A/N: Thank you to Ann, it wasn't what we intended but I hope it turned out alright. Warning to those who care, Will Dey is not treated kindly but then again, he is kind of an asshole in this story.

Panic set in as soon as Kara opened her eyes. She sat up quickly and looked down to see Lena sleeping peacefully beside her. She carefully got out of bed and quietly gathered her clothes that were strewn about the apartment. She got dressed as fast as she could and gave Lena one last glance before sneaking out the front door.

Kara arrived at CatCo, 20 minutes late and found Will perched on the corner of her desk waiting for her.

"I had a coffee for you but it got cold." He told her as she approached. She gave him a half smile before sitting in her chair and shuffling through the stack of papers on her desk.

"Sorry." She said without looking up at him, "I…I had some things to do this morning."

"Are you okay? You look…"

She looked up at him, "I look what?"

Before he could answer and really put his foot in his mouth, Andrea came out of her office to hand out assignments. She turned her attention to Kara, "Danvers, Dey pack a bag, you'll be working on an assignment that's going to require you both. Join me in my office for the details."

Will turned to Kara and smiled once Andrea went back into her office, "This is going to be great."

"Mmmm." Kara nodded still not fully sure what the hell was going on.

In Andrea's office, she explained to them that this assignment was a little personal for her. She received a call from the daughter of a friend who was frantic about one of her friends missing. She explained that she noticed that he wasn't the only one that had gone missing and the local police didn't seem concerned and didn't do much to investigate.

"So if the police won't help, that leaves it up to the two of you to find out what's going on. I normally wouldn't do this but her mom was always there for me and I want to help." Andrea explained to them.

Will and Kara got a few more details from Andrea before leaving her office.

Will went back to his desk, a smile on his face as he looked forward to going on assignment with Kara. Kara on the other hand was thinking about what happened last night and what she was going to do about it.

As if on cue, she received a text from Lena, 'Hey, sorry I missed you this morning.'

Kara read the text and then flipped her phone over; as if that was going to make it all disappear.

She knew she had to text back but wasn't sure what she should say. She picked up her phone and just stared at it for the longest time before finally texting 'Sorry had to get to CatCo, new assignment.' She sent it then put her phone in a drawer at her desk.

She got lost in her work, did her best to finish up an article though her focus was scattered between her new assignment, Will, who kept coming over to her desk periodically to make suggestions about the new assignment (did he not have work of his own?), and the fact that she slept with her best friend then ran out on her.

After finishing up her latest article she went to talk to Andrea about the new assignment she and Will were given.

"I'm sorry, what seems to be the problem?" Andrea asked.

"I'm just not sure why Will and I were both put on this story." Kara said to her, "He's a pretty capable reporter and can handle this story by himself."

Andrea sat back in her chair and stared at her for a good long minute, "You're both on this story because I want you both on it." She stood up and went to pour herself a drink from her bar. "I know what the two of you are capable individually as reporters but I need both of your combined talents."

She turned to offered Kara a drink but she shook her head no.

"Honestly I didn't think you would have a problem with Will." Andrea said, "Didn't you two have a thing?"

"No, not at all." Kara said almost offended.

"Hmm, that's not the way he tells it." She said with a head tilt.

Kara gave her a questioning look.

"Anyway," She took a sip of her drink, "You're on a deadline so I suggest the two of you get to work."

Kara left Andrea's office wondering what Will had told her that would make her think they were ever together. She shook her head; she couldn't think about one more complicated relationship right now.

Back at her desk she gathered a few of her things and then grabbed her phone from the drawer which had 3 new texts from Lena.

Want to grab lunch?

Is everything okay?

Call me later

Kara sighed.

"I'll pick you up at your place in an hour."

Kara looked up from her phone to see a very eager and smiling Will standing by her desk.

"What?"

"I said I'll pick you up in an hour at your place so we can hit the road. It's about a 2 hour drive so I'd like to get going before it gets too late." He told her.

"Yeah sure that's fine then." Kara said then headed for the elevators. He followed her of course and they rode in silence before going their separate ways.

When Kara got home she packed a few things and then sat on the corner of her bed with her phone in her hand. She contemplated calling Lena but she really didn't know what to say. She felt bad for just leaving the way she did but she didn't know what else to do.

She opted for another text, 'Swamped at work and now going out of town for a story. Call when I can.' She hit send then turned off her phone.

Will arrived on time to Kara's and tossed her bag in the trunk before they got in and headed out of town.

"Aside from it being a friend's daughter asking for help, I wonder why Andrea even cares about this." Will said as they passed the 'Leaving National City' sign, "It's definitely going to be huge since she had to send out her two best reporters to investigate." He smiled smugly to himself.

"Kids don't go missing every day." He said, "Okay I mean they do but why wouldn't the police care enough to investigate?"

Kara didn't say anything as she was too busy staring out the window and watching the scenery blur passed them.

Will noticed she wasn't paying attention, "I heard the story is really about Bigfoot." He glanced over at her, "Maybe we'll get to interview him. That would be fun right Kara?"

"Yeah sure sounds good." Kara said absentmindedly as she continued to stare out the window and clutch her cellphone with both hands as they sat in her lap.

Will scoffed; obviously Kara was in her own little world so instead of trying to continue talking to her he just turned the radio on and drove the rest of the way in silence.

Once at the hotel they checked in then Will suggested they have dinner in his room while they work out the details for the story and how they would be investigating it. When Will came back with the Chinese food he found Kara working at the table on her laptop.

He put the bags of food on the table, forcing her to close and move her laptop. "I got a little bit of everything. I know how hungry I get working on a new story so I thought maybe you'd be the same way."

He started unpacking the bags as Kara moved her things from the table to the dresser to clear some space for them to eat. He sat down in a chair across from her, "Dig in." He said as he split his chopsticks and grabbed a carton of moo shu pork.

"Did you hear anything I said in the car earlier?" He asked as she bit into an eggroll.

"No." She admitted then peaked into a couple of the take-out cartons to find the broccoli beef.

"I was wondering how more than one kid could go missing from a town and no one really puts an effort into investigating it." He said to her then wiped his mouth with a napkin.

"Well that's why we're here isn't it, to investigate and find out what's really going on?" Kara asked as she inhaled another egg roll.

Kara's phone dinged and she picked it up.

"Do you think local law enforcement dropped the ball?" He asked.

"Shit." She mumbled under her breath.

"Kara?"

She got up from the table still staring at her phone, her thumbs hovering over her keyboard not knowing how to respond.

"Kara, what's wrong?" He asked as he got up and went to her.

She turned to him, "I did something I probably shouldn't have."

"What are you talking about?"

"I can't do this right now." She said to him then grabbed her things, "We'll meet up in the morning." Before he could argue, she was out the door and down the hall.

In her room she looked at the text from Lena again

'Tell me we didn't make a mistake.'

Kara sat down on her bed trying to figure out what to say. Finally she simply texted back, 'We'll talk when I get back, I promise.' She waited to see if Lena would respond and when she didn't, Kara put her phone on her night stand then left her hotel room.

She's never been to Copper Canyon before, to be honest she'd never even heard of it and from what little she saw of it, there wasn't much to it. What was the big mystery here? Why were kids going missing and why didn't anyone but one teenager seem to care?

She tried focusing on the story, tried to figure out what angle to approach it but her mind kept going back to Lena. Maybe she should call Alex? No, she wasn't a kid anymore, she needed to stop running to Alex with all her problems and start figuring things out for herself.

She walked around for a little bit longer before going back to her hotel room. She took a shower then got into bed but didn't fall asleep.

In the morning there was a knock at her door and she wasn't the least surprised to find Will standing there with a disposable coffee cup in each hand.

"Morning." He said to her then held out a cup for her.

"Thanks." She said then took the cup from him.

"I thought maybe we could go over to the police station and talk to the sheriff." He said to her.

She was thankful that he didn't bother asking about last night or if she was alright.

"Sure." She said then locked up and followed him to the car.

Maybe it would be good to occupy her mind with work. A good story and some investigating could certainly keep her mind off of Lena and whatever mistakes she thought she made, right?

At the police station they went to the front desk and Will smiled at the female deputy. He glanced down at her name tag, "Hello Deputy Monroe, I was wondering if we could speak with Sheriff Castillo."

"Who are you and what is this regarding?" the deputy asked.

"Will Dey and this is my colleague, Kara Danvers and we are journalists for CatCo."

"Sheriff isn't in today, sorry." She told him.

Will cleared his throat, leaned on the counter a little and smiled again, "Maybe you can help me then."

Monroe looked over at Kara as if to ask, 'Does this shit really work?' then she looked at him, "What can I help you with, sir?"

Will explained that they were investigating the teen that seemingly disappeared and asked about the family who reported them missing. They didn't want to give away that they were asked to come just in case the girl didn't want that information known. The deputy gave them the name and address of the family but told them if there were any more questions they would need to speak to the sheriff directly.

"Well she was kind of rude." Will said as they walked back to the car.

Kara said nothing as they got in the car and Will drove them to the Kemp residence.

Will knocked on the door and a child; maybe 5 opened the door, screeched at them then slammed the door shut in their faces. Kara chuckled but this seemed to bother Will, who knocked harder on the door.

This time a girl, in her mid-teens opened the door, "Yes?"

Before Will could say anything there was a loud crash in a room somewhere in the house and two younger children could be seen running up the stairs. The teen at the door turned and shouted, "Marcia, go see what the twins just destroyed!"

She turned her attention back to Will and Kara, "Can I help you?"

They explained to the girl, whose name was Lynsey who they were and why they were there. She didn't invite them in but told them about how she became friends with a homeless teen named Trevor who would usually stand outside the grocery store playing guitar to earn some money. She told them some of Trevor's backstory, about how his parents kicked him out because he had a drug problem and how he travelled far from his home state just to get away from their control. She mentioned that maybe two other kids had gone missing and tried to report it to the sheriff. When they asked her what happened she said that when she had first reported Trevor missing, the sheriff brushed it off and just assumed that he moved on and did nothing to investigate. Lynsey knew that Trevor wouldn't leave without saying goodbye because he'd promised he wouldn't.

"He could have been lying to you, he was a drug addict." Will said to her.

Lynsey shook her head, "You're no different than the sheriff, I don't know why Andrea bothered sending you." She went to shut the door on them but Kara stopped her.

"I promise you, I'm not." She said then handed the girl one of her cards, "Call me if you have more to say about Trevor."

After they left the Kemp home they went to the grocery store where Trevor usually was and talked to the store manager and a few of the employees who didn't have much to add to what Lynsey had told them. The manager did mention that she had to call the sheriff a couple times to get Trevor to leave. Kara and Will eventually ended up going back to the hotel with not much information.

They went to Will's room and while he went to get them take out Kara tried to focus on going over her notes. She ended up going through her text messages with Lena instead, starting as far back as a year ago and finally to the most recent ones. She sighed heavily as Will came through the door with a pizza and a plastic bag.

He put the pizza on the table and started to unload paper plates, napkins and two cans of sodas from the bag. He sat down and flipped the top of the pizza box open, "Ladies first." He said to her as he handed her a plate.

She took the plate from him but just put it on the table, "I'm actually not hungry right now."

"You said you were starving before I went out." He said, "I even got extra cheese like you asked."

"I know I'm sorry." She said as she pushed the pizza box away from her, "I just lost my appetite."

He slid the can of lemon-lime soda to her, "Maybe this will help."

She took the can but didn't open it.

Will took out a slice of pizza, taking a big bite of it, "Is it because of the story?"

"Huh?"

"Okay so it's not the story." Will wiped his mouth with one of the paper napkins, "You've been distracted for the last two days. Staring off into the distance or looking at your phone as if you're expecting a call or text. Last night you got a text from someone and you bolted from here like your pants were on fire."

He opened his can of soda and slurped a sip from it, "If you don't want to talk about it, I get that but I thought maybe I could help." He shrugged his shoulders and grabbed another piece of pizza.

"I did something and I'm not sure how I feel about it." Kara told him.

He wanted to wait patiently for her to continue but he could see she was losing her nerve, "Kara, it can't be that bad. What happened?"

Kara was hesitant to tell him but she finally said, "I slept with someone and I'm not sure I should have."
