"Huh?" Ella pulled the phone away, the screen showing 'call denied'. Her heart sank a bit, her lips morphing into a sad frown.
"What's wrong, Ella?" Kiismet asked, rubbing her eyes free of sleep.
"Adrien just denied my phone call..." The kwami scowled at that, her little wings lifting her to be even with her holders gaze.
"He might be busy, or he pressed the wrong button. Don't assume he did it on purpose, Ella. I'm sure there's a logical explanation, so don't let your emotions cloud you." Kiismet knew she was speaking a hard list for the teen to do, especially with the girl's heightened depression and anxiety. But sometimes the kwami felt the girl needed swift, blunt logic rather than honey-sweet possibilities.
"Yeah... I guess you could be right, Kiis..." Ella sighed, her eyes moving back to her phone. Kiismet sighed herself, poking at Ella's cheek.
"Come on, let's go get something sweet and then we can take a walk over to Adrien's and see what he wanted okay? There's no point in wallowing when you can get up and do something about it."
Ella smiled at her kwami's words, nodding as she stood and collected her papers, carefully putting them away.
Adrien sighed, looking out the window of the car. His phone wasn't at home, so maybe he left it at school? He had been waiting for Ella to call him- he wanted to maybe go get lunch with her or something, like he promised a few days ago, and he had forgotten to ask her earlier at fencing... she was distracting, he'll settle for that reasoning.
"And in some astonishing news, there's been a spectacular theft at the Louvre. Amateur video showed without a shadow of a doubt, that the thief is none other than the famous Cat Noir!"
The news played a clip of the theft, and indeed- it was someone who looked exactly like Adrien's superhero persona.
"This painting is the cat's meow." The thief taunted before leaving something on a bench and running off. Adrien looked at the small tv screen in shock. "Cat's meow?"
The car finally stopped in front of the school, Adrien getting out in an annoyed huff.
"Not only is he a fake, he's a terrible fake!" The teen ran up the steps, intent on transforming to go find out who's impersonating him, but he got just inside the doors before he literally bowled someone over.
"Shoot I'm so sorry! I wasn't- Ella?"
Said girl was just picking herself up off the ground, groaning a little as she did so, when her name caught her attention.
"Adrien!" And cue the blush; it almost made the boy goofy-smile at the adorableness, but he held that smile in, letting a softer one show as he reached out to help her up.
"Are you okay? I didn't mean to run you over like that."
"I'm okay... are you?"
"Yeah I'm good, don't worry about me."
Ella nodded, her eyes traveling over him before they met the floor. At that, Adrien frowned a little, moving a step closer.
"You sure you're okay?" The girl hurriedly nodded, her gaze not really leaving the floor. Adrien didn't believe that, and though the need to find out who was impersonating him was pressing, finding out why Ella was seemingly upset with him was priority.
"Come on, Ella, you know you can talk to me." He gently pressed, slowly reaching a hand out to her- an olive branch, in a way. The girl saw it enter her field of vision, and her gaze moved up to meet him.
"I-I tried calling you... a few minutes ago."
"Oh- I lost my phone somehow. I actually came here to see if I left in my locker." Those words seemed to help Ella's mood slightly, as her face morphed into a frown.
"I don't think you did... my call was denied after ringing twice." Adrien mirrored her frown at her words. Did someone have his phone?
Speaking of phones, Ella's suddenly went off in her hand. She opened the notification, and the news story Adrien heard in the car started playing from her speakers.
"Cat?" Her voice was confused, as she gazed at the screen. Instinctually, Adrien went to answer, but bit his tongue. He's gotta find out who's ruining his name- he doesn't want Ella to think Cat Noir's a thief!
"I'm gonna go double check the locker room- maybe I dropped it on the floor? But yeah, umm... I wanted you to call to ask you if umm... you wanted to go eat sometime? Ya know, like get lunch or dinner or something like that? Or like a snack and take a walk or something-"
"Adrien, you're rambling." Ella giggled, the blond blushing scarlet as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"But... yes. That sounds like fun. Do you wanna call me when you find your phone?" Ella asked, her tone going soft as her fingers nervously gripped at her skirt.
"I promise that's the first thing I'll do once I find it." Adrien held out his pinkie, prompting another giggle from his crush before Ella wrapped her little finger around his own.
"I'll talk to you later, then..." Adrien nodded, waving as Ella made her way out of the building.
"You're so smitten with her~" Plagg teased, poking his head out of Adrien's jacket. The teen just shook his head and ran to the locker room to transform.
"Cat Noir a thief? I've heard of tall tales but that is ridiculous." Ella shook her head, hopping over the school steps into the bushes. Kiismet floated beside her head, frowning.
"The akuma must have the ability to copy someone's appearance."
"But why Cat Noir? What did he do to..." Ella's brain thought back to the ceremony. Cat had been talking to Théo about something that made the man storm off. Was the villain him because of whatever Cat said?
"Let's go see what's going on, and I hope Marinette doesn't flake out as Ladybug again..."
"Ella!"
"What, Kiis? Remember when Raven looked at Ladybug's fated path? Usually I forget what happened as Raven when your 'Light the way' power is used but when we used it that time, I remember everything I saw. Don't ask me how..." Ella frowned, crossing her arms. Kiismet just stared in disbelief. That was a concrete rule in place- to prevent the civilian form of the Raven Miraculous from knowing anyone's fated paths! How is Ella suddenly able to remember what is seen as Raven with 'Light the way'?!
The kwami frowned, thinking hard. The only thing she could think of was talking to Guardian of the Miraculous...
"Can we just go and figure out this Cat Noir mess before we worry about that, Kiis? One thing at a time, for my anxiety?" Ella begged. The little bird stayed silent a second more before giving a heavy sigh and nodding.
"Alright then. Kiismet, touch the sky!"
A minute or so later, Raven landed outside the Louvre alongside Ladybug.
"Mr. Mayor, this is ridiculous. I'm sure there's a simple explanation."
"Besides the one where the pair of us know for a fact that Cat Noir is nowhere near a thief?" Raven deadpanned, earning a nod from her leader.
"Kitty's in the slammer, Ladybug, Raven."
"Don't think you'll be able to keep him in there!" Raven fumed, ready to break past the cops and save her partner.
"Now, now- leave it to the experts, you two. We've got it under control."
"Last time you said that, Stoneheart almost destroyed Paris! Raven's-" The girl's call was cut off by Ladybug's hand over her mouth.
"Calm down, Raven. I know you're frustrated- I am too. But let's think this out rationally. You know Cat can get out of there with his 'Cataclysm', so we can expect he'll be pouncing out any minute."
"Pouncing? He's gotten to even you with the cat puns!" Raven burst out laughing, ignoring a blushing Ladybug trying to explain she hadn't meant it.
Waiting for their partner to make a move proved quick, as the walkie-talkie Agent Roger held suddenly burst to life with news that Cat Noir was getting away. Ladybug and Raven ran, heading inside ahead of Agent Roger, only to find all of the police force laying about on the floor.
"Well if he's so innocent, then why is he running away?" The office taunted, drawing a snarl from Raven.
"Well, if you were wrongly imprisoned, wouldn't you run?" Ladybug taunted back, pulling Raven away from the man. Just then, Raven's grappling hook went off, signaling a call from someone.
"Cat! Where are you?" Raven answered, the hooks moving up to reveal a screen. The teen was somewhere outside already, but he wasn't showing enough for the girl to spot a familiar location. She took off up the stairs towards outside, Ladybug on her tail feathers.
"You know I'm innocent, right angel?"
"Of course I do! Now where are you?"
"I'm gonna find the real culprit and save my tail. I'll get back to-" Cat Noir was cut off by the sounds of a helicopter right behind him.
"Cat!"
The girls got outside and saw Cat Noir running away across the rooftops, helicopters following after and calling for him to give up.
"Aren't you two gonna go after him?" Agent Roger whined, catching up to the teens. Raven glared at the man, her wings flaring out and sending her rocketing into the sky after Cat Noir. Ladybug sighed, but responded.
"I think we'll leave it to the experts." And with that, she whipped her yo-yo upwards and zipped away.
Cat managed to get himself to the metro system, vanishing in one side as Cat Noir and coming out the other as Adrien. Taking a moment to breathe, Adrien leaned against an advertisement pole and let Plagg have some air; the kwami stinking up his jacket with camembert.
"If you want my opinion, I'd say the thief was akumatized." Plagg commented, munching away.
"That much I figured. See the lollipop stick? The sculptor had one earlier... How did I not see that jealousy coming from a mile away?"
"Yours or his?" Plagg teased, asking innocently.
"Ha ha, so funny..." Adrien grumbled, pushing Plagg back into his shirt. Deciding to run a little bit so Plagg could finish recharging, Adrien headed for the sculptor's studio. He figured it'd be the best place to look for starters.
"Cat! Cat Noir!"
Adrien stumbled almost, his eyes moving to the sky. Above him, Raven was flying, her eyes scanning for her partner. It hurt him to hear the worry in her voice as she looked for him. But he had to deal with his copycat first and keep her safe!
Finally Plagg was ready, allowing Adrien to transform and pounce the rest of the way to the studio. The hero found his target, landing on the skylights of the building.
"Gotcha, copycat." Cat Noir landed inside the studio, his eyes scanning for the guilty party.
Ladybug stood, taking a break in her search for Cat Noir. Raven had just called in, saying she couldn't find him. She sighed, her eyes scanning the city rooftops again before her yo-yo rang again.
"Cat Noir, where are you? Raven and I have been looking for you!"
"I found his den."
"Who?"
"My copycat."
"I'm not getting you."
"Raven would, she was there this morning."
Ladybug groaned, rolling her eyes. "Tell me where you are."
"No, this is between me and him. I got myself into this mess, so I'm gonna get myself out. Don't tell Raven where I am- she doesn't need to get involved in this one."
"You know I can't do that. Cat? Cat!" The call ended. The teen groaned again, muttering some choice words before checking Cat Noir's location... then calling Raven.
"Did you find him?" The girl instantly demanded, the worry evident.
"Yeah, he's at the sculptor's studio- the one from this morning. He said something about getting himself into the mess." And Ladybug flinched as Raven let her own choice words scream through the speaker. A few seconds after the last word leaves her lips, Raven takes a deep breath.
"That damn cat! I'm gonna kill him after all this!" Ladybug sighed, nodding.
"Lets's focus on getting him out of this situation first. Then you can kill him."
"Fine. I'll meet you there."
Cat Noir picked up the little paper he noticed leaning against the lucky cat.
"'Cat's in the bag'?"
The crate exploded in front of him, drawing his arms up to guard his face. But the limbs were suddenly weighed down, Cat realizing he was chained to the floor.
"Cataclysm!"
But a hand grabs his wrist and forces the power to destroy the wood square. Behind him, Copycat smirks and twirls to stand in front of him, just out of reach of Cat's kicks.
"I don't get what Raven or Ladybug sees in you. A fool who so easily falls into my trap." Copycat taunted.
Cat Noir scowls, patting his back for his staff... but it's in Copycat's hand.
"Looking for this? Which one should I pick up? My one or my one?"
Cat's staff starts ringing, the villain smirking at who it is.
"Raven, hurry up. I've caught the impostor at Théo Barbot's workshop."
"I'll be there in thirty seconds and I'm gonna murder you when I get there."
"No! Don't come here, Raven! It's a trap!" Cat tried to warn his partners but Copycat ended the call.
"Too late, Cat. Raven and Ladybug on her way, which was my plan all along."
"They won't be duped. They knows me too well.
"I know you well too." Copycat commented, looking at his akumatized photo.
"And from now on, Raven'll love me, not you!"
"Not gonna happen- you don't know anything about her!"
"I can learn- just like how she can learn about me!"
Cat growled, baring his teeth.
"Raven's not gonna let you... and she'll know you're not me!"
Copycat charged Cat and knocked him over, reaching for his ring. But a whizzing noise and flapping distracted him to the arriving females.
"Cat Noir! He really looks like you!" Ladybug was shocked, stopping short of the males while Raven stood behind her, those grey eyes critical.
"That's because I am me!" Cat groaned, but still had enough sense to wink at his angel.
"Where is his akuma?"
"Inside his ring, of course. Grab it." Ladybug took a second before she kneeled down and reached for the ring. Raven stepped up next to her, her eyes still studying the twin-looking heroes. But Cat watched as her eyes were drawn to his ring as it beeped.
"He even has the same power as you." Ladybug commented, her eyes moving from the ring to the Cat Noirs up to Raven. Cat saw the question in her eyes directed to Raven; even Ladybug knew Raven could tell the real Cat from the fake.
"I have a question for you two. Ladybug, you can get up- and may I ask a favor?" The spotted heroine nodded, standing up and leaning in for Raven to whisper in her ear. After a moment, the pair moved away and Ladybug plugged her ears.
"Only the real Cat Noir would know this, so I wanna hear answers from both of you."
"Of course, Raven!"
"Mon merle?"
Raven's face morphed from its frown to a knowing smirk but she kept going.
"What was the topic of conversation the last time we were at the Eiffel Tower?"
The facial reactions told Raven enough, Cat realized. He felt his own face move into a concerned frown, remembering the dark thoughts he learned were plaguing her mind.
Movement above him drew Cat's gaze to the copycat, seeing a flash of confusion on his face. Raven must have seen it too, cause she tapped Ladybug's shoulder, the girl removing her fingers from her ears.
"We're good- Copycat!" Raven pointed to the Cat Noir on top.
"But I love you and Ladybug, Raven! I'm way better than this mangy alley cat!"
"Sorry but Cat and I have a special bond no one can compete with. And while Cat may annoy Ladybug to pieces but he's always there for us."
"Thanks for the compliment, angel... I think." Shifting up, Cat kicked Copycat away. The villain flipped away, landing by his statue sketches.
"If I can't have you, then nobody will! Cataclysm!"
"Let's wrap this up! Lucky Charm!" From the pink flurry, a spotted spoon appears.
"A spoon? What am I supposed to do with this?"
Copycat charges, aiming his Cataclysm at Cat, but Raven jumps between them, holding Cat's chains up so that Copycat breaks them and frees Cat.
"Excellent job, mon merle~"
"Where's his akuma?" Ladybug asked.
"The photo in his pocket. Let's make it snappy." Cat frowned, his ring beeping in alert.
"Ha ha ha! You're going to change back before me." Copycat brandished both staffs, egging on the fight. Cat growled and ran forward.
"Raven- stay out of this one!"
"Like hell! I'm still gonna kill you for going into this one alone!" Raven yelled, but Ladybug held her back.
"He's fighting to protect you, right? From what Copycat's said, Cat Noir feels like his... 'territory' is being infringed and he's gonna protect what's his." Raven frowned at Ladybug's words but couldn't help the blush creeping under her mask.
"...fine. But promise to keep him safe." Ladybug nodded and leaped forward to join the fray. After a minute, she landed on a beam up above.
"He's pretty good." She commented, watching from her perch as Copycat knocked Cat away. The teen tumbled a little but Raven ran forward and stopped him.
"Don't need to rub it in!" Cat complained, his eyes sliding to his feathered partner at his back.
"I told you girls I was better than him."
"No ones better than my Cat." Raven stood, her hands still on Cat's shoulders.
"Thanks, angel!"
Ladybug flings her yo-yo forward, wrapping it around one of the staffs in Copycat's hand and yanking it up to her.
"But I'm better than both of you!" Ladybug taunts in a sing-song voice, tossing the staff to Cat Noir.
The two Cats keep fighting, fencing almost before Ladybug's yo-yo grabs one of their arms.
"Hey, it's me!"
"He's lying! I'm the real one!"
"Ugh, now you're both annoying me to pieces! Show me your ring. How many pads do you have left?"
Cat's ring beeps first, showing only one pad left, while Copycat refuses to show his.
"Cat Noir, scratch attack!" Ladybug calls, pulling back her yo-yo.
"Really?" Raven couldn't hold back the burst of laughter at Ladybug's cat pun. The group leader just rolled her eyes while Cat smirked and nudged Raven's giggling form with his shoulder.
"Gladly. I love a good cat fight. Rawr!"
"YOU DID NOT JUST MEOW!"
Ladybug chuckled at her partners antics before using her Lucky Vision. It showed Cat Noir's staff, a wooden ceiling beam, her yo-yo and the spoon. Realizing what she needed to make, Ladybug used the smaller items to make a fishing rod. "Time to go akuma fishing!"
Meanwhile, Cat and Copycat grapple, luckily Cat managed to use his feet to prevent Copycat from getting at him, and he unzips the pocket that has the photo.
Ladybug launches the yo-yo string over the beam and it came down over the other side, hooking onto Copycat's belt. Yanking hard, the fishing rod lifted Copycat up to the ceiling.
"Raven's Flight!" The animal form of Raven darted into quick, grabbing the photograph in her beak and flying it back, landing on Ladybug's shoulder and handing the photo over.
"Nice grab, Raven!" Ladybug praised, tearing the photo in two.
"No more evil-doing for you, little akuma. Time to de-evilize! Gotcha! Bye bye, little butterfly." The girls watched the butterfly fly away.
"Miraculous Ladybug!" As the red ladybugs zip about, everything turns back to normal, and Copycat turned back into Théo, Cat catching him once he fell from the ceiling.
"Nice catch!" Ladybug approached, Raven hopping off her shoulder and transforming back.
"I'm so glad you two could tell the real cat from the fake one."
"Once I figured out which cat knew what I was talking about, it was a no-brainer." Raven smiled before her fist came down on top of his head.
"Though next time you decide to try and take an akuma on by yourself, you'll be lucky if Ladybug and I decide to help you!"
"Yes, ma'am..." Cat's ring beeped, the final paw pad flashing fast.
"You two better help the fellow out. His crushes just got crushed. I'll see you later, angel~"
With that, Cat jumped away through the roof.
"That cat is gonna be the death of us..."
"The death of you, not me, girly." Ladybug chuckled, ignoring the half-hearted glare sent her way.
"Ugh... What am I doing here? Ladybug? Raven?"
"I'm sorry I couldn't make it this morning, Théo." The artist, though in awe, quickly pulled out the photo.
"Can you autograph it for me?"
"If you don't need me here, LB, I'm gonna get going. See ya later!" Flapping her wings, Raven took off the same direction as Cat.
Landing back just around the edge of the school, Ella returned, yawning and stretching. Kiismet flopped onto the girl's shoulder, tired. Digging through the bushes, she found her bag and slipped out, heading for the park.
"Did Adrien call you yet?" Kiismet's sleepy voice asked, prompting a head shake.
"No, not yet..."
"Then someone actually might have his phone, and that's why he hasn't called you. He promised, and that boy doesn't seem like one to break a promise, okay?"
"Mhm..."
"Now, let's go get dinner before we find somewhere to hang out before trying to head back."
Adrien met up with Nino the next morning, still lamenting over his lost phone.
"And I couldn't call Ella either... I promised her I'd call..." Nino watched Adrien's face fall at the failed promise he made to his crush.
"Dude I'm sure she understands. You told her you lost your phone, right?"
"Yeah."
"Then she's not gonna hold it against you. From what I can tell, the girl's got a thing for you too and isn't gonna hold something like this against you."
"I hope so... But if I did drop it, then whoever has it found it in the boys locker room. I was checking my voicemail and sending Ella a text in there during fencing practice." The two boys entered the classroom, not noticing the movements coming from Alya and Marinette. The blunette reached into her bag and pulled out the blond's phone, moving just enough to slip the device into his bag, but not carefully enough to not knock the bag over.
"Huh?" Adrien glanced over, seeing his bag on the ground... with his phone sitting just outside the opening.
"What in the... I already looked in here a thousand times!" Nino chuckled.
"You need some time off. I know- let's go to the movies tonight!"
"Hey dudes! Mind if a few friends tag along?" Alya called, motioning between herself and Marinette.
"Sure thing!"
Marinette squealed a bit, her cheeks going red as she looked at Adrien. But her excitement changed to jealously, as she saw Adrien's gaze was locked on the door. The wood had just slid open to reveal Ella... the girl looking a little disheveled. At her appearance, Adrien stood and went over to her, prompting her to move back out the door.
"...Marinette?" Alya's voice pulled the blunette from her staring at the closed door.
"Dude. Ella must be crazy clumsy once she leaves school, huh?" Nino whistled, turning to look at the girls.
"Yeah. That's like the tenth morning she's come in looking like she fell down the stairs." Alya sighed.
"At least Adrien's got her covered." Nino smiled, his eyes moving back to the door. The girls nodded, though Marinette was trying hard to not let her jealousy show. The trio talked for a little bit longer, before the classroom door slid open again and Adrien returned, followed by Ella; though now she looked a bit better.
"You good, Ella?" Alya asked, as the girl took her seat beside Marinette.
"Yeah- just tripped down the stairs this morning. No big deal." She smiled, but one Adrien was beginning to recognize as a fake one to get through the conversation. But he stayed silent, hoping one day he wouldn't have to...
