left and right, making sure there were no injuries. "Good," she muttered to herself, seemingly satisfied that Satoru was not attacked.

"Let's go home." The boy confirmed jovially as he placed both hands behind his head, his eyes forming crescents when they met hers.

Emi shrugged, deciding not to ask about what happened. The boy had his ways to deal with things—he would never attack unprovoked. Unless he struck with killing intent, she would let him do what he wanted. Plus, whatever happened today would indeed be dealt with by the Gojo family. There was a reason why the manga Gojo Satoru felt he could hold the world in the palm of his hands.

The next day, the school bully was absent from class, and none of the children and teachers discussed what happened the day before.

1999 August 15

Emi jumped down on the school's rooftop bemusedly, trailing behind the Gojo family head along with Satoru.

They were on their usual exorcism routine where they would go to curse infested areas and exorcise the spirits. Satoru's grandfather would usually watch over them and lower the curtain (帳, Tobari) that allowed them to hide their activities, successfully leaving out innocent civilians in the process. As part of the three big families, they were in charge of looking over their areas, removing curses they deemed harmful. Sometimes more powerful curses would be given to the Jujutsu Tech students for the experience.

"I'll go outside. You two should be able to manage it again without my help." The older man raised his two fingers and started to deploy the barrier. "Emerge from the darkness, blacker than darkness. Purify that which is impure."

The girl watched the Gojo's head silently, waiting for him to finish. She never had a real conversation with Satoru's grandfather. Most of their discussion was between an employer and a subordinate. It was a good thing they would rarely meet unless needed, or else she would need to crack her head open to think of a conversation starter.

The older man left via Gojo family teleportation technique, leaving the two children alone on the rooftop. Satoru nodded at her, signaling they should go inside the school building. The boy would typically be at the front while she would take the rear. He was assigned to take the offensive while Emi would use a sneak attack.

Both of them agreed that whoever had the fastest reaction speed would charge first, although until now, Satoru never failed to land the first blow.

Emi once again would like to curse at the boy's talent. Everything was handed to him on a silver platter, and the girl would very much like to complain to the god of this world.

Satoru tapped one slender finger against his lips as he raised his hand before her. "Shhh ."

Emi's steps came to a halt, her cursed energy circulating her body non-stop. An oversized silhouette appeared in front of them, slowly moving inch by inch. The cursed spirit appeared; its body consisted of blobs without eyes. It had yet to notice the presence of intruders after the girl covered the two of them with scattered reversed cursed energy disrupting the normal flow of the surroundings.

With the signal of his hands, Satoru disappeared from his original position. He then appeared mid-air beside the blob of cursed mass, taking the initiative by giving a dropkick, paralyzing the opponent. Emi engaged in the pursuit, following the curse as it rapidly flew along the school's hallway after receiving the attack. The girl waved her hand, then snapped her finger as an invisible force subdued her enemy.

Emi's cursed technique consisted of two parts, vibration, and force. The former could use moving air particles as long-ranged attacks depending on the given fighting field. In contrast, the latter was the absence of movement where she could form them in any shape she wanted, converting them into a physical force. She would habitually use a large hand or a gigantic medical tool depending on what was needed.

The range did not matter. Granted, Emi should not be visually impaired, or else she would not be able to attack at all.

Satoru ended the fight after he dealt with the finishing blow. The cursed spirit they exorcised was at grade level two, and seeing how fast they defeated it, each of the children should be on par with a curse grade level one or higher. In truth, if she and the boy had a fight with all their cards on the table, Emi would probably lose—although it would not be an easy win for the latter, considering she specialized in sneak attacks.

"Nicely done!" Satoru pushed himself upright, eyeing the slouched girl at the corner, and shook his head in good humor. "Emi-chan, you know we have to do more of these in the future, right?"

"I know. That doesn't mean I am not allowed to act negatively towards these tasks, right?" She puffed out, using her fingers to quote in the air. They had been going at it since the start of the year, and if Emi did not know any better, she would have thought the Gojo family aides were placing cursed spirits in public places so that they could exorcise them.

Frankly, the only one who was enjoying these 'short excursions' (as the Gojo family head had called it) was Satoru after finding out he could go wild under his grandfather's watch. On the other hand, Emi was focused on finishing the tasks early to rest, hence why she specialized in ambush rather than sword arts or taijutsu.

Satoru had turned a deaf ear to her complaints as he reached for his pockets to get a piece of gum. "So you met with your psychologist earlier. What did he say?" He asked in between chews, gradually closing his eyes from tiredness.

"She ," Emi corrected, leaning on a window for support as he gestured for the boy to come over. "Well, I really can't say I've been dealing with cursed spirits at a young age. That is why I am having nightmares left and right." The girl had told him the gist of her bad dreams but never the cause, constantly dismissing it as over-exposure from curses.

"So?"

"So I think the treatment would never be effective unless I come clean." The little girl pulled out an embroidered handkerchief from her clothes. She folded it horizontally to use as a blindfold and placed it over the boy's eyes when he came over. "Is this better?" She asked after she tightened the knot behind his head.

"Hmm." Satoru hummed in agreement turning to face his childhood friend, glad he could still visualize his surroundings. "This is neat. Without vision, I don't have to suffer from sensory overload."

"Sadly, you won't be able to get hired with a blindfold on." Emi styled his white hair, putting it up so the blindfold would not move too much. If he decided to wear them for 24 hours a day, people would think he was blind. Although that was not, in any way, a bad thing, companies would usually reject people with a disability who said they were less productive.

Now that she thought about it, Satoru initially used bandages as blindfolds. Now she gave him an idea, well, fuck .

"Then I'll teach at the college. It's better anyway." Satoru stuck his tongue out, taking the gum off his mouth and covering it using its previous wrapper.

Emi decided to comment about his prospects, mentally noting to find a jujutsu sorcerer who worked in psychiatry, so she did not have to filter her words. "You'd better work on your character, or you'd irritate your students to death," she mentioned as she opened the school window to jump out.

1999 December 24

"Nah, you're not taller than me." Emi narrowed her eyes, thinking solemnly as her mind refused to accept the boy in front of her was now half a head taller.

"Ah, Emi-chan, reality might be harsh, but you need to accept it." Satoru casually flicked her forehead, peering down at her while indulging in some childish bragging they had not done for a while.

"Considering you recently celebrated your birthday, I'll let it pass—" the little girl rolled her eyes, jumping down from the railing she used earlier as a shield to avoid the cursed spirit they fought. "—and, I don't understand why I have to exorcise curses on Christmas ."

Satoru patted her head while a smile was plastered on his face. "Someone's gotta do it."

"Well, I'm way sure that it's not supposed to be me." Emi puffed her cheeks, visibly frustrated about being dragged outside of her home on Christmas eve.

Koichi visited them for Christmas, and truthfully, they were finished with their preparation. Emi's father, who was kept in the dark about her work, insisted she should sleep early so she could wait for a certain bearded man to barge inside their home to drop her Christmas gifts. To her surprise, it came true, but instead of an older man, a white-haired boy knocked on her window to drag her out and exorcise some curses. Hopefully, her father would not check her room, or else she would have trouble explaining the reason she disappeared.

It was winter and the nights seemed to turn colder as the day went by. Emi could not help but shiver from time to time, most of her clothes were left inside her room, and the only thing she was wearing below her thin parka was her pajamas. It was a good thing it was not easy for jujutsu sorcerers to get sick, or else she would drag herself back to her room to rest right away.

Suppressing the smirk on his face, Satoru removed his knee-length jacket to drape it on the girl's shoulders while he asked her with false innocence. "Are you shaking because you're excited about your gift?"

More like I'm dying because of the cold.

The girl snickered, not expecting anything from her friend. Emi doubted Satoru would give anyone anything except souvenirs and candies. He recently took up the hobby of going to different tourist spots around Japan, searching for sweet desserts. He would usually be absent from school, which also meant she had no sparring partner. The girl also benefited; of course, she got to eat whatever the boy brought back.

With all the sweet food she was given, Emi was suspicious if she were being conditioned to like the boy's presence because she knew she would be given food.

Satoru abruptly lifted her over his shoulders, using his jacket to wrap her in a cocoon. The girl who was lost in her thoughts shook. "Yup! Time to go home."

"Ruru."

"Yeah?" The white-haired boy inspected his handiwork and spun the wrapped girl's body around to see if there was any skin exposed to cold.

"Don't drop me, or I'll fuck you up," Emi warned, not wanting to admit she was slowly feeling comfy while being manhandled roughly. Her bundled body started to feel warm, and despite the urge to make a fuss, she settled with pushing down her complaints.

Satoru did not reply and only showed an impish grin that Emi, whose face was behind him, could not see. The boy started to wear darker blindfolds whenever his eyes felt tired. Although it proved helpful, it was still impossible to do 24 hours a day since he had yet to get used to it and master the Six Eyes. This ocular jujutsu technique could distinguish between different types of energy. The flow of curse energy let him distinguish objects from living things akin to high-resolution thermography.

Surprisingly the trip back home was not bumpy; Emi even fell asleep on the way. When she woke up, she was lying on her bed, the white-haired boy sitting beside her with closed eyes. The girl reached for the clock on her bedside table, checking for the time.

23:50

Ten minutes before Christmas.

"I don't understand why you like using military time so much." She heard Satoru say behind her as she heard some shuffling.

Emi turned around, sitting so she could see the boy better. "I'm used to it." Before. The words she wanted to add were left unsaid, a pang of pain appearing suddenly in her heart.

"Well," he started, scratching his cheek as he faced her. "I brought something." Satoru haphazardly fished a box from his jacket's inner pocket, opening it to show her a silver necklace. The pendant was a small cockroach with a ruby in the middle.

"Damn , and I thought there was a change in character. I should have expected it since this was my first gift from you." Emi could not help but show disgust on her face as the boy's smile turned wider.

Satoru shrugged, not bothered by her expression; instead, he looked a little proud as he pulled the necklace off the box. "Then I'll put it on you."

Emi stuck her tongue out but agreed nevertheless. "Yeah, yeah."

23:57

Satoru narrowed his eyes, examining if his gift looked good on the girl's neck. "I think it's nice."

"Disregarding the cockroach ? I think so too." Emi looked back at her reflection in the mirror.

23:58

"Hey, don't you have a gift for me too?" The boy nudged her as he pouted. A little offended that Emi did not give him any gifts.

The girl froze, quickly thinking if she had anything she could give as a gift in her drawer. "Wait—"

23:59

"—a bracelet?"

"If I had time, I would have tried to find something more offensive than that." Emi looked back at Satoru, who was curiously examining her Christmas present.

The boy skillfully wore the chain using his one hand, satisfaction evident from his face. "Would this make me more handsome?"

"No," she immediately replied with no hesitation.

00:00

"Oi, merry Christmas, Ruru-kun." Emi bumped her fists against Satoru's as a grimace bloomed on her face.

The white-haired boy watched the silver bracelet dangle on his wrists, then replied with a small voice, "Merry Christmas, Emi-chan."

A/N

The school scene and christmas scene became much longer than it was supposed to be while I have to rack my brains to make the other important scenes long, please. For others, I edited the first chapter so that it would say that she read the jjk manga, just to clarify. Plus, about the end lmao I was reading the jjk fanbook I also made one for Emi!

Ps. should I add other fanbook info whenever a character appears?
