Chapter 13

Bo woke them up that morning saying that people were probably coming to the town today.

Charlie didn't know how he knew that and she knew better than to ask. She said thank you, let him leave for the garage and then she went about making herself and her two boys lunch for the day.

This wasn't the first time this had happened, so Charlie knew the drill, though Bo liked to test her on it.

She made Vincent his sandwich first because he would be working in the basement today. Today's sandwich included chips as a snack, carrots and dip as a healthier snack, a twinkie for dessert and two juice boxes. She also had made him tea to take down with him.

"Make sure to get some sun," she said as she handed it to him. "I can't check up on you today, so you gotta make sure you get it yourself."

"Yes Charlie," he said almost wearily. "Hurry up, Bo hates it when you're late."

He leant in to press the softest of kisses to Charlie's lips, which was a sweet gesture he only did when Bo wasn't around, and then he went downstairs. She heard the breakers flipping which meant that the town would be turned on.

Bo too got a lunch. This was a sandwich just like Vincent's. He too got chips, just a different flavour because he didn't like plain. He didn't like carrots so she cut up an apple instead. Then she packed him a thermos of iced tea, and put his coffee into a to-go cup because he always left without his coffee. And without his coffee he was a grumpy old man.

The drill was simple, she'd walk down to the garage with his lunch and drop it off. She'd then go to the convenience store and opened it up.

Almost every person who came to town had car trouble, so Bo would fix up their cars for them and then they'd wander around as they waited.

They almost always ended up in the convenience store looking for food. She had cleared out all the rotten stuff and replaced it with good stuff that people could buy and eat. Bo had said this was stupid, but he did it for her anyway. She even had a pretend till with fake money in it.

In the sense that it was whatever change the boys had that day and some crumpled bills. She wasn't handing out Monopoly money to people.

It was great.

She'd get to sit in the convenience store and talk to the people that came in. Sometimes if they wanted she'd take them for a tour of the wax museum and she got to make up stories about the wax figures and when they were made.

And she always had lunch in Bo's garage with him. She'd have her own food of course, but he'd always insist on sharing with her.

Today was going to be no different. She dropped off Bo's lunch, was told that the two men would be coming in soon, and then they split ways. She opened up the convenience store and then waited.

She heard the sound of a car coming in, with what had to be a very loud or broken muffler. I wasn't long after that the door opened. Charlie stood up put on her best smile and said: "Hello! How may I help you…"

She had more to that sentence but she trailed off when she saw who it was darkening the doorway.

The man in the doorway wasn't much larger than her, but he was stockier and definitely stronger. She also knew he was a wicked shot with a shot gun.

He stood at a solid 6 feet, had shorn short brown hair with a tufty widows peak at the top of his head He was in jeans and a plain black tee-shirt. She could tell that he was sweating in the Louisiana heat.

And he looked both unhappy and pleased as punch at the same time.

She hadn't seen Trevor since the heist. She had a feeling that he and their other partner Callum would look for them, seeing as her and Max had made off with the money. They were supposed to meet up and split the money but Max had tried to kill her and Charlie had stayed here.

"Hello Charlie, how very nice to see that you're alive. Here we were thinking that you and Max had crashed your car into the river," he said locking the door behind him. Great. Just Great.

Charlie backed away and out from behind the counter. She was heading towards the back of store.

"Where's the money Charlie."

"I don't have it," she lied. "Max tried to kill me. He chased me through the woods, but I lost him. I ended up here, he drove away. So why don't you ask Max where the money is?"

"Can't find Max," he said following after her. She needed something to throw at him. "All we've found is you. And we all know how smart you are Charlie."

Of course they knew that, she had planned the whole heist all the way down to every single detail. He was right to figure that she would have had gotten away from Max even if he had gotten the upper hand originally.

"I already told you… I don't have the money."

She then grabbed a box of cereal and chucked it at him. He swatted it away but that didn't matter, she got on the other side of the display and tipped it over onto him.

Once it crashed into him, trapping him under she sprinted towards the door. She fumbled with the lock, got it open and then rushed out onto the street, screaming on the top of her lungs for Bo.

-HOW-

Bo had just managed to put his lunch into the fridge, he had his thermos filled with iced tea ready to drink, when the car pulled up outside of the garage.

Two men came out, both dressed rather similarly, one in black and one in blue. Average looking, nothing too spectacular. They both looked around the town before turning towards him.

One came to his shop the other walked off. Probably to go to the convenience store. Or maybe just to look around.

He smiled cooly at the man who came in. He was smaller than Bo, his blonde hair was properly coiffed back. He was in a blue polo and dark blue jeans and had this slimy sort of way of looking around. They didn't have a problem with their car, other then an overly loud muffler, because he hadn't had a chance to sabotage this car, but he'd probably be able to sell some gas before they leave.

"How can I help you?" he asked as the man approached his counter.

"I'm looking for someone who might have… moved here. Do you have anyone new in town?"

Uh… what? They only had one new person in town. But he didn't want to tell this man about Charlie. He got a bad feeling from him. Like he was there to take Charlie away. No one was going to take Charlie away from him.

"Other then you? No."

"You sure? She's blonde, green eyes…"

He was talking about Charlie. Why the hell were they looking for Charlie? Something didn't sit right with him.

"She's pretty annoying, chats all the time. Hard to miss her."

Charlie really did have a problem with shutting up, but it was one thing for him to say it, it was completely different hearing it from someone else. Hearing it from someone else made him angry.

"I think we'd notice a new girl in town," he said. "Sorry, but uh… you've got the wrong place. If you're not here to buy something I'd recommend picking up your friend and leaving."

BO!

That was Charlie.

He knew how Charlie said his name, but the way she said it… there was nothing but terror in her voice.

Bo turned to the man in front of him, who had also recognized the cry, and was heading towards door. Bo jumped the counter and slammed into the man. They struggled for a bit before Vincent got a hold of the man's head.

It took one violent twist and the neck snapped. But he was angry. Angry that this person had been after Charlie. It didn't occur to him to wonder if these were friends of hers, mainly because she was screaming in terror and he was filled with a violent desire to protect.

And since he was angry he didn't just drop the body, he just hurled it right through the window to his shop, just as Charlie came into view.

Charlie came to a stop just staring at it. She then turned to him with wide surprised eyes.

"You okay?" he asked as he climbed through the window to get to her.

"Yeah, is he dead?" she asked and then she shook her head. "Bo… Bo listen... there's another…" she was saying, but he was coming towards her. She looked panicked, all he wanted to do was hold her and tell her it was okay.

She was safe now, he had dealt with the problem

And then something collided with the back of his head. As he collapsed, as the darkness took over, all he could hear was the scuffle.

Another person's feet against the ground, going not for him but for Charlie.

And Charlie's little voice screaming for him getting farther and father away.

He had forgotten that there was another guy.

And now that man had Charlie.
