To Your Own Crypt
As they headed back toward their camp, Elsie squeezed Hunter from behind him on their Sparrow. "Thank you. I doubt I'd have been able to do that without you there. I have Ana back now because of you."
"You have Ana back now because of you," Hunter corrected her. "And now, we only have one other place I don't want to go."
Elsie nodded. "The data all said there was something specific there, something of ours, yours and mine, but it didn't say what."
Hunter nodded. "We'll find it. Is Ana joining us?"
"I can ask," Elsie nodded.
Hunter slowed to a stop outside Elsie's camp, and she went inside to send the message as Hunter sat outside, beginning to experiment with Darkness, quickly finding it combined with Void easily, but was impossible to combine with Solar. After a few minutes, Elsie returned, sitting beside him as he focused, SIVA flowing from his hands to form a Pulse Rifle, as he used to prefer before becoming a Guardian. The rifle was black with red highlights, black diamond-shaped plates along the sides, red wires running out from under them toward the barrel with small, black, diamond-shaped power amplifiers along the wire bundles, four per bundle, and openings through the grip to reduce the weight and help make the rifle kick in a straighter line backward, rather than rising from the balance being in back. On the left side, however, on the rear-most shell plate, rested a crimson Spade, and opposite it, a crimson Joker.
"Most impressive," Elsie nodded. "What type of ammunition? Energy?"
"I considered it, but I decided on my SIVA being the ammo," Hunter said. "It'll shoot clusters of them as bullets, then they'll swarm whatever they hit."
"And the power amplifiers?" Elsie asked.
"Energizes the rounds and makes them more accurate," Hunter said. "I learned pretty much everything about guns from Cayde making me tune and upgrade my own, except my Hand Cannons. One was a gift, and the other was his."
Elsie nodded. "I'm sorry. I know what it's like to lose a father."
Hunter nodded, just as Ana appeared beside them. "Ready?"
Ana nodded, and she and Hunter summoned their Sparrows. Elsie climbed on with Hunter, and he sped off, following her directions. However, as he drove, he received a message.
"Atraks, the last of Eramis' council, has found the Deep Stone Crypt!" Variks said urgently. "House Salvation survivors are gathering there!"
"Oh no," Elsie breathed. "We need to go. We need to stop her!"
"Stop her from what?" Hunter asked.
"There's a nuclear satellite over Europa that can be crashed into Europa to destroy it from the Crypt!" Elsie warned. "And the Crypt is the prison of something else. Something sinister!"
"What is it?" Hunter asked.
"Taniks," Eramis said. "The Fallen who killed Cayd-6's predecessor. Taniks' body was non-functional after the last time he faced the Guardians, but there's technology there that could revive him, ignoring turning him into an Exo."
Hunter narrowed his eyes, nodding. "Then we'll kill both of them. Permanently."
Eramis nodded, and Hunter sped up, streaking across Europa according to Elsie's instructions, Ana hot on his tail. Finally, they all leapt off of their Sparrows at the entrance, just in time for a pair of Fallen Captains and a group of cloaked Vandals to charge them, only for Hunter to hurl a SIVA Grenade. As it exploded, it killed all of the Vandals before the SIVA drones it released swarmed the two Captains and burrowed into them before also exploding. No one commented on the grenade's effects or effectiveness. Instead, they sprinted to the tunnel leading toward the path to the Crypt, exiting it into a vehicle bay of sorts, shielded from the eternal blizzard around it by a heat bubble. A group of Pikes sat around them, but Hunter merely summoned his Sparrow again, Elsie taking the controls this time. Ana likewise chose a Sparrow over the Pikes, opting for speed over attached weaponry, and when the Hero of the Red War, the Drifter, and Shiro-4 all ran into the vehicle bay a few seconds later, they all did the same.
"I brought help," Shiro said. "What are we up against?"
"A Fallen Archon, possibly with Stasis, and possibly trying to revive Taniks," Hunter said, climbing up behind Elsie and drawing the Joker in his right hand, as it had the superior range of his two one-handed weapons. "Also, there's a nuclear satellite above Europa that the Fallen Archon might drop from the Deep Stone Crypt that will destroy Europa if not stopped."
"So, nothing major," Shiro said sarcastically.
"We need to move," Elsie said. "I know the path. Try to keep up."
Everyone nodded and she shot out of the heat bubble, following a winding, broken up path along a cliff. However, within inches, a Web Mine burst up in front of them, only for Hunter to shoot it, instantly focusing and using his SIVA to replace the bullet, instantly realizing he'd need more than the Hand Gun could hold. Sure enough, a Web Mine popped up seemingly every ten feet, Hunter shooting any he could, but ice was beginning to gather on his body, his gun, even the Sparrow. He could feel himself starting to shut down. Then, Elsie clenched the brake in time for them to skid to a stop inside another heat bubble, surrounded by Fallen.
Hunter was off like a shot, drawing his second Hand Cannon and emptying both before swapping hands to reload, forming new, fully-loaded cylinders from his SIVA. As he reloaded, he bent forward, a half-dozen SIVA tentacles flashing out and stabbing several Vandals and a Captain before retracting. Elsie opened fire with her Pulse Rifle at the same time just as Shiro leapt off his Sparrow at full speed, allowing it to plow through a group of Dregs before stabbing a knife into a Vandal's head as he opened fire on another group of Dregs with a highly-customized sidearm. At almost the exact same moment he appeared, the Hero and Drifter both made similar appearances, the Hero letting his Sparrow bounce and roll sideways into a line of Fallen before his Submachine Gun buzzed to life, and the Drifter landing his Sparrow on top of a Dreg before firing a Scout Rifle Hunter had always seen him carry but never use rapidly with one hand and the Hand Cannon he'd seen before with the other. Ana arrived last, her arrival announced by her Sparrow slamming into an Archon's head at a high enough speed to remove it before she dropped into the Heat Bubble with her Scout Rifle already firing. Within seconds, they'd cleared Fallen and Hunter refilled his Hand Cannons' current cylinders with his SIVA before climbing back onto his Sparrow with Elsie. The three whose Sparrows were outside the bubble summoned them back to themselves, and they all waited a few seconds for the ice to melt off before they took off again, Hunter once again clearing the Web Mines as they sped along, Elsie steering.
After close to another minute just as the cold was in danger of killing them all again, they reached the next bubble, once again, all of them jumping off their Sparrows and tearing into Fallen, this time with Hunter using the Joker and his knives. Once again, they'd cleared the bubble within seconds and all summoned their Sparrows again, any that had left the bubble thawing before they all climbed on.
"I'm going to have to do so much tuning up to fix this thing," Hunter sighed.
"I thought you love tuning that thing," Drifter said.
"Tuning, yes," Hunter nodded. "Swapping out entire sections of the engine, no."
Drifter chuckled. "Long as we make it to the Crypt, I don't mind mine falling apart."
Hunter rolled his eyes, wrapping his arm around Elsie. "Let's go."
Elsie nodded and they took off again, This trip was shorter, and lacked Web Mines, but there were a lot more Fallen waiting. So, Hunter leapt off of the Sparrow early, forming a Shadowshot, only for Stasis to encase the arrow. Then, when he fired, every Fallen inside the bubble was instantly frozen, a Void tether connecting them all to the singularity the Shadowshot had formed. Within a second, all of the frozen fallen cracked, then exploded, the chunks of frozen alien turning into shrapnel that slaughtered the rest of the Fallen. As everyone landed in the bubble, Drifter cheered.
"Nice one!" Drifter grinned. "Where'd your learn to do that?"
"The same way all Hunters learn," Hunter said. "Dicking around in the woods."
Drifter, Elsie, and Shiro laughed, Ana put her hands on her hips, and the Hero cleared his throat.
"Don't we have more important things to do?" the Hero asked.
"Well aren't you just a fucking ball of sunshine," Hunter grumbled, climbing onto his Sparrow again behind Elsie.
Then, they were off yet again. For a ways, they were mostly on top of the glacier with the ice being mostly flat. However, about halfway, they reached the end of a huge crevasse and Elsie gunned it, streaking off the edge onto a small ledge, then from that one to a small space between two massive walls of ice. That narrow path eventually ended, and they passed over three more ice pillars before entering the bubble and plowing into a Captain, killing it instantly before going to work on the other Fallen. Ana reached them next, then the Hero, then the Drifter. By the time Shiro arrived, frozen solid, they'd finished the Fallen. The heat bubble thawed out Shiro's body, and everyone's Ghosts worked together to revive him. As he sat up, he shivered once before growling in annoyance.
"I hate this place," he said.
"Just wait," Hunter said. "It'll get worse."
He summoned his Sparrow back to them, as did the others, and they all left again. They passed over several more broken pieces of ice before reaching a slope back up to the top, just in time to hit a small chunk of ice like a ramp and jump into the bubble. This one, however, was empty. Hunter frowned, looking around, until the others had all arrived.
"Gift horses, Hunter," Ana said.
"Right," Hunter nodded. "Gift horses."
"There's only one more bubble between us and the Crypt," Elsie said. "But it's a long way, and the path is easy to lose."
"Stay close, got it," Ana nodded.
Elsie returned the nod and shot out of the bubble, the others all racing along just behind her. This time, their path was through a maze of pathways between ice pillars and cliffs like the bottom of a dangerously narrow canyon. As Hunter had expected the others all missed a turn somewhere along, but as Hunter and Elsie shot out of the maze and off a cliff, heading directly for the heat bubble and the two Brigs guarding it, the others also all shot out of a pathway. Instantly, Hunter hurled a pair of massive fans of Solar-charged Proximity Mine Daggers at the Brigs, Elsie hurled a Stasis Grenade, the Drifter hurled a spear of Stasis crystals, Shiro hurled a Swarm Grenade, Ana charged a Golden Gun and fired it six times, and the Hero fired his rocket launcher. In an instant, Ana's shots had each spawned a shining pool of Solar Energy per shot, which began to rapidly burn and heat the Brigs' metal anywhere it landed, Hunter's daggers exploded and blew massive sections of their plating off, Elsie and Drifter's Stasis grenades each hit and froze a Brig solid, then the Hero's rocket blasted one Brig into shrapnel as Shiro's Swarm Grenade exploded and shattered the other before the drones it released swarmed down and exploded against more Fallen inside the bubble. Then, everyone landed inside the bubble, Hunter, Shiro, and Ana all hurling a fan of knives as a greeting, and all six opened fire, rapidly slaughtering the few Fallen that remained.
They all mounted up one last time, and a few seconds later, they reached the door announcing their imminent arrival at the Deep Stone Crypt. Inside the door was an ice tunnel, which led to a long stretch of blizzard-free canyon, but after a few minutes' travel on their Sparrows, they all walked through the door into the Crypt itself. Hunter instantly glared around at everything. He hated this place. It was where he had found out Elsie was dying, where he'd risked death to become an Exo, where he'd had to watch her risk death to do the same, where he found out his SIVA were unstable and would eventually go out of control without treatments, and where Clovis Bray had told him that he'd been sabotaging the treatments for an excuse to get him away from Elsie. This place was a stain on his memory, and he wished he could destroy it.
"Come on," Hunter growled. "They'll have to be deeper in, but first we'll have to pass through Security. And since we're not seeing dead Fallen, we'll have to reset security, manually."
"How?" Drifter asked.
"We need to overload multiple fuses until it shuts down to reboot itself," Elsie said. "The fuses are huge, though, so we'll be shooting them."
"Sounds like fun," Shiro grinned.
"Elsie and I will be shooting them," Hunter said. "You guys will be keeping the Fallen busy and directing us."
"Directing you?" the Hero asked.
They all stopped as they entered a room with multiple raised platforms and pillars, two of the pillars surrounded by clear floor, and a machine with a small device sitting in it. Hunter walked over to the device and rested a hand on it, his SIVA shivering in a wave up his arm to his head before stopping as he recreated the device's signal, allowing him to bypass the barriers protecting the fuses in the Crypt. Elsie also copied the device's signal just before Fallen began to enter. They all shot them quickly, and several Vandals dropped similar devices. Hunter and Elsie both copied those devices signals as well before passing them off. Shiro and Ana stared at the odd devices, which had a lense for them to look through.
"You're going to be using those to see which fuses glow," Hunter said, flinging a knife behind himself into a Dreg. "Elsie and I will then go and shoot them. Ana, you and Elsie go through that door," he pointed at a door with a darkened room on the other side, "and deal with the fuses over there. Hero, go with them as protection."
All three nodded.
"Shiro, you're spotting for me while helping Drifter with the Fallen," Hunter said. "We're on a very short timeclock for the fuses, be quick."
Everyone nodded, and Hunter and Elsie ran to the door then down to the basement where the fuses were. On Elsie's side, she'd been directed to the fuses in seconds, while on Hunter's side, Shiro and Drifter took a few seconds longer, having more difficulty with the Fallen, but finally managed to direct him to the correct fuses. As soon as he'd shot them, several power couplings on both sides were uncovered, and Hunter and Elsie ordered the others to destroy them as they ran back up the stairs. By the time they were back up stairs, the others were just destroying the last of the couplings.
"Core power systems compromised," a slightly distorted recording of Clovis' voice said. "Initiating emergency backup systems. Crypt status, active. Orbital status, standby."
"Shit!" Hunter swore. "They've already brought the satellite online!"
"I thought you said we were rebooting the security!" Shiro said.
"We are," Elsie said. "Emergency systems take over in the mean time, and it also locks out remote access to the satellite. They'll have to go to the satellite themselves now to drop it, and they can't set a delay."
"That should stall them," Drifter said.
"Not Taniks," Hunter said. "He'd drop it anyway out of spite for humanity and the Guardians."
"And then he'll unleash a terrible vengeance on all Guardians," Elsie said, looking to Hunter and Ana meaningfully. "We have to stop him from being released."
Both nodded as they ran through a door out of security and deeper into the Crypt.
"Humanoid lifeforms detected, approaching Clarity Control," the automated systems announced. "Exo lifeforms present. Welcome home."
Hunter shot a speaker. "Fuck you and your 'home' Clovis."
"Threat determined, Crypt compromised," the voice said. "Nuclear descent protocol recommended."
"Hunter!" Ana, Drifter, and Shiro all groaned.
"It wasn't him," Elsie said. "Shooting a speaker, or resetting security, wouldn't cause a recommendation for Nuclear descent."
They all jumped down a slanted elevator shaft, landing on the sloped side and either skidding or running down it before jumping to a door on the right, following Elsie and Hunter through it.
"Clarity Control breached," the voice announced as they all entered a massive, dark room with a huge pit swallowed by shadows before them and a walkway to their left, which they took. "A single unregistered Exo and a single lifeform of unknown biology detected in the Crypt laboratory."
"Taniks," Hunter growled. "He's awake."
"And the Exo?" Ana asked.
Hunter frowned. "I don't know."
"Status, disastrous," the announcement warned. "Notice, vacate the premises immediately."
They all turned along the walkway at a sprint, now descending into the pit along the left wall. Once at the bottom, they passed a massive statue that Hunter ignored completely and headed for an illuminated door ahead of them. The door opened to a short hallway before that opened into a laboratory separated from them by a wall of thick glass. Standing opposite it from them was a white and black Exo in the shape of an Eliksni.
"Atraks!" Hunter growled. "What have you done?"
"Be careful," Spark warned. "I'm reading numerous systems in her body that you don't have. I don't know what they do."
"I have been reborn!" Atraks said in a heavily distorted, synthetic voice, then turned, speaking in her native language, Hunter assumed, to some kind of pod behind her.
A moment later, it opened and Taniks stepped out, looking at the Guardians before instantly roaring in rage. He leapt forward to the glass, slamming a mechanical arm into the glass three times, managing to crater the glass but not breaking through. He roared in rage again before looking around, then up. He jumped, scrambling up the glass and giving them a chance to see his almost completely machine body before disappearing into a vent above. Atraks shouted something before bursting into a cloud of purple sparks.
"We're too late," Shiro said.
"Not yet," Hunter said. "We can still kill them both."
"Agreed," Elsie nodded. "We have to."
They turned, leading the others through a door to the left, into a room lit by red lights, then through it to a multi-level room with a white and black floor. As they approached the next door, however, Atraks appeared in front of them with an Arc Rifle, batting both of them aside before opening fore on the others. Hunter grabbed his Hand Cannons instantly, but when he shot Atraks, the bullets bounced off. Then, several more Atraks all opened fire as well. Hunter swore, activating the two new upgrades he'd gotten from the security room as he swapped his Hand Cannons for his SIVA Pulse Rifle. He felt both augmentations come online, but when he shot Atraks, the result was the same. Then, Fallen were swarming him, and he took off at a sprint, blasting them all rapidly, the SIVA in the gun itself automatically replacing the bullets the gun fired without him having to control them. As he fought, however, there wasn't one Atraks. There were four. She'd cloned herself.
"Sector reassessment," the automated systems announced. "Orbital platform active."
Hunter swore harshly. Taniks.
"Orbital platform breached," the automated systems announced. "Status, calamitous."
"She's up top, too!?" the Hero shouted.
"Hero, Shiro, Elsie, go!" Hunter snapped.
All three nodded, Elsie leading them to a set of elevator pods expressly for getting to and from the satellite.
As they left, the remaining three went to work on the Fallen swarming them, Ana using her Golden Gun to spread pools of burning Solar Energy around the room, Drifter and Hunter both sending massive storms of Stasis Energy raging around the room, and all three slaughtering Fallen with their guns, Drifter using his Hand Cannon this time. Every few seconds, Hunter hurled a SIVA grenade at random, allowing his SIVA to help mow down the Fallen almost as fast as his Stasis storm. After a few minutes, three extra-large Servitors appeared, all three of the Guardians targeting one of them. A few moments later, all three exploded. Almost instantly, the four Atraks around them raised their hands, a mass of shining white energy flying off of them and building above them.
"What are they doing!?" Ana shouted, though all three knew what.
It was an attack, and one that would probably kill them all. Hunter looked around desperately before noticing something. One of the Atraks was glowing gold in his eyes.
"It's protective shielding is down!" Spark told him instantly.
"That one!" Hunter shouted, forming a Golden Gun and opening fire.
The Drifter and Ana both followed suit, also using Golden Guns, and the Atraks exploded into scrap, a violet orb falling to the ground. Except, the other Atraks clones all remained. The purple orb began to grow, a silhouette of Atraks' upper body flashing into view over it before vanishing again.
"It's replicating her body!" Spark warned.
Drifter snatched it up instantly, Stasis crystals appearing around it instantly, only for cracks to begin to form.
"It won't hold!" Spark warned. "Forty five seconds!"
"Airlock!" Hunter shouted, also making sure to radio the instruction to Elsie. "Get to the satellite!"
Drifter sprinted for the elevator pods instantly, Hunter and Ana clearing the Fallen out of his way before Hunter fired a special SIVA round into one of the control panels beside one, the drones corrupting and hacking into the panel, allowing him to control that pod with a thought. He summoned it back down, and Drifter dove inside, Hunter sending him hurtling upward as he and Ana focused on the Fallen again. After about a minute, Drifter returned, just in time for the remaining three Atraks to begin charging their attack again. Hunter again looked around, saw a glowing Atraks, and formed a Golden Gun, the other two once again following his lead. When Atraks exploded again, Ana was closest, so Hunter sent a spike of Stasis Energy into the purple sphere, freezing it for her before she took off at a sprint for the elevator Drifter had returned with. As she returned a minute later, more Servitors appeared. They once again each targeted one, killing all three before Hunter looked between the last two Atraks. He formed a Rocket Launcher from his SIVA, as his Solar Energy was still recharging from being used for two Golden Guns back to back, and fired it into the glowing Atraks, two other rockets blasting the clone at the same time. This time, however, as Drifter ran the frozen sphere to the pods, the other Atraks roared and vanished.
"Hunter!" Elsie radioed, panicked. "We need you all up here!"
Hunter and Ana both sprinted for the pods, Hunter summoning two using his SIVA-hacked panel, and they both hurled themselves into them, rocketing upward. As they reached the satellite, they found eight Atraks clones present.
"This bitch doesn't quit!" Hunter growled.
Four of the eight began to charge an attack, and Hunter, Drifter, and Ana all fired their Rocket Launchers into one, which Elsie identified for them with a single burst from her rifle, and the Atraks exploded, Shiro grabbing the sphere and sprinting for the airlock, Elsie just behind him, though Hunter ignored that as the other four began to charge an attack. He and the Hero both fired their Rocket Launchers and Ana grabbed the sphere as the Hero froze it for her. As she sprinted for Elsie, all six of the remaining Atraks began to charge their attacks, Hunter seeing two glowing.
"Second from the Left!" Hunter shouted, targeting the other Atraks as the Hero blasted his assigned target.
Both exploded, and the Hero and Shiro both grabbed one, sprinting for Elsie as the Drifter and Ana returned. However, as Elsie jettisoned the Replication Spheres, all but one of the remaining Atraks burst into purple sparks and faded. The remaining one roared in rage, aiming at Hunter as he charged, only for him to leap over her gunfire. He pulled his arms back over his head, SIVA swarming to his palms and racing outward, rapidly forming a sword. It had a long grip just backward from centered, a long, purple, rectangular, circuit board-like blade, four small exhaust pipe-like objects from the back of the blade, a metal clamp-like piece on the back, about the middle of the blade, bolted on at a total of twelve places, small saw teeth along the edge, a sharpened spike on the top corner in front, and a tiny jet thruster on the top corner of the back. Then, as he slashed downward with the sword during his descent, the thruster shrieked to life, sending the blade hurtling downward, splitting Atraks in half down the center. Her halves fell to the ground, sparking and with Radiolaria flooding out of them, but Hunter ignored it, stepping back to avoid the Radiolaria as he stared at his newest weapon.
"The Lament," Elsie said. "It's been a long time since I've seen that blade."
"It's not the real one," Hunter said.
"It's close enough," Elsie said.
"Alert," the same automated systems voice as in the Crypt said suddenly. "Multiple hostile intruders detected within the orbital platform."
"Oh, just now, huh?" Hunter growled, placing the sword against his back and forming a magnet to hold it there as he grabbed his Pulse Rifle again.
"Orbital Confinement protocol initiating," the automated system announced, Hunter groaning. Status, pathway to nuclear cores obscured. You have no warnings left."
"What the fuck did you just say to me?" Hunter snapped.
"Nuclear descent protocols initiated," the automated systems said, sounding almost cheerful.
"This way," Hunter growled, running for a door out of the room, the others just behind him.
"How long do we have?" Drifter asked.
"Minutes," Elsie said.
Fallen began to swarm them from further along the hallway, only to all die in a hail of gunfire. Hunter climbed the stairs to his right and turned left again, heading for the door at the end of the hallway, an airlock to let them outside the station so they could head for Nuclear Core Control the hard way.
"Artificial Intelligence activated," the automated systems announced.
"Oh lovely," Hunter growled. "This fucking guy."
"Enjoying yourselves, intruders?" the AI asked, also in Clovis Bray's voice. "It's worth knowing the cataclysmic damage you will be responsible for today."
"Liked the sound of his own voice, huh?" Ana asked as they leapt from one maintenance platform to the next.
"Shut down the nuclear decent protocol!" Elsie ordered. "I'm Elisabeth Bray, and this is Anastasia Bray!"
"Do not fool yourselves," the AI said. "This facility is not simply the fruitless work of some pathetic scientist. This house was built by the genius Clovis Bray I himself."
Hunter made a gagging noise. "Ego!"
"Within lies humanity's salvation," the AI continued, ignoring Hunter just as it had ignored Elsie. "La fontaine de jouvence."
"I've had enough 'Salvation' for one day, thank you!" Hunter snarled.
"It's all made possible by Clarity Control," the AI continued. "Magnificent, wasn't it? A being from beyond our own dimension. And the answer to humanity's eternal struggle, mortality."
Hunter rolled his eyes. He had forgotten about that thing. The statue he'd ignored in the Clarity Control room was, in fact, Clarity Control itself, or so Clovis had named it. It had taken the same form as the precursor statues on the Moon, but it hovered on its own, the end of its cloak swirled in slow motion, its chest moved with its breaths, and it radiated pure Darkness Energy, which was the true form of what Clovis had called Clarity. Whatever the thing was, it had also slaughtered the first five teams Clovis had sent to move it to the Crypt.
"Were it to fall into the wrong hands, humanity, and the universe, would be utterly doomed," the AI continued as Fallen appeared on a platform ahead, Hunter and the others slaughtering them without slowing down. "I have no reason to believe you are anything other than 'the wrong hands.'"
"How about two Brays and an Exo created here!" Hunter snapped, slashing a Fallen Captain down the front with a melee dagger at the same time as landing on the platform he was on.
"You now face godlike judgement," the AI said as Hunter and the others obliterated a small swarm of Shanks. "May it extend eternally."
"Fuck you and your judgement!" Hunter spat. "Egotistical, self-righteous mother fucker!"
A pair of Captains with Scorch Cannons stepped into view on a platform ahead of them all, and Hunter sent a Shadowshot into one's chest, killing it with the singularity before the tether yanked the second into it. A moment later, the singularity shrunk out of existence, leaving nothing behind of the two Captains.
"You're good," Ana said.
"Of course he is," Shiro said. "He's Cayde's chosen successor."
"Wait, Cayde chose a successor?" Ana asked. "Did you refuse?"
"Zavala and Ikora refused and appointed Shiro instead," Hunter said. "Because I'm SIVA. It's fine. I have no intention of joining the Vanguard."
Finally, after a long string of jumps between very thin catwalks, they reached an open hangar with a pair of Brigs and a dozen Fallen inside. Hunter formed a Golden Gun instantly, shooting the Brigs three times each and causing them to explode before the six of them had even entered the hangar. As soon as they did, they slaughtered the Fallen inside and headed for the door back into the satellite. Just inside, they turned left into a purple-lit corridor that had lights along the walls like circuit boards. They turned left at a four-way intersection, then right at the next. The corridor opened into a large open room, and they crossed to the far end quickly, following a walkway there toward the control room. Then, they stopped at the door into the control room, staring at the raised platform where the controls for the satellite and its descent protocol were. There, standing with his back to them, was Taniks.
