Loona, having returned to her wolf form, gritted her teeth as she sat at the altar, vigorously flipping through the leather-bound book. There was nothing written about transforming gargoyles into humans or vice versa.
She growled and threw the book at the wall. "Dammit!"
She sulked. She doubted she'd have better luck in the public library.
"You'll never find the transformation spell you're looking for in that stuffy old thing," a mischievous voice observed.
Loona shrieked and bolted around. Standing behind her was an impish man with white blonde hair and pointed ears. She snarled and hunched on all fours, baring her rows of sharp teeth. This man wasn't standing, he was floating inches above the floor.
She retrieved the book and chucked it at his head. "GET OUT!"
The man smirked and tilted his head, the book barely missing him. "Oh! Now that might have hurt me…"
He snapped his fingers and a leather muzzle coiled around Loona's jaws, clamping it shut as a short leash anchored her where she stood, leaving the man just out of reach when she tried to claw his eyes out.
The man took a seat on the steps. He leaned back against the wooden statue of Mary Magdalene as Loona struggled to pry off the muzzle. For something presumably made of leather it was nigh impenetrable.
The impish man grinned. "Oh, you're a fiery one. No wonder Brooklyn has taken a fancy to you."
"Hmm!?" Loona's eyes widened and she stopped struggling.
He stood back up and playfully floated by her side. "Oh, yes. I know him and his kind quite well. Not too unlike humans. Such fun to play with."
He draped his arm around her shoulders and Loona growled.
"As are you, my little wolf pup." He looked her in the eye and said, "And I know you fancy him, too…"
Loona took a swipe at him but he backed away.
He crossed his legs as he continued to levitate. "I must say you've managed well on your own this whole time. You've even found yourself a human disguise. Well done."
Loona scowled. Nosy much?
"And you want to do the same for your beau." He floated headfirst so that he was but an inch away from Loona's snout. "That is just so sweet."
Loona grumbled and crossed her arms. She would've denied it if her mouth weren't clamped shut.
"But you'll never find the transformation spell you need in that silly old Grimoire." The man tilted his head towards the blue spell book, now lying open on the floor. "Much of that magic doesn't work on his kind. Or mine, for that matter. But maybe I can help you."
Loona's ears perked up.
"And by the by, I promise I won't tell Brooklyn of your canine form. Your secret's safe with me."
She looked at him in a way implying that she was willing to hear him out. He snapped his fingers again and the muzzle and leash dissolved into nothing.
She rubbed at her snout and raised an eyebrow. "What's the catch?"
"None whatsoever," the man replied. "I just love to play matchmaker from time to time."
Loona hesitated, then lifted her head. "Go on."
Brooklyn landed outside the dilapidated church and Loona wasn't there waiting for him. He assumed it was okay to enter. The large wooden doors were left unlatched and it took very little to push them open.
He spotted a wild mess of silver hair sitting at a pew closest to the altar, and Loona turned around as he stepped inside.
She was already in her human disguise and had been reading more of Grimoire as she waited. She scrambled to hide it beneath the floorboards again as Brooklyn made his way up the aisle.
She sat up straight and grinned at him.
"Yeah, sorry for not meeting you outside," she nervously chuckled. "It's just… after last night I got to thinking and…" She swallowed. "Oh, crap— How do I…?"
"What she means is…" a mischievous voice interrupted. The white-haired man leaned out from behind the Magdalene statue. "… she has something she wishes to share.
"Puck!" Brooklyn glared at him an spread his wings in alarm. "What are you doing here?"
"It was Lex's turn to babysit tonight," Puck grinned. "So I had some free time."
Loona stood up. This was more awkward than she thought. She had no idea they had a history.
Puck draped his arm around Loona's shoulders and she gave him an annoyed scowl. "Your little sweetheart here told me about your little run-in with a Quarryman last night, and she'd very much like to help you with that," Puck explained.
Sweetheart!? Loona blushed. "Shut up!" She pushed Puck away.
Puck scoffed. "So rude."
"Look, I don't know what you want but we want no part of it!" Brooklyn objected.
"No, wait!" Loona reassured. "Let's just hear him out…"
Brooklyn cautiously lowered his wings.
Puck nodded. "A night and a day as a human."
"Ugh, not this again! Did Demona put you up to this?"
"Not at all. Like I said, this is something Loona wants for you. A temporary measure so that you need not worry about vicious attacks from those abhorrent Quarrymen."
"Couldn't you make it easy for all of us and just get rid of the Quarrymen?" Brooklyn remarked, partially to mock him.
"Oh, believe me, Brooklyn, there are days I wish I could. But it's not so simple as to erase the blackness within man's heart. Not even Father Oberon could accomplish that."
Puck held out his palm and a small package the size of a ring box materialized. A black parcel sealed with a ribbon that shimmered like the moon. He knew Brooklyn wouldn't take it, so he took his wrist and put it in his hand.
"All you have to do is open it," Puck instructed, "and you will walk, live and breathe as a human."
Brooklyn eyed him suspiciously. "There's a catch, isn't there? What do you get out of this?"
Puck leaned forward and smiled. "Oh, Brooklyn, your sweetheart asked me the very same thing."
"Stop calling me that…" Loona grumbled.
"You should know me better by now," Puck continued. "I just want to have a bit of fun. The transformation will only last for one day. So choose your timing wisely. Or you could just never open it at all." He shrugged. "It's up to you. Remember this was dear Loona's idea. It's her gift to you."
Loona scowled at him again. He sure loved getting under her skin.
"You kids have fun!" He stepped back behind the Magdalene statue.
"Wait!" Brooklyn followed him only to see that he had vanished entirely.
"Your friend's a cheeky little bastard, isn't he?" Loona remarked.
"He is not my friend." He certainly hadn't forgotten how Puck once toyed with him, Broadway and Angela for the sake of a magic lesson.
He let out an exasperated sigh and looked at the box he was left with. He said nothing as he took a seat on the steps and Loona sat down beside him.
They hadn't said anything for quite some time. Brooklyn lightly brushed the luminescent ribbon with his thumb. Human for a full day. To walk in the sun for the first time. It could very well be his only chance.
He thought back to the clan, what they would have thought of this. The first thing that sprung to his mind was Goliath's disapproval, and then he remembered that instance Goliath had told them of when the Eye of Odin allowed him to walk in the daylight. Why should he be the only one of their clan to see the sun?
Above all, to be someone else for a night and a day.
Loona fidgeted and bit her lip. "Look, you don't have to do this if you don't want to. We can just forget about it and…"
He drew in a deep breath and he calmly stood up.
"Brooklyn…?"
He tugged at the ribbon and the bow came undone, dissolving into silver-blue dust as it fell.
