Summary: While watching the 40th Vytal Festival tournament together, Ruby and Weiss become victims of the Kiss Cam.
"Ruby, I'm in five-inch heels. Will you stop shoving me?" Weiss admonished.
It had only been an hour since their battle with Haven's Team ABRN. They won their fight and will advance to the next round, but it wasn't an easy victory. The battle had left her body exhausted, her arms weighed heavier than a block of concrete, and her wobbling legs were ready to give out any minute. How Ruby could still have so much energy left was beyond her knowledge.
"Can't you move your feet any faster?" Ruby kept on badgering despite Weiss' protests. "It's not like your heels are broken."
"My heels might not be broken, but my body feels like it is," Weiss retorted. "If you're that impatient, then go on ahead without me. I'll catch up with you later."
"What?" Ruby pressed her lips thinly together, but it wasn't like Weiss could see her frown. Her partner was more focused on walking down the stairs of the colosseum. "It's our first ever Vytal Festival together, so we should… y'know… go together."
"You do realize we spend every day together, right?"
"We didn't go to the dance together," Ruby grumbled underneath her breath. She vividly remembered the event as if it had happened yesterday. She was standing next to the punch bowl, dateless.
"What was that?" Weiss asked. She couldn't hear Ruby over the cheering crowd in Amity Colosseum.
"I said we need to hurry up together!"
"If you want to walk together that badly, then we're going at my pace." Weiss took another slow but steady step down the stairs.
"But Weiss," Ruby groaned. She grabbed her partner around the shoulder, then pulled her close to make way for the people rushing to their seats. "We're causing traffic because you're traveling at the speed of a snail."
"I don't care," Weiss scoffed, but the apologetic smile she flashed to people shouldering past them said otherwise. "My legs are sore and hurting."
"I'll carry you," Ruby offered.
"Please don't."
"You're walking so slow though!"
"I don't care. We're going at my pace."
"But Team JNPR is about to go head to head with Team BRNZ," Ruby said impatiently. "The match is about to —"
"Three."
"Two."
"One."
"Begin!"
"— Ahhh, see!" Ruby cried out, trying to talk over the loudspeakers and the whistling crowd. On the Jumbotron, Team JNPR rushed forward for a frontal assault. "What did I say? I told you the match was about to start!"
"And what did I say? I told you we were walking at my pace," Weiss reminded her once again.
Even though the colosseum was shaking with excitement, Weiss could feel Ruby bouncing restlessly behind her. If impatience were an entity, then Ruby would be its embodiment. Ironically, Ruby had trained herself to be patient and quiet. Weiss had seen her partner stare into a sniper scope for hours without budging a muscle.
"We'll never make it to our seats at this rate," Ruby complained.
"Then how about we watch from here?" Weiss gestured to the empty seats near the aisle. It wasn't like the front row seats that were exclusively reserved for them, but the view was still decent.
"But what about Blake and Yang?"
"What about them?" Weiss asked.
"They're expecting us to be down there with them…?"
"Either we spend the whole match strolling our way over there, or we sit here and enjoy the match. We can move seats during the intermission."
That was a compromise Ruby could agree on because she didn't want to miss any more of their friends' battle. They both sat themselves down and watched the match. Team JNPR was leading on the board with their exceptional teamwork.
Ruby cupped around her mouth and cheered at the top of her lungs. "Yeah! Go get 'em, Jaune!"
"Well, he's certainly improved," Weiss noticed.
"All thanks to the extra training Pyrrha has put him through."
"He's not bad, but he's not great either."
The match dragged out, but it ended in what they had predicted — Team BRNZ's crushing defeat. The crowd celebrated Team JNPR's victory with well-deserved cheers, and Ruby and Weiss were applauding with them. The screen captioned and displayed Team JNPR's victory for the world to see, but the camera soon cut to the audience after the waving victors walked off the stage.
"Let's go before the next match begins," Weiss said. As soon as she stood from her seat, Ruby grabbed onto her sleeve and tugged her back down to sit.
"No, wait! Hold on!" Ruby exclaimed with excitement. She pointed to the panning camera. "Look, look, look! They're showing people on the screen!"
Weiss rolled her eyes because she didn't understand why Ruby was so fascinated about that. "We were on television an hour ago."
"But this is way different," Ruby gushed. "Oh my gosh. Weiss, the crowd is doing the wave."
Weiss glanced at the screen and saw the near-end of the stadium wave, which failed to continue moments later. Several people tried to instigate another wave, but it was unimpressive and short-lived. Ruby leaped out of her seat and waved her arms wildly around.
"Ruby, sit down. You're embarrassing me."
"But I want to be on the screen too," Ruby whined. She continued to wave her hands for the camera, but she was unable to grab its attention. She gave it a rest and sat back down. "Darn it. Imagine what Blake and Yang would say if they saw us on the screen. I bet they'd be super jealous."
"I doubt they'd be jealous," Weiss said flatly. "I know for a fact that I wouldn't be."
"That's because you like to be boring. Blake and Yang, on the other hand, they're not boring. If they saw me up there, they'd say —" Ruby brought an arm around Weiss' shoulder and pulled her in. She did her best impression of what their teammates would say. "— Wow! Is that Ruby on the screen? She looks really, really cool. I'm so glad she's our team leader."
Weiss smiled at Ruby's antics and gave her a light shove. Though, it didn't make her partner let go of her. Ruby held onto her like glue, a habit that she grew to adore. "You're so annoying. Plus, I'm not a boring person."
"Okay, you're not boring," Ruby admitted. "But you are serious all the time."
"I'm not serious all the time," Weiss politely disagreed.
"Most of the time then," she teased playfully.
"There's nothing wrong with being serious."
"Psh, that's what serious people always — Uhh, W-Weiss...?"
The crowd roared all of a sudden. Whistling. Hooting. The noises filled the stadium.
"What?" Weiss said.
Ruby's voice came out strangled as she pointed to the screen in hesitation. "We're on the big screen."
"Oh, goody," Weiss tried to sound excited for her. The crowd started to chant something. "Your wish finally came true."
When Weiss cast a sidelong glance to the screen, she quickly did another double-take. Her body was frozen in place as she gaped at the screen in disbelief. She now understood why Ruby had suddenly become off-toned. There, projected on the large screen for the entire world to misconstrue, was her and Ruby sitting huddled together. The live image of them was framed in a pink heart, and at the bottom inscribed in large letters was 'Kiss Cam'.
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"
Weiss could hear the crowd clearly now as their chants were ringing inside her ears from all directions. Her cheeks flushed in bright red as the restless crowd wouldn't give up. When she turned back to Ruby, she found those wide silver eyes already staring back at her. Her cheeks were equally glowing red too.
"We're not a couple!" Weiss panicked, trying to make up some excuse. "We're just friends!"
"Best friends!" Ruby blurted out immediately after. But the crowd just grew louder, as if they were trying to test how true that statement was.
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"
"Oh, come on guys!" Ruby kept on lamenting when the camera wasn't panning away from them. They were in the spotlight, and the crowd wanted to see some lip-smacking action. "She doesn't want to kiss me."
Taken aback by Ruby's assumption, Weiss gave her a strange look. "Why would you think I don't want to kiss you?"
"Wait, you want to kiss me?" Ruby stared back at Weiss, dumbstruck, but also hopeful.
After hearing Ruby say it out loud, Weiss blushed. "I'm not opposed…"
The cogs in Ruby's head were turning, but she wasn't sure if she should take the leap of faith. "But friends don't kiss…"
While it was too late for Weiss to take back what she had said, she made peace with her regrets by taking a bold step forward. "What if… I want to be more than best friends?"
Those words echoed louder than the stadium itself. Ruby made a hand over to Weiss' cheek and leaned further in for a kiss. The crowd was cheering. One soft kiss on the lips became two, then three, then more. Shortly, Ruby had lost count of how many she had received and given when Weiss deepened their kiss.
When they simultaneously parted, Ruby noticed they were no longer the center of attention as the Kiss Cam found new victims to prey on. She also noticed that Weiss had her middle finger flipped at the camera.
"Who's that for?" Ruby started laughing.
Weiss smiled and answered proudly.
"For my father."
Meanwhile, Jacque was angrily chewing on his desk when he saw his daughter on television.
