As Azula ran through the forest, whispers came with the wind.
Whispers grew to talking. And talking grew to loud shouting.
The fog itself would swirl and curl, forming figures. Ghosts and specters. Everywhere.
"Azula… Where are you going?" Zuko asked as he stood in front of Azula. Wearing the finest of royal fire Empire garbs. And that stupid crown in his hair which had previously been worn by Avatar Roku.
"Leave me alone!" Azula exclaimed as she turned and ran only to face an old man with gray hair and sad looking eyes.
"Niece. The path you are walking now is one that will only bring misery. To you and those around you." Iroh spoke in a sad tone.
"SHUT UP!" Azula shouted. "You don't know anything! You are a miserable old fool."
Iroh was quiet as he just stood there.
"I don't need you! I don't need any of you!" Azula exclaimed.
"Then why are you looking like someone who is breaking into pieces?" Iroh asked.
"I TOLD YOU TO SHUT UP!" Azula slammed her fist towards Iroh only to have it vanish into thin air and she grabbed her head. "Why… Why did it happen. How could Zuzu win?!"
"Do you really want to know?" A female voice whispered and Azula turned to face her former friend.
The deadly assassins with her many knifes. Mais cat like eyes though were cold and sharp as knifes themselves.
"You already know…." Mai whispered. "People fear you Azula. But they love Zuko."
"They are right to fear me! They should fear me!" Azula stated. "What is a commander whom don't have her soldiers fear her? How then are they supposed to follow orders?! Becuase of Love? Honor?!"
A new voice entered the mix. An old woman. "You would be surprised what loyalty people will have when someone actually fights for them."
Azula turned to face a pair of old twins. Lo and Li, her old masters in combat.
"Prince Zuko fought for his people. Had their best interest at heart."
"You how-ever burned their lands and would have them live in fear."
"With the Avatar. Zuko sought to find balance to benefit everyone."
"You were on a selfish quest to gain your fathers love. All for yourself."
Then both twins raised their hands and pointed at Azula as they spoke in unison.
"You are the architect of your own fall!"
Azula stumbled back as she gasped. "I am better…" she said. "I am stronger. I am smarter! It should have been mine! The throne was mine! They should all worship me!"
"And then what?"
Azula had to turn again. This time to see her brothers pathetic scarred face. And that painful look in his eyes which was just like Ursas! Now did Azula realize. His face… His expressions. His timid nature. It was all so very much like Ursa. And it had made her sick to her stomach in the years where Ursa had left them but Zuko had yet to be banished.
"If you had gotten the throne." Zuko breathed. "Would you then have been happy?"
"Of course I would have!" Azula stated. "No one would dare betray me again!"
"A world where everyone fears you but no one loves you." Zuko commented. "Sounds…. Sad."
"I don't need your pity." Azula snorted.
"But Azula…" Zuko breathed as his face seemed to morph. The hair grew longer and the Scar vanished as he walked and suddenly a woman was in his place. With the same golden eyes and the same sad look. "Why would you want that?" Ursa asked as she reached towards Azula. "Let me help you…. Azula…. Please."
"No…" Azula shook her head as she stepped back. "Stay away from me! You're not even here!"
"Azula…" Ursa whispered. "Azula…" and she vanished into fog as suddenly growls came from all directions and Azula gasped.
"Stay away." she looked around. "I am Princess Azula! The strongest warrior in the fire nation army aside from the fire lord himself!" she stated as she looked in all directions. "I was bred and raised to be the perfect weapon! Don't you realize?" she hissed as the eyes seemed to come from every direction and Azula roared as she send what should have been a fire ball at the yellow shining eyes.
But nothing but sparks came from Azulas fist. "No… I wont be defeated so easily." she gasped. "NO!" she turned and ran.
Noriko gasped as she stood in front of the pond and from the pond itself a spirit had risen. She looked like half tree half a woman, with multiple faces on the tree trunk that made her head. And face… floating around her. Constantly being created and then send off. Morphing and shaped.
"So…" The spirit spoke. Her deep voice ringing through the forest, echoing with the trees. "You have returned to me. It is never enough is it? I perform miracles and still you come ask for more."
Noriko swallowed. "Please." she asked. "I left my memories behind here didn't I?" she asked. "I need them back. That's all I ask." she said.
"So you aren't satiesfied." Mother of faces muttered.
"Things have changed." Noren said holding Norikos shoulder. "You saved Ursas life by offering her a new face! How-ever. Now the man who wanted Ursa is dead is gone. She is no longer in danger… Her daughter though. Needs her help."
"Ah so the menace who is running wild in my forest is your daughter?" Mother of faces asked.
"You… Know where she is?" Noriko asked.
"This is my forest." Mother of faces informed. "My branches goes through the ground to all the corners. And all the lesser spirits lives under my protection in this forest! Your daughter is disturbing their peace! They are not happy. And I don't blame them… I am not happy either. She is breaking the branches of my trees! And making such a loud noise!"
"I'll get her out of your forest." Noriko promised. "Just… Don't hurt her. Please."
Mother of faces learned over. "Get her out of here." she demanded. "Make sure she doesn't return. Swear this to me and you will have your memories back."
Noriko gasped. "I promise…" she breathed. "I swear to you!"
"Know though." Mother of faces said. "Your memories are tied to your face. To restore your memories I also have to restore your face."
Noriko gasped.
"It's okay." Noren said. "The reason you had to change was because of Ozai. He's gone. You're safe." he said. "You can even go to the capital now. To see Zuko if you want. We can go together."
Noriko turned to Noren. Then smiled lightly. "I'm a little scared." she admitted. "Will I change? Become another person."
"You didn't before." Noren assured. "Azula recognized you even with a different face. It'll be okay."
Noriko smiled as she leaned over and kissed Noren deeply on the lips then turned to the mother of face. "I'm ready." she said. "Give me my memories back…. Please."
"Very well then." Mother of faces reached out a hand that now covered Noriko's entire face. "This is the last time I will do either of you any favors! I do not want to feel either of your presence here ever again! Remember!"
"I understand." Noriko whispered from under Mother of faces hand. "Thank you."
And then, there was a brilliant bright glow forcing Noren to squint his eyes. As the glow faded. The mother of faces retrieved back into the pond and vanished under the surface while the woman fell to her knees.
"NORIKO!" Noren ran to the womans side and held her shoulders.
For a moment she sat there, with bowed head. And then she sniffed.
"Noriko…" Noren whispered. "Ursa." he tried and then she turned her head to reveal a beautiful face.
Age had lead the way for some wrinkles, she looked tired and worn. But still her face was soft and delicate. Her eyes warm and glowing even with tears falling down her cheeks.
Noren gasped for a breath. "You're…" he was lost for words. "You're beautiful." he couldn't help but say. "I mean you always were either way but…"
Ursa smiled a little amused as she sniffed. "I remember now." she said. "Everything." and her voice broke.
"Ursa." Noren embraced her. Holding her tightly. "It's okay. Things are going to be okay."
"She needs me." Ursa cried. "She's my daughter and she needs me!"
"Yes… Let's go find her then." Noren nodded as he stood up pulling Ursa up with him. "You're good to go right?" he asked concerned.
"Yes. I can go." Ursa nodded determined.
"Come on then!" Noren exclaimed as he ran pulling Ursa with him.
"Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!" Azula screamed as she ran through the forest but the voices wouldn't leave. They came from all sides. From above and below.
"You always used fear to control those around you."
"Your hurt them! Why would you do that!"
"This path will only lead to pain and suffering."
"You're burning everything in your path!"
"You're a monster."
"AAAAARGHHH!" Azula screamed. "I TOLD YOU TO SHUT UP!"
And then… there was silence… and eerie silence which seemed to be even worse than the echoing voices. Wide-eyed did Azula look around and then… That voice. Strong and powerful. Belonging to such a powerful man.
"Azula." Sounded the voice, filled with disappointment.
Wide-eyed Azula turned to face a man who was towering far above her and her lip quivered as she sniffed. "Father…"
"You failed me. Azula." Ozai spoke as he stepped forward. "And you know what happens to people who fail me." he reached forward a hand, burning with flames. Reaching towards her face.
"No… I'll be good. I'll be perfect. I wont mess up again. I swear." Azula gasped as she stepped backwards.
"You shall learn what pain and suffering is like." Ozai whispered almost kindly as he walked closer and closer. "Perhaps then. You will finally be of some use to me."
And then Azula stumbled as she fell down to the ground while the Fire Lord himself came mercilessly closer.
Azula was whimpering. She couldn't even speak.
"You will never fail me again!" Ozai exclaimed as he held up a hand filled with fire and flames.
"NOOOOOO!" A woman screamed as she ran through the bushes. "DON'T TOUCH MY DAUGHTER!" and she launched for Ozai only for Ozai to vanish into thin air and the woman gasped.
"What… An illusion?" She asked and then she turned only for Azula to gasp by the sight of her face. "Azula!" Ursa gasped as she ran towards her.
"No… No stay away." Azula shook her head. "You're not real! You're not."
And then a pair of soft hands touched Azulas shoulders and she wide-eyed looked up to meet a pair of soft yellow eyes filled with tears.
"Azula…" Ursa swallowed. "I am so sorry." she said and then she embraced Azula in a tight hug. "I will never let him hurt you again. You hear me?" she asked. "He wont touch you! I wont let him. I wont." she cried as she held Azula as tight as she possible could.
Azula gasped and then it was like… Something broke inside of her. Simply broke and she burst into tears as she grabbed Ursa and clung unto her with all of her might. While she cried loud. Ugly. Completely un-princess like sobs.
"URSA!" Noren came running through the bush's and then halted by the sight of them. "Oh thank Agni." he gasped. "You're okay." he fell to his knees. "You're both okay."
Ursa looked up at Noren. Without letting go of Azula for a single second. "No… We're not. Azula needs help."
"I know." Noren replied in a somber tone. "It wont be easy. It might even be impossible… But at least we have to try." he said. "She's your daughter."
Ursa exhaled deeply, clearly relieved. "Yes." she said as Azula cried into her chest and Ursa held her. Gently stroking her hair. "It's okay darling. Things are going to be okay now." she whispered.
Noren closed his eyes as he looked down. Not approaching the women as Ursa continued to hold Azula and stroke her hair. While Azulas sobs continued to be the loudest son around them.
"Everything will be all right." Ursa continued to rummer. "I wont let him hurt you anymore. I promise."
