Chapter 53

The shrill sound of an alarm blaring had both Kagome and Miroku shooting up in bed. They looked at each other, jumped out of bed,and ran to Yasu's room. The baby was inside his crib, crying because of the sudden loud noise, but otherwise he was safe. Kagome picked him up, trying to sooth him.

"Stay here." Miroku grabbed Kagome's chin, kissing her quickly before running to the hallway and shutting the door behind him. He had locked the door before he shut it, keeping them safe just in case. No one would be able to get in unless Kagome let them in.

Steps quick but light, he moved back to his room cautiously, his heart pounding in his chest. He grabbed his phone, sending an alert to his father, the closest one to him. The security system Touga had installed would alert everyone to a break in. Every house was connected, so it was possible Touga and the others already knew something was wrong.

Taking a deep breath, Miroku walked downstairs, keeping his eyes peeled for any sign of movement. There was none, just an eerie sense of being watched. When Miroku made it to the living room, he found the culprit for the alarm.

A rock that had been thrown through his window. It had a piece of paper tied to it, and Miroku bent down, picking it up. It had two words on it, but as always, they caused Miroku's stomach to clench in worry.

She's mine

Kouga was here once again, tormenting them. He had been quiet since the last letter he sent to Kagome, which was worrisome. Now he was throwing rocks through windows, most likely just to keep them on their toes. Face scrunched into annoyance, Miroku set the rock on the table, making his way to the keypad beside the door. Typing in the code, he cut off the alarm, the silence almost thick and suffocating.

His phone rang, causing him to jump. He was on edge, unsure of what was going on. Was this just Kouga messing with them, or was it something more? As it always was, Miroku had no idea. Answering the phone, he heard his father frantic on the other line.

"We are okay. Kouga threw a rock through the window." Miroku stood in front of the window, looking out into the darkness that was his yard and forest. Something didn't feel right, though he wasn't sure what it was.

"Is he there? What about Kagome and the baby?" The sound of a roaring engine told Miroku that Touga was on the way, and the feeling calmed Miroku. A second set of eyes would be beneficial at this moment. He doubted he would be going back to sleep anytime soon.

"I don't know. I don't see anyone, but there are plenty of places for him to hide. He also could have been in a car and left as soon as he threw the rock. As for Kagome, she and Yasu are locked in the nursery." Miroku rubbed his head, ready for all of this to be over. He was tired of Kouga's petty tricks and was ready to live a life without Kouga constantly there.

"I am still on my way. We can board up the window and make sure Kouga isn't there. Keep-"

A shrill scream followed by glass shattering had Miroku dropping his phone. He took off running up the stairs, slamming himself into the locked door. He could hear shuffling inside, hear Kagome yelling, and Yasu screaming, but he couldn't get the door to open.

Pure unfiltered terror formed in his gut, fear for his family forcing him to break through the door, ignoring the shooting pain that went through his arm when he did. Door shattered into pieces, Miroku spotted Kagome and Yasu immediately. Yasu had been pushed under his crib, as far as he could go.

Kagome had gotten Kouga to the opposite side of the room and was in a struggle against him. He had his hands around her throat, but she was fighting back, flailing with her legs and clawing with her nails. Miroku charged Kouga, tackling him to the ground.

The other man barely had time to register what happened before Miroku was on top of him, using his fist to beat on him. Another scream from Kagome had Miroku faltering, looking back to see her holding Yasu to her as two other men were dragging her out of the door. She bit the hand of one, drawing blood.

Kouga used Miroku's distraction to slam his own fist into the side of Miroku's head. Mind dazed and foggy, Kouga was able to get Miroku on his back, his hands around Miroku's throat. Kagome was still screaming, yelling for Miroku as best as she could.

Miroku could see Kagome being dragged away, and his own hands reached out, tightening around Kouga's throat. It was now a fight of sheer will. Who could hold on the longest? Miroku wouldn't give up. He had his family, far too much to live for to lose to someone like Kouga.

"Duck, Kagome!" Sesshomaru's voice rang around them, filling Miroku with a sense of relief. Sesshomaru was there, swinging a metal bat as soon as Kagome lowered her head. Kouga's two lacky's didn't have time to dodge, and the sound of metal cracking against their face was as satisfying as it was disturbing. The moment Ginta and Hakkaku fell back unconscious, Kagome began to make her way to Miroku.

Sesshomaru stopped her, running over towards Kouga. He wasn't fast enough this time though. Kouga dodged, letting go of Miroku, and jumping away from both brothers. Miroku coughed, taking in a much-needed breath of air as Sesshomaru stood over him.

Kouga had blood running down his face, dripping into his eyes. At that moment he looked more crazed than sane. "You should have never left me!" Kouga was looking between the brothers, straight to Kagome who was clutching Yasu to her. She had blood running down her chin from where she bit her attacker, scratches and bruising on her arms.

"What happened to you?" Kagome had wide eyes, looking at her ex-husband as if she had never seen him before. "You were always cruel, Kouga, but your mind is gone now."

Sesshomaru chuckled then, the sound dark. "He was beaten and raped while in prison." Sesshomaru smirked, his smile wicked. "Fitting, I thought. You got to feel exactly what it was you did to Kagome, and because of it, your mind broke. Kagome is far stronger than you ever have been."

"Shut the fuck up." Kouga glared murderously at Sesshomaru, and then turned back to Kagome. Slowly he pulled out a small gun from under his shirt, causing everyone to step back. "Make a choice Kagome. You come to me, or one of them dies." Kouga held up the gun, pointing it between Miroku and Sesshomaru.

"Don't move, Kagome." Both Miroku and Sesshomaru simultaneously said. Neither one of them were going to let her go anywhere.

"Think for yourself, pet. If they die, it will be your fault because you failed to choose correctly." Kouga grinned, white teeth contrasting to the blood that covered his face. He was no longer in his right mind, determined to do whatever it took to get Kagome back.

"You won't take her." Miroku took a step forward, and Kouga aimed his gun out the window, firing a warning. Kagome closed her eyes tightly as Yasu screamed in fear.

"Can you shut that bastard up?" Kouga covered his ears dramatically, yelling in frustration at the baby crying. "This is why I beat that baby out of you. How anyone could want to listen to this is beyond me. They say I'm crazy." Lowering his hands, Kouga once again pointed the gun at Sesshomaru, but looked at Miroku. "Make a choice Kagome."

Kagome stepped forward, tears streaming down her face. Miroku shook his head, warning her not to move. "Kagome. You aren't going anywhere." She ignored him, walking up to him, and placing Yasu into his arms. Miroku grabbed her with his free hand, holding her arm so tightly, she couldn't escape. "You're not going anywhere. I won't let you."

"Don't you think she should choose?" Kouga chuckled, rolling his head on his shoulders. "Fine then. Now bodies start to drop." Kouga pulled the trigger, aiming his gun at Sesshomaru. Kagome screamed, being pulled away by Miroku.

It was like slow motion, the bullet heading straight for Sesshomaru, no one able to do anything to stop it. Just before it reached him, a body slammed into Sesshomaru, pushing him out of the way and taking the bullet in its side. Touga fell to the ground, blood pooling underneath him.

"Touga!" Kagome ran to him, pressing her hands over the wound to try and stop the bleeding. She was sobbing, tears dripping from her face in steady streams.

Kouga chose that chance to run, and Miroku handed Yasu to Sesshomaru, telling him to guard everyone. He wasn't going to let Kouga get away this time. Too many people had been killed and hurt, all because one deranged man couldn't let go of a woman who didn't want him.

Catching up to Kouga, Miroku slammed him into the wall so hard the plaster cracked behind him. Kouga lashed out, the two fighting each other with everything they had. Miroku refused to let Kouga escape, wanting to either get him restrained or knocked unconscious. Kouga needed to get free so he could think of another plan that would get Kagome to come his way.

"You should have never fucked her!" Kouga lifted a knee, connecting with Miroku's groin. Miroku grunted but fought through the pain that had his stomach rolling. He couldn't let Kouga escape.

"She is my wife. I'll fuck her as much as I want to." Miroku used his elbow to smash Kouga's nose to bits. Blood sprayed over the floor and wall, each of them receiving their own injuries. "You should have left us alone. You won't get away, Kouga. You're going to go back to prison and spend the rest of your life there. Someone will make you their bitch and while you get fuck by him, I'll be fucking Kagome."

Kouga roared in anger, the fighting intensifying between the two of them. Their fight continued to get pushed back, neither noticing they were getting farther away from the nursery, and closer to the stairs. It wasn't until Kouga took a step down, losing his footing that they realized their mistake.

Kouga tumbled first, pulling Miroku with him. Both rolled down the stairs painfully, landing in a heap at the bottom. Miroku groaned, every part of his body aching as he rolled to his stomach and then pushed himself up to his hands and knees.

The broken front door burst open, InuYasha running in with three cops behind him. "Holy fuck." His eyes were wide, glued to something beside Miroku. Miroku looked, jumping away as he saw Kouga laying there. His eyes were open, but there was no longer any life in them, his neck twisted at an odd angel. Kouga was dead. He would no longer be able to threaten them. It was finally over.

The End.
