Let's do something different. Bilbo Baggins is not particularly ancient, or the lone member of a once great race of skin changers. He wasn't cursed, he's not on probation. He hasn't got a grudge to fulfil or a debt to repay. Bilbo is a completely ordinary dragon.

On his way to Bree, just before the fateful meeting with the Grey Wizard, Thorin gets ambushed and wounded on the road. While healing, he seeks shelter in the house of the local healer, a redheaded woman named Wren. Alison Ashburne just wished that someone had told her all of this before she was thrown on a quest with the Company of Thorin Oakenshield.

The shadows of the past and the call of a wizard. / Gandalf goes over Thorin's head and recruits a druid to join them on the quest for Erebor. It is unheard of for an omega of Bilbo's age to be living unmated, unmarried and alone. It is even more unheard of for an omega to go off adventuring with a hoard of dwarves, but that's exactly what Bilbo does. The gist being that Mahal and Yavanna, creators of the dwarves and Hobbits respectively, come to our world, tell a nerd, "hey, pack a bag because Middle Earth needs you. Save all the ones who die." And then drop her on bilbos doorstep at the start of the hobbit. Only they forgot to tell her that no one speaks english.
