"She warned us not to underestimate her. You really thought you could just walk up there and take her out? Hah… no wonder she sent me back here to help your dumb ass."
"Tsk.. it'd be easier if I could just kill them like you."
"Watch and learn. I'll show you how to send a message."
"Fuck you."
"Hah… it's good to see you too, brother."
The lavish designer stores faded into the distance as the black Bentley drove away. Elsa let out a disappointed sigh. The attacker somehow got away, after the perfect setup and execution he somehow just… escaped? In the mere minutes between her leaving to rejoin Anna and Kristoff showing up? Did she fuck up somehow? Did she miss hitting the nerve? Not hit hard enough? Did he just fake passing out? No… Elsa recalled the scene as clear as day, she incapacitated enough enemies of all sizes to know the exact amount of pressure to do the job. Even a man as big as him would be out cold for at least 5-10 minutes…. Fuck it, no use dwelling on that now… there'll be a time for that. Right now the priority for the agent was maintaining her cover. She felt the watchful eyes of the driver glance up into the rearview mirror. Especially with that asshole analyzing your every move.
Elsa cleared her throat, interrupting the silence in the car and turned to smile at the lovely girl beside her. "Soooo… who's Hans?"
"I – uh…" Anna flustered at the mention of her fiancé, "he's um… he runs this big shipping company. He and my dad have been working together for the past couple months. They don't really talk about it though. I mean, I probably wouldn't understand even if they did… hah," Anna nervously twirled one of her pigtails. Oh Anna….
Elsa gave her a comforting, reassuring smile. As much as she wanted to interject and force the girl to acknowledge she's more than she gives herself credit for, sometimes silence was the best response to encourage someone to keep talking.
"…but I mean, he's great!" Anna gave a half-hearted laugh, "he um… he's nice to me. He takes me out to do cool things – well right now he's away on a business trip so I'm not doing any cool things… not saying this isn't cool! This was amazing and I loved it, I was just saying that it wasn't with Hans – not that it needs to be! I… ugh, stop it Anna. But um, anyways… we went on a spontaneous weekend trip to Monaco a few weeks ago. That's actually where he proposed to me! We had a beautiful candlelit dinner on the terrace of the penthouse suite, it was very romantic," Anna smiled at the memory. Must be nice to be a fucking billionaire.
"That sounds… amazing," the blonde commented with a smile. "I can see why you said yes," she playfully teased.
Anna rolled her eyes and giggled at the jab. "That's not the only reason I said yes…. He pays attention to me and tries to do what's best for me in his own way… oh! He pushes me to become a better person! Yeah, sometimes I'm too clumsy or too rambling-y or too over excited or too childish. Hans still loves me despite all that and has tried to help me be better! Yup yup, mmhmm," the redhead nodded to herself.
Elsa couldn't help but frown to herself upon hearing the last statement, as she looked down at her nails. "Well, I like those parts of you…" she commented absentmindedly. The agent looked back up, catching Oaken's eyes in the rearview mirror before they quickly glanced back to the road. What the fuck are you doing? Elsa didn't know whether that question was aimed at the nosy bodyguard or herself. She cleared her throat and looked back to smile at the girl beside her.
"Well, um…" Anna laughed, unsure what to make of the comment, deciding not to dwell on it too much, "Well he means well, I guess." She began fidgeting with her braid again. "Some people don't approve of how quickly it all happened… technically we only officially dated for a day before he proposed… haha…."
"A day?" Elsa feigned surprise at the redhead's confession.
"I mean, we spent lots of time together before that! Hans was always coming by to meet my father in the evenings and we'd always hang out and talk for a little during dinner or a late-night snack before he left, so it's not like I blindly said yes to marry a stranger I just met…" Anna sighed, "but when it's true love, it's just right, right?" The redhead nodded to herself, answering her own question. Oh Anna… are you trying to convince me or yourself?
Elsa smiled, "Well as long as you're happy, Anna." The younger girl finally looked over and smiled back, appreciating the lack of any further scrutiny.
"Anywaysssss, that's enough about me! What about you?" Anna inquired, changing the subject, "Anyone special in your life? Hmmm?" The younger girl comically wiggled her eyebrows earning a light giggle from the blonde.
"Do you think I'd be living with two smelly men if I had?" Anna giggled at the question as the blonde continued, "Oh no, I'm still waiting for my billionaire to start hanging around at my house so we can bond over some hot cocoa or something," Elsa smirked at the playful glare she received. "Any tips on how I can meet her faster? Did you use a website or something to schedule yours or…?" Anna smacked her arm in lighthearted retaliation.
"Ow, okay okay, I guess that's a no," Elsa giggled. Her smile soon faded as she continued. "I mean… honestly I guess I just haven't had time for that sort of thing. I travel a lot for work, heck I moved all the way here just to be a little closer to everything. I barely have any friends as it is, no point trying to find a relationship… hah…."
"Honestly I don't have many friends either," Anna confessed, grabbing the somber woman's hand and smiling. "But hey! At least now we have each other!"
"You're right," Elsa returned a grateful smile, turning to a smirk "I guess I already found my billionaire." Anna smiled and rolled her eyes at the comment, earning another giggle from the blonde. "I'm just playing, Anna." Elsa let out a content sigh as she patted Anna's hand in comfort, looking away to gaze out the window. Just playing….
The apartment door quietly closed. Only the sound of typing filled the room as the agent took off her new coat and hung it on the hook beside the door. She let out a disappointed sigh as she walked over to the dining table where Kai had set up his workstation for the day. The day's field work was over – Anna now headed back to her estate – she should be safe there. Time to figure out what the fuck happened.
"Welcome back, Agent Frost," the man greeted, not looking up from his screen.
"Where are we at Kai? Is Kristoff still at the scene?"
"Yup still here blondie!" the man chimed in from the speaker of Kai's phone on the table. "Quite the mystery we have here, don't we?"
Elsa just rolled her eyes and ignored the man's comment. "Kai, did you have an angle on the alley?"
"No…" a flurry of typing and a new grainy camera view was pulled up on the tv, "but I could see the initial altercation near the dessert shop. Nothing of note after that…" The recording was from a security camera across the street, off in the distance at the top left of the screen showed the muscular man approaching the blonde, fast forwarding through the fight, the two running out of view, the bodyguard entering the shop, the blonde entering shortly after, a few random people walking in both directions, the trio exiting the shop, then Kristoff's Tesla driving into view. Damn it, nothing.
"Hmm… what about left of the alley?"
"Didn't find anything there either…" a new camera view filled the screen, this one on the same side of the street facing down to watch the sidewalk and entrance of the shop adjacent to the alleyway. The trio walked in and out of view, followed by the attacker shortly after, random people entering and exiting the shop, the same people from the other camera walking into view as they walked further down the street, then the camera paused. "That's the time Kristoff arrived on scene." Fuck, nothing here either.
Elsa stared at the paused screen deep in thought, nibbling on her bottom lip as she played the scene back in her head. Nothing from both sides of the entrance. Did an employee just wander back there and discover the body? Possible but fairly unlikely… even if someone found the body, they'd call emergency services, not move it – the average person probably couldn't even move the massive body if they wanted. He was knocked out cold, wasn't he? Fuck, I already went over this, he was definitely unconscious. Even if he somehow woke up that quickly, he didn't go back the way he came….
"Kai, pull up a map of that location." The agent stepped closer to examine the map that now filled the screen, quickly finding the entrance to the alley. There actually was no exit at the other end of the alley, it led to a dead end. No escape that way. However…. After the first two loading bays, there was a small footpath on the left leading around the back of the building and turning left into the adjacent alley – heading back to the street a block down from the entrance. "Have you checked this alley here?"
"Yeah, we didn't see anyone coming out of there…" Kai pulled up another camera across the street, this one attached to a streetlight a store or two down from the alley but still providing a wide enough angle to cover the exit. The camera played the recording – Elsa and Anna walking arm in arm, Oaken following close behind, the muscular man following shortly after, fast forward, the group of tourists outside the store, a few people going in and out of adjacent stores –
"Wait, stop, stop, stop." Kai paused the feed slightly confused. "Go back a little… stop. Regular speed." Elsa crossed her arms, staring at the screen intently. "Right… there, pause." The top left of the view caught a glimpse of the same muscular man walking into the shop entrance. What the fuck? "Zoom in on that man in the doorway."
A few seconds passed as Kai zoomed in on the video, though the picture was a bit grainy and slightly pixelated, the man was unmistakable. Kai frowned in confusion, "That's… the same guy…" Impossible.
"Slow it down, Kai… stop." The man took a quick look over his right shoulder back at the street as he stepped into the store. The low-quality face looked exactly like the attacker, but there was one crucial difference. "There's no scar…." So there was another. Fucking shit…. The agent chastised herself for assuming the attacker was alone.
Why the fuck did he attack on his own though, that makes no sense…. Actually, why did he try to attack me at all? Nothing makes sense. An uneasy feeling began to grow in the pit of Elsa's stomach. Fuck, this isn't good…. A lone attacker recovering from that beating would think twice before attacking again. But if he had a partner who was unharmed… that man may want to strike back… quickly.
"Kristoff–"
"What's up! I was starting to think y'all forgot about me," the man joked through the phone.
"Shut up, idiot, I need you back at the safehouse asap. I have a bad feeling about this."
"Roger, dodger, Icy Hot."
"Kai, run both these guys through our facial recognition databases. I know it's a longshot with the shitty quality, but we might get lucky."
"Roger, doing it as we speak."
A small blip suddenly popped up in the lower right corner of the screen, indicating a high priority classified message was just received. The agent's eyes narrowed in suspicion, sensing the contents of the message were important to the current situation. As if hearing her thoughts, Kai clicked on the notification, opening the message contents for them to read.
A few seconds of silence as the two scanned the text, finally a small gasp escaped the man behind the computer screen. What the fuck is this mission becoming?
"How the fuck are we only getting this now?" Elsa asked furiously. A world wide network of spies and informants and advanced military grade surveillance tools at the agency's disposal, but somehow they're receiving mission critical information more than 12 hours later?
"Kai," the pudgy man finally looked up from his computer. "Show me the arms room."
The black Bentley slowed to a stop at the entrance to the Walker estate. The 10 ft tall black iron gates towered above them. After a few seconds the gate slowly opened towards them, allowing the car passage up the driveway. The smooth brick path stretched out over two football fields leading like a red carpet up to the large roundabout encircling the marble fountain at the foot of the mansion. The driveway was lined with small, perfectly trimmed hedges, outlining the path that cut straight through the deep green lawn. The sides of the estate were walled with tall hedges and cedar trees, concealing the iron fence that lined the property when viewed from within. The estate boasted an assortment of plants and palm trees scattered throughout the front of the mansion. Paths of stepping stones snaked out from the sides of the building twisting through the tranquil greenery alongside the driveway.
The vehicle entered the roundabout and stopped right in front of the mansion. Anna exited the car, stepping out onto the curb, greeted by grand columns standing proudly on opposite sides before her, both imposing and inviting. Anna sighed as she made her way inward to the large front entrance, turning to look out behind her. The free rolling hills outside the iron gates, the Paris skyline glimmering in the distance, all now just out of reach, trapped behind the columns that invited her in. Anna turned back, twisting the large handle to open the door to the mansion.
"Welcome home, Anna dear," Gerda happily greeted as Anna entered, "I'm sorry your day was cut short, I know you were looking forward to it."
Anna returned an appreciative smile, the woman always seemed to know how she was feeling and somehow could always lift her spirits with the simplest of greetings. "Thanks Gerda, it was amazing," Anna grew livelier as she recalled the events earlier that day, "Elsa LOVED the coat, thank you so much for that idea! She looked SO GOOD in it, actually she looks so good in EVERYTHING! I'm not exaggerating at all, Oaken can confirm it!"
The bodyguard finally appeared in the doorway carrying the multitude of bags from the day's purchases.
"Oh! Dang it, I totally forgot about all of those! Oakennn, you should've reminded me, I would've helped you!"
Oaken chuckled as he finally relinquished the luggage, "It's no problem at all Ms. Walker, happy I could help."
Anna rolled her eyes at him, "I would like to help sometimes too y'knowwww, tell him Gerda!"
"Stop babying the woman," Gerda jokingly scolded the bodyguard, "Maybe if she carries it herself she'll learn not to buy so much!"
"Heyyy that's not what I meant!" Anna playfully glared at the woman. "Oh! I bought a leather jacket today too!"
"Ooo a leather jacket? That sounds absolutely riveting, I bet you look fabulous."
Anna giggled, a light shade of pink dusting her cheeks. "Elsa thought so too," she quietly commented, picking up a few bags.
"Well deary, I'm glad you had fun." Gerda said, pulling the girl in for a big hug. "Now then, put those down, Oaken can take them up to your room. Your father is in his study waiting for you."
Anna laughed again as she put down the bags, "Thanks Oaken! Talk to you later Gerda! Oh! Oaken did promise me you'd make my favorite dessert!" The redhead ran off to meet with her father.
"Oh did he now?" Gerda laughed, raising an eyebrow at the defenseless bodyguard.
Oaken grabbed the bags, looked back at Gerda with a smirk and shrugged, "Well Gerda, seems like we both have work to do."
Gerda looked back, ensuring the younger girl was out of earshot. She turned back to the bodyguard, face growing serious, "Get ready Oaken, I have a bad feeling about this." Oaken nodded, walking off to drop off the bags.
The door quietly opened as Anna peeped her head into the room. "Dad?"
"Anna, honey… come in."
The girl frowned at the solemn welcome and hesitantly entered. Although her father was always busy with one thing or another, he usually always brightened up whenever she visited him. But today….
The man was sitting almost in the dark. The dim glow from the small lamp on the metal desk and the dampened late afternoon sun creeping along the edges of the drawn curtains were the only light to illuminate the large room.
Anna reached for the light switch beside the doorway in concern. "Dad? Is everything oka – " The chandelier above lit up, revealing the dejected older man, disheveled brown hair, unmade tie hanging loosely around the collar of his untucked, wrinkled dress shirt, his gray blazer discarded and abandoned on the hardwood floor beside him. His appearance was shockingly different from the usual cleanly groomed, professional business attire her dad normally wore. "Dad, what's wrong?"
The man got up from his leather chair and walked over to the small couch beside the unlit fireplace. Anna instinctively followed, sitting beside her father with concern.
"Anna, honey, I have some bad news…" the man looked into the eyes of his concerned daughter. Gently he took her hand in his, his caring green eyes glimmered in the light. "Honey… Hans… is dead."
The girl blinked in confusion as the words sank in. "I… what? No. What? No, dad. That's ridiculous." Anna shook her head and let out a halfhearted laugh at the absurdity.
A silent tear from the man fell onto the girl's hand. "Anna… he died last night."
"Dad, this isn't funny. He's not dead, he called me last night."
"Honey –"
"No, no, there's no way. H-he was just gone for a few days."
"Anna… he was in a car accident…"
"No," Anna shook her head again, "no, there must be some mistake. Maybe it was someone else that just looked like him. How do you know it was actually him?"
"Anna, honey… it was him… I saw… pictures."
"Pictures? What pictures? Show me."
"Anna please don't do thi –"
"Show. Me."
Her father sighed, knowing the inevitable pain but understanding it's what must be done for Anna to accept the truth. He walked back to his desk to pick up the single folder and returned to sit with his daughter.
"Anna, there are pictures from the accident in here. It's… a lot to handle…."
"I need to see it for myself, dad." The man reluctantly handed over the documents, eyes watering knowing the suffering it would cause his only child.
Anna took a deep shaky breath and opened. The first file was a picture of the wreck. The dark gray convertible Ferrari… Hans' car… was completely smashed, the windshield bent into the car, windows shattered, side mirrors hanging by a wire, deep gashes and dents along the sides of the car – all evidence of a violent high-speed crash and rollover. The driver's door was knocked loose, hanging by its hinge. There was only a single body in the car, but the photo angle didn't quite show the victim.
Anna nervously turned to the next page with a sharp gasp. The photo was a close up of the driver's side. Blood… too much blood… padded the back of the victim's head, clumping with the red hair. Long streaks of deep red ran down the sides of the face limply buried in the expanded airbag. All signs pointed to Hans… but without seeing the man's face, this could all still be a mistake.
A shaky hand suddenly flew up to cover her mouth in shock. The man's arm hung lifelessly at his side, the glint of the camera flash bouncing off his wrist, catching Anna's eye. That watch. The beautiful silver stainless steel Rolex, the deep teal watch face matching the blue of her eyes… it was the watch she bought as a gift for her new fiancé the day after he proposed. The engagement gift to celebrate the unforgettable moment now held on helpless and broken, blood-stained silver, bent and shattered blue, reflecting the light that seared this horrific image into her reality.
A single tear silently fell onto the photo.
The man looked on helplessly as his daughter's world crumbled around her. "H-he was only gone for a few days…." Another tear fell. The man tried to take her hand again but she pulled away, "No… he's busy, dad…." Another tear rolled down the girl's cheek. "He's, he's just busy, he just called me." Her father slowly but firmly pulled the girl into a tight hug.
"No," Anna tried to pull away but she couldn't escape the man's embrace, "NO," she desperately pushed and pulled against his strong arms. "NO," another tear rolled down her face, "NO," the girl hit his arms in a feeble attempt to escape, "NO he's just busy, dad," the man wouldn't let go, "NO HE'S JUST…" she twisted and turned, trying to break the man's grip, "DAD NO, HE'S… HE'S… HE'S… He's… he's…." Finally her arms fell helplessly to her side as the defenseless girl succumbed to the weight of the world, sinking into her father's shoulder, sobbing as tears flooded her vision.
Father and daughter sat embraced for what seemed like hours, only the echo of the clock on the wall and Anna's uncontrollable sobbing filled the air. The man, his own cheek damp with tears for his suffering daughter, rubbed the heartbroken girl's back, soothing her until she slowly regained control of her breathing and the sobbing subsided. After a few deep breaths, Anna finally pulled back, her father gently releasing her from his embrace.
"C-can… can Elsa come over?" Anna begged between sniffles, "I-I… I really need a friend right now..."
The man sighed, under normal circumstances guests were almost never allowed past the gates. Ever since his wife's accident, he did everything in his power to keep Anna as safe as possible. He made the mistake of meeting Hans at their estate enabling him to become a part of her life and now look at where they were. He needed to protect her from everything… from everyone.
And yet… Anna looked up at him broken and defeated, her eyes puffy and red emotionless from pure exhaustion. His eyes began to water again, the sight of his daughter in this state was absolutely heartbreaking. Maybe just this once it'd be okay…. From what Oaken and Gerda told him, this new friend seemed to have a positive effect on Anna – that was basically the only reason he agreed to let Anna meet her again in person earlier today and so far that went smoothly. Just this once.
"Of course honey, of course."
A crisp breeze in the cool winter afternoon air rolled over the back of the hill where the white Tesla was parked under a tree just off to the side of the road. The road was pretty deserted, the last house on the street was over 100 yards behind. Out here were just small open rolling hills of grass, sprinkled with the occasional bushes and small trees. A minute or so passed, only the soft whispers of the wind washing over the grass and the crinkle of dried leaves stumbling across the pavement filled the silence, not another soul in sight.
Seems deserted enough.
Elsa stepped out of the car and popped open the trunk. Before opening the large black case, the agent took another look around for any witnesses - none were found. She unlatched the two heavy duty clasps and opened the container, revealing the AR-15 within. The agent pulled the rifle out of the case, wrapped the strap around her shoulder and closed the trunk, then quickly darted farther off the road, wandering up the back of the hill. She ducked around a small bush, unhooking the weapon strap and crawling into a prone position as she neared the top of the hill. Elsa inched forward toward the base of a small tree as the Walker estate came into view, its protective iron gates over half a kilometer away. She brought the weapon up and peered down the variable scope, twisting the knob on the side to adjust to the max 4x magnification to begin her surveillance.
The original plan was to wait at the safehouse until Anna reestablished contact (or Elsa initiated their communication after a day or so). As much as the blonde would have wanted to keep Anna company in person to ensure her safety, asking to reconnect so soon risked raising suspicion and threatening the agent's cover. Besides, the probability that the lone attacker would return so soon was extremely low and even Oaken could surely protect the girl from one man. However upon discovering the mysterious assailant had a partner, Elsa immediately decided to conduct manual surveillance so she could be nearby just in case the attacker's partner tried to strike back. Right after that, the team was notified that Hans, Anna's fiancé, had been murdered the night before. There had been a clear attempt to take out both Hans and Anna for reasons still unknown, making a follow up attack now extremely likely. But there was also the possibility that the enemy had followed Oaken and discovered the location of their safehouse when Elsa was dropped off earlier, introducing another risk that they'd first attack the safehouse to eliminate Elsa before attacking Anna again. The blonde had recalled Kristoff from the field so he could protect Kai and the safehouse, allowing her to keep an eye on Anna. In the meantime, Kai was tasked with combing through the various camera footage around the incident with Elsa to determine exactly how the two men escaped and confirm whether the safehouse location was indeed compromised or not.
"Bzzzz, bzzzz… Bzzzz, bzzzz…." Elsa's phone in her front pocket vibrated aggressively, pressed between her thigh and the ground below. The agent rolled slightly to the side to free the phone from her pocket and glanced down at the caller id. Anna? Elsa quickly shifted her focus back to look down the scope to analyze the situation at the mansion, calmly swiping the screen to answer and holding it up to her ear.
"Anna?"
"E-Elsa?"
The agent immediately noticed the anguish in the girl's tone, quickly scanning the grounds of the estate and any uncovered windows to find a clue to the girl's sorrow.
"Anna? What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"Elsa, I-I just…" Anna struggled to speak between her sniffles, each stutter shooting a nail directly into Elsa's heart, the sound of the girl suffering was utterly heartbreaking, "I just found out… Hans… Hans d-died… Hans… died…." A muffled sob followed.
Fuck… so Anna just found out as well…. Elsa took a deep breath, steadying her emotions. As much as she wanted to immediately track down and kill the motherfucker that caused Anna such extreme suffering, if she played this right, the agent would have a viable reason to meet up with Anna again and be there to keep her safe. Stay focused, asshole. Now... how to do this….
"Oh… Anna… Anna, that's awful. I'm so sorry…."
Elsa heard another muffled sob through the line. Come on, don't fuck this up.
"Anna? Anna," the agent decided on assertiveness, "Anna where are you? I'm coming over."
"O-okay…" the girl meekly replied.
"Anna, I know things are hard… I can't imagine the pain you're going through… I want to help as much as I can, okay? Can you please send me your address? I'm not at home right now but I have a car, so I'm coming straight over, okay?"
"O-okay…"
Elsa felt her phone buzz, most likely with Anna's text of her address. A small gray sedan suddenly rolled into view as it passed the estate's closed gates. Elsa's eyes narrowed, following the car, her finger ready to flip the weapon's safety switch and open fire at the slightest misstep. The vehicle silently continued down the road, oblivious to the semi-automatic rifle trained on it, turning the bend and disappearing as the road continued on behind the nearest hill. Elsa waited a few seconds, but finally relaxed, taking her finger off the safety.
"Okay, looks like I'm close," Elsa said after quickly confirming Anna's text, "I'll be there in about 5 minutes, okay?"
Anna sniffled, "Okay…."
"Is it okay if I hang up?"
Another sniffle, "Yeah…."
"Okay, see you soon, Anna."
"T-thank you…."
As she hung up, Elsa's heart ached. Even with everything Anna was going through, losing one of the most important people in her life, this precious, kindhearted, innocent soul still had the compassion to thank her.
The agent closed her eyes and took a deep breath to regain her senses, opening with renewed focus as she stared down the scope once more. Every bone in her body was screaming to immediately sprint back to the car and speed towards the gate, but years of training and experience taught her that rushing blindly into a situation never leads to a happy ending.
Only five minutes.
Anna wiped away another tear that rolled down her cheek as she gazed out the living room window. She tightened the grip on her phone as she hugged her knees for protection, curling up into a small ball of tears on the large family size couch. She heard the caring, hesitant footsteps of the servant enter the room.
"Anna dear, come away from the window, I'll make you a nice warm cup of cocoa."
The fragile girl simply shook her head, sinking her face into her arms and knees with a sniffle. Gerda let out an empathetic sigh and walked over to join the heartbroken girl on the couch. The cushion deepened as the woman sat beside her. Gerda slid in closer to redhead and wrapped her arm around the sniffling girl, pulling Anna in to rest her head on her inner shoulder. The caring woman nuzzled the top of the girl's head with her cheek as the two sat in supportive silence.
After a few minutes, Gerda's pocket buzzed, forcing the two to break their embrace as the woman pulled out her phone.
"Oaken said Elsa's here, honey," the servant said standing up. Anna's eyes immediately flew back out the window to see the sleek snow-white car driving up towards her like a white knight returning to her castle.
She really came… Anna's eyes began to tear up again, thankful for the amazing woman that somehow fell into her life just days earlier.
"Stay here hun, I'll let Elsa in," Gerda said as she walked towards the front door, though Anna was too focused on her approaching savior to hear her.
The car slowed to a stop as it turned into the roundabout. A moment later the door opened and the elegant blonde stepped out, her long wavy hair swaying in the afternoon breeze. The woman ran a hand through her hair and straightened the invisible creases on her clothes.
Before Anna knew it, she was running. Out of the living room. Passing Gerda in the hallway. Ignoring Oaken stepping out of the nearby security room. Reaching for the door and twisting it open. She heard the concerned woman behind call out to her and her calm footsteps quicken but it didn't matter. Elsa was here. The cool winter air greeted her as the door opened. Anna didn't have a sweater on but it didn't matter. Elsa was here. Gerda called out again, but it didn't matter. Anna ran out the doorway, her vision blurred from the tears building up, the lump in her throat choking any words she wanted to say. Through the haze she could just make out the small supportive smile as the blonde looked up at her, opening her loving arms to welcome her. She could hear Gerda running after her out the door, but it didn't matter.
Elsa is here.
Anna opened her arms as well as she neared the woman, stepping fearlessly off the curb to land in Elsa's arms. A small whisper whisked over her shoulder.
A loud boom echoed off the nearby hills.
And a dull thud behind as Gerda fell to the ground.
