"Are you sure this safe?" Ginny asked Harry apprehensively as they approached the outdoor race course, rental helmets in hand.
"Of course it's safe." Harry assured his girlfriend, guiding her over to where a number of small go-karts were parked off to the side of a painted checkered line on the ground.
This was something Harry had wanted to do since he was eight and his cousin Dudley had bragged to him for days on end about going to his friend Piers' birthday party at a local go-kart track. It sounded so much fun being in a small, motorized car that went fast around a track. And the fact they were only kids and were able to come close to real driving was so cool!
So when Ginny had asked him if there was anything he could think of that he had always wanted to do but never got the chance to do, going go-karting popped immediately into his mind. When he told her his idea, he could tell she was unsure of his very muggle idea. It took a little convincing, but she eventually agreed it did sound interesting.
Harry had found a games and entertainment centre in Devonshire not too far away from Ottery St. Catchpole. Ron and Hermione were spending the weekend with her parents for some family event her parents were dragging her to, so he didn't have to worry about inviting the two along. Harry was more than delighted to have a weekend all to himself with Ginny.
A track attendant spotted them approaching and greeted the couple before asking them to select their karts. After helping each of them secure their seat belt harness, the attendant explained where the gas pedal was and how to break.
It took both of them a couple minutes to figure out the workings of the go-karts, but soon they were zipping around the track. Harry was ahead of Ginny for a few laps before she got close enough to his kart to force him over, taking the lead from him. He was able to get back into the lead another lap and a half later, only to lose it again. They both kept taking the lead with each other, their competitive sides egging them on to go fast and try and beat the other. The entire time Harry couldn't help himself from laughing and whooping in joy from the fun of it all.
After about forty-five minutes, the track attendant waved a checkered flag as they made the final turn to the start/finish line. Ginny edged Harry at the finish, taking the checkered flag. They both came to a screeching halt, and Harry could hear Ginny's melodious laugh as she pulled her helmet off. He couldn't help but smile at his girlfriend's delight in beating him.
"So, how was it?" Harry asked.
"Alright, I admit it, this was fun." Ginny said, still laughing from the fun of it all.
"I knew you'd love it!" Harry exclaimed. "It might be a bit low to the ground unlike a broom, but I know you're a speed demon at heart."
"A speed demon isn't the only thing you know I can be." Ginny implied, the blazing look he loved so much gaining heat in her brown eyes by the second.
Harry felt it hard to swallow all of a sudden at her implication and felt himself stirring. He wondered if he could convince her to skip their planned lunch at a local restaurant and head back to Grimmauld Place with the promise of a late dinner out afterwards.
With the way she was walking over to him after getting out of her go-kart, her hips purposely swinging back and forth knowing full well he was watching her in rapt attention, Harry had a feeling Ginny would be most in agreement with his new idea for their afternoon.
