"A child from the sky will come."
"A gift from the gods. It is the Amazon's duty to raise the child until the day comes, when they must go forth into the world of man and usher in a new era of truth, hope, and justice."
Penelope's words were still ringing in Hippolyta's ears as she rode back to the palace. She couldn't make sense of the oracle's prophecy. What were the gods planning? As queen, what was she going to do?
Absently she lifted a hand from the horse's reins and laid it upon her stomach. In a few months' time, she would have to stop appearing in public, so the others don't find out. Was this what the prophecy was about?
A child...
Hippolyta shook her head and grabbed the reins with both hands again. She wouldn't about that right now. The day of the prophecy will come eventually, but until then Hippolyta will make sure that Themyscira was prepared for anything the gods might throw at them.
8 months later
A muffled scream could be heard around the room. The only Amazons in there to hear were Phillipus and Althea. They are also the only two Amazons to know the queen's biggest secret. One that she has been keeping for 9 months and won't be able to hide any longer.
"Just a little more my queen, a few more pushes and it's over" the physician Althea said as she sat between the queen's legs prepared to finish delivering this baby.
Hippolyta couldn't answer her with the rag in her mouth that Phillipus had shoved in there after the first scream was ripped from their queen's mouth. Phillipus wiped sweat from Hippolyta's brow and gave her words of encouragement.
"The Amazon queen is stronger than this. You will be fine and so will the child. Now push!"
Across the island, sitting on a cliff overlooking the water was Elpis and her wife Metrodora. They were both farmers and were relaxing after a long day of sowing their fields.
The peace and tranquility of the moment was interrupted when Elpis noticed an object crashing from the sky. There was smoke trailing after it, and it looked to be falling in a fast descent towards the beach in front of the two women.
"What is that?" Metrodora practically screamed. The two Amazons stood up and watched as the object crashed onto the shore. They looked at each other and without even speaking both started running down towards the fallen object.
As they approached the object its shiny surface reflected the sun and nearly blinded them. Elpis motioned for her wife to stay put as she slowly crept closer to the foreign object.
She noticed that the top of the object was made of glass, and she could see into it. As she peered down, she saw something that she hasn't seen since the Amazon's left Man's World and went into seclusion.
It was a baby. The child was awake and looking back up at her with curious blue eyes.
Elpis cautiously laid a hand upon the glass surface. The glass spilt open at the contact and Elpis quickly drew her hand back in shock. The dark-haired child continued to stare up at her with fascination.
"Is that a baby?" Metrodora's voice sounded right next to Elpis' ear which caused her to jump.
"Dora, I told you to stay back. We don't know what this is and where it came from."
Metrodora rolled her eyes at her wife and looked at the baby again. She reached inside of the object and retrieved the child. Elpis watched for any signs of danger. When none came, she too looked at the baby in her wife's arms. She had to admit that Metrodora seemed like a natural at holding the infant. But then she remembered something.
"We must check it. Is it a girl… or a boy?"
Metrodora nodded and unwrapped the child from the red cloth it was swaddled in. Both women gasped when they realized that the child is a male.
"We must tell the queen." Elpis said.
"What will happen to this child?" Metrodora questioned.
"I'm not sure."
"...I want to keep it."
Elpis looked at her shock.
"It's not a plaything that we can just take in as our own!"
"I know that Elpis, I want to raise this child. Would you be questioning my decision if this child were a girl?"
Elpis sighed and ran a hand through her hair. She stared at her wife holding the child from the sky and she knew that this was one battle that she was not going to win.
Back in the queen's chambers Hippolyta was sitting up cradling another dark-haired blue-eyed child. This one was, thankfully, a girl.
Althea was cleaning up while Phillipus looked down at the child in the queen's hands.
"What will you name the princess? This gift from the gods." Phillips asked.
Hippolyta smiled down at her baby and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead before answering.
"Diana."
So, this is actually my first ever fanfiction story! Woo hoo! I came up with this idea and decided to write it because I couldn't get it out of my head. After I wrote this I noticed that there is a story on here called Heroes of Themyscira by Celgress that has the same premise, so I definitely recommend going and checking that story out as well!
Thanks,
G
