Chapter 7

The next three days could only be described as hell for Kendra. Jasper was showing no signs of getting better, and there was still nothing that could be done to help him. Kendra thought she might go insane if they didn't figure something out, and soon. When she wasn't at Jasper's side, she was with Monty, lending some encouragement as he tried to use wristbands to get communication with the Ark. Octavia spent quite a bit of time with them as well, and the more Kendra got to know the younger Blake sibling, the more she decided they would be good friends. Her relationship with the older Blake sibling, however, was as bad as ever. The civil and maybe even friendly conversation they'd had that night was forgotten as they fought more than ever. Maybe it was the fact that Kendra was more stressed than she ever had been or maybe it was the fact that Bellamy was having to deal with several issues and complaints about the dying boy in the dropship, but they were at each other's throats at least once a day. Neither one could deny, though, that after their screaming matches, they felt a little better and able to deal with their respective situations.

All of these factors from the last three days were just piling up and Kendra just knew that if there was no change within the next day, she would lose it. She said so to Clarke on the morning of day four, and Clarke had agreed with her. So they found themselves with Monty and Finn keeping them company as Clarke removed the poultice from Jasper's wound.

"They cauterized his wound, saved his life." Clarke was saying.

Finn retorted, "Saved his life so they could string him up as live bait. Garden of Eden this ain't."

Clarke continued examining the various wounds, "This is infected, he could be septic."

Kendra stiffened, "What does that mean for him?"

Clarke ignored her, turning to Monty, "Any progress on using the wristbands to contact the Ark?"

Monty was just staring at Jasper, seemingly lost in his thoughts, fear for his best friend's life written on his face. Clarke tried getting his attention again, raising her voice, "Monty!"

Kendra refrained from snapping at Clarke to back off, knowing that she was just worried and wanted her mom's advice on what to do.

Monty shook himself out of his stupor, "That would be a firm no."

Kendra sucked in a breath and looked towards the ceiling, and Clarke looked lost, "My mother would know what to do."

At that moment, Kendra heard Wells' voice, "How's he doing?"

She bit back a sassy response, but smiled to herself as Clarke snapped, "How does he look like he's doing, Wells?"

"Hey, I'm just trying to help." Kendra rolled her eyes at that. Of course he is.

There was a pause before Clarke broke the silence, "Alright, you want to help? Hold him down."

Kendra looked at Clarke with wide eyes, "What are you planning, Clarke?"

Clarke said nothing as Wells grabbed Jasper's legs and Finn did the same with his arms, and Clarke grabbed a knife and stuck it into a small fire. Kendra gulped and Monty just stared, "I'm not going to like this, am I?"

Kendra was already positioned at his head, so she moved a bit closer, so his head was resting in her lap. Monty moved closer too, grabbing his feet. The two shared a look over their best friend's body, both knowing this would be hard, but worth it if he survived.

Clarke looked at everyone, before grabbing the knife from the fire, "Ready?"

Everyone nodded while Kendra whispered, "No."

Clarke took a deep breath before moving the knife to the skin around Jasper's wound. His groans turned into screams of pain as he started thrashing around.

"Hold him still! I need to cut away the infected flesh."

Kendra couldn't help the tears that slipped out as she held Jasper's head in her hands, whispering, "Shhh. Hey, you're okay. You're going to be okay."

A small sob escaped her as he fell silent, his head going a bit limp, with a single tear falling from one of his eyes. She shared another look with Monty, the fear and anguish obvious in both of their eyes.

Octavia suddenly burst into the room, "Stop! You're killing him."

Finn looked up, "She's trying to save his life."

"She can't." Kendra grit her teeth at Bellamy's voice. She couldn't deal with him right now, not like this.

The only time Kendra was grateful for Wells was when he stood up and told Bellamy to "back off."

Clarke kept her voice even as she said, "We didn't drag him through miles of woods just to let him die."

"Kid's a goner. If you can't see that, you're deluded. He's making people crazy."

Kendra fought to keep her own voice even as she growled out, "Oh, you're going to see crazy if you don't shut your mouth, Blake."

Clarke was obviously getting fed up as she snapped, "Sorry if Jasper is an inconvenience to you, but this isn't the Ark. Down here every life matters."

He looked down at them all, exasperated, "Take a look at him. He's a lost cause."

Kendra held back a sob at his words. There was a pregnant silence as everyone reflected on the situation. Kendra had to fight to not stand up and get out of there as fast as she could; she had to stay and hold him and hope for the best.

Clarke glanced up at her, "I have spent my whole life watching my mother heal people. If I say there's hope, there's hope."

Kendra nodded gratefully at her words but felt her fury about to take over as Bellamy spoke up again, "This isn't about hope, it's about guts. You don't have the guts to make the hard choices, but I do. He's been like this for three days. If he's not better by tomorrow, I'll kill him myself."

Kendra couldn't contain the fury anymore, and embracing her anger was better than feeling the despair creeping in, so she shot to her feet and leveled Bellamy with the fiercest expression he had seen yet, despite the obvious tear streaks down her cheeks.

"I'd like to see you try. I swear, Bellamy, if you lay even a single hand on him, you're going to see why I got locked up," her voice was deadly calm, but you could hear the simmering rage behind each word and everyone in that room knew her threat was all too real. Those who knew what it was she had done shared worried looks, all thinking the same thing. It would take a lot for her to go that far again, but she would do it in a heartbeat if it meant defending Jasper.

Bellamy gulped, but to his credit, he managed not to let his fear show on his face as he turned to descend the ladder, "Octavia, let's go."

Octavia didn't even look at him, "I'm staying here."

The room was silent as he left, Kendra remained on her feet with her hands clenched in tight fists. Monty was the first to break the silence.

"Power-hungry, self-serving jackass. He doesn't care about anyone but himself. No offense," he added for Octavia's sake. He was her brother after all. Poor girl.

Finn spoke up then, "Yeah, Bellamy is all that. But, he also happens to be right."

Kendra turned to him, "God, Finn. Just as I start to like you, you go and say that."

Everyone glanced at her warily, her hands were still tightly balled in fists and they could still hear the barely concealed rage in her voice. Monty knew her well enough to know that anger was her cover-up. She hated crying and she hated being sad, so she got mad instead. He knew that she needed to calm down, so when Finn went to respond, he silently shook his head – if he said something now, she would just blow up.

So, Monty stood up and grabbed one of her fists, opening it up to reveal crescent-shaped marks in her palms where her nails cut into her skin.

He sighed, "K, I think you need to get away from here for a bit."

She shook her head, "No, I need to be here with Jasper. People are getting fed up and he needs protection in case people-"

"Kenny, you have barely left his side in the last three days. You are losing your cool. I am only saying this because I love you, but you're kind of scaring me."

She sighed, long and hard, "I know, I know, I just can't bear the thought of leaving him. If I leave and something happens to him while I'm gone. I-I would never forgive myself."

Monty shook his head, "It is not your fault that he got hurt."

"I didn't say-"

"No, but I know you well enough to know you have been thinking that from the moment you found out what happened. And nothing is going to happen to him. Look, I heard Bellamy is organizing a hunting party. I know you don't want to be around him right now, but I think hunting would be a good way to keep your mind busy and maybe work out a little aggression and feelings?"

She looked up at him with a faint smile, "Yeah, hunting could be good for me. And if my hand slips and I 'accidentally' stab Bellamy, it was just a hunting accident, right?"

Monty gave a nervous laugh, "Um, no, don't do that."

She rolled her eyes, "It was a joke, M. I'm not going to stab him. But thank you for the idea. You're sure you will be okay here?"

He nodded and she took one last look at Jasper before descending the ladder.

There was a pause in the room before Octavia spoke up, "So, she wouldn't actually stab my brother, right?"

Monty, Clarke, and Wells all shared a look before Monty let out a nervous laugh, "No, of course not."

Octavia was not quite convinced. Now, she wanted to know what the fiery blonde had been locked up for after all. Surely, it couldn't be that bad…

oooooooooooo

Kendra stopped by some people she had met who had been making weapons, grabbing a knife and a spear, before heading over to where she saw Bellamy with what she presumed to be his hunting party. When he saw her approaching with a spear in her hands, he couldn't help the tinge of fear that shot through him – he had just threatened the life of her best friend after all. Kendra saw his hand tighten around the axe he held as she walked up and felt a small twinge of pride in knowing he was at least a tiny bit scared of her.

She rolled her eyes at him as she drew closer, "Calm down, I'm not here for you. I heard you're going hunting. I want to join."

She heard a few snickers from the other boys in the group and she glared at them, "What? Think I don't have what it takes?" And with that she grabbed the knife in the waistband of her jeans and threw it with deadly precision at the tree right next to the head of one of the boys. The snickers stopped.

She smirked as she turned to Bellamy with a single eyebrow raised in question. He huffed, "Fine, you can come."

They had walking for about half an hour when they spotted the boar. They began to approach when Bellamy whispered, "Shh, she's mine," while swinging his axe.

Kendra rolled her eyes, that cocky bast-

She was ripped out of her thoughts as his axe came straight for her, hitting the tree directly to the right of her head. She looked at him with wide eyes, "What the actual hell-"

She was cut off again as Bellamy strode over to the tree and she turned and noticed the young girl on the other side of the tree, looking terrified.

"Who the hell are you," came Bellamy's comforting question, not.

"Charlotte," the girl answered warily.

"I almost killed you," he said as he pulled his axe out of the tree, again very tactful in dealing with a scared young girl.

Kendra stepped forward, smiling at Charlotte, "I think what he means to say is sorry for almost taking your head off."

Charlotte smiled a bit at her, making Kendra's heart lift just a bit. Bellamy ignored her, "Why aren't you back at camp?"

Charlotte looked down, "Well, with that guy who was dying, I just- I couldn't listen anymore."

Kendra sucked in a breath at the mention of Jasper, she hated that everyone referred to him as the "guy who was dying," she wanted to scream at all of them and tell them that no he was not dying, he can't die, she won't let him die-

She was brought out of her thoughts again as Bellamy whispered, loud enough for only her to hear, "Hey. Get it together," looking at her with something resembling concern.

She gulped and nodded, turning back to Charlotte as she exclaimed, "I'm not little."

She had to smirk a little at the girl's attitude, she reminded her a bit of herself. Bellamy seemed to appreciate her bravery as well, "Okay then, but you can't hunt without a weapon," handing her a knife he pulled from his pocket.

Charlotte took it, glancing over at Kendra as she did so. Kendra smiled reassuringly at her as Bellamy spoke again, "Ever killed something before?"

Kendra looked at him shocked at his question as Charlotte shook her head to indicate that no, she, a girl no older than thirteen, had not killed anything before.

Bellamy smiled at her and said, "Who knows? Maybe you're good at it."

Charlotte smiled a bit at that, but Kendra looked at him in disbelief as he walked away. She followed close behind him, "Really? 'Maybe you're good at it?' That's what you went with?"

He rolled his eyes, and Charlotte heard him respond "Yes, that's what I went with and if you got a problem with…" his voice trailing off as they kept walking. She smiled to herself a bit at their bickering and followed them.

They caught up to the other half of their group who had gone after the boar, but it looked like they had lost it. They kept searching for a while, with no luck, although Kendra did get a bird. She was pretty proud to be the first one to get something. They were trying to figure out who was best at earth skills so they could try to track the boar when they heard a loud horn. They looked around, confused, until they saw a bright yellow fog coming towards them through the trees. They all took one look and began sprinting in the opposite direction. Bellamy led them down a hill, shouting that there were caves somewhere close by.

The group got split up as Kendra stayed with Charlotte, making sure the girl was keeping up with them all. Bellamy grabbed Charlotte's arm at one point, and Kendra followed close behind them, she heard a thud behind her, but she couldn't afford to stop to see what the noise was. Bellamy stopped suddenly, ushering Charlotte into the opening of a cave. He motioned for Kendra to follow, and she did, but they both stopped as a voice called out for Bellamy. He turned, trying to go back, but Kendra grabbed his arm, "Bellamy, no. It's too late."

He turned back, looking conflicted, but he began to cough, and with that, entered the cave. It was as they reached the back of the cave that Kendra realized she would be alone with Bellamy and a girl she had just met in this tiny cave for who knows how long. She sighed, realizing this would be a long night.
