Ch. 11: There's Always More

"Boss, I promise that I'll find the journal."

"Your men have been unsuccessful, Orlando. It is quite disappointing."

"The journal has to be somewhere. We have the files, everything you requested."

"Yet, the detectives are still on your trail. The wraith didn't kill them or mark them. Your men have left a trail behind, and I told you that I wanted no trace."

"It's not that easy, sir."

"I don't care. I want that journal and if you cannot find it, find its author."

"She's human," Dani said softly as she leaned back, taking in the scene before her. She let out a sigh and looked at Korsak and Jane. "That's why he was hard to track down because he was in a relationship with a human."

Jane looked at Alicia and asked softly, "Is that true? You're human?"

Alicia nodded. She rubbed her jaw and rested her head against the sofa, feeling the tears in her eyes once again forming, "I didn't expect to be a widow before even getting married," she said solemnly.

"Wait," Alicia lifted her head to look at Korsak, "you were engaged?"

"Yes. We were planning to elope." Alicia noticed Dani looking away with small shake of her head and snapped back to Dani, "Of course, you're going to judge me, right?"

Dani wasn't caught off guard by this cold harsh tone. She straightened her spine and retorted calmly, "I'm not judging."

"It's part of your job to stop us."

"No, my job is to arrest those who break the law within the human and supernatural world."

"You have to uphold the Contract."

"It's the rules of the supernatural world and I was very much there." Jane gave a surprised look as Dani continued, "The Contract was made as a way to prevent circumstances out of our control."

Alicia scoffed, "You're stopping love."

"It was preventing a power struggle, creating those of isolation, and pain. So much pain."

"Based on who," Korsak questioned.

Dani's eyes darted toward Korsak, and look expressed the easiest statement that he was not helping the situation. "Based on the fact that it supposedly happened many, many years ago and the consequences was the death of mother and child," Dani explained.

She still remembered the conversation Van Helsing gave prior to the Contract creation. No one would know truly why it was created, at least, that was Van Helsing's plan. The person who lost their human wife and hybrid child remained secret and only Van Helsing would ever know the name. He took it to the grave, but the Contract was made for that besides keeping the supernatural world safe.

Dani sighed and asked, attempting to change subject, "When was the last time you saw Owen?"

"He came in frantic a couple days prior, and he kept repeating that what he was doing was getting out of control," Alicia explained quietly. "He just kept repeating that and he stormed out. I…never saw him like that before."

"Anything else out of the ordinary," Jane followed up.

"Nothing really." Jane and Dani locked eyes which Alicia caught immediately. "What? What happened to my Owen?"

Dani clenched her jaw. "Do you know what an Untamed is," Dani inquired softly. Alicia shook her head and there was a bated breath released, "It's when a Lycan has a taste of blood. Usually, human. Their medallion cannot even stop the transformations, and this is known to you humans as werewolves."

"No," Alicia shook her head, "He wouldn't do that."

"I know that his human instinct would but it's the monster within. Something happened after he left and-"

"We need to know if you knew a professor," Jane cut off. She pulled out her phone and took out the picture of Professor Jamie Peters.

Alicia took Jane's phone. "Jamie," Alicia said softly, "how is she involved in this?"

"How do you know her?"

"We went to her to find a way to possible reverse Owen's transformation."

"You were trying to stop the lycanthropy," Dani asked in awe, never hearing such a possibility.

Alicia nodded but shrugged, "She said it wasn't even possible based on how Owen explained his condition. It was not like the movies or books, so it was hard to find a way to help him. He said that we could never truly be together if he still had his condition; didn't want to burden me with the possibility of our children having it."

"But that's how you know Professor Peters," Korsak emphasized.

"That's it. How is she involved in Owen's death?"

No one answered initially, unsure of how to answer the next statement. They were still not sure why Owen was meeting with Jamie Peters and even collecting evidence from Peters home, there was still a connection missing: it's the why?

"How is she involved," Alicia questioned again.

Jane looked at Korsak and Dani who gave uncertain looks until she looked back and confessed, "Professor Peters' body was found with Owen's, Alicia."

"What?"

"We don't know why they were meeting but they were found in a park."

Suddenly, Alicia stood up from her seat and approached the front door. "I believe you should leave," she said to the detectives, prompting them each to stand up from their seats.

"We didn't mean to hurt or offend you," Jane informed Alicia who was looking down with tears in her. However, it didn't matter, Alicia didn't look at them or acknowledge the statement, making the detectives leave and slamming the door behind them.

Leaving the detectives on the porch, Jane bowed her head, "She's in pain."

"She's allowed to feel the way she does," Korsak stated. He then looked at Dani and asked, "You really had to say all those things?"

"Which things? The fact that their love is forbidden in my society. That the reason of the Contract had more layers than you expected."

"A warning would have been helpful," Korsak argued.

"It's something I don't talk about because I promised Van Helsing," Dani retorted, walking toward her motorcycle.

"To keep a secret for so long," Jane questioned. She placed her hands in her blazer pocket, "Secrets are not good."

Dani snorted, "Then this case is going to be a Hellhole for you. If you haven't noticed, Detective Rizzoli, this world you've entered is run on secrets."

When the three returned to the warehouse, they were met with the sight of the destroyed bullpen with Adam picking up papers with Frankie and Frost. Chairs were somewhat ransacked, and desk were somewhat disheveled, but the murder board took the worst of the damage. Her eyes were then met with the sight of Regina running a light blue glowing hand over the area. "What the hell happened," Korsak questioned at the sight.

"We don't know," Frost retorted, standing up from the ground and patting his pants. "We arrived and we found this mess."

"Anything missing," Jane asked immediately, moving further into the room.

"Not that we can find so far," Frankie retorted. "Adam thought it was a good idea to have Dani's friend to use a…" He gave a confused expression and looked over his shoulder toward Regina, "What did you call it again, Regina?"

Regina's hand stopped glowing. "It's a tracing spell," she answered with her eyes toward Dani. She watched as the detective walked through the mess toward her desk. Jane followed, looking at Dani's paperwork spread out once more.

"It seems they were looking at your desk the most," Jane pointed out.

"Did the spell find anything," Dani asked Regina without looking up.

Regina bit her lip and retorted, "No."

"Does the tracing spell work usually," Frost asked, trying to comprehend.

"Regina's one of the best witches I know especially being Mama Lorna's apprentice," Dani informed softly, prompting a smile to appear on Regina's face. "If she can't find anything with a tracing spell that means that whoever broke in here had magical properties or knew how to hide their scent."

"I'm sorry, Danielle," Regina spoke.

Dani shook her head, "Nothing to apologize, Gina."

"Is it me or everything is coming up to a dead end," Jane groused.

"How so," Frankie prompted.

Jane walked to the center the bullpen. "Well, we still got no suspects, our lead for Owen happened to be his fiancé," Jane explained. "They were planning to be married against the Contract's wishes."

"What are violating in the supposed Contract," Frost gestured with his fingers.

"I guess humans and supernatural are not supposed to be together."

"They were going to violate the Contract," Regina questioned Dani.

Dani nodded, "And that's why the Professor was involved. She was brought in to see if there was a way to reverse the lycanthropy."

"It's impossible to do that."

"The professor and Owen thought that there was a possibility," Jane retorted. "If they thought of it, is it really impossible?"

"Found something," Adam announced, prompting Dani to look away from her desk. In Adam's hand was a piece paper and inside the piece of paper, it seemed to be covered in neat writing.

Jane took the note from Adam and read it aloud, "Why would Professor Van Helsing keep a file of a dead man?" The detective looked at Adam, "This note is either referencing to the Jekyll-Hyde file or Frankenstein's journal."

"I gave Van Helsing my creator's journal after Dani and him freed me from my jail cell. I…I didn't want to keep it because it reminded me too much of painful memories."

"So, the note is referencing to the Jekyll-Hyde file." She walked over to Dani's desk to see that Jekyll-Hyde file was still on the desk but seemed to have more writing. "Dani, this doesn't look like your writing," Jane pointed to the writing on the file.

Dani glanced down at the file and her blood went cold. She ran her fingers along the folder, taking in the handwriting. You should really be careful with your shit, Dani, the voice whispered.

"What does it mean to be good and bad? It is truly good and evil but, that's not what you're wondering. You're wondering what you're missing and well, I don't know. Have fun with the clean-up," Jane read aloud.

"Cocky," Frost commented.

"Complete bastard."

"Whomever did that wanted to be a wise ass," Korsak added. "Could be a possible lead."

Dani shook her head slightly, trying to register the words, "Not really because you have to have access to the warehouse."

"That's only very few people," Jane questioned.

Dani's eyes darted to Jane, "The docs, Adam, Bartu, and me. The Council members come and go when they wish."

"They had to get pass Bartu, and that gargoyle doesn't miss much."

"If he did," Frankie prompted, "you got cameras?"

"We do and Bartu has access to them," Adam informed. He walked up to Frost, "I think that if you and I head over, Detective Frost, we can maybe find our suspect."

Frost smiled, "Alright and, Adam, you can just call me Barry."

Adam nodded and he walked out of the room with Frost trailing behind. "Hey, wait for me," Frankie shouted, chasing after them, leaving Korsak, Regina, Dani, and Jane.

Jane's phone then vibrated with a message from Maura. "Maura and Nina found something," she announced to the others.

"You and Korsak…um…head down and…I'll escort Regina out," Dani answered absentmindedly.

Jane noticed this but didn't bother to ask, walking over to the elevator and watching the two leave the bullpen. As the doors closed, Korsak looked at Jane and said, "This job is already hard enough but having supernatural politics and life mixed in is showing another layer."

"You're telling me."

"Janie, I have a feeling that Dani is not telling us everything."

Jane leaned back, "I have that feeling too and I don't like it." But that note did give me a lead that I'm definitely going to follow up on.

"I see that you don't listen to rules, young Danielle."

A door slams.

"Who are you and what have you done to my brother?"

A quick grab in the dark.

"Oh, my apologies, Dani, am I not enough for you?"

A couple steps forward and a quick flip of the table.

"You don't get to call me Dani if I don't know you stranger and I would step back right now."

The scalpel comes out.

"You plan to stab me with that scalpel? Such a small blade compared to mine."

A longer blade was drawn.

"Did you receive the invitation from Dracula," Regina inquired, prompting Dani to snap out of her thought.

"About the masquerade?" Regina nodded and Dani shrugged, "Yeah, I received it but I'm doing this investigation. I can't just go to the masquerade."

"Wouldn't it be insightful to be able to walk among them then you'll be able to find some suspects," Regina pointed out. Though, I do have ulterior motives for mentioning that it can help the investigation.

Dani crossed her arms, "Go to the masquerade to help my investigation? Lord, help me."

"Also, to make sure that Dracula doesn't take your head off."

"Nothing new."

Regina sighed and leaned against the wall, "Dani, why do you try to make Dracula upset?"

"I try not to. It's more we've always rubbed against each other wrong, which I was surprised to see Dracula invite me," Dani retorted.

Regina hummed with in agreement then retorted with a hint of jealousy, "You sure that wasn't Mina who did?"

Dani shrugged then looked at Regina. She took in the deep breath then released it, "Gina, thank you for coming over and helping out with this and with the spell a couple nights ago."

"You're welcome, Dani."

"Well…I should get going."

"Dani, wait." The detective turned back toward the witch, who nervously wrung her wrists until she stepped forward and asked softly, "Would you be my date to the masquerade?"

"Um," Dani stuttered, "you're asking me?"

Regina blushed, "If you don't want to, I can understand-"

"No…I mean, yes…I mean, fuck…." Dani flubbed before she closed her mouth, trying to gather herself. Regina watched as the detective collected herself with a small tinge of pink on her cheeks. Dani pushed back a loose strand of hair behind her ear then answered calmly, "I haven't had a…a date for the masquerade before. It's been a while since I danced…."

"If it's a no…"

"If you don't mind me possibly embarrassing you."

Suddenly, a large smile formed on Regina's face that took Dani's breath away. "You wouldn't embarrass me," Regina assured. "In fact, I look forward to it."

"Well, alright. I'll see you then."

"Right," Dani hummed, watching her leave.

Ah yes, our one vice: beautiful women.

"Leave her out of this."

Too late, I met her already and she doesn't seem to like me.

"With good reason," Dani hissed under breath.

She then rubbed her forehead and turned on her heel, walking back toward the warehouse. As she continued into the room, she could hear the voice speak once more.

You know that this is not the end.

"Maura," Jane called out as Korsak and her approached the autopsy table covered in piles of books and paperwork. With Maura was Susie, Nina, and Doctor Crawley, all with latex gloves on as they rummage through the papers. "Is this all of the Professor Peters' research that we collected from her home?"

"Every single piece and its very detailed, disorganized, and interesting in one giant junk heap," Maura explained.

"Trash heap, Maur but, that means that you got a lot to go through," Jane assumed.

The blonde nodded. "So far, her research did touch upon lycanthropy and the process of it," she explained.

"For a mortal, it's an interesting analysis," Doctor Crawley added. The floating gloves gestured toward a book at the table, "She found a book that seemed to be written about the supernatural world."

"Okay, many people wrote about your world. What's different about this book," Korsak asked.

"It's too exact about everything."

Jane raised eyebrow. "Too exact? Like it's accurate?"

"Yes, and I'm not sure how she would be able to receive this kind of literature. This type of book would have been confiscated," Crawley explained. "At least, Doctor Van Helsing would have gotten rid of this because it compromises the safety of our world." He opened the book, turning to specific page and pointed to it, "This explains about how we were established. How Van Helsing designed the Contract as if they were there."

"It's handwritten?"

"Very much so."

"Jane," Maura called. The detective walked over and stood next to her girlfriend to show a small note in one of the books. "This was in one of her books," the doctor showed to Jane.

Jane grabbed a crime scene glove and placed it on. She then took the note and read it aloud each item written, "Lycanthropy- unable to explain. Origin of curse is not traceable. Spoken with local, not willing to speak without a tradeoff. What do you give to a man who was with Helen of Troy? Look up further research on HY3-E and its creator who seems to not be in Boston." Jane looked up at Maura, "It's a find but who wants the tradeoff?"

"Someone who was with Helen of Troy," Nina pointed out. "Ancient Greeks?"

"Actually, there's one who been with Helen of Troy who wasn't from Greece. He's German," Doctor Crawley informed.

"Who?"

"Faust." Jane glanced up to see the reddish-brown hair detective entered the room and took a seat on one of the morgue stools. "That's the only German that I know who got with Helen of Troy. I thought he was out of town," Dani stated to the others.

"Well…."

"Crawley…"

"I might had heard at the Golden Mask that he came back."

Dani rolled her eyes. "What's the new gig," she questioned.

"Don't know."

"Wait," the doctor and detective looked at Jane who seemed confused. "Who the hell is Faust?"

"Doctor Faustus," Maura informed. "Supposedly, he died after being save by-"

"God's Grace or was dragged down to Hell," Dani added. She then rolled her eyes, "I love how there's the whole redemption concept especially someone as slimy as him."

Crawley crossed her arms over her chest. "What about Mephis?"

"Mephistopheles only comes when he wants to stir some trouble. He likes to mess with Faust and if Faust is back in town then Mephis has already taken him for a spin.

"You think he would be at the masquerade," Crawley inquired.

"Masquerade," Jane asked. "What are you talking about?"

Dani smacked her forehead. "I totally forgot to tell you that Dracula decided to proceed with the masquerade, and you have all been asked to attend."

"Asked to attend?"

"Means you need to come as per Dracula's request. Usually, I would say fuck it but, if we find Faust at the masquerade. We can get insight about this trade off that was supposed to happen."

"I don't know what to wear," Jane argued.

"I'll send Doctor Isles an idea of what you should be wearing."

Maura pressed her lips together, "You don't think that we're pressing for time."

Dani stood up from her chair. "Go for the nineteenth century I would be suggested but if not, it's a masquerade. Be creative and even go to an earlier period. Just avoid the seventeen hundred."

"Is there a reason?"

"Wigs, overdone make up and fake beauty marks. Thank god, I wasn't alive during that time." She then stopped in mid walk and turned back, "Make sure you wear your medallions."

"Uh huh," Jane mumbled. I'm fucked.

Masquerades were a huge deal for the supernatural world. It was a way to go back to the old ways of how some of them lived, it reflected on how they enjoyed the extravagance. Maura did have connections, but she had to pull a couple strings to get the appropriate outfits for eight individuals. She found dresses, jewelry, and masks for the team and was able to get these items delivered to everyone.

Jane sat on Maura's bed, waiting for Maura to bring the attire she had to wear. While relaxing, Jane pulled out her cell phone to look up what nineteenth century dresses would look like. It was a bit much especially since there was some frill. "Jane," the detective looked up to see Maura in her bath robe. The blonde touched her girlfriend's shoulder, snapping out of her reverie and felt the tension that seemed to be there lessen a bit, but it didn't stop Maura from asking, "What's wrong?"

"I'm not going to fit in at this shindig," Jane confessed, her voice laced in defeat. Maura took a seat next to Jane, placed her hand on Jane's cheek, and kissed her lips gently. Jane returned the kiss immediately but felt Maura's lips pull away; the feeling of closeness gone. "Not that I didn't like it but what was that for," Jane inquired.

"A small distraction," Maura answered, making Jane smirk then the doctor added, "and a reminder that you will fit in."

"It sounds fancy, and I don't know if I would look decent in a dress."

Maura raised an eyebrow. "What makes you think you're wearing a dress?"

"I just-"

"Assumed. Now Jane, you should know better by now that I wouldn't make you wear anything that you weren't comfortable with," Maura informed. She then gestured toward the coat protector, "That's for you and I think you'll like it."

Jane gave a small smile, "Thanks, Maur."

"Of course."

Before Maura could return to the bathroom, Jane grabbed her by the hand, pulling her back into her embrace. She then kissed Maura ardently, Maura's hand began to wander down Jane's robe covered arms while Jane's hand slipped passed Maura's robe. The contact of skin for the first time caused a small moan to escape Maura's lips, releasing their kiss. Jane hummed at the feel of Maura's smooth skin and her eyes darted at the small sight of Maura's breasts. It was a peek, but it was enough for Jane to trail kisses along Maura's collarbone.

"Mm…Jane…" Maura groaned, trying to get her composure.

"Maura…"

"As much as I love this," she stepped back from her detective, closed her robe. Jane whined, making Maura giggle and kiss her cheek, "We have to get ready."

Jane huffed and gave a smirk, "Go before I do anything else."

With that statement, Maura slipped back into the bathroom while Jane groaned, collapsing back onto the bed.

"This shit feels tight," Frankie complained as he attempted to adjust the collar around his neck. Nina rolled her eyes but turned to help her fiancé with his black ascot then smoothing the wrinkles on his silver shit jacket. "You look beautiful," Frankie complimented Nina's beautiful matching dress with her white gloves.

"At least, you don't look like a jester," Korsak retorted, crossing his arms over his chest with the bell hat on his jingling. He then heard a chuckle, prompting Korsak to look at Frost who was in his red suit with top hat, "You're part of the circus too, Ringling."

"I look good, court fool," Frost remarked.

Korsak chuckled, "The colors are nice. Who knew purple and gold would look good on me?"

"Wonder where our masks our," Kent inquired, wearing his kilt with a dark green suit jacket with Susie matching in a similar and dress jacket.

"You mean they're not here yet," the group turned around to see Jane and Maura walking toward them. Frost let out a whistle while there were several claps from the others. "Stop," Jane told them in embarrassment.

"Janie, you look great," Frankie complimented, gesturing toward the dark blue officer uniform.

Though she would not admit it to her brother, she can agree that she did look good in the old-fashioned uniform. Gold tassels trailed across her chest, line for line with a gold pinstripe along her pants, and even Maura mentioned that a cape came with it but decided to opt it out because it didn't seem to suit Jane in her mind.

However, Jane would have liked the cape so she could have been Batman. Maura scolded her, of course, reminding her that these were classic period pieces and that they were meant to be worn with care. But with care, there was also the issue of wear to place her gun and it led to her wearing her back up on her ankle.

Despite that issue, Jane returned her focus to the vision that was Maura Isles. When Maura stepped downstairs to meet Jane, the detective felt the air in her leave. The blonde could have worn a trash bag, as Jane always said, and she would look beautiful. But this beautiful dark blue dress rested on along Maura's shoulders, it fitted her body well with no corset and it was accentuated with the white gloves like Nina's.

To Jane, she was the true beauty of the night.

Jane waved them off then gestured toward Maura's gown, "I look fine. Maura looks gorgeous." Maura blushed, kissing Jane's cheek gently which gave Jane a small smile before collecting herself. "Where's Adam and Danielle?"

"Don't know," Frost shrugged.

"Isn't this the right spot?"

"It is," Jane looked over to see Dani walking up to the group, dressed in officer's uniform like Jane's but in pure black with a satchel in her hand. "Adam's inside," Dani informed as she opened the bag to reveal the masquerade masks. As she handed each person a mask, Dani continued, "He had to go in a different entrance due to his…condition."

"Where's the entrance then," Korsak inquired.

Dani stepped into the alleyway with everyone following. They approached a brick wall then with a quick tap of one brick three times, a door appeared suddenly. Dani opened the door with the echoes of orchestra music, prompting Jane, Maura, and the others to enter the room first.

The grand staircase greeted them, and the music was much louder with the voice of an opera singer starting an aria.

Maura and Jane stood still, taking in the sight; one with pure awe and the other with fear. However, despite how extravagant it was, Dani took her mask and placed it on her face. Seeing this, Jane did the same with Maura then took in a deep breath in and placed her arm out for Maura.

The blonde took the arm and gave a reassuring squeeze.

The investigation and meeting of other supernatural beings was only the surface area of the world Dani lived.

This was a whole different level.
